League One – Late winner sends Yeovil to Wembley

League One play-off semi final second leg, Huish Park – Yeovil Town 2 (Dawson 6, Upson 85) Sheffield United 0.

Edward Upson’s towering late header sent Yeovil into the League One play-off final after the Glovers beat Sheffield United 2-0 and 2-1 on aggregate.

Kevin Dawson struck early to put Yeovil ahead but Sheffield United dominated for long periods and threatened to level when Jamie Murphy crashed a shot against the bar.

Yeovil spurned chances to put the game to bed and the game seemed to be heading towards extra time.

But Upson sent Yeovil to Wembley with an 85th minute header, with thousands of Yeovil fans invading the pitch at full time.

Huish Park was rocking at kick off, as the prospect of Championship football was touching distance away. And the sparkling atmosphere spurred Yeovil on, as they started the stronger.

Pinning the Blades back for the first five minutes, it was no surprise when they when ahead through Dawson, who latched onto James Hayter’s brilliant through ball, and finished first time under the on rushing George Long.

But Yeovil failed to capitalise on their advantage and allowed United a series of first half chance, that should have seen them level before the break.

The best of them fell to Murphy, who collected Callum McFadzean’s pass and bent a superb shot beyond Marek Stech, only to see the ball crash back off the bar.

Yeovil improved after the break and created a host of chances to win it, with the best chance headed over by top scorer Paddy Madden from six yards.

But with time running out, Upson met Madden’s pinpoint cross from the right to head in a priceless winning goal that gives the Glovers a shot at Championship football, 10 years after they were promoted from the Conference.

Serie A: Napoli head coach Walter Mazzarri refuses to rest on laurels

Napoli head coach Walter Mazzarri is refusing to rest on his laurels despite leading his side to the precipice of Champions League football next year.

Walter-Mazzarri_2901604-650x344

While they now cannot catch Juventus, who sealed another Serie A success on Sunday, the Partenopei remain well placed to play in Europe’s elite competition next season as they are seven points clear of third-placed AC Milan with three games to go.

They can guarantee runners-up spot with victory at mid-table Bologna on Wednesday although Mazzarri is not taking anything for granted against a team he refers to as Napoli’s “bete noire”.

“Let’s remain focused, we still need three points,” said Mazzarri on the club’s official website following their 3-1 win over Inter Milan.

“I am satisfied with this victory, but I was afraid that we would not close the game because although we had many efforts at goal they managed to draw. However, we were able to impose our supremacy and achieve a well-deserved victory.”

“Now we must go on with this intensity. On Wednesday we are going to play against Bologna, our bete noir.

Milan will also hope to move one step closer to Champions League football when they play rock-bottom Pescara. The Rossoneri went four points clear of fourth-placed Fiorentina, who next travel to relegation-threatened Siena, by edging out Torino on Sunday and will be looking to carry that momentum into their clash at the Stadio Adriatico.

“The match against Pescara will be fundamental. Winning there and maintaining our lead on Roma and Fiorentina would be great,” said vice-president Adriano Galliani.

Roma can go level on points with Fiorentina if they can follow up Saturday’s win at La Viola with another three points against Chievo in Tuesday night’s only fixture.

The Giallorossi can approach this match with confidence as they are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions and have claimed four wins in their last five.

Juventus will be aiming to celebrate claiming back-to-back Scudettos at Atalanta on Wednesday, but they must do so without Paul Pogba, whose season is over after being suspended for three matches for spitting at Palermo defender Salvatore Aronica yesterday.

At the other end of the table, Palermo host Europa League chasers Udinese hoping to close the three-point gap on fellow strugglers Genoa, who could move above Torino with victory over Giampiero Ventura’s men.

Inter Milan have lost five of their last six matches in all competitions so will therefore be looking for a much-needed three points against Lazio, Sampdoria host Catania, while Parma travel to Cagliari.

Luis Suarez receives backing from Liverpool legend Ian Rush

Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush has told Sky Sports Luis Suarez’s 10-game ban is too long and saluted the Uruguayan’s tenacity.

