Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona: Suarez scores twice as Benitez’s men humiliated in the Clasico

The Uruguayan striker bagged a double, with Neymar and Andres Iniesta also on target as Luis Enrique’s side ran riot at the Bernabeu on Saturday
Barcelona romped to a dominant Clasico triumph on Saturday as two goals from Luis Suarez inspired them to a 4-0 thrashing of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Rafael Benitez had vowed to attack the Liga leaders and he named Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez in his starting line-up, but it was Barca who took the lead when Suarez fired beyond Keylor Navas, with the returning Lionel Messi watching from the bench.

Neymar made it 2-0 shortly before the break and a stunning goal from Andres Iniesta put the champions firmly in charge early in the second period before Suarez’s delicate finish made it four after Messi – who came on in the 55th minute – had fed Jordi Alba.

Madrid’s players never looked comfortable in Benitez’s deep-lying set-up and the front three were isolated throughout, though Claudio Bravo denied Cristiano Ronaldo superbly late on.

The result means Barca are now six points clear of Madrid at the top of the table and piles further pressure on Benitez’s shoulders ahead of a crucial few weeks before the winter break.

After a slow opening it was Neymar who missed the first good chance, blasting over the bar from the edge of the area after Suarez had teed him up following Alba’s cross.

Madrid responded swiftly, Bravo beating away Ronaldo’s cross after some fine interplay between the reunited front three of the Portuguese, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

But Barca were in front with 11 minutes on the clock. Sergi Roberto burst through the heart of midfield and, as Sergio Ramos pushed up to close him down, he slipped the ball through to Suarez who bent a low shot past Navas and into the bottom corner.

Neymar brought a good save from Navas with a free-kick before Bravo denied James Rodriguez low to his left after Luka Modric set him up 20 yards out, but Barca doubled their advantage just six minutes before the break.

Iniesta was granted far too much time and space in the final third and a delicate chipped pass allowed Neymar to spring the offside trap and squeeze the ball under Navas at the near post.

Barca almost made it three just before half-time, Marcelo recovering superbly to head the ball off the line after Neymar had combined brilliantly with Suarez.

Madrid came flying out of the traps in the second half and Marcelo should have done much better when he fired into the side-netting after running clean through down the left.

Bravo turned a James shot around the post but Madrid were cut apart again on 53 minutes as Barcelona bagged a third. Iniesta, once more given the freedom of the final third, passed in to Neymar and, after the Brazilian back-heeled into his path, fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Benitez threw on Dani Carvajal and Isco and the full-back came close to a goal as he scuffed a shot narrowly wide, before Raphael Varane headed straight at Bravo from close range.

Bale bent a fine pass to Ronaldo on the break but Navas stood up well to deny the Portugal captain’s lofted effort, and Barca had a fourth just six minutes later. Alba touched Messi’s pass on to Suarez, who clipped a finish beyond Navas and into the far corner without a Madrid defender in sight.

Bravo saved superbly to keep out Ronaldo’s header and Madrid’s evening went from bad to worse when substitute Isco was sent off for kicking Alba as he ran clear in the closing minutes, allowing Barca to ease to an emphatic victory.

Juventus down Milan

Juventus’ climb up the Serie A table continued with a 1-0 victory over AC Milan on Saturday.

w638_h359_at__100822

A second-half goal from Paulo Dybala was enough for Juve to secure the three points at the Juventus Stadium.

After a dire start to the season, Juventus have won three league matches in succession, and now move past Milan and into sixth place on the standings.

The game got underway amidst tightened secureity following last week’s terror attacks in Paris, and the French anthem was played before the first whistle in Turin and at the day’s early game in Bologna.

In an encounter described by Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic as “an ugly match”, it was Juve midfielder Paul Pogba who nearly opened the scoring on the hour mark, but Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was able to parry his effort.

Juve didn’t have to wait much longer for the opener though, with Alex Sandro’s cross from the left controlled by Dybala on his chest before powering the ball past Donnarumma from close range.

Earlier in the day at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara where Bologna faced Roma, Mattia Destro proved a thorn in his former club’s side with the Bologna forward’s 87th-minute penalty ensuring that the hosts held Roma to a 2-2.

Adam Masina opened the scoring for Bologna in the 14th minute when he bundled the ball into the back of the net after the ball at ping ponged about in the area when Roma failed to clear a corner from the left.

Seven minutes after the break Roma were level when Miralem Pjanic converted from the spot following Anthony Mounier’s handball.

On-loan striker Edin Dzeko but the visitors ahead in the 72nd minute, with the goal once again coming courtesy of a penalty, this time after Luca Rossettini had fouled Juan Manuel Iturbe.

