V.League relegation zone continues to be tight

Hosts Hoang Anh Gia Lai were held to a 1-1 draw by Can Tho in a V-League 20th round match Sunday, and both teams continue to struggle to escape relegation.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Can Tho shared 1 points each with a 1-1 draw on August 9.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Can Tho shared 1 points each with a 1-1 draw on August 9.

HAGL tried in vain to get the full three points at home, especially with Sanogo Moussa getting a red card in the 70th minute.
The Central Highlands team began without several key defenders like Duc Luong, Tien Dung, Dong Trieu, and Van Long who were injured or suspended.
Coach Guillaume Graechen had to push midfielder Tuan Anh back to work with Clovis Franklin in defense.
Both Graechen and Can Tho Coach Nguyen Thanh Danh hailed Tuan Anh after the match.
Danh said: “He did very well to coordinate with other players to block several attacks. I would give him 9/10 points. He had an excellent performance.”
Graechen said his players played well, especially after losing a player to a red card just like in the previous match against Quang Ninh.
Can Tho took the lead in the 49th minute but HAGL’s subsequent counterattacks were fruitful with a header by Hoang Thanh Tung leveling the score.
Moussa was sent off for hitting Can Tho’s Tien Thanh off the ball, but Can Tho could not take advantage of it.
Can Tho are still safe with 17 points, followed by two teams in the relegation zone with 14 points each — Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Dong Nai, who lost 1-2 away to Hai Phong the same day.
At the business end of the table, Becamex Binh Duong continued to lead after beating Dong Tam Long An 3-1.
Thanh Hoa remained second a point behind after defeating Quang Ninh 3-1

Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn believes the Bavarians’ decision to sell Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United was the correct one.

Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn believes the Bavarians’ decision to sell Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United was the correct one.
Schweinsteiger came off the bench to make his debut for the Red Devils in their 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Germany captain’s departure left many Bayern fans feeling confused an upset why the club was willing to let the midfielder leave, but Kahn is convinced the club made the right call because the playmaker was unlikely to be able to hold down a regular place in the first team this season.
“A club cannot make allowances for what a player has achieved for them, but they are responsible for looking at what he is currently doing for them,” Kahn told Kicker magazine.
Bayern current boast Aturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, Xabi Alonso, Phillip Lahm, David Alaba, newly-signed Joshua Kimmich and Javi Martinez all capable of playing in central midfield.
“I certainly don’t think Schweinsteiger would have been suited to being a back-up player,” Kahn added. “With that in mind, this decision is understandable.”
The retired goalkeeper went on to warn Schweinsteiger he would need to adapt to a new style of play, and quickly, if he was to succeed in the Premier League.
“Bayern’s style of play was suited to him, but he’s going to have to adapt to an extremely high tempo at Manchester United,” he added.
“He could run into problems relatively quickly if he does not get back to a top physical condition.”

West Brom have confirmed the club-record £12 million signing of striker Salomon Rondon on a four-year deal from Zenit St Petersburg.
The 25-year-old striker had been linked with a host of clubs but arrived at the Baggies’ training ground last week to discuss terms and undergo a medical.
The club and player have since been waiting on international clearance to confirm the move, and Rondon has now become West Brom’s fifth signing during the current transfer window.
Talking to Albion’s website upon signing his deal, Rondon said: “I am very happy to be here. This is a new opportunity in my career. I can’t wait to be with the other players and to play.
“The club showed a lot of interest in me, that’s what is important for a player, what you take into account, and there are expectations of me.”
Manager Tony Pulis added: “He’s got a fantastic goalscoring record in some of the top leagues in Europe and for his country. He’s 25 years of age and still to fulfil his full potential.
“We hope he hits the ground running of course but understand it might take him time to settle. I’m sure our fans will help him and get behind him.”

