FIFA, scarred by scandal, looks at reforms

FIFA’s much-abused leadership on Wednesday (Dec 2) starts a key meeting on reform on the fifth anniversary of one of the most controversial actions ever taken by football’s world body.

fifa-president-joseph

The Dec 2, 2010 votes to award the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar set off a storm of corruption allegations that have still not been cleared up.

In the five years since, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has been suspended and is under criminal investigation in Switzerland. Michel Platini, once hot favourite to take over, is also suspended and faces a life ban from football. Sport’s most powerful federation is in chaos.

Only seven of the 24 member executive from the ill-fated 2010 vote remain on the team that will start to discuss proposals for change in Zurich on Wednesday and Thursday.

Many of the others, including Platini, are suspended, banned, under arrest or, like German legend Franz Beckenbauer, under investigation.

The executive is to discuss reforms such as age and term limits for FIFA presidents, how to vet the powerful continental confederation chiefs on the executive and make the world body more transparent.

A special FIFA congress on February 26 will choose a new president as well as vote on reforms drawn up by Francois Carrard, former director general of the International Olympic Committee.

Many critics – including remaining candidates for the FIFA presidency and top sponsors like Coca Cola and Visa – say that the world body has not learned enough of the lessons from the 2010 vote that still reverberates.

Qatar came from nowhere to win the 2022 World Cup after four rounds of voting – eliminating Australia, Japan and finally the United States.

FIFA IN FOOTBALL FURNACE

Russia beat England, Netherlands-Belgium and Spain-Portugal.

Protests came from far-and-wide. Even US President Barack Obama questioned the election.

Blatter at the time welcomed the move of the World Cup into new territories. But FIFA has paid dearly for the votes financially and in terms of its reputation.

With Qatar a football furnace in the summer, the World Cup will be played in the northern hemisphere winter (Nov 21 to Dec 18) for the first time in 2022.

Former Qatar football supremo Mohamed bin Hammam – one of the 24 executive members in 2010 – was accused of misconduct and has since been banned for life by FIFA.

Former US prosecutor Michael Garcia investigated the Russia and Qatar bids. But he has quit as FIFA’s corruption-buster saying a summary released by the world body had misrepresented his 430-page findings.

FIFA says it cannot release the full report straight away for legal reasons. The controversy rumbles on.

Swiss prosecutors are now investigating the World Cup bids and say they are looking at more than 120 suspicious payments in FIFA’s books.

In a recent interview, Blatter said a diplomatic arrangement had been reached under which Russia would get the 2018 World Cup and the United States 2022, until Platini changed his mind and opted to back Qatar.

That has just increased confusion, with England’s Football Association saying it reserves the right to demand compensation if the 2018 vote was decided in advance.

Football’s world body is also still reeling from US charges against 14 football officials and marketing executives over more than US$150 million in bribes allegedly paid for marketing and TV deals.

Blatter is under investigation by Swiss investigators for a US$2 million payment to Platini. It has already been decided that future World Cup hosts will be chosen by all 209 FIFA members, not just the all-powerful executive.

But reforms are too limited, according to top sponsors who want outside figures brought in to lead the process. “If we are not satisfied in that regard we will reassess our sponsorship,” Visa vice-chairman Ellen Richey told the British lawmakers in October.

Atletico Madrid edge towards last 16 of Copa del Rey

A youthful Atletico Madrid side came back from a goal down to beat third-tier Reus 2-1 on Tuesday to edge towards the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

atletico-madrid-3

Lucas Hernandez’s defensive error allowed Fran to fire the Catalans into a shock lead on the half hour mark. However, 10-time winners Atletico responded immediately through Luciano Vietto’s headed equaliser before Saul Niguez flicked home the winner 27 minutes from time. The two sides meet again in the second leg on Dec 17.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone made seven changes to the side that beat Espanyol on Saturday to remain second in La Liga. And that lack of continuity showed early on against a Reus side that had only been beaten once previously this season on their way to leading their regional division in the third tier.

Vietto should have opened the scoring when he fired straight at Edgar Badia with a clear sight of goal after seven minutes. However, the opener arrived at the other end as Hernandez slipped under pressure from Fran and the playmaker confidently slotted past Miguel Angel Moya.

Vietto made amends for his earlier miss with a fine header into the bottom corner to level six minutes later. Atletico had far more control after the break, but needed a set-piece to break Reus down as Saul’s clever flicked header from Koke’s corner looped into the far corner.

