Galatasaray can compete with Real Madrid – Terim

The Gala boss believes his side’s “world class” supporters can help the club inflict a home defeat on los Blancos for a second time in successive European campaigns.

Fatih Terim is adamant Galatasaray can upset Real Madrid in their Champions League group stage encounter on Tuesday.

Gala reached the quarter-finals of the competition last term, where los Blancos eliminated them 5-3 on aggregate over two legs.

But the Turkish giants won the second leg at home 3-2 and Terim believes his men can once again spring a suprise on Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded side.

“Real Madrid are the favorites of this group,” Terim said.

“One of the two best players in the world is [Cristiano] Ronaldo. The newcomer [Gareth] Bale, same. [Angel] Di Maria, [Karim] Benzema, [Sergio] Ramos, [Iker] Casillas… There are plenty of them.

“They are very strong. But what we say is that we want to succeed in Ali Sami Yen Arena.”

Gala will have the backing of their famous home support on Tuesday and Terim is convinced the club’s “world class” supporters can give them a crucial edge.

“We can compete against any team,” the 60-year-old told a press conference.

“The will, the heart is important. When the Galatasaray team meet with the supporters, everybody knows what my players can do.

“No one should expect a Galatasaray that will accept defeat – especially in European cups. You may not see me to speak like this in Turkey. But in Europe, this is the case.

“We respect our opponents. But we expect the same thing from them too.”

“Our supporters are world class. They will have an important mission. I ask their support for our players. We all are Galatasaray fans.”

Galatasaray – Real Madrid Preview: Los Blancos hunt La Decima

Carlo Ancelotti’s side begin their assault on another European crown with a potentially tricky trip to Turkey on Tuesday, though they will be without Xabi Alonso.

317816hp2

Real Madrid were dumped out of the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals last season but will fancy their chances of lifting the trophy for a 10th time this term.

With Carlo Ancelotti now at the helm, Los Blancos have enjoyed a fruitful summer of recruitment, with Isco, Asier Illarramendi and Gareth Bale the club’s standout signings over the summer.

Madrid will have to do without midfielder Xabi Alonso, who remains on the sidelines with a broken foot, while Ancelotti has confirmed that Iker Casillas will start his first game of the season having been displaced by Diego Lopez in La Liga.

Galatasaray ended their 12-match winless streak against Spanish opposition when they played Madrid in the quarter-finals last season, as they recorded a 3-2 home victory that ultimately proved in vain as Jose Mourinho’s men progressed 5-3 on aggregate.

With Cristiano Ronaldo on a run of 21 goals in his previous 19 Champions League matches, the Turkish side face a tough challenge in securing a repeat success.

Yet Galatasaray do boast a fine recent record in Istanbul, losing only two of their last 14 home European matches.

Roma fight back to move joint-top

Roma came from behind to move joint-top of Serie A with a 3-1 win at Parma on Monday night.

180792516

Jonathan Biabiany put the hosts in front after 39 minutes, but Alessandro Florenzi drew Roma level shortly after the restart.
Roma captain Francesco Totti put his team ahead by scoring his first goal of the season in the 70th minute, then Kevin Strootman put the game beyond Parma’s reach from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining.
The result sees Roma remain perfect in Serie A this season and go level on nine points with Napoli, who won 2-0 over Atalanta on Saturday. Parma, meanwhile, are still winless after three rounds.
Roma started strongly and threatened in the 20th minute.
Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante was forced into a full-length stretch to save Totti’s powerful strike from just outside the area.
Roma should have broken the deadlock one minute later when Miralem Pjanic found Maicon in the box but the Brazilian defender fired inches wide of the far post.
On the half-hour mark, Totti’s bullet strike was kept out by Mirante, before Biabiany came closest when his close-range effort went over the bar at the other end.
Parma continued to press forward and were rewarded before the break. Biabiany got behind Mattia Cassani’s cross and his powerful header beat Roma goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis.
Roma increased the tempo after the restart and drew level two minutes into the second half when Pjanic set up Florenzi in the box and his right-footed strike beat Mirante.
On the hour mark, Roma defender Mehdi Benatia did well to clear Marco Marchionni’s cross towards the near post with Carvalho Amauri threatening at the far post.
Just when Parma looked more dangerous, Roma took the lead.
Strootman served Totti in the area and he beat the offside trap before firing towards the near post where Mirante could not reach.
Parma’s hopes of an equaliser were dented when the referee pointed to the spot after Cassani brought down substitute Gervinho in the area.
Strootman made no mistake and struck a left-footed shot towards the centre of goal to beat Mirante and fire Roma to their third consecutive league win.