There would be one further twist in the tale though, with Destro grabbing a late equaliser after Bologna were awarded a penalty of their own after Vasilios Torosidis brought down Emanuele Giaccherini.

The point is enough to see Roma join Fiorentina at the top of the standings, with Viola in action against Empoli on Sunday. Bologna move up one spot to 15th.

Manchester City 1-4 Liverpool: Rampant Reds stun Pellegrini’s men

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino combined to brilliant effect in the first half as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead, with Martin Skrtel making the game safe late on
Liverpool turned in a stunning first-half performance to secure a shock 4-1 victory over Manchester City.

2279952

Jurgen Klopp’s side were clinical on the counter-attack, racing into a three-goal lead that brought an end to a run of six Premier League matches away at City without a win.

Eliaquim Mangala – brought into the centre of defence along with Martin Demichelis – opened the scoring with an own goal early on, setting the tone for a dismal defensive display.

Philippe Coutinho scored his fourth goal in five top-flight appearances against City to double Liverpool’s advantage, with Roberto Firmino – in for Christian Benteke in attack – adding the third in sensational fashion.

Making his return after a seven-week absence, Sergio Aguero brilliantly pulled one back for City shortly before the interval, but they were unable to push on in the second half.

Their misery was compounded nine minutes from time when Martin Skrtel blasted past Joe Hart from the edge of the box, meaning City now sit third behind rivals Manchester United and shock league leaders Leicester City.

Mangala got off to a poor start on his return to the starting line-up, putting the ball into the back of his own net off a cutback from Firmino, though Bacary Sagna was partly culpable having lost possession beforehand.

2279182

Liverpool grabbed their second when a mix-up between Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov was capitalised upon by Firmino, who raced through and picked out Coutinho with a sublime pass which he slid between Hart’s legs.

The Reds’ defence was, in contrast, proving impressively resilient and their counter-attacking play continued to trouble Pellegrini’s side.

Another break led to their third shortly after the half-hour mark, when Emre Can’s backheel set Coutinho in behind the defence and he squared for Firmino to round off an exquisite move with the simplest of finishes.

The former Hoffenheim forward came close to adding to his tally twice in quick succession soon after, first being denied by a good save from Hart before firing narrowly wide nine minutes before the break.

Aguero gave City a lifeline two minutes before the interval when he curled home an exceptional finish from 25 yards, becoming the highest-scoring South American in Premier League history with his 85th goal.

Pellegrini replaced Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas with Fernandinho and Fabian Delph for the second half in a bid to add more solidity to his team.

However, it compromised their creativity and they were carved open once again on the hour mark, but Hart made a vital save to deny Firmino once more.

Klopp’s side suffered a wobble moments later, Simon Mignolet forced into a diving save to keep Aguero at bay before Fernandinho skied an effort from six yards out off a set-piece delivery.

Skrtel fired home a powerful fourth from just inside the box and City’s day was summed up when Raheem Sterling – facing his former employers – failed to make contact with the goal at his mercy as Liverpool moved up to ninth.

Shock, horror for 80,000 fans at Stade de France

It started as a celebration of football, a glamour friendly between France and world champions Germany in front of 80,000 fans at Paris’s showpiece Stade de France.

spectators-gather-on-the

It started as a celebration of football, a glamour friendly between France and world champions Germany in front of 80,000 fans at Paris’s showpiece Stade de France.

Then they heard the explosions.

“I thought it was just a firework, then my friends told me what was going on in Paris,” said a French fan in his 20s as the grim reality of Friday’s deadly attacks suddenly hit home.

When three loud explosions were heard from outside the stadium during the first half, football soon drifted from the minds of the spectators when it eventually emerged that three people had died near the arena in the north of the city.

Later, the death toll climbed to five outside the glittering venue which staged the 1998 World Cup final with 11 seriously hurt and around 30 people slightly injured.

It emerged that one of the explosions was near to a McDonald’s restaurant on the fringes of the stadium.

A police source later said that one of the blasts was caused by a suicide bomber on the Rue Jules Rimet.

“A man wearing an explosives belt blew himself up,” said the officer.

French president Francois Hollande, who was in attendance at the game, was hurried from the stadium amid the early reports of shootings in central Paris and of the developing hostage crisis in the Bataclan theatre.

“The game’s going on and it’s awful – I’ll be honest, I’m very spooked,” said an AFP journalist as the match progressed.

At first, very few, if any, of the crowd appeared to be aware of the significance of what was happening despite the appearance of helicopters low in the sky overhead during the second half and the audible sound of sirens from outside.

The crowd still loudly celebrated goals by Olivier Giroud and substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac late in either half of the match that gave France the win.

However, with tight security building up around the stadium, there was evident confusion after the final whistle.

