The Brazilians had moved to the brink of qualification after defeating Paraguay 3-0 in Sao Paulo earlier Tuesday.

But Uruguay’s surprise loss in Lima and results elsewhere mean Brazil are guaranteed one of the four automatic qualifying berths from South America.

Manchester City fined £35,000 over Liverpool protest

Manchester City have been fined £35,000 (US$44,000) by the Football Association for failing to control their players against Liverpool earlier this month.

City pleaded guilty to a misconduct charge last week after several players were seen protesting against the award of a penalty to Liverpool in a Premier League match at Eastlands on Mar 19.

They continued to complain even after James Milner had scored from the spot to give visitors Liverpool the lead in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

“Following an independent regulatory commission hearing, Manchester City have been fined £35,000 after the club admitted an FA misconduct charge,” said a statement issued by the FA, English football’s governing body, on Monday.

“City breached FA Rule E20(a) in that in or around the 50th minute of the game against Liverpool on 19 March 2017, the club failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.”

AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers: Vietnam to draw Afghanistan 1-1

Hassan Amin’s unstoppable strike five minutes after Nguyen Van Toan’s second half opener for Vietnam earned Afghanistan a 1-1 draw in Tuesday’s hard-fought 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying opener.

Van Toan struck four minutes after the hour mark at the Republican Central Stadium as the striker followed up to head home from close range after Afghanistan goalkeeper Ovays Azizi had spectacularly saved a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

But Afghanistan did not have to wait long to draw level as Amin unleashed a perfectly struck first-time strike from just outside the penalty area which gave the Vietnam goalkeeper no chance.

Vietnam enjoyed the better of the early exchanges as Vu Minh Tuan wasted an early opportunity, with Afghanistan struggling to find a foothold in the game.

They did manage to keep Vietnam at bay until the end of the first half as Ding Thang Trung’s effort was saved by Afghanistan goalkeeper Azizi.

Vietnam continued to dominate at the start of the second half and deservedly took the lead after 64 minutes as Nguyen Van Quyet’s free-kick was parried by a diving Azizi, but the ball was diverted back into the centre of the goal and Van Toan was the quickest to react to head the ball into the unguarded net.

But despite having struggled to create any chances of note, Afghanistan were back on level terms inside five minutes as Amin rifled home.

That set up a tense finish, but despite the best efforts of both sides, neither was able to find a breakthrough in the closing stages.

England, Germany stay on course for Russia

England and defending champions Germany remained on course for the 2018 World Cup finals on Sunday (Mar 26) while Danny Blind was fighting to survive as Dutch coach after his team faced missing a second major finals.

At Wembley, Jermain Defoe marked his international comeback with a goal as England toiled to a 2-0 victory over Lithuania.

Defoe, 34, who was making his first England appearance since November 2013, hit the target midway through the second half for his 20th international goal.

Substitute Jamie Vardy added a second as England tightened their grip on first place in Group F.

Gareth Southgate’s side are now the last team in European qualifying yet to have conceded a goal.

England have 13 points, five ahead of Slovenia who face Scotland in Glasgow later Sunday.

“We’d have liked a bit more, but I think really only one team came to win the game and it’s always difficult to break down a packed defence,” said Southgate. “I’m pleased for the two lads who have got the goals – a great story for Jermain and I felt Jamie added something to us.”

Germany maintained their 100 per cent record with a 4-1 win over Azerbaijan in Baku as they moved to 15 points in Group C.

The world champions and Switzerland are the only two teams in Europe who still have perfect records.

A brace from Andre Schuerrle and goals from Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez saw Germany take their unbeaten away run in World Cup qualifying to 44 games.

Azerbaijan midfielder Dimitrij Nazarov, who plays in Germany, had netted an early equaliser to the delight of the home crowd before Joachim Loew’s team stepped on the accelerator.

“It does me good to score goals, but it’s up to me to take my performances back to Germany and repeat them for Dortmund,” said Schuerrle.

At Serraville, the Czech Republic trounced San Marino 6-0 to move in to second place in Group C, seven points behind Germany.

The Czechs had already beaten San Marino 7-0 on two previous occasions and they were on their way to another rout on Sunday by leading 5-0 at the break with four goals coming in a devastating eight-minute spell.