Sterling makes City bow
Adventurous Baggies undone
Silva stars for visitors
Lambert fails to shine on debut
Match Summary
A brace from Yaya Toure, though the first may be claimed by David Silva, had City two up and in command inside 25 minutes while debutant Raheem Sterling squandered a good chance on the strke of half-time.
However, a Vincent Kompany header in the second half sealed a comprehensive opening fixture win for last season’s Premier League runners-up and pole position in the league standings following the opening round of fixtures.
Full Report
WBA, who secured the signing of £12million striker Soloman Rondon shortly before kick-off, rarely troubled Joe Hart in the City goal.
Tony Pulis set his side up adventurously, pairing last season’s top scorer Saido Berahino with summer recruit Rickie Lambert in attack, but WBA never looked like establishing a foothold.
City were in control from the off, with David Silva in especially mesmeric form throughout. It was Toure who was the difference-maker in front of goal, though.
In the ninth minute, the midfield behemoth latched onto a cut-back from Jesus Navas to side-foot his side into a deserved lead with the help of a couple of deflections along the way, the first of which could lead to the goal being attributed to Silva.
However, there was no question about who the second goal belonged to. Exchanging passes with Ivory Coast team-mate Wilfried Bony, Toure curled a sumptuous strike into the top corner of the net.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men didn’t stop there, either. Bony and Aleksandar Kolarov saw efforts denied by last ditch WBA interventions, and £49million summer signing Raheem Sterling should have written his name on the scoresheet just before half-time, but finished disappointingly when one-on-one with Baggies stopper Boaz Myhill.
The third goal did eventually arrive, though, and it did so through an unlikely source. With 59 minutes played, City skipper Kompany glanced a header into the far corner from Silva’s pinpoint corner.
West Brom enjoyed more of the game after that as City relaxed their stranglehold, with Berahino wasting the best of the opportunities, but his was a game very much played on the visitor’s terms for the duration.

Well-trained football team from Arsenal-affiliated academy fails to impress in Vietnam league

Talented young footballers of Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) FC, who graduated from an Arsenal-supported academy in Vietnam, are battling relegation from the top-flight league of the country.

Two HAGL players are seen shaking hands during substitution in a match in the 2015 V-League 1

Two HAGL players are seen shaking hands during substitution in a match in the 2015 V-League 1

After 19 out of a total of 26 rounds in the top-tier 2015 V-League 1, HAGL have pocketed only 13 points from three wins and four draws.
That means they have suffered 12 losses so far.
With the league to wrap up in seven rounds, HAGL are currently at risk of being relegrated to the lower league next season, together with Dong Nai, who have accumulated a mere 14 points and stand at the 13th place in the table.
Despite so many losses, the HAGL players have received enthusiastic support from fans for their dynamic football.
These footballers were trained for seven years at the Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG Academy which Doan Nguyen Duc, one of Vietnam’s richest men, spent US$4 million founding in 2007.
Their fans have asked themselves a question that why the side with such talented and well-trained players have delivered such a disappointing performance.
The HAGL players have displayed beautiful football but it is not smooth and superior enough to create diversification in their performance.
French coach Guillaume Graechen leads his players to consistently play fast football with one touch, short passes, strong team coordination, and pressing attacks initiated from midfield.
That ‘monotone’ has failed to create surprise, however.
Many rival teams have known how to neutralize their style of play by deploying strong players in midfield to stage tough competition there and thus cut the link between the HAGL players in the defensive and offensive lines.
HAGL have also failed to find qualified foreign players, who contribute a lot to the success of any V-League 1 club.
The Vietnamese players of HAGL are the youngest in this year’s league with the average age of 21.7 years.
They are ‘fresh graduates’ and therefore lack experience but they have not received necessary assistance from their foreign teammates.
Their popularity, which results from their graduation from the Arsenal academy, is to blame for their defeats as well.
Such players as Cong Phuong, Van Toan, Thanh Tung, Xuan Truong, Tuan Anh, and Van Son have become the idols of many young fans since they displayed fantastic football in international tournaments in the past.
So much expectation from supporters has created a lot of pressure on the young and inexperienced players, thus rendering them unable to showcase their full capacity.
Doan Nguyen Duc, who is also chairman of HAGL, once expected that players who graduate from his academy will be capable of playing in European leagues.

West Brom v Manchester City

Manchester City will be looking to get their 2015/16 Premier League campaign off to the perfect start when they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom on Monday.

w638_h359_at__69019

Manchester City will be looking to get their 2015/16 Premier League campaign off to the perfect start when they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom on Monday evening.
The Citizens relinquished the top-flight crown to Chelsea last term after finishing as runners-up, while they also ended without any silverware, suffering an early-round defeat in the Champions League while also faltering the League Cup and FA Cup.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini has looked to improve their chances of mounting another title challenge this term following the acquisition of club-record signing Raheem Sterling, who joined for £49m from Liverpool.
Also snapped up during the off-season were Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts, although the former is unable to make his debut against the Baggies as he is out with a hamstring injury.
Also missing with a knock is Gael Clichy, although Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Samir Nasri have all recovered from illness and should start.
For the hosts, manager Tony Pulis enters his second season in charge and will be looking to improve on their 13th-placed finish last season.
The boss has done well to strengthen his options during the transfer period, including the signings of James Chester from Hull, as well as Rickie Lambert and Wigan duo James McClean and Callum McManaman.
However, Joleon Lescott is a doubt to start the new season against his former employers, with the West Brom defender facing a late fitness test, while new loan signing from Arsenal, Serge Gnabry, is not expected to play any part.