With exit points being restricted, large numbers of fans poured onto the pitch.

There was no visible sense of panic, but it was after 11.30pm local time (2230 GMT) before the pitch was emptied.

“One of the fast food restaurants was being searched by police forensics and officers dressed in white outfits,” added an AFP reporter outside the ground.

The evacuation of the fans finished at around midnight, many heading for their cars, others to catch the train back into the city.

“The RER B (one of the main suburban train lines serving the station) isn’t working…It’s a black Friday the 13th,” said 27-year-old Sarah Gopal, carrying a French flag in her hand.

The drama followed events earlier in the day when the German team were evacuated from their plush hotel in the west of Paris following a bomb scare.

When the players left the field at the end of the game, they had other concerns on their minds which went beyond the significance of the game.

As they gathered in the tunnel, world famous superstars like Germany’s World Cup winner Thomas Mueller and Arsenal striker Giroud immediately turned their attention to the TV screens, staring blank-faced as the horror on the streets of Paris unfolded.

Thinh to leave Song Lam Nghe An

Midfielder Ngo Hoang Thinh will leave V.League 1’s club Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) after his contract with the club ends in December, the club confirmed.

thinh

“Although we want him to stay with us, we can’t keep him,” said Nguyen Hong Thanh, general director of SLNA Football Joint Stock Company.

Thinh said he wanted to play for a team more ambitious than SLNA, which ranked seventh in the national premier league this year.

Can Tho and Quang Ninh Coal team invited him to play for them but he said he hadn’t decided.

Thinh was called to the national team for the ASEAN Football Federation-Suzuki Cup 2014. The 24-year-old midfield lynchpin was highly valued by coach Toshiya Miura for his combative and high-energy play in a team that prizes efficiency in passing and movement.

His teammates midfielder Nguyen Quang Tinh and defender Le The Cuong also left SLNA for Can Tho earlier this year.

Thang signs with Hai Phong

Midfielder Le Van Thang has agreed a one-year contract to play for Hai Phong next season.

thang

Thang is the best Vietnamese scorer of the V.League 1 with 16 goals in 25 matches.

He ranks second in the scoring table with two goals less than best scorer Tambwe Patiyo of Quang Nam. Patiyo is a Congolese footballer.

Thang moved to Can Tho under a three-year deal. But after one year with his outstanding performance he has lured attention from several clubs before choosing Hai Phong.

Can Tho managers let Thang leave and in exchange midfielder Dinh Tien Thanh of Hai Phong will continue to play for Can Tho for another year on loan.

No more details of the contract have been revealed.

Bangu Atletico defeat Long An 1-0

Salatiel Santos de Menezes scored the only goal in Bangu Atletico Clube’s 1-0 win over Dong Tam Long An in the International Football Tournament-Binh Duong Television Number One Cup yesterday.

sinhvien3
It was the last match in the Group B round.

Santos broke the off-side trap before he left Dong Tam Long An’s goalkeeper Nguyen Tien Anh behind to shoot into an empty net in the 55th minute.

Earlier, Deivision William Borges of Dong Tam Long An hit Brazilian Bangu Atletico Clube’s net but his goal was not recognised because of another off-side trap.

When the V. League side had not yet regrouped to restart the game, keeper A. Teixeira of Bangu Atletico Clube kicked off a rapid attack. With a long and strong pass he gave the ball to Menezes who sprinted up and netted.

With the second win, Bangu Atletico Clube has seven points and tops the group ranking. The team entered the semi-final round. Meanwhile, Dong Tam Long An has been disqualified.

In an earlier match, the Japanese student squad trounced Quang Ninh Coal, another Vietnamese club, 3-0 to take the semi-final berth.

Defender Nguyen Van Viet’s own goal was the start of the nightmare for the local team, which suffered two other shocks, as midfielders Kiyotani Kai and Aoyagi Ryota scored in the first half.

Coach Pham Nhu Thuan used all three changes in the second half but failed to overturn the situation.

His team lost all three matches in the tournament.

The Japanese will play the South Korean students in the knock-out stage while Bangu Atletico Clube will meet hosts Becamex Binh Duong tomorrow.

In the Group A activities on Tuesday, Becamex Binh Duong entered the semi-finals thanks to a draw.

The hosts drew with a South Korean student squad 2-2 in the last group match.

Pape Omar Faye and Nguyen Anh Duc scored for the hosts, while Jeong Wonjin and Kim Geonhee levelled the score.

As a result, the Koreans and Sanna Khanh Hoa, who beat Myanmar’s Yadanarbon FC 2-1 in another game, had five points each. But the Koreans entered the knockout round as they had the best goal difference.

Meanwhile, the other two teams shared the second position. And Becamex Binh Duong progressed after a lucky draw.
