Atletico pave the way for Falcao exit

Radamel Falcao looks set to leave Copa del Rey champions Atletico Madrid, according to the club’s general manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin.

The Colombia international is currently one of the hottest properties in European football after two stunning seasons in La Liga, where his goal-scoring feats have failed to garner as much acclaim as they should have only due to the presence of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of Barcelona.

Nonetheless, his record of 70 goals in 91 games for the club thus far has made him one of the continent’s most-lethal strikers and has resulted in interest from a host of top sides like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

And it now appears he will be allowed to leave the club at the end of the season after firing them into next season’s UEFA Champions League with a third-place finish in La Liga this term.

“Before the start of the season, we spoke with Falcao,” Marin said.

“We promised if he kept the same performances and helped us to qualify for the Champions League, we would help him.

“Whatever decision he takes, we will be with him.”

The Rojiblancos supremo went on to dismiss suggestions the club would falter without their talismanic striker, insisting they had managed to cope with the departures of Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan in recent history.

“We know what makes a good striker,” Marin added. “We have sold and replaced Fernando Torres, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero.

“And now it is Falcao. I don’t know who will be here next season, but you can be sure Atletico will have a strong team.”

Although the 27-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League, recent reports have hinted he could be heading to France to join fallen giants Monaco, who have only just reclaimed their top-flight status after being crowned champions of Ligue 2.

2013 V-League round 10 reviews: B.Binh Duong to down bottom, HAGL to press the top.

4-2 defeat at Kien Giang’s stadium last weekend has officially pushed B.Binh Duong down to the bottom of the standing table. Sweet 2-0 win at Pleiku stadium over V. Ninh Binh helped HAGL shorten the gap with the top SLNA to 1 point.

Felix ( K.Kien Giang ) cheered the win

Coach Huu Thang and his men couldn’t take the home advantages to win 3 points over the young Dong Nai, therefore they had to share point after the 1-1 draw at “fire pan” Vinh stadium. This’s also the reason their position on standing table has been dangerously threatened by HAGL and V.Hai Phong. Cong Vinh opened for SLNA at 15th minute; nevertheless their superficial play forced them to get an equal which came from Henry in the last minutes of the game. K.Kien Giang received good news which was an obviously strong motivation for all players when Kien Long Bank- Kien Giang disbursed money from the fund. Coach Lai Hong Van and players played excellently to won 4-2 at Rach Gia stadium. This direct won against B.Binh Duong who was in the dangerous group  helped K.Kien Giang escape the  penultimate position on the standing table.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai had such an excellent form that they have been undefeated in 7 continuous games in which there are up to 5 wons. It’s certain that they won 3 points against V.Ninh Binh at home Pleiku. Striker Oseni was a hero when he doubled goals into Hoa Lu team. However new soldier of HAGL also leave a sadness with second yellow card. This is forecast to be a portent to the mountain team when Evaldo and Oseni had been playing so excellently in 2013 V-League. At home Long An, XT Sai Gon has dropped their won when Nsi one more time impressively scored two goals in the first half. However, their subjective defensive forced them to pay with respectively goals from Thanh Binh, Januario which help “the Brick” remain 1 valuable point.

Having played impressively, the host lead with Abass’s goal against SHB. Da Nang. However the strength of the Han river team had showed timely when “assassin “Merlo equalized scores for visitors. Moreover, he brought SHB. Da Nang to 2-1 leading.

Unexpectedly, Thanh Hoa received a meaningful present from its “Messi” when Quoc Phuong equalized 2-2 for Thanh Hoa which was more meaningful because May 19th was also Thanh Hoa’s “Messi” birthday. It’s certain that this important goal would be able to help Phuong in form for a call from U23 Viet Nam national Football team for 27th SEA Games in Myanmar.

Round 10 of 2013 V-league was witnessed the spectacular comeback of Ha Noi T&T at V. Hai Phong’s Lach Tray stadium.  Coach Anh Tuan and players had such a favorable that they had an open against goal keeper Duong Hong Son’s nest. Nevertheless, Ha Noi T&T’s strength was asserted with its unbelievable comeback after 90 minutes at Lach Tray. The game was end with 3-2 win for representative from Ha Noi. With this 3 points Ha Noi T&T has been officially back to the race for 2013 V-League champion.