Cassano returns to Sampdoria

The former AC Milan, Inter and Real Madrid forward spent four years with the club between 2007 and 2011 and has now sealed his comeback

antonio-cassano_1w70jq5sef2nt12zki9blg8sss

Sampdoria have confirmed Antonio Cassano has returned to the club for a second spell and signed a two-year deal at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

The 33-year-old was a free agent after terminating his contract with Parma towards the end of last season following a dispute over unpaid wages as the club suffered a financial meltdown.

But he has been handed a lifeline by his former club, despite the club’s head coach Walter Zenga repeatedly rejecting any chance of Cassano returning.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero intervened and wants the forward to become one of the club’s leaders.

“He will become our symbol,” he said. “He will prove himself to be a great man.”

Cassano added his thoughts on the move with some brief words for the club’s official website, saying: “I am so happy. Always Forza Samp!”

The former Italy international had endured a controversial career blighted by numerous episodes of indiscipline. Indeed, his first spell at Sampdoria ended under a cloud following a bust-up with former president Riccardo Garrone.

Gia Lai stuck in relegation battle

A big loss recently to Quang Ninh Coal in the V.League 1 gave Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s coaching board something to worry about, though they still believe they have a chance to remain in the national premier league

Uphill task: Hoang Anh Gia Lai leave the field after losing to Quang Ninh Coal. They are struggling to avoid relegation from V.League 1.

Uphill task: Hoang Anh Gia Lai leave the field after losing to Quang Ninh Coal. They are struggling to avoid relegation from V.League 1.

One of the reasons is the team’s favourable schedule in the last seven rounds, which includes their hosting Can Tho in the 20th round this weekend at home in Pleiku City.
“The defeat made our players very sad, but none of them have become pessimistic. They all have shown their determination,” said Nguyen Tan Anh, a member of the Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC management.
“The loss pushed us closer to the relegation, but we will never say die. We will play matches for our survival ahead. And first of all, we have to win over Can Tho to keep our hopes alive,” Anh said.
This weekend, Hoang Anh Gia Lai will have no first-choice goalkeeper because Pham Van Tien received a red card on Wednesday.
Their best midfielder, Bui Tien Dung, will also be absent because of being issued two yellow cards.
Anh, however, still thinks positively, saying that coach Guillaume Graechen will have suitable plans and, of course, Hoang Anh Gia Lai will continue with its style of attacking and never play defensively.
Graechen said he has no qualified foreign players this season and his defenders need to improve, causing the entire team to perform poorly. Also, the weakness of the defence has strongly affected the spirit of the forwards.
The Frenchman added that from now on, his players will have focus during every game, playing at 200 per cent of their capacity. They have to save themselves when there is an opportunity.
He added that the gap between teams at the bottom is small, so a win would change many things and they need to have special plans and careful preparations.
In the first leg, Hoang Anh Gia Lai lost 1-3 to Can Tho.
Another match in the round that will lure fans will be a meet between two former winners, Ha Noi T&T and Song Lam Nghe An, at Hang Day Stadium.
Ha Noi T&T are at their best, as they won every prize in July and were recognised as the most outstanding team of the month.
The V.League 1 side was voted best club, with four wins and one draw, leading to 18 goals. They have climbed to No 5 on the ranking table.
Phan Thanh Hung was named best coach, while national midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet was the best player, scoring seven goals.
Ha Noi T&T are at home facing a team that they have never defeated in the club’s history.
Despite being visitors, Song Lam Nghe An will be supported by 7,000 fans who pledged to turn the stadium yellow, the colour of the club’s uniform.
The two sides have met 13 times, with Ha Noi T&T drawing 10 and losing three.
In the first leg, defending champions Becamex Binh Duong will play Dong Tam Long An, who they defeated three days ago at the National Cup’s semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Coach Ngo Quang Sang of Dong Tam Long An said his team has targeted earning at least one point from this match.
Elsewhere, FLC Thanh Hoa will entertain Quang Ninh Coal, who is one of the Cup’s two finalists; Hai Phong will see Dong Nai; Sanna Khanh Hoa will host Dong Thap; and SHB Da Nang will travel to Quang Nam.
