Women’s Footbal chief Lâm to complain about Myanmar referee to AFF

Dương Vũ Lâm wants to complain to the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) about the Myanmar referee who supervised the AFF Women’s Football Championship final on August 4.

This follows the referee’s decision not to recognise a goal scored by Việt Nam in the match with Thailand.

Lâm is Việt Nam women’s football team’s chief of mission at the tournament.

Thailand beat Việt Nam 7-6 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in regular time and extra-time.

In the penalty shootout, Nguyễn Thị Liễu shot the ball passing the lime line to the goal of the Thai team, but referee Thein Thein Aye didn’t acknowledge her goal.

After the match, Lâm and the Việt Nam training board spoke to the referee and the AFF representatives, but the match result was not changed.

“Liễu’s goal was legal. We will send the match video to the Việt Nam Football Federation (VFF) and then send our petition to the AFF,” Lâm said.

“The referee didn’t acknowledge Liễu’s goal when the ball passed the lime line. The Việt Nam team were very persistent, however, later we agreed to continue playing. It meant that we accepted the referee’s decisions and we couldn’t change the result,” Lê Hoài Anh, general secretary of the VFF, said.

“Every sport has a rule of play. We must respect that rule. The VFF will not lodge a complaint about the referee’s management,” Anh said.

Vietnam finish runners-up at AFF women’s championship

Vietnam missed out on the overall cup at the 2016 AFF Women’s Championship in Myanmar after losing a penalty shootout to familiar opponents Thailand in the final clash at Mandalarthiri Stadium in Mandalay on August 4.

Chơi lấn lướt hơn, nhưng Tuyển Việt Nam mất chức vô địch đầy tiếc nuối
Inspired by a convincing 2-0 win over Thailand in the group-stage competition, Vietnamese players entered the decisive match with great confidence determined to bring home the third title in the tournament’s history.

However, their ambition was dealt a big blow as Chuong Thi Kieu headed into her own net in the sixth minute, gifting Thailand with an early advantage.

After the loss, Vietnam intensified their attacks and created a number of opportunities to score; however, the strikes by Nguyen Thi Muon, Tuyet Dung and Minh Nguyet were not cunning enough to beat Thai goalkeeper Boonsing.

Meanwhile, Thailand proactively played counterattack and threatened the Vietnamese goal a number of times, forcing goalie Kieu Trinh to work hard to retain the score.

Just as a loss for Vietnam seemed inevitable, striker Minh Nguyen came through with the goods curling a 85th-minute shot into Boonsing’s net to bring the match back to the starting line.

With the 1-1 score unchanged after 90 official minutes of play as well as the following extra times, the match had to be decided via penalty shoot-outs.

In the shootout, four-time finalists Vietnam were unable to secure victory loosing 5-6 to Thailand, thus failing to capture their third championship titles in history.

With the narrow final victory in hand, Thailand successfully defended their 2015 crown won in Vietnam.

Hosts Myanmar were named the third-placed finishers at this year’s tournament after edging out U20 Australia with a score of 1-0 in another match the same day.

Win Theingi Tun of Myanmar won the “top scorer” award of the tournament with a nine-goal tally.

Quảng Ninh, Hà Nội T&T in Cup final

Quảng Ninh Coal made the final of the National Cup after their goalless draw against National Cup defending champions Becamex Bình Dương yesterday at the Cẩm Phả Stadium.

Các cầu thủ Hà Nội T&T vui mừng khi giành quyền vào chơi trận chung kết

With an aggregate result of 1-1 after a two-legged tie, Quảng Ninh Coal are the team to enter the final as they scored a goal on Bình Dương’s ground on July 20.

In the other semi-final, former champions Hà Nội T&T defeated Quảng Nam 4-2. They went through to the final with the aggregate score of 7-5.

Cẩm Phả has always been a lucky ground for the hosts whenever they have entertained Becamex Bình Dương, and it was the same yesterday.

In the second leg match of the semi-final round, at least four chances by the visitors went waste for various reasons.

