Infantino pledges new era after winning FIFA vote

Gianni Infantino on Friday won FIFA’s presidential election and vowed to lead the scandal-tainted body into a new era as he faced immediate calls to ensure genuine reform.

The 45-year-old UEFA general secretary scored a convincing victory in the battle to replace the disgraced Sepp Blatter, whose 18-year reign ended with FIFA mired in unprecedented crisis.

Infantino, a Swiss-Italian, defeated Asian rival Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa in the second round of the vote of 207 members.

“FIFA has gone through sad times, moments of crisis, but those times are over,” he said, asserting that a “new era” had begun for world’s football’s governing body, dogged by a vast set of corruption scandals.

Blatter, who many hold responsible for the culture of patronage and graft that plagued FIFA, congratulated Infantino on his win.

“With his experience, his capacities, his sense of strategy and diplomacy, he has all the qualities to continue my work,” Blatter said in a statement.

SECOND ROUND WIN

Infantino got 115 votes in the election’s second round while Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman, from Bahrain, got 88. They were just three votes apart in the first round.

Five candidates started the day in contention.

Prince Ali bin al Hussein of Jordan and former FIFA official Jerome Champagne saw their support fizzle after the first round, while South African tycoon Tokyo Sexwale withdrew before polling opened.

Infantino said he would have no trouble uniting world football after an election which exposed divides between Europe, Infantino’s power base, and voters in Asia and Africa.

“Today it was an election but not a war,” the new FIFA supremo told reporters. “In an election you win or lose and then life goes on.”

Sheikh Salman said he was looking forward to working with his campaign rival, and called for “unity” while stressing that FIFA needed to be more “inclusive and reflect the diversity of world football”.

Infantino’s election was hailed by world figures such as Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and federation chiefs. Putin, whose country will host the 2018 World Cup, said Infantino comes into the post with “high authority”.

PRESSURE TO CHANGE

The multilingual lawyer takes over leadership of the world’s top sport with its reputation at an all-time low.

Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini have been banned from football for six years, US prosecutors have charged 39 people over more than US$200 million in football business bribes and Swiss authorities are investigating FIFA’s management and the awarding of hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Infantino, who only entered the contest after Platini was ruled out, will also face immediate financial problems.

Acting secretary-general Markus Kattner said “general uncertainty” caused by the crisis meant FIFA was US$550 million (€500 million) behind in its US$5 billion budget target for 2015-2018.

The shortfall could complicate Infantino’s ability to deliver on a campaign pledge of more than doubling the amount given back to national associations to over US$1.2 billion in total every four years.

Hours before he was elected, FIFA members approved a reform package that aims to limit the powers of the new president and to end the corruption that prevailed under Blatter.

The president will become more like a corporate chairman of the board, providing strategic guidance but with less management authority.

FIFA’s executive committee, which had become an epicentre of graft allegations, has been rebranded as a FIFA council. It will operate like a corporate board of directors.

Measures such as declaring the salary of the new president to improve financial transparency were also included. But sponsors gave a cool reaction to the measures.

“We urge FIFA’s new leadership to prioritise their implementation,” major backer Visa said of the reforms. “As we have said before, we believe it is in the best interests of FIFA, the fans, sponsors and everyone involved, that there is long-term independent oversight of the reforms.”

Atlanta-based FIFA backers Coca-Cola said in a statement that deeds, not words, regarding accountability will be the critical factor in judging future support of Infantino’s FIFA. “Under Mr Infantino’s leadership, FIFA must regenerate itself,” it said.

END OF AN ERA?

FIFA still has doubters and considerable judicial troubles ahead, particularly from the US investigation with trials that could start this year.

Blatter, 79, the big absentee at the congress, suffered a spectacular fall over the last nine months. He has since been banned from football for six years for ethics breaches and could face criminal charges.

Infantino also faced questions over his UEFA ties to Platini, but offered thanks for the French football legend’s years of support. He also pledged to work “tirelessly” to drag the organisation out of one of the darkest period’s in its 112-year history.

“You will be proud of FIFA,” he said. “You will be proud of what FIFA will do for football.”

Messi sends autographed jerseys to little Afghan fan

Argentine football star Lionel Messi has sent not one, but two jerseys to the five-year-old Afghan boy who became an Internet sensation last month when he was pictured wearing a plastic bag with “Messi” scrawled on it in marker pen.

Murtaza Ahmadi travelled with his family from eastern Ghazni province to Kabul to receive the gifts sent by Messi through UNICEF, where he is a goodwill ambassador.

“Murtaza couldn’t stop smiling. He kept repeating: I love Messi,” UNICEF Afghanistan spokesman Denise Shepherd-Johnson told AFP.

Messi autographed the jerseys, writing “With much love” in Spanish on them, and added a football to the treasure trove, UNICEF said.

Purchasing a Messi jersey was beyond the means of Murtaza’s poor family, members of the persecuted ethnic Hazara minority living in volatile Ghazni, near Kabul.

His elder brother Homayoun, 15, improvised the blue-and-white-striped plastic shirt with Messi’s name scrawled in black marker, and posted the photos of Murtaza wearing it on Facebook in mid-January.

The image touched a chord with football fans around the world, and earned Murtaza the sobriquet “little Messi” on social media.

The Afghan Football Federation had said Messi was in contact with them to arrange a meeting with Murtaza as soon as possible, with the Spanish embassy in Kabul telling AFP it would do whatever possible to facilitate.

But a source close to Messi’s entourage said earlier this month they could neither confirm nor deny the speculation regarding a possible meeting.

