Hanoi fans were not impressed with the 5-0 final score in favour of Pleiku city, after the match saw few developments in the first 70 minutes of play.

A surprise came in the last 20 minutes, when the visiting side suddenly scored five consecutive goals.

Van Thanh put the visitors ahead with his opener in the 73rd minute. Four minutes later, it was Van Thanh again who doubled the scoring from Van Toan’s assist. Tran Vu widened the gap to 3-0 for Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the 83rd minute.

In the 85th minute, Van Toan’s one-touch pass facilitated Hong Duy to defeat goalkeeper Duc An in a one-on-one situation, scoring the fourth goal for Gia Lai, before Van Toan made it 5-0 in the 88th minute allowing Gia Lai to temporarily take the table lead after the first round.

* A surprise was also witnessed at Vinh Stadium on Sunday, as the match ended unexpectedly with the home team Song Lam Nghe An being defeated 0-2 to visitors Hai Phong; both goals were scored by Xuan Hung in just five minutes.

Three minutes into the match, Xuan Hung’s left-footed finish brought in the first goal for Hai Phong. Eighth minutes later, he scored once more from a free kick outside the 16m50 box, when the Song Lam Nghe An goalie in a failed attempt, delivered the ball to Xuan Hung which allowed him to easily net a second goal. Despite losing quite early on, the home team was unable to secure a goal.

* The same day, hosts Quang Ninh Coal only barely managed a goal in their 1-2 loss to Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN at Cam Pha Stadium, while Dong Tam Long An won Quang Nam 1-0.

* On Saturday, Thanh Hoa defeated V-League runner-up Hanoi T&T 3-0, defending Becamex Binh Duong crushed Can Tho 2-0, and Da Nang bested Dong Thap 2-1.

Who is behind the historic World Cup ticket of Vietnamese futsal?

The Vietnamese futsal squad have made their way to the FIFA Futsal World Cup, but such success does not have so much to do with the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) as it does with a businessman working painstakingly and quietly behind the team.

Vietnam have advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing AFC Futsal Championship in Uzbekistan, thus qualifying for the World Cup, to be held in Colombia from September 10 to October 1, as one of the five Asian representatives, according to FIFA rules.

The team shocked supporters at home and across the globe with a terrific win over Japan in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The VFF, Vietnam’s governing body of football, could not pride itself on the historic achievement of the national futsal team, as it has contributed almost nothing to developing the sport.

The success of the futsal team is in fact a sweet fruit businessman Tran Anh Tu could finally pick after nearly a decade spending time and money, as well as exerting effort to build a professional futsal team from amateur players.

Tu is chairman of the board of members of Thai Son Nam Trading Co. Ltd., a Ho Chi Minh City-based electric equipment distributor, and also head of the futsal division under the VFF. The company has a northern branch, called Thai Son Bac.

In 2007, he formed a futsal club for Thai Son Nam, and hired Pattaya Piamkum, former coach of the Thai futsal squad, to lead both the club and the Vietnamese team.

When the club and the national team had both improved and become more professional, Tu went on to invite better coaches to take the helm.

From 2010 to 2013, coach Sergio Gargelli led the team, but eventually failed to meet the target of making Vietnam one of the eight best futsal squads in Asia. Tu then parted company with the Italian, and signed Bruno Garcia Formoso .

Formoso, who was named Spain’s best futsal coach in the 2011-12 season, was tasked with leading the Vietnamese futsal team in the World Cup campaign, a mission he can now proudly say accomplished.

Besides inviting the best possible coaches, Tu also invested heavily in overseas training trips for his players.

Vietnam have 14 players at the AFC Futsal Championship in Uzbekistan, nine of whom are members of Thai Son Nam and two from Thai Son Bac.

Tu’s love and effort for futsal has paid off, as Vietnam made history in Uzbekistan earlier this week after the Japan victory.

The commentator of FOX Sports once said the result was “incredible,” while FIFA called the match “the most dramatic quarterfinal of the day.”