Lahm: Bayern hungry for success

The Roten star insists there will be no hint of complacency in the Champions League final despite their domestic supremacy this season

1369068201-bong-da-lahm1

Bayern Munich right-back Philipp Lahm says his team are hungry for more success as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on May 25.

The Bavarian giants finished this year’s Bundesliga campaign on top with a 26-point advantage over Jurgen Klopp’s side, having lost out to BVB in the title race in the previous two seasons.

And Lahm is convinced neither their dominance in the league nor the loss to Chelsea in last year’s final will affect their concentration levels ahead of the clash at Wembley on Saturday.

“The team is hungry, as we’ve seen throughout the season,” the 29-year-old told Fifa.com.

“We refused to be distracted by our huge lead [in the Bundesliga], nor by losing last season’s Champions League final.

“We’ve stuck to our course, and we’ll continue on it. We’re hoping to win the treble, and I’m very confident. This team could be very successful over the next few years, both at home and in Europe.”

Should Jupp Heynckes team be successful against BVB, they will have the opportunity to clinch an historic treble when they face Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final on June 1, and Lahm has urged his team-mates to go all out for success as the season draws to a close.

“If we win this trophy, I want us to go on and win the German cup a week later,” he added.

Real Madrid have confirmed that Jose Mourinho will leave at the end of the season as speculation grows about his return to Chelsea.

mourinho_2937895

Mourinho is expected to take charge of Chelsea again this summer and Real paved the way for this move by allowing him to leave the Bernabeu by mutual consent.

President Florentino Perez told a press conference: “After the talks with our coach Jose Mourinho we have reached the agreement to end the contractual relationship at the end of this season.

“Both the club and the coach agree that it is the right moment to end this relationship.

“On behalf of the directors, I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for his hard work over the last three years.”

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be lined up to replace him, but Perez insists no deal has been agreed with anyone to succeed Mourinho.

“We have not agreed any pre-contract with any coach,” added Perez. “That is a job for the next few days.

“It is not an issue we will resolve tomorrow.

“I want to show my maximum respect to PSG, their president and all the clubs.”

Perez also paid tribute to the word down by Mourinho at the Bernabeu despite a number of high profile bust-ups with players and the media.

“He is a very demanding coach, with himself and with the rest and this wears you down,” continued Perez.

“The important thing is that we have recovered the level that we didn’t have before.”

Siena 1-2 AC Milan: Mexes the hero books Champions League qualification in dramatic fashion

The Rossoneri had to score twice, including a hotly-disputed penalty, in the closing 10 minutes to secure maximum points and a top-three finish.

281850hp2

AC Milan dramatically secured a Champions League berth next season as their 2-1 success in Siena on Sunday ensured they finished third in Serie A, despite Fiorentina’s emphatic victory over Pescara.

After surviving intense early pressure, the hosts grabbed an unexpected lead when Claudio Terzi was left unmarked to convert a free kick delivered by the highly-impressive Alessandro Rosina. Milan rather lost their discipline and saw captain Massimo Ambrosini dismissed as they struggled to fashion chances but Christian Terlizzi’s red card left the door open and late strikes from Mario Balotelli and Philippe Mexes gave then three scantly-deserved points.

Already consigned to Serie B next season, little was expected of the home side yet when Rosina was allowed time after a quick free kick to pick out a dangerous cross, Terzi was able to head into the net with relative ease.

Milan really toiled thereafter but Balotelli breathed life into the game with eight minutes left as he converted from a penalty after being softly awarded the kick following a tussle with Felipe.

With three minutes left, Mexes scrambled a vital goal after steering the ball into the net at the second attempt following a free kick.

In the early stages the star of the show had been home goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo, who was called into serious action several times in the opening 10 minutes. Balotelli started in a particularly explosive manner and was unfortunate to see a fierce drive turned over by the goalkeeper. Before the break, the Italy striker would also see a free kick pushed wide by Pegolo.

In the opening quarter of an hour, Milan’s front three were electric but would ultimately pay for Mbaye Niang’s lack of composure in front of goal. The young Frenchman headed a decent chance wide and then failed to make contact when Robinho’s low cross invited the opening goal. Shortly afterward the Brazilian had an effort of his own, yet Pegolo athletically parried clear.