Antonin Barak scored in the 17th and 24th minutes, sandwiching a Vladimir Darida strike.

Full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie added the fourth after 25 minutes before Michal Krmencik made it 5-0 just before the interval.

Darida hit the post twice in the closing moments of the first period but the Hertha Berlin midfielder was back on the scoresheet with a penalty after 77 minutes to make it 6-0.

Northern Ireland can reclaim second place later Sunday if they defeat Norway in Belfast.

Group E leaders Poland can extend their lead with victory over Montenegro in Podgorica while, in Cluj, Romania host Denmark.

In the same pool, Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan was on target in Armenia’s 2-0 win over Kazakhstan to keep up their hopes of taking the runners-up place.

Meanwhile, the Dutch football federation summoned Danny Blind for talks following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Bulgaria that left hopes of reaching the World Cup hanging by a thread.

“During an evening in which literally nothing went right, the Netherlands team lost 2-0 to Bulgaria” on Saturday, the federation said in a statement. “It was a painful defeat in Sofia, during which the chances of the Netherlands qualifying for the World Cup diminished.”

Following the defeat the team dropped to fourth place in Group A from which only the group winners are guaranteed to qualify for the finals in Russia next year.

Việt Nam take on Afghanistan in Asian Cup qualifier

Vietnamese coach Nguyễn Hữu Thắng yesterday affirmed his team would put in all efforts to win their first match at the 2019 Asian Cup’s last qualifier.

HLV Nguyễn Hữu Thắng (trái) khẳng định đội tuyển Việt Nam sẽ nỗ lực tối đa trước Afghanistan

Thắng was speaking at a press conference prior to the match against Afghanistan in Group C, which will be organised on the neutral stadium of Republican Central in Dushanbe City, Tajikistan, tonight.

“We cannot afford to look down on Afghanistan, who are being coached by German Otto Pfister. He has grabbed remarkable results in his career. Under his reign, teams such as Saudi Arabia earned a berth in the World Cup finals. I myself believe that they are currently a strong team,” said Thắng.

The Vietnamese coach highlighted the strong physique and short ball playing style of the Afghanistan players. They have seven players competing in German leagues, but Việt Nam still has a chance to win.

“Việt Nam are in the process of rejuvenating themselves. Some of their key players have left. My young players were affected by a 30-hour flight to arrive in Dushanbe, but we will do our best for a win tomorrow,” said Thắng.

Captain Đinh Thanh Trung also took part in the conference yesterday.

The midfielder said it was the first time that Việt Nam would play Afghanistan, a strong team. Both sides have a an equal 50-50 chance of winning. He hoped that Vietnamese players could bring into play all their strong points to get the upper hand in the game.

Thắng and his players had nearly three days to get familiar with the artificial grass at the Republican Central stadium.

It is said to be an objective challenge for the Vietnamese team, as most of their players have not competed on artificial grass before.

The last time they played on such a surface was at the Southeast Asian Games in 2015 in Singapore. However, only seven players from that team will be playing in this match.

“It is artificial, but it is not very different from real grass. I think our players will be able to adjust to it. It is not a huge problem for us,” said Thắng nói.

When assked how Việt Nam would handle pressure from Tajikistan fans who would be cheering Afghanistan, their neighbours, Thắng said pressure from the stands was normal in football, and his players were used to such situations.

When asked to share his opinion in case of a loss to Afghanistan, he said it would bring many difficulties to Việt Nam, as their next rivals were the group’s strongest team Jordan, who are expected to book their berth in the Cup’s final.

Thắng said: “Jordan are the strongest team in Group C. However, in that match, we will be playing on home turf, which is a great advantage. I still believe that Việt Nam, Jordan and Afghanistan are vying for the top place. It is difficult to guess anything in football. Cambodia have showed that they have improved, and they may spring a surprise,” Thắng said.

Buffon reaches 1,000 as Italy and Spain cruise

Italy kept pace with Spain in European World Cup qualifying as goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon played his 1,000th professional match in a 2-0 victory over Albania on Friday.

A first-half Daniele De Rossi penalty and late second from Ciro Immobile was enough to earn the Azzurri three points but they remain behind Spain on goal difference at the top of Group G after La Rioja downed Israel 4-1.

