Mourinho’s surprise London trip

José Mourinho made a surprise trip to London this Monday. The only thing we know of the trip is that he was in attendance at Wembley to watch the Championship play-off final between Crystal Palace and Watford, the winner of which will be playing its football in the Premier League next season.

The Portuguese manager travelled with Real Madrid’s fitness coach, Rui Faria. The trip only fuels the rumours that Mourinho’s future lies with Chelsea from 2nd July, the date agreed with Florentino Pérez for his departure from the Spanish club.

The BBC’s online commentary of the game alerted to his presence in London saying: “I think I’ve just seen Jose Mourinho at Wembley. What’re you doing there José?”

Crystal Palace keen to take play-off hero Kevin Phillips into top flight

Ian Holloway wants veteran striker to help team’s tilt at Premier League after his winning goal

Ian Holloway hopes to convince Kevin Phillips to stay and play Premier League football for Crystal Palace after the 39-year-old’s nerveless extra-time penalty won the Championship play-off final for them.

Phillips, a second-half substitute, scored the only goal of the afternoon after 104 minutes and said afterwards that it might have been his last kick in professional football. But the Palace manager Holloway, who brought Phillips on loan from Blackpool in January, said he hoped the veteran striker would keep playing.

“I’ll keep signing him until he’s nearly 50 or 60 if he keeps putting the ball in the net,” said Holloway afterwards. “I do not understand why anyone is surprised about Kevin Phillips. He can keep on going as long as he wants. His game is unique; he finds space.

“If I had to put everything I own on someone smacking the ball in the net, it would have been Kevin. It is his enthusiasm that he needs to keep, that little spark, the jiggle. I’ve still got mine I hope he’s still got his.”

Phillips is now out of contract and turns 40 in July. He said afterwards he had not decided whether he would carry on playing. “If that is my last game, what a way to sign off,” Phillips said. “I’m going to have a break now. Every bit of my body is aching. I’ll see what the future brings. I want to stay in the game, whether it be playing or coaching. This club can go from strength to strength. I do not know if I will carry on.”

Holloway also praised Wilfried Zaha, who now leaves the club to join Manchester United and who won the penalty with a burst of pace which drew a foul from Marco Cassetti: “Games like that are won and lost on moments of genius and I think Wilf’s little run was almost unplayable. I’m pleased for him and delighted for Crystal Palace.”

Holloway, who won his second play-off promotion after victory in the 2010 final with Blackpool, said Palace would have a busy summer ahead. “We need to do an awful lot of work now,” he said but added: “It is not how much you spend on the group but what is inside their heart and how they want to work for you. For me they are Palace heroes.” Holloway also played down the prospect of asking the new United manager David Moyes for Zaha on loan again next year.

Palace can expect to make at least £120m in additional income thanks to the result. New television deals worth £5.5bn come into effect next season, meaning increased money for the 20 teams, and even if Palace are relegated they will receive four years of parachute payments.

Gianfranco Zola said that Watford would continue to improve, after the first season under the ownership of the Pozzo family ended in disappointment. “This is not the end of the road for us, this is just the beginning. It has been a big bonus for us to be playing this game today. It has been a great season, next season we’re going to be stronger, 100 per cent. I enjoy what I’m doing here, I am going to make sure even my contribution is going to be better next year. Now we know where we are going and have a very good platform to start from.”

Benitez takes over the reins at Napoli

Rafael Benitez has been appointed as the new coach of Napoli, club president Aurelio de Laurentiis announced on his Twitter feed on Monday night.

