Poyet handed Sunderland position

Gus Poyet was handed the task of dragging Sunderland out of relegation trouble after being named as Paolo Di Canio’s successor.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Arsenal - FA Cup Fourth Round

The 45-year-old Uruguayan has signed a two-year deal and will take charge with immediate effect, the club has confirmed.
The former Brighton manager’s initial challenge will be to secure a first Barclays Premier League win of the season with the Black Cats currently lying at the foot of the table with just one point from their first seven games, a return which leaves them six adrift of safety.
Poyet’s arrival at the Stadium of Light, where he becomes the sixth permanent manager in less than five years – his official title, like that of predecessor Di Canio, will be head coach – was confirmed on Tuesday morning.
Owner Ellis Short, who took more than a fortnight to find the right man, said: “We analysed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus’ track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward.”
“We welcome him to Sunderland.”
The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder, who will be joined by staff Mauricio Taricco and Charlie Oatway, has been out of the game since parting company with the Seagulls during the summer on less that friendly terms.
His track record as a manager is limited to his experience with the South Coast club and Sunderland have given him his first chance to work in the English top flight, although he had earlier been part of the coaching set-ups at Swindon, Leeds and Tottenham.
However, his record at Brighton was impressive, having guided them to the League One title at the end of the 2010-11 season and into the Sky Bet Championship play-offs at the end of the last campaign before his untimely departure.
Poyet will be required to work within the system installed by Short after Di Canio’s arrival with the Texan businessman determined to continue despite the failings of the Italian’s brief and often chaotic reign.
That will mean working under director of football Roberto De Fanti in an attempt to provide the club with long-term future success.
De Fanti and chief scout Valentino Angeloni recruited no fewer than 14 signings during the summer transfer window, several of them ostensibly for the development squad.
However, Di Canio, who was at the helm for only 13 games and 175 days, was still in the process of moulding his new-look squad into a unit when he was relieved of his duties after his relationship with some of his players hit rock-bottom.
Poyet will now take up the baton with the Black Cats at least having shown promising signs of gelling under interim head coach Kevin Ball in recent weeks.
A 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over League One Peterborough got the 48-year’s temporary spell in charge off to a positive start, and their performances in defeat by Liverpool and particularly Manchester United since have suggested a corner is close to being turned.
Poyet will have the international break during which to work with those players not representing their countries before sending a team out for the first time at Swansea a week on Saturday.
Intriguingly, his second game, as was Di Canio’s, will be a derby clash with Newcastle, and a repeat on Wearside of the 3-0 win the Black Cats secured at St James’ Park in April would provide the perfect launch-pad for his tenure.

Despite having tried their best, Macau couldn’t prevent themselves from a losing. In the 6th minute, Chi Sheng Fa opened for Taipei ( China). 10 Minutes later, Chi Sheng Fa doubled score to 2-0 for Taipei.

In the second half, Macau play pressing, however Macau was impossible to change opportunities into real goals. Moreover, Macau had to receive the third goal against from Chen Chia-Ho. In the end of game, Macau’s effort was rewarded a shorten goal to 1-3.

The confrontation between China and Korea wasn’t as exciting as expected. With the advantages of two wins, China play slowly, in the opposite , after two games Korea gain only 1 win, this cause them hurry in finding an equalizing. However China players were the openers of the game in 5th minute by Li Xin.

3 Minutes later, Hu Jie received a skillful pass from captain Liang Shuang to raise the score to 2-0. In the remained time of game, China players apply strong defending tactics which prevent them successfully from receiving any goal against. In contrast, Korea show that they are too young to play in this Futsal tournament.

Juventus 3-2 AC Milan: Bianconeri bounce back to beat 10-man Rossoneri

Sulley Muntari struck at the start and at the end of the game in Turin, but goals from Andrea Pirlo, Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini proved sufficient for the Bianconeri.

Juventus continued to put pressure on second-placed Napoli after a superb second-half performance helped them to a 3-2 win over AC Milan.