National three-time Golden Ball winner Lê Công Vinh wasted a penalty shootout at the 68th minute.

He beat goalkeeper Huỳnh Tuấn Linh, who faulted striker Ivan Firer in the box resulting in a penalty for Bình Dương, but his shot flew put after hitting the bar.

It was the third time the bar had stopped the shots from Bình Dương players.

Earlier, the national team forward made a banana-shaped free kick from 20m distance. The ball was far from Linh’s reach to the A corner and went wide.

Đặng Văn Thành also tried to open the score in the first half. He launched a solo run from the central area to near goalkeeper Linh’s area. His left-foot shot was strong and straight but again met the bar.

Just a minute after the interval midfielder Nguyễn Trọng Hoàng stole the ball and ran through to Linh’s area, but his finish sent the ball to the left pole.

Quảng Ninh also had several opportunities but some were inaccurate and some were blocked by keeper Trần Đức Cường.

In Hà Nội, midfielder Nguyễn Văn Quyết scored a double for Hà Nội T&T which was sandwiched by the opener of Phạm Văn Thành in the 17th minute, and Hoàng Vũ Samson, 25 minutes after the break.

Quảng Nam’s Brazilian Dos Reis R Claudecir also scored a double while Đinh Thanh Trung netted in the additional time.

The final match will be organised in a two-leg format.

In the first leg, Quảng Ninh Coal will welcome Hà Nội T&T at their holy land of Cẩm Phả on September 24.

The second leg match will be played five days later as Hà Nội T&T are the hosts at the Hàng Đẫy Stadium

Neymar fails to spark Brazil in South Africa stalemate

Barcelona star Neymar failed to provide the expected flying start to Brazil’s quest for a maiden football Olympic gold medal as the hosts were held 0-0 by 10-man South Africa in their Rio 2016 opener on Thursday (Aug 4).

brazil

Neymar is by far the biggest name taking part in the football competition and has been tasked with restoring pride to Brazilian football after a catastrophic 7-1 defeat to Germany on home soil at the 2014 World Cup.

However, he endured a frustrating afternoon on a sandy and slow surface in Brasilia as South Africa held out despite Mothobi Mvala’s red card half an hour from time.

Group A is now in a four-way tie on one point after Iraq and Denmark also played out a scoreless draw earlier on Thursday.

In contrast to the vast swaths of empty stands across the six cities being used to host the men’s and women’s football tournaments on the opening two days, the hosts commanded a near-capacity 70,000 crowd.

However, the home fans weren’t treated to the victory procession many expected from a Brazilian side not only boasting Neymar, but also Manchester City’s new £27 million (US$35.4 million) signing Gabriel Jesus and Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain.

Indeed, South Africa’s Lebo Mothiba had a host of chances to cause an almighty upset, but failed to make a ragged Brazilian defence pay for early tournament nerves.

Neymar was proudly sporting the captain’s armband, but his desire to get involved by dropping deep often left him too far from the South African goal to make a telling impact.

The Barcelona star did have Brazil’s best two efforts of the first-half with strikes from outside the box that forced South African ‘keeper Itumeleng Khune into two stunning saves.

South Africa dominated the early stages of the second-half with Mothiba and captain Keagen Dolly coming close, but their chances appeared to have gone when defender Mvala was sent-off for two quickfire yellow cards.

Brazil ramped up the pressure as Jesus somehow turned the ball only onto the post with the goal gaping, whilst a dipping drive from Neymar landed on the roof of the net.

However, South Africa resisted to add problems on the field for the hosts to a Games build-up already marred by doping scandals and fears surrounding the Zika virus.

World champions Germany begin their campaign in against 2012 gold medallists Mexico in Salvador with Fiji and South Korea also in action in Group C later.

Gold medallists in 2008 and 2012 Argentina face Portugal in the other standout game of the day in Rio with both sides looking for fresh talent to for the post Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo era.

Honduras beat Algeria 3-2 in the other game in Group D.

