Premier League: Stoke confirm Tony Pulis has departed by mutual consent

Stoke City have confirmed manager Tony Pulis has left the Premier League club by mutual consent with immediate effect.

The Welshman guided Stoke into the Premier League during his second spell at the helm and later led them to an FA Cup final and into Europe.

But the Potters were dragged into relegation trouble last season and Pulis drew criticism from some sections of the Britannia Stadium support over his side’s style of play.

A brief club statement read: “Stoke City and Tony Pulis confirm that they have mutually agreed that Tony will leave the Club with immediate effect.”

Earlier, Stoke winger Matt Etherington had warned fans to be careful what they wish for as news of the manager’s imminent departure began to circulate.

“I’ve spoken to a few of the other boys and they’re shocked as well, it’s hit us,” he told talkSPORT.

“Fans were grumbling saying they wanted him out or wanted a change but it looks like they have got their wish.

“You have to be careful what you wish for in football sometimes. You look at Charlton under Alan Curbishley and look where they are now.

“Hopefully it won’t go that way for us, hopefully we’ll get someone in who will push us on and make us into a top-10 team
“If you look at where Stoke were when he first came in – mid-table in the Championship – you can’t argue he’s done a fantastic job.”

Sky Bet swiftly installed interim Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez as the early favourite to succeed him, with Roberto Di Matteo and ex-QPR manager Mark Hughes other frontrunners.

Pulis first took the Potters job in 2002 and returned in 2006 after a stint at Plymouth Argyle, overseeing promotion to the top flight two years later.

Behind Arsene Wenger, he was the second-longest serving manager in the country following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and David Moyes’s subsequent move to Old Trafford from Everton.

Manchester United players set to buy sir Alex Ferguson grand retirement gift

Manchester United players are holding a £5,000-a-man whip round for retiring boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Alex

It is hoped they will get enough to buy a round-the-world trip for Fergie and his wife Cathy.

Senior pros including Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes want to thank their gaffer, 71, who takes charge of his last match today.

Ideas included a top-of-the-range engraved watch but club sponsors Hublot are planning to give him a commemorative timepiece.

United players suggested the trip after former England boss Fabio Capello let slip his friend had always dreamed of a tour around the globe.

A United source said: “Every player has pledged to chip in, whatever the cost. They want to give him a really fantastic send-off.”

Victoria Beckham chokes back tears as she watches husband David play his final football match

The former pop star looked emotional as she watched on from the crowds as her beau burst into tears as he left the pitch

She’s the queen of the moody pout and is used to showing no emotion when out and about.

But it seems Victoria Beckham isn’t some sort of fashion ice queen – the star, 39, appeared to shed a tear at husband David Beckham’s final football game before his retirement on Saturday.

David was watched by his former Spice Girl wife and their children Harper, Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo as he battled it out on the pitch with his Paris Saint Germain teammates in a game against fellow football club Brest.

Victoria’s sadness may have been sparked by her husband’s sombre mood as he burst into tears as he left the pitch.

David decided to call time on his soccer career when he made the choice to turn down a year’s extension to play for his French team.

The sportsman announced the news earlier this week and released a statement thanking his fans and the former colleagues he’s worked with throughout his career.

He said: “I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level.”

Victoria also thanked her fans for their messages of support by posting an private image of her and a topless David on her Twitter page following the announcement.

She wrote: “Thank you for all your lovely messages, we are so proud of you David x vb.”

That’s all very well and good but we’re not sure why Victoria’s crying – David’s retirement from sport means he has much more time to dedicate to being photographed in his pants. Yay!