Not long after conceding to Terzi, Balotelli had a golden chance to level the match but headed against the underside of the bar from an Ignazio Abate cross.

This proved a pivotal moment in the game as Milan would quickly lose their way and would be increasingly stifled by the well-organised hosts.

Only after Stephan El Shaarawy was introduced after an hour did Milan even begin to offer a renewed threat yet their recovery seemed to have ended when Ambrosini was dismissed for a second booking. Terlizzi was nonsensically sent-off shortly afterwards, though, giving Milan a lifeline.

The mercurial Balotelli was having an erratic game but reminded the hosts of his threat from a free kick saved by Pegoto before finally beating the goalkeeper after being awarded a dubious spot kick.

Now the momentum was firmly with Milan and Mexes struck decisively with three minutes remaining to send them into the Champions League at the expense of Fiorentina in the most remarkable circumstances.

Liga – Barcelona crowned after Valladolid win

La Liga, Camp Nou – Barcelona 2 (Pedro 21, Valiente og 42) Real Valladolid 1 (Perez pen 89)

Eurosport - Barcelona - Xavi, Pedro, Fabregas

Eurosport – Barcelona – Xavi, Pedro, Fabregas

An under-strength Barcelona beat Real Valladolid 2-1 at a sodden Camp Nou – and celebrated their 22nd Liga title at full time.

Pedro opened the scoring with a low finish under Valladolid keeper Jaime.

Barca doubled their advantage three minutes before the break, with Marc Valiente’s inadvertently deflecting Andres Iniesta’s corner into his own net.

Victor Perez converted a late penalty for the visitors but Barca, who were without Lionel Messi, Dani Alves and Carles Puyol, limped to their 30th victory of the season.

With Tito Vilanova’s side having already secured the Liga title with three games to spare and Miroslav Djukic’s Real Valladolid heading for a mid-table finish, there was very little riding on this match in the rain.

But Barca started strongly and were soon rewarded with the opener. Latching onto Xavi’s through ball, Pedro fired under Jaime’s dive for his ninth goal of the season – his sixth in La Liga.

The visitors were restricted to the rare half chance, the best of which fell to Oscar – but his shot from 20 yards was tame.

Barca doubled their lead shortly before the break courtesy of Valiente’s own goal. The former Barca academy player was unable to clear Iniesta’s corner and could only divert it past Jaime into his own net.

The intensity dropped in the second half, but Barca created a cluster of clear chance to add a third. The first was created by the former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, who drove down the left and pulled back to Pedro, but the forward’s thumping shot skimmed off the top of the bar.

Fabregas then had the chance to score himself, but bent a lovely shot a fraction wide, before turning provider moments later with a perfectly-weighted through ball for David Villa, but the former Valencia striker could only draw a save from Jaime – with Pedro somehow failing to score into the empty net on the rebound.

Valladolid substitute Alberto Manucho earned a late penalty when he was tripped by Martin Montoya, and Victor Perez sent Victor Valdes the wrong way from the spot.

But Barca, who have claimed the title without having won the Clasico this season, always had the measure of their opponents and ran out deserving winners – and celebrated the title by lifting the La Liga trophy after the game.

Arsenal seal UCL spot with nervy win

Laurent Koscielny ensured Arsenal of a place in the Champions League qualifiers with the only goal in a tight 1-0 win at Newcastle.

169054827

The central defender prodded home from close range seven minutes after the break to ensure that the Gunners could not be overhauled by north London rivals Tottenham in the fight for fourth place in the Barclays Premier League.

But the result was in doubt until the final kick of the game, with Tottenham’s home win over Sunderland meaning a late equaliser for Alan Pardew’s men would have meant Spurs and not the Gunners getting a shot at Europe’s premier club competition.

Newcastle had motivation of their own, after owner Mike Ashley’s offer of £1million to be shared between the club’s non-footballing staff if they ended a difficult campaign with a victory.

But ultimately, a third successive defeat at St James’ Park, albeit despite a much-improved display, saw the staff go empty-handed and 38-year-old goalkeeper Steve Harper denied the perfect finish to his long career on Tyneside in front of a crowd of 52,354.