Holders Barcelona are in action on Wednesday when they host Villanovense in the second leg of their fourth round tie at the Camp Nou after a 0-0 draw in Extremadura five weeks ago. Real Madrid also open their Cup campaign on Wednesday away to Cadiz.

Higuain at the double as Napoli go top of Serie A

Gonzalo Higuain struck in either half as Napoli toppled 10-man Inter Milan 2-1 in a spectacular clash at the San Paolo to go top of the Serie A table on Monday (Nov 30).

napoli-1

Inter travelled south for the first big away test of what they hope will be a title-winning campaign, but with just a two-point cushion on a Napoli side whose last defeat came on the opening day of the season.

Inter were shell-shocked by the lightning start of Maurizio Sarri’s men and their hopes of staying top suffered a blow when Yuto Nagatomo saw red a minute before the interval.

But Inter regrouped and Adem Ljajic reduced arrears on the hour with a fine individual strike. Yet despite a battling finish that saw the visitors hit the woodwork twice, it wasn’t enough to stop Napoli going a point clear at the top for the first time this season.

Inter drop to second with Fiorentina, held 1-1 at Sassuolo earlier Monday, a point further off the pace in third.

Higuain and Napoli’s players milked the applause at an appreciative San Paolo and the Argentina striker dedicated taking his league-leading tally for the season to 12 goals to the city and the fans.

“It’s a magic night. I’m happy for the fans, for the team and for the people of Napoli,” Higuain told Sky Sport. “I think we deserve it, it’s not often we’re in the lead. The season is still long, but we have to capitalise on going top.”

Roma’s shock 2-0 home defeat to Atalanta has left embattled Rudi Garcia’s side in fourth at four points behindNapoli, with champions Juventus now up to fifth, at seven points off the pace.

Napoli began at break-neck speed and a panicky Inter were made to pay for Jeison Murillo’s mis-hit clearance on the edge of the area when it found its way to Higuain via a deft touch from Jose Callejon. The Argentinian was left in space on the right and coolly volleyed past Samir Handanovic.

Nagatomo, who had earlier been cautioned for a foul on Callejon, was given his marching orders, rather harshly, when he was cautioned for a second time after sliding in late but without malice to challenge Allan, who was left writhing on the ground.

Mancini hit out at the officiating when he told to Premium Sport: “Nagatomo didn’t deserve his first yellow card, Callejon simulated the foul. The red card that sent Nagatomo off for a half-foul was decisive. “Without the red, we wouldn’t have lost.”

But when asked about Inter’s biggest tormentor, Mancini didn’t hide: “Higuain’s an amazing striker. You give him half a ball and he scores.”

Mancini introduced full-back Alex Telles for striker Mauro Icardi but Napoli soon added to their tally. Higuain was unstoppable as he ran on to Raul Albiol’s powerful header and out-sprinted Inter’s centre-backs to smash his finish past Handanovic.

Higuain’s 12th league goal this season took him clear of Sampdoria striker Eder.

Inter reduced arrears minutes later when Ljajic fired low into the near bottom corner through a crowd of defenders.

Inter almost caused a sensation in added-on time when a Stevan Jovetic header bounced off the post. In the follow-up, Reina scrambled to tip Miranda’s effort on to the other upright.

Earlier, title-chasing Fiorentina spurned the chance to go top after a 1-1 draw at feisty Sassuolo.

Borja Valero broke the deadlock after five minutes but Fiorentina were made to pay for a series of misses when Sergio Floccari headed home the leveller three minutes before the interval.

Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa said his side were “tired” after a 2-2 Europa League draw at FC Basel last week.

“I’m disappointed, we paid for our efforts last Thursday and after the interval Sassuolo moved up a gear. We missed the chance for 2-0, then in the second half we got tired and lost concentration.”

Coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan of Hoang Anh Gia Lai said he knew how to tear through the South Korean net in the final match of the International U21 Football Tournament.

Công Phượng tỏa sáng, U21 HAGL bảo vệ thành công ngôi vô địch

He was correct, after his beloved player, Nguyen Cong Phuong, scored a double to help his team successfully defend their title yesterday at HCM City’s Thong Nhat Stadium.

The first goal proved to be Phuong’s superb individual effort, leading the ball from midfield, passing several South Korean players before making a stunning shot from 30m to open the score.

This goal was voted the best of the tournament.

The second goal was an excellent combination between Phuong and striker Nguyen Van Toan.

Phuong left three Koreans behind, delivering the ball to Toan, who broke into the penalty area and sent it back to Phuong near the 5.5m line. The national U23 team member did not miss this clear shot, as the clock went to the final minutes.