Mourinho wants expectations to be lowered

Jose Mourinho insists that nobody should expect a repeat of 2004, when he swept to the Premier League title in his debut campaign with Chelsea.

180536058

The Portuguese tactician saw his side go down to their first defeat of the season at Everton at the weekend, which means it is their worst start in the Roman Abramovich era, even though they are just two points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Mourinho has warned that things are different for him and Chelsea nearly 10 years on from when he arrived at the club from Porto.
“No, it is not 2004 all over again,” he is quoted by the Daily Mirror.
“Then we lost against Manchester City in October – our only defeat. But that is not the point. We are not unbeatable. This is a different team.
“I came here to work – I don’t say peacefully because I am the first one that does not like to work peacefully – but to work with time, to develop the players and play the best they and we can.
“We have to be effective, be adult and not naive. That is what we have to work on. We have to transform the beautiful football we played into goals.
“We are not a club who will accept in a cool way that things will come. We’re going to chase it.
“The beginning of the season was hard. Away against Manchester United, away in the Super Cup against Bayern, and away against Everton.
“But Saturday was the story of a team with 21 shots that couldn’t score a goal. That is the beauty of football.”

Rodgers, Laudrup lavish praise on Shelvey

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup delivered a half-time pep talk to Jonjo Shelvey, who went from hero to villain and back again in a 2-2 draw with former club Liverpool.

180789729

Much of the pre-match build-up had centred on Shelvey’s first appearance against the Reds since his summer move to south Wales, and he made a dream start as he fired the home side ahead after 87 seconds.
But just 99 seconds later his woeful backpass allowed Daniel Sturridge to equalise, and another misplaced pass saw Victor Moses put the Reds ahead on his debut.
Shelvey was left with his head in his hands and the visitors led 2-1 at the break, but he responded by teeing up Michu for an equaliser with a surging run and astute cushioned header.
Laudrup praised the 21-year-old’s character, but admitted he had a word with the ex-Charlton man at the interval.
“It was a difficult half for him,” he said.
“But I said ‘there is no problem, go out there, you still have 45 minutes to turn it around’.
“He knew only he could bring himself back into the game and it was a fantastic reaction to pull himself together.
“It says a lot about him, he is still very young and he will be stronger for this game.”
Shelvey apologised to the Swansea fans after the game, telling Sky Sports 1: “I just want to say sorry to the Swansea fans for two bad mistakes.
“We started tremendous, getting the goal, but then I’ve made two mistakes.
“Then I showed a bit of character, getting on the ball and setting the goal up. It’s a bit of a relief but feel I’ve given Liverpool a draw really.”
But Laudrup felt he had nothing to reproach himself for.
“He had no need to do that,” said the Dane.
“Nobody makes mistakes on purpose but it shows how he is.
“The most important thing was his reaction. It’s difficult after a first half like that. You feel you could have done better but I said there were 45 more minutes and we dominated the last 25 minutes of the game.”
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers added: “He kept going, bless him. He is a terrific boy who made a brave decision to leave a club like Liverpool and nights like this are why he left, to learn.
“He took his goal well but when you play against good players they can punish you and Sturridge is lethal and will be one of the top strikers in Europe over the next few years.
“But Jonjo will prove to be a very good player.”
Rodgers was also pleased with the character his side showed during the final quarter, as they came under severe pressure from their hosts, and went back to the top of the Premier League table.
“I thought for the first 65 minutes we were very good,” said the former Swansea manager.
“We showed incredible character to get back level so soon after they scored, and until 65 minutes we took control.
“I was disappointed with their second goal and then the momentum changed for the last 25 minutes and we had to show character and resilience.
“But we showed tonight our game is getting better and we have the character to get a lot of results.”
Rodgers also confirmed Philippe Coutinho had been forced off by a shoulder injury, with the club waiting for a scan to determine the extent of the problem, and that Daniel Agger’s absence was down to a side strain the defender picked up while trying to avoid a dumbbell falling on his foot in the gym.
Laudrup, meanwhile, is likely to be without Pablo Hernandez for this week’s meetings with Valencia and Crystal Palace due to a hamstring injury, while Wilfried Bony is nursing a rib problem.