The Gunners enjoyed plenty of possession with Santi Cazorla the fulcrum, but with Newcastle defending competently, they found chances few and far between.

Theo Walcott, who was largely effectively contained by makeshift full-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa before the break, whistled a sixth-minute shot over Harper’s crossbar and Koscielny glanced a header harmlessly wide from Cazorla’s 12th-minute corner.

But in the meantime, Magpies striker Papiss Cisse had gone significantly closer, whipping a first-time left-foot effort just over after a fine run and cross by Yanga-Mbiwa.

For all Arsenal were able to retain possession for long periods, they were unable to penetrate with Cheick Tiote harrying in the middle of the park and Yoan Gouffran closing down space further upfield.

Gouffran dragged a left-foot shot across the face of goal with 13 minutes gone and Jonas Gutierrez saw a shot from distance deflected safely into Wojciech Szczesny’s hands four minutes later.

There was little to choose between the sides, but the Gunners had a glorious opportunity to take the lead with 14 minutes of the half remaining.

Aaron Ramsey picked out full-back Kieran Gibbs in acres of space on the left and he cut inside Mathieu Debuchy before squaring to Cazorla, who steered his shot high over.

Yohan Cabaye tested Szczesny from long range with a dipping effort seven minutes later, but Hatem Ben Arfa, who produced several spellbinding solo runs during the first half, could not hit the target after cutting inside five minutes before the break.

Harper, who was warmly applauded by the home fans as the clock ticked into the 37th minute – his shirt number – was called upon for the first time within 60 seconds of the restart, and he will have been mightily relieved to find himself equal to the task after handing the Gunners their chance himself.

The goalkeeper’s scuffed challenge fell to Ramsey, who slid the ball into the path of Walcott, but the England international could not beat Harper as he dived low to his right.

However, Arsenal had emerged in far more determined mood and they went ahead with 52 minutes played when Per Mertesacker headed down Walcott’s free-kick for central defensive partner Koscielny to volley past the helpless Harper from close range.

Vurnon Anita, on for the injured Cabaye, sparked a promising 58th-minute attack for the Magpies which saw Jonas Gutierrez set up Cisse, but his shot was blocked at source by Koscielny.

It took Mertesacker’s intervention to deny Gouffran a 64th-minute equaliser after Anita had picked out Mathieu Debuchy on the right, and the Frenchman was soon replaced by compatriot Sylvain Marveaux as Pardew looked for a way back into the game.

Walcott had a glorious opportunity to make sure at the death when he carved his way through the home defence, but with just Harper to beat, he stabbed the ball against the foot of the far post, but ultimately Koscielny’s effort proved enough.

Maradona clashes with reporters on return home to Buenos Aires

Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona insulted reporters and kicked a photographer after arriving home in Buenos Aires on a visit from Dubai, where he works as a sports ambassador.

GIOTHOI

A fellow passenger on Tuesday’s flight further accused the former Argentina captain and coach, who was accompanied by his 22-year-old girlfriend, Rocio Oliva, of insulting and pushing him.

Maradona, 52, came to Argentina to meet Diego Fernando, the son he had with former girlfriend Veronica Ojeda, and surprise his younger daughter, Giannina, on her birthday, local media reported on Wednesday.

Television news reports showed an ill-tempered Maradona surrounded by microphones and blinded by photographers’ flashes calling reporters “bad people” for asking him about his visit and screaming he would “only talk to his (journalist) friends.”

Ezeiza international airport sources said Maradona had permission to leave in a car from the plane’s docking position but his girlfriend did not, so he opted to accompany her and face the waiting press corps in the terminal.

The fellow passenger, who gave television reporters his name as Ernesto, told them he had offered Maradona a dietary supplement he sells, said: “What little was left of the idol went to the devil. He’s a bully, he insulted me and pushed me.”

Later, Maradona was driven to the home of his former girlfriend in the vicinity of Ezeiza to see his 3-month-old son for the first time.

“On the way, in heavy rain, Maradona made the car stop, got out with a Havana cigar in his hand, took some stones from the edge of the highway and started throwing them at reporters’ cars and kicked a photographer’s leg,” a paparazzo told La Red radio.