On Thursday, Colin Smith, FIFA director of competitors, even sent a congratulatory letter to the VFF to welcome Vietnam to the World Cup.

“Yesterday was a historic moment for the nation’s futsal team securing its first ever qualification for a FIFA Futsal World Cup,” reads the letter, addressed to VFF general secretary Le Hong Anh.

Smith also sent FIFA’s congratulations to coach Formoso for leading the team to the historic achievement.

Vietnam will face Iran in the second semifinal at 9:00 pm (Vietnam time) on Friday, whereas the Uzbeks are scheduled to play Thailand in the first match at 4:00 pm.

Coach Formoso has underlined that Iran are an Asian futsal power and the Vietnamese team should not lose their focus on the rest of their journey in Uzbekistan.

Advantage Barcelona as Real Madrid, Atletico held

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty as Real Madrid’s hopes of catching La Liga leaders Barcelona were all but ended with a 1-1 draw at Malaga on Sunday.

real-madrid-s-forward

Madrid remain nine points behind Barca with 13 games to go after Raul Albentosa cancelled out Ronaldo’s opener.

Atletico Madrid also failed to gain significant ground on Barca as they were held 0-0 at home by Villarreal to move eight points behind in second.

However, Gary Neville’s upturn in fortunes as Valencia boss continued with a third win in a week, 2-1 at Granada.

Zinedine Zidane’s men were left to rue Ronaldo’s miss from the spot to make it 2-0 before the break when Carlos Kameni dived to his left to parry the three-time World Player of the Year’s effort.

“It is obviously going to be difficult because we have dropped two points, but we won’t give up,” said Zidane. “There are 39 points still to play for. You think the league is lost, but the players and myself don’t believe that.”

Madrid were without the injured Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale, while James Rodriguez was left on the bench by Zidane. The visitors were lucky to go in front as Ronaldo headed home Toni Kroos’s free-kick despite clearly standing in an offside position.

There was no doubt about the penalty award two minutes later, though, when Ronaldo was brought down by Weligton. Yet, despite being normally lethal from the spot, the Portuguese was denied by a fine low save by Kameni.

Malaga missed a great chance to level before the break as Jesus Navas parried Duje Cop’s shot into the air and Sergio Ramos got back to clear the looping ball off the line.

And Navas then made an incredible stop just after the restart when Nacho turned Juanpi’s cross towards his own goal.

Yet, the Madrid stopper was finally beaten when Malaga’s two centre-backs combined for the equaliser as Weligton’s low cross was coolly slotted home at the back post by Albentosa.

DEFENCES ON TOP

Chances were far harder to come by at the Vicente Calderon as the two best defences in the league stood firm.

Atletico’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann headed Juanfran’s inch-perfect cross just wide before Angel Correa’s audacious chipped effort forced Villarreal goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into his only serious save after half-time.

And Villarreal could have snatched all three points on the break when Cedric Bakambu blazed over with just Jan Oblak to beat.

Elsewhere, Neville’s Valencia again rode their luck, but recorded back-to-back league wins for just the second time this season as Granada passed up a wave of second-half opportunities.

With confidence high from their 6-0 thrashing of Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday, Valencia started the stronger and only great saves from Andres Fernandez prevented Paco Alcacer and Andres Gomez from giving Valencia a half-time lead.

Dani Parejo eventually opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break when he swept home Alcacer’s knockdown. However, Granada should have levelled in the final half hour as David Barral hit the bar and Youssef El-Arabi fired off target from close range.

Santi Mina sealed the points for Valencia on the counter-attack before Edgar Mendes pulled a goal back in stoppage time.

“I think at the moment we need to win all our games to keep the momentum going,” said Neville. “The dressing room changed significantly in the last week in terms of mood as when you win there is a stronger belief.”

Sevilla remain eight points off Villarreal in the battle for the final Champions League place as they blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Rayo Vallecano.

