Premier League – Reports claim Ferguson ‘considering retirement’

Sir Alex Ferguson is considering his position as manager of Manchester United, according to major broadsheet newspapers.

1002376-16268599-640-360

A number of Wednesday’s national newspapers, led by the Telegraph, claim the 71-year-old is ready to stand down, bringing an end to his hugely successful 26 and a half years at the helm.

The club were not available for comment when contacted by Press Association Sport on Tuesday night.

Only this past weekend, writing in his programme notes to preview Sunday’s Premier League defeat by Chelsea, Ferguson insisted he was intent on carrying on indefinitely.

There have nevertheless been signs in recent times to suggest Ferguson’s days at the United helm might be numbered.

Last week, United privately confirmed Ferguson had been booked in for hip surgery in August, after the club’s pre-season tour, which involves trips to Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.

The timing of the operation appeared strange, especially as it is believed he could have undergone the procedure immediately following the end of this season.

Then on Monday, bookmakers slashed the odds on David Moyes replacing Ferguson amid reports the Everton manager would spend a season as his fellow Scot’s assistant.

None of these stories have triggered any official comment from the club, who, as a partially floated company, are bound by US Stock Exchange rules and will surely be required to confirm the position in due course given Ferguson’s significance.

If Ferguson does leave, he would do so as Britain’s most successful manager, having claimed his 49th piece of silverware with this season’s title win.

Sunderland 1-1 Stoke: Point keeps 10-man Black Cats in thick of relegation scrap

Despite a numerical disadvantage following Craig Gardner’s dismissal, the home side fought back to draw thanks to John O’Shea’s second-half equaliser.

278102hp2

John O’Shea earned ten-man Sunderland a draw in their bid for Premier League survival, denying Stoke the chance to pull away from danger, though a share of the spoils still keeps both sides in danger.

Jon Walters powered home from close range to give the Potters a ninth minute lead, before the home side were rocked by a straight red card for Craig Gardner following a dangerous tackle on Charlie Adam later in the first half.

But the Black Cats responded after the break through captain John O’Shea’s equaliser, firing home from close range after a Sebastian Larsson set-piece, leaving both side’s Premier League futures uncertain.

Paolo Di Canio made two changes to the side that was thrashed by Aston Villa last Monday, with Jack Colback and James McLean coming in to replace Phil Bardsley and the suspended Stephane Sessegnon.

Pulis also made two alterations to his team as they sought a third straight league win, bringing former Black Cats midfielder Dean Whitehead and Marc Wilson in for Glenn Whelan and Andy Wilkinson.

The hosts found themselves perched two points above the bottom three following results at the weekend, and knew nothing less than a victory would suffice if they were to begin pulling away from danger.

That appeared to resonate with the players as they stormed out of the blocks, enjoying a large share of possession, only for their approach play to be foiled by a lack of finesse and precision with their final ball.

Their imprudence was swiftly punished by Stoke, who broke the deadlock in familiar fashion. Over half their league goals have come from set-pieces this season, so it was no surprise that their first corner of the game bred the opening goal, with Charlie Adam picking outWalters. The Irish striker reacted quickly to power the ball in off the underside of the crossbar after his initial header hit Danny Graham.

Frustrations soon boiled over and the Black Cats were reduced to 10-men just past the half hour mark after Gardner flew in late on Adam prompting referee Lee Mason to send the midfielder for an early bath.

Clear-cut chances were sparse, with Adam Johnson firing a free kick narrowly wide in first half injury time and it was he that carried the biggest Sunderland threat after the interval, weaving his way in-field from the right flank and powering a fierce 20-yard drive into the chest of Asmir Begovic.

Stoke continued to threatening on the break as the home side committed bodies forward, with Cameron Jerome denied by a superb block from O’Shea after Ryan Shotton teed him up.

And it proved significant as the Black Cats finally levelled just after the hour mark. Whitehead inadvertently glanced Sebastian Larsson’s corner towards the back post and the unmarkedO’Shea, who gratefully stabbed the ball over the line, eliciting the customary wild celebration from Di Canio.

With parity restored both teams went in search of a winner, with Whitehead drilling straight at Mignolet and Danny Rose shaving the post with a spectacular hit at the other end, but neither side could find the win they truly required.

League One – Brentford win shootout to reach Wembley

League One play-off semi-final second leg, Griffin Park – Brentford 3 (Rooney og 24, Donaldson 40, 47) Swindon Town 3 (Rooney 44, Devera 57, Flint 90+5) A.E.T; Brentford win 5-4 on penalties.