The visitors made the perfect start when Sulley Muntari’s opener with just 20 seconds on the clock stunned the home crowd, but Andrea Pirlo levelled matters 14 minutes later before Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini turned things around after the break.

Milan were always facing an uphill struggle when Philippe Mexes was sent off with 15 minutes to play, and a late Muntari second proved scant consolation.

Simone Padoin, Claudio Marchisio and Fabio Quagliarella all came into the Juventus starting line-up as boss Antonio Conte made changes after their disappointing draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri made two alterations from his side’s 1-1 draw against Ajax, with Antonio Nocerino named in midfield and Alessandro Matri coming in to face his former club, for the suspended Mario Balotelli.

Juventus’ hangover from European action continued as they fell asleep inside the first minute to go behind after just 20 seconds as Nocerino’s wayward shot found Muntari at the far post and the midfielder side-footed the ball past the helpless Gianluigi Buffon.

Quagliarella had a glorious chance to level as Juve sought a response, but he lent back at the pivotal moment, before Kwadwo Asamoah stung Christian Abbiati’s palms as the goalkeeper turned the ball over for a corner.

The equaliser was not long in coming, however, as Pirlo pulled the home side level in the 15th minute with a free kick that found the bottom corner after Nigel de Jong had brought down Carlos Tevez.

The experienced midfielder curled the ball expertly over the wall, although Abbiati could have done better as he palmed the ball into the net.

The frantic pace eventually subsided, although Juventus had strong penalty claims turned down when Tevez was brought down inside the box just before the break – the Argentine striker’s appeals waved away after Kevin Constant’s apparent push.

Tempers flared early in the second half when Mexes punched Chiellini, although amazingly the referee failed to spot the incident and the Milan defender escaped punishment.

With both sides cancelling each other out, Conte threw on Giovinco to replace Quagliarella soon after – and within a few minutes the forward had repaid that faith.

The Italy international picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box after 69 minutes following more Juventus pressure, before finding room to smash his shot into the bottom corner.

The game swung further in Juve’s favour when Mexes was sent off for a second yellow card – failing to escape for a second time after a foul on Giovinco on the edge of the box.

And when Chiellini added a third from the resulting free-kick, reacting first after Pirlo’s brilliant effort had cannoned back off the crossbar, the victory was secured.

There was still time for Muntari to add a second for Milan when his deflected effort surprised Buffon at the near post, but Juve held on in a nervous last minute.

Norwich 1-3 Chelsea: Willian screamer seals victory

Late goals from Eden Hazard and the Brazilian secured three points for Jose Mourinho’s side after Anthony Pilkington had cancelled out Oscar’s early opener.

Late strikes from Eden Hazard and Willian fired Chelsea to a 3-1 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho’s side, who have now secured their first away win in the Premier League this season, looked to be heading for a draw after Anthony Pilkington had cancelled out Oscar’s fourth-minute opener.

But Hazard’s goal, which was aided by poor handling from John Ruddy in the 85th minute, was added to 60 seconds later by Willian, whose first-time curled effort from the edge of the area wrapped up the three points for Chelsea.

With Fernando Torres suspended, Demba Ba was handed only his second start of the season and the 28-year-old had an early penalty claim turned down after colliding with Sebastien Bassong inside Norwich’s area.

Ba continued to threaten the hosts’ defence and he was able to assist his side’s opening goal as he controlled a long ball before laying off to Oscar, who drilled his effort low past Ruddy.

Ba almost instantly doubled that lead, forcing an excellent save from Ruddy with a side-footed shot from a tight angle. Norwich carved out a presentable chance of their own in reply, with Petr Cech keeping out Jonny Howson’s attempt from close range.

Norwich also had promising chance before the end of the first half, but Howson could not engineer a shooting opportunity after Ricky van Wolfswinkel headed the ball on into a dangerous area.

Chelsea had been largely comfortable since taking their early lead, but they were given a scare just a few moments after the restart following an incident that set the tone for the second period.