Real Sociedad’s surge up the table continued as Jonathas’s brilliant strike handed them a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Basque derby to move into the top half.

2016 V-League kicks off with violence, one-sided matches

Quang Ninh lost 1-2 to Sanna Khanh Hoa in a match marred by violence while two capital-based clubs, Hanoi and Hanoi T&T, were both crushed in the first round of the V-League during the weekend.

anh_chinh_QJCJ
Quang Ninh and Sanna Khanh Hoa, ranked fourth and fifth last season, were expected to offer interesting fare at Cam Pha Stadium, especially after the former, the host, had signed up seven young players from the Vietnam Professional Football Academy last November.
Khanh Hoa went ahead in the 23rd minute through a free kick by Nigerian striker Iheruome Uche who played for Quang Ninh last season.
Quang Ninh lost their temper in the 63rd minute after Cao Van Trien scored a second goal, and began to repeatedly foul.
Referee Tran Xuan Nguyen issued five yellow cards to Quang Ninh, including two to Thanh Hien, and three to Khanh Hoa.
But he was later criticized for poor decision-making on several occasions by ignoring Van Khoa’s petulant behaviour in pushing him, and issuing only a yellow card against him for throwing elbows at a Khanh Hoa player.
Quang Ninh coach Pham Nhu Thuan, who said his players had missed many opportunities to score a goal, remained optimistic.
“New Russian midfielder Rodion Dyachenko needs more time,” he said.
Bad day for Hanoi teams
At Hang Day Stadium, host Hanoi lost 0-5 to Hoang Anh Gia Lai on their V-League debut.
The latter were without Cong Phuong and Tuan Anh, who have gone to play in Japan’s J-League 2, and Xuan Truong, who now plays for Incheon Club in Korea.
But they scored five times, all in the last 15 minutes, through Van Thanh, who got a brace, and Tran Vu, Hong Duy, and Van Toan.
“My family came to the stadium to cheer me. It was important to score two goals and I want to dedicate them to my parents and girlfriend,” Thanh said.
At Thanh Hoa Stadium, Thanh Hoa had an easy 3-0 win over Hanoi T&T with a double by Senegalese striker Pape Qmar Faye in the 2nd and 71st minutes sandwiching one by Dinh Tung in the 39th minute.

Không vượt qua Thái Lan, Việt Nam bở lỡ cơ hội giành HCĐ Châu lục

Jetsada Chudech opened the scoring in the fifth minute for Thailand, who has taken part in the World Cup for five consecutive years.

Five minutes later, Apiwat Chaemcharoen doubled the score for the Thai team.

Then in the 12th minute Jetsada Chudech raised the score to 3-0 for Thailand.

Before the first half closed, striker Suphawut Thueanklang continued the drubbing, scoring two more goals in the 17th and 18th minute.

And two additional goals from Suphawut and another from Jirawat Sornwichian in the second half completed the overwhelming victory.

Earlier, Vietnam beat Japan in the event’s quarter-finals to earn a ticket for the first time to the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The Vietnam team jumped two spots to 44th in the latest futsal world rankings on the back of their win over Japan.

Japan dropped from the 9th to 12th spot following both their losses to Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan.

Spain topped the futsal world rankings, while second and third places were occupied by Brazil and Russia, respectively.

Manchester Utd cruise into FA Cup quarter-finals

Manchester United cruised into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 win at Shrewsbury on Monday (Feb 22) that at least temporarily eased the mounting pressure on Louis van Gaal.

manchester-utd

Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard netted the goals as United wrapped up a businesslike victory against their third tier hosts to secure a last eight date with West Ham United at Old Trafford.

Following speculation that an embarrassing defeat would be fatal to Van Gaal’s hopes of avoiding the sack, the United manager was relieved to see his side easily navigate their way through a one-sided fifth round tie.

United, humbled by Sunderland and then FC Midtjylland in their last two matches, took 37 minutes to make the breakthrough, but once Smalling opened the scoring the result never looked in doubt.