Manchester City forward David Silva and Chelsea’s Diego Costa were on the scoresheet alongside Vitolo and Isco, while Lior Refaelov netted Israel’s consolation.

In Palermo it was a day for Buffon to savour as he won a European record 168th cap and helped Italy extend their unbeaten run in qualifiers to 55 matches (41 wins, 14 draws).

De Rossi converted the spot-kick on 12 minutes after Migjen Basha, one of six Albanians plying his club trade in Italy, brought down Andrea Belotti.

Albanian fans threw flares onto the pitch in disgust and when they did so again just before the hour mark, the game was suspended for five minutes.

Immobile made the game safe 10 minutes from time by heading home a Davide Zappacosta cross. “At the start, there was too much tension, we tried to do too much and missed some fluidity,” said Italy coach Giampiero Ventura. “But we were never in danger.”

Spain had their game wrapped up by half-time in Gijon as Silva drove home a pass from Jordi Alba before Vitolo’s shot in first half injury time squirmed under Israel goalkeeper Ofir Marciano.

Diego Costa headed home a Thiago Alcantara corner on 51 minutes.

Refaelov gave the visitors something to cheer with a left-foot effort on 76 minutes, just moments after Rami Gershon had struck the post with a header. But Iago Aspas teed up Isco to put the gloss on a comfortable win two minutes from time.

Defeat saw Israel slip four points behind the two Group G heavyweights with five games left to play and only the pool winners guaranteed a place at Russia 2018.

“I am very happy with my goal, but the victory is the most important thing,” said Silva. “We needed to win to stay ahead of the rest.”

In the other group game, Macedonia got their first points of the qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win at Liechtenstein, who remain pointless.

HORRIFIC INJURY

Captain Seamus Coleman suffered a broken leg as the Republic of Ireland and Wales drew 0-0 in Dublin in Group D.

Neil Taylor was shown a straight red card for the scything challenge that left Irish defender Coleman clutching his shattered lower leg and screaming in pain as Shane Long tried to comfort him.

“It’s been confirmed by our doctor that he’s broken his leg,” said Ireland boss Martin O’Neill. “It’s a big, big loss.”

It was a costly game for Wales who saw their captain Gareth Bale booked for a high boot on John O’Shea meaning he, like Taylor, will miss the next qualifier away to Serbia in June.

Serbia moved top of the group after coming from behind to win 3-1 in Georgia.

Nika Kacharava gave the hosts a fifth minute lead but Dusan Tadic equalised from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

Aleksandar Mitrovic gave Serbia the lead before Mijat Gacinovic sealed the victory late on.

Serbia now lead the Republic on goal difference with Wales and Austria, 2-0 winners over Moldova, four points behind.

Croatia went three points clear at the top of Group I with a 1-0 victory over Ukraine courtesy of Nikola Kalinic’s goal seven minutes from half-time.

Iceland moved up to second with a 2-1 win at Kosovo, whose wait for a first competitive victory goes on.

Bjorn Sigurdarson gave the visitors a 25th minute lead before Gylfi Sigurdsson doubled the advantage from the spot 10 minutes later after Benjamin Kololli had brought down Birkir Saevarsson.

But seven minutes into the second period Atdhe Nuhiu headed home a Herolind Shala corner to give Kosovo a lifeline – although it wasn’t enough.

A brace from Cenk Tosun kept Turkey’s qualifying hopes alive as they beat Finland 2-0 to stay fourth, five points off Croatia.

UEFA boss vows transfer system reform

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin vowed on Wednesday (Mar 22) to reform the transfer system to stem the talent flow towards the richest clubs.

afp_uefa_boss

“We’ll develop something akin to tax on luxury goods or limits on squad size,” Ceferin said on the sidelines of a UEFA congress in Portugal.

“This would be done to stop one or two clubs gathering all the best players to their team,” he added. “We cannot allow the size of a few clubs to drown out the smaller ones.”

In a January report UEFA said there had been a dramatic shift of talent and finance towards richer clubs over the past six years.

Figures in that report said the top 15 clubs in Europe had seen their financial turnover increase 148 percent in that time while for the other 700 clubs this increase had been just 17 percent.

Ceferin has also vowed that there will be no European super league formed under his watch.