1004229-16290835-640-360

Adam Forshaw scored the decisive penalty as Brentford beat Swindon 5-4 on penalties to reach the League One play-off final against Yeovil Town.

Brentford had seemed destined for victory at 3-1, but were forced to face extra time when Adem Clint made it 3-3 in the sixth minute of injury time.

The hosts were well on top in the first half and took a deserved lead when Adam Rooney headed into his own net from Luke Forrester’s corner and the Bees doubled their advantage when Clayton Donaldson rifled in from the edge of the box.

Rooney then scored at the right end, scuffing in after Brentford failed to clear, but Donaldson made it 3-1 with a fine individual effort 90 seconds after the restart.

Joe Devera lashed in from close-range to make it 3-2 and, with five

minutes of added time almost up, Flint sent a last gasp header past Simon Moore to force extra time.

But Moore saved from Swindon’s Miles Storey in a nail biting shootout as Brentford booked a Wembley date with Yeovil, who defeated Sheffield United earlier in the day.

All eyes were on Griffin Park penalty villain Marcello Trotta, who was handed his first start since spurning the chance to send Brentford to the Championship with his missed penalty against Doncaster.

But Trotta was impressive as Brentford utterly dominated the opening 45 minutes against a lacklustre Swindon. His perseverance earned the Bees a corner from which Rooney headed into his own net.

Swindon had no response to Brentford’s superiority, and fell further behind when Trotta found Donaldson, who spun on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner for his 19th goal of the season.

With Brentford seemingly marching towards Wembley, Swindon struck back against the run of play. Sloppy Brentford defending allowed Rooney a sight at goal, and his scuffed shot beat Simon Moore.

Forrester, impressive throughout, could have re-established Brentford’s two-goal advantage when his stunning volley from Donaldson’s excellent cross was saved well by Wes Foderingham.

But Brentford moved ahead 90 seconds after the restart when Donaldson intercepted a loose pass on the halfway line and motored towards the Swindon goal, finishing a blistering run with a delightful chip over the on rushing Foderingham.

Just when Brentford thought their lead was an unassailable one, Swindon pegged them back again. This time Devera hammered the ball in from close range after Brentford failed to clear.

Swindon threw everything at Brentford in search of an equaliser, and were finally rewarded when Flint headed in at the far post from a corner, breaking Bees hearts again.

But Brentford survived the additional 30 minutes and won the shootout to cap a thrilling game and move to within 90 minutes of Championship football.

Rafa’s future is in England, just not at Chelsea

Rafael Benitez has been in a difficult situation from day one at Chelsea but if you look at the job he has done as a whole I think you have to say that it has been impressive.

0605_Rafa_blog

People will point to the fact that he lost the World Club Cup final and what looked to be on paper a relatively comfortable League Cup semi-final against Swansea. There was also the FA Cup exit, but I think he is a manager who needs time to stamp his style on things –not loads of time, but three or four months to implement his ideas. We are beginning to see his influence come through now.

One of his key strengths is his ability to keep players fresh. He was criticised all the time at Liverpool for his rotation policy and for resting players but Chelsea have had what can only be described as a brutal fixture pile-up over the past few months, yet somehow he has managed to keep all their players available. They are all playing well, they look full of energy and you have to give the manager credit for that.

They are in the Europa League final and I think they will finish third in the Premier League – so under the circumstances, I think he has done an exceptional job.

The Manchester United match was not one for the neutrals but that just shows another thing that Rafa’s teams are good at – even when his sides are not playing well, they stay in the game and they don’t lose their shape. The first thing they do is make sure they don’t lose the game and that gives them a chance to nick it like they did on Sunday.

United took a few chances with their starting XI but even bearing that in mind, not many teams win at Old Trafford, so it was an impressive victory for Chelsea.

Having said all that, I still feel it is impossible to see Benitez at Chelsea next season. I would have fully expected the fans to have laid off him by this stage – but that hasn’t been the case.

The Chelsea fans have a new toy with all these Jose Mourinho rumours and are spending a lot of their energy singing his name.

So it just doesn’t look like the right place for Rafa but he has done his CV no harm these last few months and that’s fair enough – all he can do is look after number one.

If you look at Rafa’s short spell in Italy and the time he spent in between jobs, I think he now realises that the place that’s really suited to his managerial style is the Premier League.

On first glance there may not be too many potential jobs out there for him but that could change pretty quickly. There are always going to be managers in the hot seat. You can’t tell me that Alan Pardew at Newcastle is not under pressure, for example, and then there is the unresolved situation of David Moyes at Everton.

Rafa’s links to Anfield might make the Everton job a near impossible option – but I do think there will be other positions out there that could suit both Rafa and the club in search of a manager.