Phuong, who will travel to Japan in mid-December to prepare for his J.League 2 competition, has the best score, with five goals during the annual event.

South Korea tried to turn around the game with three changes of players in the second half, but all of coach An Ik Soo’s attempts proved unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Captain Lee Dong-jun twice tested goalkeeper Pham Van Tien’s skill, but both of his kicks and header were not goals.

With the win, Hoang Anh Gia Lai also paid their debt after losing 0-1 to South Korea during their group round match last week.

In the third-placed play-off match, Viet Nam lost 5-6 to Singapore after a penalty shootout.

Captain Than Thanh Tin and Dau Van Toan missed their shots, while only Muhammad Farhan of Singapore failed to score.

The two sides drew 1-1 in the official time. Goals went to Vietnamese Nhu Tuan at the 65th minute and Singapore’s Joshua Bernard Pereira in the additional time.

It was the second time Viet Nam lost after the penalties.

They were defeated 2-3 by Hoang Anh Gia Lai in the semi-finals.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi, the favourite to win FIFA’s prestigious Ballon d’Or title, was on Monday voted the top striker in the Spanish league last season ahead of Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

barcelona-s-argentinian

It is the sixth time that the Argentinian has won the title in seven editions of the trophy given by the Spanish football league, with the prize presented during a gala ceremony in Barcelona on Monday night.

Messi, who scored 43 goals and was the catalyst for Barcelona’s run to three titles last season – the Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Cup – was selected following a computer analysis of the players’ statistics in the championship.

“I’m proud to receive this award ahead of so many important players in La Liga,” said Messi. “This award in particular I want to dedicate to my son Thiago (aged 3) even if he still doesn’t understand very well. Every time I leave the house he gets angry and asks me: ‘Papa, are you going again to score goals?’ This award is for him.”

Messi also won the vote for the best striker following a poll of the captains of each of Spain’s top flight sides.

Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo was voted the best goalkeeper and Luis Enrique top coach while Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez were named best defender and midfielder respectively.

Valencia’s Algerian midfielder Sofiane Feghouli was voted the top African player and Barcelona’s Brazilian striker Neymar, the best player from the American continent.

Real Madrid’s Portuguese star Ronaldo, who scored the most La Liga goals last season with 48, won the public’s choice award.

Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar were all named on Monday’s shortlist for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or which will be awarded on January 11.

While Ronaldo has triumphed over the last two seasons (in a total of three wins), Messi has previously claimed the coveted award four times while Neymar makes the shortlist for the first time.

Neymar, 23, said it was “a great honour” to be named for the first time alongside his illustrious La Liga rivals.

While Portuguese Ronaldo has triumphed over the last two seasons (in a total of three wins), Argentinian Messi has previously claimed the coveted award four times while Brazilian Neymar makes the shortlist for FIFA’s player of the year award for the first time.

Messi was the catalyst for Barcelona’s impressive run to three titles last season (the Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Cup) and will be the standout favourite ahead of Ronaldo.

The Portugal international might have finished the season without a trophy, but his individual talent shone out as he was La Liga’s highest scorer with 48 goals, and has notched up a leading seven in the Champions League this term.

World Cup-winning captain Carli Lloyd (USA/Houston Dash), Aya Miyama (Japan/Okayama Yunogo Belle), and Celia Sasic (Germany/1. FFC Frankfurt) are in the running for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award.

Football Championships match on November 20.
South Korea played with a U-19 team that will compete at next year’s U19 Asian Football Championships.
Both teams impressed with exciting attacks from the very beginning at Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium with more than 20,000 spectators and 250 reporters.
Kim Jeonghwan scored the match’s only goal for South Korea with a swift attack in the 24th minute from a narrow corner that defeated Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s goalkeeper Van Tien.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai missed a chance to level the score after Kim Seokjin apparently played the ball with his hand but referee Hadimin Shahbuddin did not award Hoang Anh a penalty.
The Vietnamese team organized many attacks but they were unable to score a goal.
Coach Nguyen Quoc Tuan said his players had performed well except for finishing shots.
“I’d like to congratulate South Korea on their victory… South Korea U19 players made the best of their chances,” he said after the match.
Tuan said he was pleased in particular with midfielder Tuan Anh as he has recovered fully from a previous injury.
“We will have to defeat Myanmar for a ticket to the semis,” he said.
Earlier on the same day, Thailand was held by Singapore with a 2-2 draw.