The 26-year-old forward recently received the suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic’s arm during his team’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

There have been fears at Anfield the controversial forward would walk out on English football, but it seems increasingly likely that won’t happen with the club promising to help the player manage his emotions.

It is an approach fully endorsed by Rush and the Welshman, who played for Liverpool for 15 years over two spells, told the Soccer Extra Bank Holiday Special: “Luis is a lovely lad, a family man and he deserves what he gets but he’s a very talented man.

“The ban was a bit harsh. But that’s the sort of animal he is. If you take that out of him you lose the qualities he’s got. He’s been absolutely superb and without doubt the player of the year for Liverpool.

“He’s let the club down with him missing so many games. But he’s such a special talent. He’s got to take the punishment and come back a much better person.”

Suarez will miss Liverpool’s remaining Premier League games this season and the opening six domestic matches of the next campaign.

Serie A: AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has paid tribute to his side

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has paid tribute to his side for sticking together despite a forgettable season.

The Rossoneri are used to challenging for domestic and European honours but this season saw them exit the Champions League in the last 16, while Juventus yesterday claimed the Serie A title with three games remaining.

Sunday’s 1-0 win over Torino helped Milan move four points clear of fourth-placed Fiorentina, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Roma 24 hours earlier.

“There are some games in the season that you have to win this way as the result is so important. Credit to everyone, even those who aren’t playing that much,” Allegri said on the club’s official website.

“In the last 26 years, Milan have always been playing at the top end of the table but this year it’s been difficult, especially at the start, we dropped a lot of points but the club and team stuck together and worked hard and now the results have improved.”

Mario Balotelli was once again Milan’s hero as the striker netted the only goal of the game in the 84th minute to give Milan some breathing room in third place.

The Italy international has scored nine goals since swapping Manchester City for Milan in January, helping to ease the burden on Stephen El Shaarawy.

However, chief executive Adriano Galliani instead preferred to focus on the performance of goalkeeper Christian Abbiati, who made a string of excellent saves in the first half to keep the scores level.

“It was a tough game and one that we could have lost. All credit to Abbiati who in my opinion saved our skins,” said Galliani.

“He was the best player on the pitch. He’ll be here next year for sure.

“He has a lifetime policy here. He’s the kind of keeper who saves results as well as shots.”

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia not satisfied with form this season

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has admitted that he is disappointed with his performances this season.

valencia-antonio_2900831-650x344

The Ecuador international was the players’ and fans’ player of the year last term, but he feels he has failed to repeat that form in the current campaign despite United’s cruise to the Premier League title.

Valencia is delighted to have secured a league winners’ medal, but he insists he would have contributed more to the title success had it not been for injury.

“If you make a comparison with the previous season it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for,” Valencia told MUTV. “I have maybe not been able to recreate the form of last year. But I have not been at the same fitness level.

“When you have suffered from a couple of injuries, sometimes it is hard to get back to those fitness levels where you can play full of confidence and show your ability in its best light.

“Sometimes it takes a while to get the rhythm of how you normally play if recovery from injury takes longer than you think.

“Looking back I am still reasonably happy with my contribution, I managed to feature in 28 Premier League games, but hopefully pre-season will be a chance to get fit.

“When things are not going particularly well and I am not on my best form I tend to be a little harder on myself. All the time, you want everything to turn our perfectly. At those times, you do think about your form.”

Respectable

With his contract due to expire in two years’ time next season is going to be a big one for Valencia, when improvement will be demanded if he is going to secure his future at Old Trafford.

Two Premier Leagues in four seasons is not a bad return for a player who cost United £16million when he signed from Wigan.

And it is clear this term’s success has been welcomed given the anguish United suffered 12 months ago.

“That is two medals in four years, which is respectable for me,” he said. “Last year was terrible. It was a trophyless season and we can’t go two seasons running without bringing home some kind of silverware.

“The aim was to win something and the league title fits the bill perfectly.”

There is no doubt Robin van Persie’s arrival from Arsenal has been the catalyst for United’s 20th championship.

Valencia is the first to acknowledge the Dutchman’s contribution, which seems certain to end with Van Persie landing the Golden Boot award for the second season running.