The UEFA chief added that football officials should not be afraid to embrace technology and that lessons can be learned from big business.

“We should approach Silicon Valley and understand the strategies of the big technology innovation companies,” he said.

“We cannot live in fear of them, or fail to understand them because we ourselves do not. They must be our ally, because they are already our children’s ally.”

“UEFA has the greatest football on earth – and why not allow everyone to maximise their experience and taste of it? We can bring our fans into the game.”

The proposed reforms over good governance will be voted upon by Europe’s national associations at next month’s UEFA Congress in Helsinki.

Podolski hits Germany’s winner against England in friendly match

Lukas Podolski signed off his Germany career in style on Wednesday (Mar 22) smashing home the winning goal with his trusty left boot to seal a 1-0 friendly victory over England.

It was only fitting that the Galatasaray forward, who joins Japan’s Vissel Kobe next season, should claim his 49th goal on his 130th – and final – international appearance.

“It was like in a movie, dear god gave me a strong left foot and I used it tonight,” beamed Podolski. “It was a great game, a great result and a great way to say goodbye.”

Podolski captained the world champions to their first win over old rivals England on home soil since 1987.

The 31-year-old received a standing ovation in Dortmund after a pre-match presentation to mark his 13-year international career.

After his winning goal lit up an otherwise dull friendly on 69 minutes, Podolski came off to more thunderous applause with six minutes to go.

“That gave me goosebumps to get a reception like that,” added Podolski.

Before kick-off England manager Gareth Southgate paid tribute to the victims of Wednesday’s London “terror” attack and said there was no question of cancelling the match.

Southgate, who took the brave decision to drop Manchester United star Wayne Rooney from his squad, fielded a new-look side who had the better of the Germans in the first half.

West Bromwich Albion’s Jake Livermore came in for injured Jordan Henderson while Leicester’s Jamie Vardy took Harry Kane’s place up front.

Gary Cahill captained the team as part of a back three while James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Michael Keane all made their debuts for the visitors.

Germany coach Joachim Loew also experimented by starting just three 2014 World Cup winners in Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels and Podolski.

A fourth, Sami Khedira, dropped out hours before kick-off with a swollen ankle.

Striker Timo Werner, 21, earned his Germany debut after scoring 14 goals for RB Leipzig this season.

Keane fired over in the early stages as England made a bright start and Adam Lallana’s powerful shot hit the post with 30 minutes gone.

Podolski fired over Germany’s best first-half chance after being set up by Manchester City’s Leroy Sane.

With half-time approaching Dele Alli forced Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a reflex save as it stayed goalless at the break.

Germany took control at the start of the second half with winger Julian Brandt firing wide.

Podolski tested England goalkeeper Joe Hart, while Eric Dier forced ter Stegen, in for injured Manuel Neuer, into a diving save on 52 minutes.

But Podolski steered the friendly Germany’s way with the superb winner on 69 minutes.

A Kroos pass found replacement Andre Schuerrle, who laid the ball off for Podolski, whose bullet shot off his left foot gave Hart no chance from 25 metres out.

The goal breathed life into the hosts and only a good save denied Sane after a storming run into the area and the City midfielder had another late chance.

Both teams have important World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

The teams are top of their respective groups for the matches on the road to Russia 2018 when England host Lithuania and Germany are away to Azerbaijan.

International friendly results:

At Usti-nad-Labam, Czech Republic
Czech Republic 3 Lithuania 0

At Nicosia
Cyprus 3 Kazakhstan 1

At Dortmund
Germany 1 England 0

At Edinburgh
Scotland 1 Canada 1

Jose Mourinho’s side, currently fifth in the Premier League, will play in five American cities including Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Santa Clara and Washington DC.

Dates and opponents for the matches have not been announced, but some of the games are likely to form part of the International Champions Cup friendly tournament.

“Visiting North America will give the team the best possible preparation for the new season, using top-class training facilities and playing in some great stadiums,” said United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in a press release.

“We have witnessed first-hand the passion and support for the club in the US in recent years, so naturally it is something that everybody is very much looking forward to this summer.”

Reports suggest Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus could also feature in the International Champions Cup.

City recently revealed they will also tour the United States prior to the 2017-18 season, but no further details have been announced.