“I was very pleased. We have played 70 minutes fantastic, in a professional way, creating chances and scoring goals,” Van Gaal told BT Sport. “Everyone shall say Manchester United have to win against Shrewsbury Town, but for the players it is fantastic because we are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.”

As expected, United dominated possession in the early stages and they should have led from a corner with just two minutes on the clock. Daley Blind’s delivery from the left found the head of Smalling, but the stand-in United captain misdirected his header and it spun over the crossbar.

Memphis Depay then tried two efforts of his own from the left of goal around 25 yards out, but both flew into the Shrewsbury fans to earn the visiting winger ironic cheers from the home crowd. Depay almost answered that ridicule with the opening goal on 11 minutes.

After collecting a pass from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Depay let fly with a low shot that Jayson Leutwiler did well to scramble away as he dived acrobatically to his left.

United made a hash of their next chance to test Leutwiler after Jermaine Grandison was penalised for a foul on Depay 20 yards from goal. The winger took the resulting free-kick himself but he struck it against the head of team-mate Anthony Martial and it looped harmlessly away.

Leutwiler then saved instinctively with his legs to deny Martial after a clever pass from Mata, with Abu Ogogo on hand to clear the rebound off his line as United players closed in.

GOOD TOUCH

Martial created an opening with some neat footwork, with his shot blocked by a sliding Grandison.

United’s pressure finally paid off with half-time approaching courtesy of Smalling. After Borthwick-Jackson had powered down the left, his cleared cross was headed back in by Morgan Schneiderlin and Smalling’s shot on the turn deflected in off Nathaniel Knight-Percival.

As Shrewsbury attempted to steady the ship, they conceded the second goal on the stroke of half-time. Zak Whitbread had tripped Martial and Mata curled the resulting free-kick over the Shrewsbury wall and into the net with Leutwiler rooted to the spot.

Early in the second half, Lingard produced a good touch to control a cross as he looked to extend United’s lead but Brown made a another important clearance for Shrewsbury.

United were still making all the running and Depay made another bid to get on the scoresheet when he cut inside and let fly with a shot that deflected behind for a corner.

Van Gaal’s men grabbed their third goal on 61 minutes when they counter-attacked with pace from a rare Shrewsbury break. Mata’s touch sent Ander Herrera away and his cross from the left was turned home by Lingard, who produced a smart, first-time finish.

Lingard missed a chance to add to his tally when he bundled a close-range shot wide as United continued to press. And substitute Will Keane then saw a decent snap-shot come back off the post.

United ended the game with 10 men when Keane was forced off with an injury after all three substitutes had been used.

Ogogo missed two chances for a Shrewsbury consolation late on. First he saw a poked shot cleared off the line by Joe Riley before he squandered a glorious opportunity in sending a free header wide.

Thai ball used at Vietnam soccer league over organizer-domestic sponsor dispute

A ball produced by a Thai firm has started to be used at the 2016 V-League 1, which kicked off on Saturday, as a result of disagreement between the organizer and a local sponsor.

Football players compete for the ball provided by a Thai sports brand during one of the opening games of the 2016 V-League 1 on February 20, 2016.

Football players compete for the ball provided by a Thai sports brand during one of the opening games of the 2016 V-League 1 on February 20, 2016.