+++

The other big talking point from the game at Old Trafford was David Luiz’s reaction after being fouled by Rafael in an incident that saw the United full-back get sent-off.

Luiz was caught by the cameras laughing on the ground and I admit that as I watched it live I instantly thought: “I don’t like that.”

However, then when you think about it, he’s on the ground smiling before a red card has been shown, he’s not laughing or winking, thinking he has got a man sent-off.

I look at David Luiz and I see an inoffensive character – he plays on the edge at times but I don’t think he is a bad guy and I just can’t buy that he was lying on the floor thinking: “I’ve got what I want from this situation, as Rafael is about to get sent-off.”

I refuse to believe that is why he was laughing – there is a culture of anger in football at the moment and people always look to jump to the worst conclusions. They want to believe he was laughing because he got Rafael sent-off but I just think he was looking at the fans, having a little smirk and thinking that his side were about to secure a great win.

He might have even been smiling, thinking ‘why did Rafael do that?’ – because it was a ridiculous challenge.

Perez calls for unity at Madrid

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has again called for unity at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, but his comments did little to dampen speculation that Jose Mourinho will soon depart the club.

florentinoperez20130418_275x155

The new comments came at a Real Madrid Foundation event on Monday, less than 48 hours after Madrid defender Pepe criticised Mourinho for showing a lack of respect for currently benched goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Talk of Mourinho’s anticipated departure continues to grow in Spain, with one outlet on Monday reporting that the coach was spotted buying €200-worth of packing materials in Ikea as further evidence he will be leaving this summer.

Perez appeared to suggest he could trust his club’s footballers to stick together, but was less certain about their coach’s commitment.

“We have two new and big challenges in front of us, the basketball Final Four in London and the Copa del Rey final,” Perez said. “Now we must be united, for our people and our supporters – to give everything and deliver the best we can. Our players will do that.”

Madrid’s basketball side face Barcelona on May 10 in London in their Euroleague semi-final, while the football team’s Copa del Rey final against city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu on May 17.

As internal Bernabeu feuds have bubbled over in public in recent months, Perez has regularly used public appearances to give an impression of calm at the top of the club.

In December, he tried and failed to mend bridges between Mourinho and the Madrid sports media. In January, he called a press conference to deny a Marcastory that captain Casillas and vice-captain Sergio Ramos had demanded Mourinho be dismissed at the end of the season. In April, he announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would stay at the club, while refusing to answer questions about the future of Madrid’s other high-profile Portuguese star.

Mourinho claimed again in the aftermath of last week’s Champions League semi-final exit to Borussia Dortmund that he and his “friend” Perez would sit down for an amicable chat to discuss their future once this season ends.

Media reports in Spain, however, suggest that the two men are currently engaged in a high-stake game of nerve, where Mourinho would like to be fired and get a big pay-off, while Perez would prefer that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich paid a handsome fee to release the ex-Chelsea manager from his current contract.

Premier League – Ferguson slams ‘dying swan’ David Luiz

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hit out at Chelsea’s David Luiz for getting Rafael sent off at Old Trafford as the Blues picked up a 1-0 win.

1003756-16285159-640-360

Chelsea found the winner in the 87th minute via a Juan Mata shot deflected off Phil Jones, but Fergie was fuming about an incident two minutes later.

As United chased an equaliser, Rafael and Luiz tangled in the corner of the field. Luiz appeared to hold his compatriot off with an elbow, who responded by kicking out at him. Luiz fell to the ground and was seen on camera smiling as referee Howard Webb blew his whistle to send Rafael off.

Ferguson said after the match that Luiz’s play-acting had been instrumental in the referee issuing a red card, and that it was an unwelcome trait in non-British players.

“The ref has been bought by the fact Luiz is rolling about,” he said. “But whether the ref will do anything about it, I doubt very much. When a player retaliates he gets punished the most. Luiz rolled about. You see that with these European, foreign and South American players.

“He [Da Silva] retaliates but Luiz quite clearly elbows him twice, then rolls about like a diving swan and that convinces the referee. He was smiling. It’s bad. What kind of professional is that? He [Da Silva] was elbowed and he retaliated. That’s what always happens, the player who retaliates always gets the bigger penalty and it was clear that Luiz elbowed him twice.

“It was rash what he [Da Silva] did, he’s a young lad and should know better but retaliation never works. I wouldn’t say it was violent conduct. The referee hasn’t even seen it, I don’t think he could see it at all. But he has gone with the fact that Luiz has rolled about on the floor and I think that convinced him it was a red card.”