Ramires’ challenge on the breaking Pilkington had the home fans appealing for a penalty but, yet again, referee Neil Swarbrick waved away the protests.

Van Wolfswinkel then went close to getting himself on the scoresheet but he could only chest a bouncing ball wide with Cech out of position. However, Norwich did get the goal their endeavour deserved after 68 minutes.

Martin Olsson’s cross from the left found the head of Van Wolfswinkel, and Pilkington succeeded where his Dutch team-mate had previously failed by getting ahead of David Luiz and guiding the ball into the back of the net.

Both managers made attacking substitutions in a bid to claim the win late on, but it was two of Chelsea’s new additions who provided the decisive contribution.

When Alexander Tettey’s failed attempted clearance from Oscar’s pass fell into Hazard’s path, the Belgian still had plenty to do – and his shot looked destined for the safety of Ruddy’s arms. However, the Norwich goalkeeper allowed the ball to squirm under his body and trickle into the net.

Willian then scored his first Premier League goal since his move to Chelseaa minute later as his first-time effort from the edge of the area curled over Ruddy who could not get close to the strike.

The win fires Chelsea to third in the table, two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Norwich remain on seven points, two above the relegation zone.

West Brom 1-1 Arsenal: Wilshere ends drought to take Gunners back top

Claudio Jacob had headed the Baggies into the lead just before the break but the England international scored his first league goal for three years to earn the Gunners a point.

325637hp2

Arsenal came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against West Brom courtesty of Jack Wilshere’s first Premier League goal in three years.

Claudio Yacob headed the home side in front shortly before half-time, only for the England international to equalise in the 63rd minute to earn his side a point.

The result brought an end to Arsenal’s run of eight consecutive away league victories but it was still enough to see Arsene Wenger’s men leapfrog Liverpool to go back to the summit on goals scored.

West Brom boss Steve Clarke was forced into two changes from the team that started last week’s victory at Manchester United, with Saido Berahino and Nicolas Anelka replacing the injured duo of Victor Anichebe and Scott Sinclair.

Wenger also made two alterations from the midweek Champions League victory over Napoli, Carl Jenkinson coming in for the injured Bacary Sagna at right-back while Wilshere was preferred to Tomas Rosicky in midfield.

After a quiet start, the hosts were denied an opener in the 15th minute as Wojciech Szczesny dived to his right to keep out Berahino’s effort.

The visitors responded strongly, Mesut Ozil picking out Kieran Gibbs on the left-hand side of the area, but the full-back blazed his effort over.

Clear sights of goal were proving rare with Myhill not tested properly until the 40th minute, getting down to his right to deny Aaron Ramsey.

But despite the visitors being on top, Yacob put West Brom in front three minutes before half-time, heading home Morgan Amalfitano’s glorious right-wing cross from six yards.

It should have been 2-0 a minute into the second half, Anelka getting his feet in a muddle after being picked out six yards from goal following superb work down the left from Berahino.

And in a frantic opening to the half, Arsenal responded immediately, with Wilshere firing high and wide after being played in by Olivier Giroud.

Anelka wasted another golden opportunity to double the lead in the 52nd minute after springing the offside trap from Liam Ridgewell’s pass, but with just Szczesny to beat the ex-Arsenal man placed his effort wide of the right-hand post.

West Brom were punished for their wastefulness in the 63rd minute as Arsenal equalised with a goal of real quality.

Giroud fed substitute Rosicky, whose lay-off was met first time by Wilshere 20 yards out, and his sweet strike took a slight deflection of Jonas Olsson’s shin, with the ball deviating just enough to beat Myhill low to his left.

Giroud then volleyed wide when well placed in the 72nd minute before Billy Jones stung the palms of Szczesny with a rasping drive a minute later.

Myhill did brilliantly to deny Giroud in the 75th minute when it looked as though the Frenchman had rounded the goalkeeper and would tuck the ball home.
West Brom had late appeals for a penalty turned down when Laurent Koscielny bumped into Shane Long in the area, but the referee was not interested.