However, he questions whether United would have found it impossible to win the league without their 29-goal forward because the hunger inside United’s dressing room ran pretty deep.

“It is a delight to play alongside Robin,” said Valencia. “He has great ability, huge skill levels and can almost solve any problem he comes up against. As a winger it is a joy to play and work alongside him.

“But destiny is a funny thing. We had so much determination at the start of the season because we wanted to make up for last year and win the title.

“So whilst you can’t doubt what Robin has added, we may have done it without him.”

Premier League: Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany is focused on West Brom

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany is focusing on securing UEFA Champions League football before the FA Cup final.

Komany_2893964-650x344

Roberto Mancini’s side take on Wigan at Wembley on Saturday with the chance of winning their second FA Cup in three seasons.

But first up is Tuesday’s Premier League home clash with West Brom, with a win needed to secure a place in next season’s Champions League for second-placed City.

Kompany told reporters: “Saturday is a big, big day for the club, it’s massive and everyone realises that.

“But it would be nice to win the game against West Brom first. That would set us up really nicely to focus on the final.

“It’s really important that we qualify for the Champions League first.

“There is no other way to think about this game.

“Until we are safe for that Champions League spot we have to play the game like every other game.”

Sunderland v Stoke preview: Relegation remains a threat for both sides

Relegation remains an imminent threat for both Sunderland and Stoke when they face each other at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland-Stoke-City-Monday-Night-Football-L_2935851-650x344

Weekend wins for Aston Villa and Wigan mean there is added pressure on the Black Cats and the Potters in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Monday evening.

The home team are at greater risk as they sit just one place and two points above the 18th-placed Latics and confidence is likely to have been shaken following last week’s 6-1 defeat to Villa.

It was a shocking result at a time when Paolo Di Canio appeared to have turned things around for the Wearsiders with back-to-back wins and suggests that the underlying problems remain.

Tony Pulis is another manager who surely felt the prospect of dropping out of the Premier League had vanished after winning consecutive matches against QPR and Norwich.

The Welshman even seemed quite emotional upon reaching the 40-point mark, having faced serious questions for the first time in many years at the Britannia Stadium.

But with Tottenham up next for the Staffordshire club and a final day trip to Southampton, fears of relegation have not been extinguished just yet.

If that spurs Stoke on to a third straight victory then it could make for a dark day at the Stadium of Light as Wigan would then be in a position to leave the Black Cats in the drop zone with victory over Swansea on Tuesday.

Messi is still the best, says Pique

The defender feels the Argentine ace will continue to stand at the top of football’s pantheon for many years to come, and reacted to Tito Vilanova’s comments on his future

252200hp2

Gerard Pique has believes Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi proved he is still the world’s best player with his two goals in the 4-2 victory over Betis at the weekend.

The Argentina international was a spectator on the substitutes bench as his side crashed out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich in midweek, but he returned to action with a sparkling performance on Sunday.

“We know that Leo’s the best player in the world and he will continue to be the best for many years to come. He knows to be at the right place at the right time,” Pique told reporters.

The defender then went on to discuss Tito Vilanova’s comments that Pique could be part of a potential squad overhaul this summer.

“I hold Tito in the highest regard, he was coaching me when I was 15 years old. I don’t feel bad about what was said yesterday. He is the manager and he has every right to say what he wants,” the 26-year-old stated.

“I said that we needed to improve, and I was talking about myself on a personal level. We all need to improve next season.”

Messi magic sees Barcelona close in on La Liga but leaves fans wondering what might have been against Bayern

The Argentine came off the bench to provide the inspiration for Barcelona and show the Catalans just what they had been missing in their Champions League loss last week.

277738hp2

Barcelona’s miserable week was about to take a turn for the worse. Brutally beaten by Bayern Munich on Wednesday as Lionel Messi watched on helplessly from the bench, the Catalans found themselves 2-1 down at home to Betis on Sunday in what was another poor performance. Luckily, this time their saviour was primed for a starring cameo role. With just over half an hour left, on came Messi to make the difference. And what a difference it was.