The ball provided by Thailand’s Grand Sport was used in the opening games of the league, Vietnam’s top-flight football (soccer) tournament, instead of the one made by Vietnamese Dong Luc Group, which had been used in the past decade.
Dong Luc could not find a place for its ball UHV 2.07, which meets international standards, this season because of a dispute between the organizer, Vietnam Professional Football JSC (VPF), and the group, a VPF representative said.
Grand Sport and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) signed a five-year contract, according to which the Thai brand will provide equipment and clothing for the training and competing of Vietnam’s national football team, in November 2015, with Nike being the sponsor of the preceding five years.
In 2016, Grand Sport continues to shock the domestic sports industry by becoming the ball supplier for the V-League 1, the V-League 2, and the National Cup.
Its ball, called Primero One+, was used in previous seasons of Thailand’s football league but is replaced by a newer version, Primero Mundo 3, this season.
Primero Mundo 3 is not used at the 2016 V-League 1 because the contract between the VPF and Grand Sport was signed in an urgent manner, causing the Thai firm to be unable to provide a sufficient number of balls on time, Cao Van Chong, general director of the Vietnamese company, explained.
Le Van Thanh, board chairman of Dong Luc Group, expressed his surprise at the VPF’s decision while talking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday.
“I was upset to see that the ball of Dong Luc Group, which has been exported to many countries in the world, cannot be used in the most significant football championship of Vietnam,” Thanh said.
The disagreement arose as Dong Luc Group wanted to sign a three-year contract while the VPF preferred a two-year deal, the chairman continued.
It is a shame that the organizer of the 2016 V-League 1 ignored its partnership of over 10 years old with Dong Luc and opened its wallet to promote a foreign brand in Vietnam, he complained.
A VPF official told Tuoi Tre that it was difficult for the company to make this decision, adding that Dong Luc had failed to provide their products as per their contracts for many times.
“According to our agreement, Dong Luc had to supply the VPF with 3,500 balls per annum. But none of the balls were given to the company during the 2015 league, forcing us to use those left from the 2014 season,” the official said.
Despite the company’s efforts, its failure to reach a consensus with the sports brand resulted in the VPF turning to another sponsor to meet the schedule of the 2016 tournament, he elaborated.
“We cannot let the unprofessionalism of a business partner affect the whole league,” he asserted.
But chairman Thanh refuted what the VPF official said, underlining that the league’s organizer was the one who was “unprofessional.”
Dong Luc was ready to sign a new contract with the VPF, suggesting extending its duration to three years rather than two years as proposed by the organizer, he added.
“We then prepared to hand over 2,000 balls to the VPF but they never responded to our suggestion and suddenly signed a deal with another company. That’s unprofessional!” Thanh insisted.
The 2016 V-League 1 is scheduled for February 20 to September 18

Thua Iran, tuyển futsal VN tranh hạng ba với Thái Lan

The 10-time champions met no resistance in a 13-1 victory at the Uzbekistan Stadium, advancing to the final where they will play the hosts on February 21.
Farhad Tavakoli scored four times, Hossein Tayebi had a hattrick while Mohammad Keshavarz and Mahdi Javid made a double each for Iran. The two other goals went to Hamid Ahmadi and Alireza Vafaei.
Phung Trong Luan netted the only goal for the underdog side at the 16th minute when he slid in and sent the ball into the net.
The second half was no better for the Vietnamese. Almost of their attacks were blocked by the tall Iranian defenders. Their very rare chances were denied by goalie Sepehr Mohammadi and the goal posts.
Vietnam will play Thailand in the bronze-medal play-off match.
Vietnam earlier secured their places after advancing to the quarter-final stage of the biennial competition. The team will join Iran, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Australia who emerged as the fifth and final team to qualify for the World Cup after defeating Kyrgyzstan in the fifth-place play-off match.
The result is a historic achievement for Australia, Uzkekistan and Vietnam as they will be competing in their first-ever FIFA Futsal World Cup. The achievement is especially momentous for Vietnam, as it represents the Southeast Asian country’s first ever appearance at a FIFA final tournament of any kind.
Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa offered his congratulations to the five teams: “I would like to congratulate Australia, IR Iran, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam for their brilliant performances at the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship.
“Three out of the five Asian teams will be competing in the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the first time. The remarkable accomplishment of these three teams highlights the progress made in recent years in our continent,” he said on the-afc.com.
“The high-tempo, captivating matches and stunning goals at the AFC Futsal Championship exemplify the role futsal continues to have on player development. I am confident that the Asian teams will do us proud and we expect more riveting displays in Colombia.”
The eighth edition of the FIFA Futsal Word Cup will commence on September 10, with the final taking place on October 1.