Napoli đặt niềm tin vào Benitez

The Spaniard, who has left Chelsea following his spell as interim manager at Stamford Bridge, will replace Walter Mazzarri at the Stadio San Paolo this summer.
De Laurentiis tweeted a picture of him shaking hands with Benitez on his verified Twitter account, and wrote: “Rafa Benitez is the new coach of Napoli. A great man with international experience. A leader.”
Benitez quickly emerged as the favourite to replace Mazzarri, who resigned from the Serie A runners-up last Sunday night and was confirmed as the new Inter Milan coach on Friday.
Benitez led Chelsea to Europa League glory and a third-placed finish in the Barclays Premier League this season after replacing Roberto Di Matteo in November.
The Spaniard won the Champions League while at Liverpool in 2005 and this month’s Europa League triumph was his second win in the competition after he won it with Valencia in 2004 before moving to Anfield.
The 53-year-old also won La Liga twice with Los Che and has won the English and Italian domestic cups with the Reds and Inter Milan.
He moved to the San Siro the summer of 2010 after Jose Mourinho had guided Inter to the Champions League and he also has some big boots to fill in Naples.
Mazzarri guided Napoli to the Coppa Italia in 2012 and their second-placed finish this term in Serie A is their best league finish since they won the Scudetto in 1990.
Benitez’s first job will be attempting to keep hold of star player Edinson Cavani who has been heavily linked with a move away from Italy this summer.
His appointment puts an end to recent speculation over Benitez’s future after he was linked with the current vacancies at Real Madrid and Stoke.
The club later confirmed the appointment via an announcement on their official website.
“Rafa Benitez is the new coach of Napoli,” read a statement on www.sscnapoli.it.
“The agreement was signed today [Monday] in London.
“SSC Napoli is happy to welcome a coach so prestigious in their own family. A welcome also to his collaborators.”

Vilanova: Neymar chose sport over money by joining Barca

The 44-year-old feels the Brazilian will improve his side’s chances of silverware in the future and paid tribute to outgoing Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho

283313hp2

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova believes that Neymar chose sporting opportunities over financial gain by joining the club ahead of Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Liga champions after Santos accepted a €28 million offer earlier this week, and the trainer was thrilled to beat off rival suitors to capture their long-term transfer target.

“We have to congratulate the technical staff for the signing of Neymar,” he told reporters after his side’s 2-0 win over Espanyol on Sunday.

“It is an important signing. We have been very attentive for some time because he could have had other, and better, proposals.

“I also have to congratulate Neymar for choosing a sporting project and not a financial one. I have confidence he will do well in Europe and he will help us to become even greater.

“Neymar is the player we were looking for. We asked two and a half years ago. The club has been very successful and has done things very well, as we did with Jordi Alba last year. He progressed very well with the rest.

“His qualities are well known. All we are interested in is that he is a high-level player.

“If they say Neymar is a ‘YouTube player’ then it’s a good thing, because he has had some great games and great goals. He has chosen Barcelona because he believes he can adapt well to our play. If he had been looking for money, there would have been nothing for Barca to do.

“It’s a dream to have an attack like this. With so many better players we will have more chances to win. Now, we have to combine them in the best way, as we have done before. If Neymar comes it is because Barca are a long-term option for him.”

Alexis Sanchez and Pedro struck the goals to seal a win against local rivals Espanyol on Sunday to keep Barca on track to reach 100 points for the season, and Vilanova insists his side will do their best to reach the milestone – even though it will not make up for the disappointment of their Champions League exit.

“We played a great game,” he continued. “It was a shame we had injuries at a key moment. The team has a good level and we could have passed the semi-finals and the final of the Champions League otherwise. That’s already happened and I congratulate Bayern, but I insist, we have reached the end of the season at a good level.

“It’s better not to talk about these things [the 100 points tally]. Now we have won game to go, one victory, and we will have to try to win it. Although it is not a title, we are going to try.”

Finally, Vilanova wished Jose Mourinho well as he prepares to depart Real Madrid at the end of the season, paying tribute to the 50-year-old’s winning mentality despite his oft-controversial behaviour.

“His arrival created a real buzz. He is one of the best coaches, and one of the most successful. I wish him well and wish him luck,” Vilanova added.

“He has always managed to win. It’s in his own way, but he has always managed to win.”