Setting up a meeting in Afghanistan, in the grip of a fierce Taliban insurgency, is fraught with security challenges.

Football and cricket are the two most popular sports in the war-ravaged country — but sports were rarely played under Taliban rule, and the football stadium in Kabul was a notorious venue for executions, stonings and mutilations.

A VFF source told Thanh Nien that they have submitted an application to the AFF to host the event, scheduled from November 19 to December 17 this year.
On February 24 the AFF announced that the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) had to withdraw due to contractual problems.
“The AFF would like to clarify that despite the PFF’s best efforts, the PFF were unable to deliver the contract with the stadium which was to host the prestigious tournament. The PFF were given two extensions to try and negotiate with the stadium to secure the contract.
“Without the contract, the PFF had no option but to withdraw as hosts. The contract between the host Football Association and the stadium is one of the main criteria that is stipulated in the Hosting Obligations.”
A decision on a replacement will be made by the AFF Council at its next meeting on March 12 in Da Nang, Vietnam.
Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam have all expressed interest, FourFourTwo football newspaper reported.

Police foil bid to blackmail Bayern Munich

A former German bank robber has been charged with blackmail for allegedly trying to extort millions in cash and diamonds from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich with bomb threats, police said on Tuesday (Feb 23).

a-view-of-the-stadium-in

The German league leaders received two letters on Feb 9 and Feb 15 containing vague threats, involving bombs and drones, and reported demands for €1 million (US$1.1 million) in cash and €2 million worth of diamonds.

Munich police on Monday arrested a 63-year-old man, saying he is a notorious former bank robber who was sentenced to over 13 years in jail in 1999 on 17 counts of bank robbery and freed on parole in 2009.

Known in the Munich region as the “broomstick robber” during the 1990s, the man was known to hold hostages and lock bank doors with a broomstick before escaping with the money, netting millions in his string of robberies. The suspect appeared before a judge on Tuesday, police said.

Augsburg now missing seven players for Liverpool trip

Augsburg have been dealt another injury blow ahead of Thursday’s Europa League, round of 32, second-leg tie at Liverpool with midfielder Markus Feulner the seventh player sidelined.

augsburg-s-midfielder

The 34-year-old suffered a broken cheekbone in Sunday’s 1-0 Bundesliga win over bottom side Hanover.

He is due for an operation on Wednesday and will miss Augsburg’s crunch clash at Anfield the following day after the first leg against Liverpool finished goalless in Bavaria.

“It’s bitter news that I won’t be able to play in Liverpool or in the coming weeks,” said Feulner.

Augsburg were already missing playmaker Daniel Baier, who has a fractured ankle, and burly striker Raul Bobadilla, who tore a hamstring in the first leg.

As he prepares to face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Augsburg boss Markus Weinzierl also has two of his centre-backs, in South Korean Hong Jeong-Ho and Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker, sidelined.

Former Germany winger Piotr Trochowski and Czech midfielder Jan Moravek are also out with injury.

10-man PSV hold on for Atletico stalemate

PSV Eindhoven held out with 10 men to leave their Champions League last 16 tie with Atletico Madrid finely balanced at 0-0 after the first-leg on Wednesday (Feb 24).

atletico-madrid

Atletico had the chances to kill the game before half-time as Luciano Vietto and Antoine Griezmann missed one-on-ones with Jeroen Zoet. The hosts had to resist for the final 20 minutes a man light when Gaston Pereira saw red for a second bookable offence.

However, Atletico failed to take advantage meaning all is to play for when the sides meet again on Mar 15 at the Vicente Calderon for a place in the last eight.

“From the start of the game we pressed them, played in their half and created chances,” Atletico boss Diego Simeone told beIN Sports. “In the second half we controlled the game and (Jan) Oblak didn’t have a save to make, so I am very happy with the team.”

And despite his side’s struggles to score goals of late, Simeone is confident their excellent home record in Europe will see Atletico into the quarter-finals for a third consecutive year. “I don’t like to lie and I speak honestly. Playing at home (to decide the tie), how can I not be calm?”

Vietto was handed a start ahead of Fernando Torres as Griezmann’s strike partner and should have opened the scoring after just three minutes.

Gabi’s long ball through the middle caught the PSV defence flat-footed and the Argentine lifted the ball over the advancing Zoet, but Jeffrey Bruma got back just in time to clear the ball off the line.

PSV had seen off Manchester United in the group stages to reach the last-16 for the first time in nine years and showed signs they could produce another upset during the first-half.

The home fans and coach Phillip Cocu were furious when Jurgen Locadia went down under Gabi’s challenge inside the area, but referee Daniele Orasato was unmoved.

Yet, Atletico were constantly finding space in behind the Dutch champions defence and Koke was next to have a go at chipping the ball over Zoet but didn’t get enough on his effort to beat the ‘keeper.

Griezmann then had the best chance of the game when he raced onto Koke’s through ball to beat the offside trap, but Zoet rushed from his line to make a vital save.

PSV could even have been in front before half-time when Davy Propper shot straight at Jan Oblak from close range after great work by Pereiro.

Chances were harder to come by in the second period as neither side ran the risk of conceding the winner.

Diego Godin did have the ball in the net just after the hour mark, but his header from Koke’s corner was rightly ruled out for a foul on Hector Moreno.

PSV were then forced to try and see out the final 20 minutes when Pereiro picked up an unnecessary second booking for a flying elbow on Godin.

Torres had been introduced just before the dismissal for Vietto in the search for an away goal, but he wasted Atletico’s best chance against the 10 men as he blazed well over from Juanfran’s intelligent cut-back.