Moyes relishing real Champions League bow

Eight years after a false start with Everton, David Moyes embarks on Champions League combat as Manchester United take on Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Training Session

Moyes has been desperate to experience the pinnacle of European club football, so much so it was assumed he would leave Goodison Park in the summer before United made their move.
Finally, 15 years after stepping into management with Preston, the Scot gets his chance.
“I am really looking forward to the Champions League,” said Moyes.
“I have been there with Everton but we didn’t quite make the group stages.
“This is something different. I’m now managing a club which is used to getting close to the final stages and I will try and do that again.”
Moyes has already revealed predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson told him a group containing Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad, in addition to Tuesday’s opponents, is one of the toughest he can imagine.
And whilst Moyes pointed out his opposite number, former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia, is also a rookie in the competition, it is an indication of the leap he has made that the man he will be most keen to stop on Tuesday, last season’s Bundesliga top scorer Stefan Kiessling, was someone he looked at but knew he could never afford whilst he remained at Everton.
“He has a great goalscoring record,” said Moyes.
“He has a smell for getting on the end of chances and is someone we will need to watch very closely. I didn’t try to sign him though. I never had that much money.”
Moyes’ opposite number Sami Hyypia returns to Old Trafford on Tuesday night hoping his experience is more like his best day against United rather than his worst.
A veteran of a decade’s service at Liverpool, Hyypia has plenty of experience on the ground which will mark his debut as a Champions League manager.
Indeed, his final start as a Liverpool player came there, when Fernando Torres inspired a remarkable 4-1 win.
Yet just as sharp in the Finn’s memory is a visit six years earlier, in 2003, which did not end quite so well.
“I was sent off after four minutes and watched the rest of the game in the dressing room,” he said.
“It was the only red card and we lost 4-0.
“You remember those kinds of things but the first one that comes to my mind is playing my last game here, when we managed to win 4-1.
“I only knew I was playing two minutes before kick-off and it was my last 90 minutes for Liverpool.”
Hyypia hopes to exploit some uncertainty in the Old Trafford camp even if, ultimately, he expects Moyes to be a success in his new job.
“It is not the first year they have started slowly,” said Hyypia.
“They are at home, they have bigger experience in the Champions League and the pressure is on them.
“We are more relaxed but we must make sure we do not not show them too much respect.
“David Moyes is an experienced manager though. Everyone should give him more time to get things running. I just hope it doesn’t happen tomorrow.”

Manchester United boss Moyes wants video evidence for diving

The former Everton manager had a quiet word with England winger Ashley Young following two controversial incidents during Saturday’s 2-0 victory against 10-man Crystal Palace.

309464_heroa

Manchester United manager David Moyes wants retrospective video evidence to clamp down on diving following Ashley Young’s yellow card for simulation during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Young received criticism following two incidents with Palace midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi, the latter of which saw the South African sent off and concede a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

And Moyes has followed predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson in taking the England international to one side to discuss diving, after similar incidents with QPR’s Shaun Derry and Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clarke last season.

“I’ve had a word with him [Young] privately and I said after the game, I’ve said for many years – I think we should have retrospective video for diving. I think that would help referees no end. It’s really difficult at times,” Moyes told reporters.

“It doesn’t change my views whether it’s at Everton or Manchester United. We can make up all the things we like about punishment but the rules are there. The referees have got the rules they have to abide by and the referee on Saturday did what he had to do – give him a yellow card.”

Moyes admits he is worried about his side’s lack of goals from open play after Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney both scored from set-pieces against Palace, following two blanks against Chelsea and Liverpool.

“It’s a little bit of a concern because we’ve played well and had a lot of attacking entries into opposition penalty areas,” he said. “If we’re winning without having to score too readily then that’s great.”

United take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday night, which will give Moyes his debut in the competition’s group stages after his Everton side were eliminated in the qualifiers for the 2005-06 edition.

“I’m really excited about it,” he added. “I was excited at joining Manchester United. Every game’s offered a new challenge, a tough one at that as well and I’m really looking forward to the Champions League.

“I’ve been there before with Everton, we played Villarreal, we didn’t quite make the group stages but this is something different. I’m now managing a club that is used to getting close to the final stages and hopefully we’ll try and do that again.”