Nigeria arrived in the Amazonian city of Manaus just hours before their match against Japan as the initial plane intended to take the team from their training base in Atlanta on Wednesday was deemed “too small” for the squad and staff.

Sweden and Colombia are also in action in Manaus, nearly 3000km from Rio, in Group B.

Monaco played host to the Turkish giants at the Stade Louis II looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg and they wasted little time in opening the scoring before going to win 3-1 on the night and progress to the play-offs.

Falcao, wearing the captain’s armband, played in strike partner Valere Germain and his shot beat goalkeeper Ertugrul Taskiran low at his near post to give Monaco a third-minute lead.

The hosts then won a penalty when Nabil Dirar was brought down by Hasan Ali Kaldirim and Falcao – who had scored in the first leg – sent the ‘keeper the wrong way from the spot to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute.

However, the Colombian then came off with a hamstring injury just before the interval and Fenerbahce fought back after the break.

Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike, scorer of a brace in the first leg, hit the bar before squaring the tie on aggregate in the 53rd minute when he turned in Martin Skrtel’s low cross from six yards with the home defence appealing for offside.

Nevertheless Monaco were not to be denied and Dirar set up Germain to lash in and take Leonardo Jardim’s men through 4-3 on aggregate.

In Glasgow, Scottish champions Celtic were grateful to young French striker Moussa Dembele as he came off the bench to score a last-minute penalty that gave them a 2-1 victory on the night and took them through 3-2 on aggregate.

Brendan Rodgers’ side, who suffered an embarrassing defeat to Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar in the previous round before going through on aggregate, had the edge in the tie after a 1-1 draw in Kazakhstan last week.

Leigh Griffiths scored Celtic’s goal in the first leg and he put them ahead at Parkhead with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Astana, who appeared in the group stage last season, levelled the tie courtesy of Agim Ibraimi just after the hour and extra time was on the cards until Igor Shitov was sent off for conceding a last-gasp penalty that Dembele converted for the winner.

SHAKHTAR, OLYMPIAKOS OUT

Celtic will now be seeded for the play-off round and could come up against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, Ludogorets Razgrad of Bulgaria, FC Copenhagen, Hapoel Beer-Sheva of Israel or Irish surprise package Dundalk.

Possible opponents for Monaco in the play-offs are Manchester City, Porto, Villarreal, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Ajax.

The Dutch former European champions came from behind to beat PAOK 2-1 in Greece and go through 3-2 on aggregate.

Stefanos Athanasiadis gave PAOK an early lead but captain Davy Klaassen levelled from the spot in first-half stoppage time before firing home an 88th-minute winner.

In other games, Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk lost on penalties to Young Boys in Switzerland after the hosts won 2-0 on the night with a Yuya Kubo brace to level the tie on aggregate.

Greek champions Olympiakos are also out, losing 1-0 to Hapoel Beer-Sheva in Israel after a goalless first leg, Shir Tzedek scoring the decisive goal.

FC Copenhagen, Steaua Bucharest, Salzburg and Legia Warsaw progressed, as did Rostov, the Russians winning 2-0 away to Anderlecht to advance 4-2 on aggregate.

Việt Nam rơi vào bảng dễ thở ở AFF Cup 2016 Group B is considered an easier group for world no. 139 Vietnam as they will only face lower rated teams.

Vietnam remained unbeaten in their previous three meetings with Myanmar, including two resounding 6-0 and 7-1 wins in a friendly match on July 2, 2014 and in the group stage of the 2010 AFF Cup, and a 1-1 draw in the group stage of the 2012 tournament.

Malaysia is the toughest challenge for Vietnam in Group B as the 2010 champions eliminated Vietnam in the semifinals 5-4 two years ago.

The August 2 draw saw reigning champions Thailand join Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines in Group A.

The biennial tournament will be held from November 19 to December 17, with eight teams competing according to a round robin format in two groups to decide the top two teams from each group for the semifinals.

Vietnam will play their group opener against Myanmar on November 20 before taking on Malaysia and qualification winners on November 23 and 26 respectively.