Even the Argentine’s appearance on the sidelines appeared to lift his side and the crowd at Camp Nou. As he waited on the edge of the pitch to replace David Villa, the striker scored a header to make it 2-2. The psychological balance had shifted. The stage was set.

And just three minutes after his timely re-emergence, Messi curled a fantastic free kick into the top right-hand corner to make it 3-2. This was the inspiration that Barcelona had been missing. Leo, though, was merely getting started.

Another free kick was crashed onto the angle of bar and post nine minutes later with Adrian well beaten again, and a second strike for the Argentine followed shortly afterwards as the four-time Ballon d’Or winner converted a magnificent move involving Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez. With Messi on the pitch, Barcelona’s pretty passing and possession play suddenly made much more sense.

Further chances came and went for the Catalans in the last 20 minutes. In the dying seconds of the match, Messi burst through the Betis defence all alone and looked certain to claim his hat-trick, only to be thwarted by an alert Adrian. And as he ran off the pitch, the Argentine swung a kick at the ball in anger, as if a week’s frustration had all been encapsulated in one isolated moment.

“Messi is in good condition to compete,” Barca’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said afterwards. “But surely not for 90 minutes. He is a marvellous player and he made the match more easy.”

That was an understatement. This victory had looked anything but guaranteed until the 25-year-old’s introduction. Barca had been behind after just two minutes and trailed again at the interval following an unstoppable strike from Ruben Perez. Looking fragile in defence once again and missing chances at the other end, the Catalans were making a meal of a match they would be expected to win comfortably at home – with or without Messi.

“The management of his injury, working morning and evening – without that, he would not have been ready for this game,” coach Tito Vilanova told the media later on Sunday.

So Messi made the difference to all but wrap up La Liga, as Barca lead by 11 points with four rounds remaining and the Catalans could claim the title on Wednesday if Real Madrid fail to beat Malaga in a rearranged match due to the capital club’s participation in the Copa del Rey final later this month.

But while Tito talks up Barca’s management of Messi’s injury, fans will wonder why the forward featured for 90 minutes in Munich when clearly well below full fitness, then appeared as a substitute at Athletic Bilbao last weekend only to sit out the entire second leg of the club’s Champions League semi-final against the German team on Wednesday.

Vilanova had been planning to introduce Messi on Wednesday if his side had managed to score a couple of goals against Bayern (after losing the first leg 4-0), yet with their star man on the sidelines, the Catalans effectively surrendered the tie. In fact, many socios stayed at home upon hearing that the Argentine had been left out of the starting line-up. The 7-0 aggregate defeats tells a torrid tale of Barca’s defence versus Bayern – but also of how much they missed Messi (unfit at the Allianz Arena and absent altogether in the second match).

Better management could have seen the player steer clear of injury in the first place. Had he been rested after playing at altitude for Argentina in Bolivia, the Argentine may never have been hurt at all in the Champions League last-16 tie at Paris Saint-German. So Barca fans will soon have La Liga to celebrate, but will wonder what may have been in Europe with a fully fit Leo in their team. The coaching staff, meanwhile, must manage their finest footballer with the utmost care next season and also look for viable alternatives when he is unable to play. Because on Sunday’s showing, they depend on him as much or perhaps even more than ever before.

Bonucci: Juventus have dominated Serie A

The Italy international was delighted with his side’s domestic success and believes they were the outstanding team in Serie A this season.

277611hp2

Leonardo Bonucci has claimed Juventus fully deserve their Serie A success as they have dominated the Italian top flight this season.

The Turin powerhouse beat Palermo 1-0 on Sunday to clinch their second consecutive Serie A title with three games to spare, and Bonucci was over the moon with his side’s success.

“We’ve dominated from start to finish and shown ourselves to be a united and tight-knit group that fights together for a single objective,” Bonucci told the official Juventus website.

“It’s been demonstrated in recent matches when – even against top-level teams – we’ve been able to pick up crucial points. And now we’ve won the Scudetto with three games remaining.

“I felt more pressure in some matches last year, but that’s all part of football. In any case, winning in this way means that everyone has improved.”

Juventus hold an unassailable 11-point lead over second-placed Napoli with three rounds of matches to play.
