Host Hanoi T&T fielded strong players except for the naturalized striker Hoang Vu Samson, who was in Nigeria for medical treatment. Coach Phan Thanh Hung did not reveal the exact medical condition.
Meanwhile, about 300 Hai Phong fans came to Hang Day Stadium as their team tried to defend its National Cup title.
Fireworks have been launched before and during the match and hundreds of police officers have been mobilized to maintain order.
Hanoi T&T took an early lead in the 3rd minute with a goal by 31-year-old Argentine striker Gonzalo Damian Marronkle who had a thundering shot from 20m away to defeat goalkeeper Xuan Viet.
A confused Hai Phong’s defense almost led to another goal by Van Quyet a few minutes later after he passed many defenders but missed with his shot.
Hai Phong began to play tougher and referee Hoang Pham Cong Khanh gave a total of four yellow cards to Van Phu, Van Nam, Anh Hung and Quoc Trung.
In the 41st minute, Marronkle finished his double after passing through several Hai Phong defenders.

Vietnam sponsor suffers big losses on Man City fixture

Vietnam suffered an 8-1 hammering at the hands of English outfit Manchester City last week but the sponsor of the glamour fixture suffered far bigger losses.

Up2e28Dh
Do Quang Hien, chairman of SHB Bank, said he spent “about 40 billion Vietnam dong” ($1.83 million) bringing the four-times English champions to Southeast Asia with much more going on security, medical and organisation of the game in Hanoi.
“Man City mentioned strict conditions in the contract, especially ‘force majeure’, which said that the match would be cancelled if any of their footballers were injured or sick,” Hien was quoted as saying by Vietnamnet.vn.
“They proposed that we should buy insurance for the match and my assistant was struggling to find an insurance partner in Asia, but failed.”
Despite the losses, Hien declared himself happy with the near sell-out fixture and believed it would help Vietnam in their World Cup qualifying bid.
Big-spending Manchester City put on a show with new 49 million pounds ($76.35 million) signing Raheem Sterling scoring twice and first teamers Aleksandar Kolarov and David Silva also getting on the scoresheet.
“I was aware of a loss but this was a good chance to train our footballers to build up a professional football club that can earn revenue and support themselves,” Hien said.
“The match met fans’ expectations as they filled the stadium on the final match. Many Vietnamese footballers realised their dream to play with their favourite players from Man City.”

Wenger finally beats Mourinho after 14 tries as Arsenal win Community Shield

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claimed victory over Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho at the 14th attempt as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal gave the FA Cup winners a 1-0 win in Sunday’s Community Shield.

Arsenal players celebrate with the trophy after winning the FA Community Shield on August 2, 2015.

Arsenal players celebrate with the trophy after winning the FA Community Shield on August 2, 2015.

The England midfielder struck in the 24th minute at a sun-soaked Wembley Stadium to break Mourinho’s longstanding hold over his French rival and give Arsenal hope of a sustained assault on Chelsea’s Premier League title.
While Chelsea improved in the second half, they could not find a way past their former goalkeeper Petr Cech, who registered a clean sheet as his new club claimed their 13th outright Community Shield.

Wenger will be mindful that a 3-0 win over Manchester City in last season’s Community Shield was not followed by a convincing title bid, but with Cech already looking at home and Mourinho no longer able to boast a spotless record against him, he will approach next weekend’s opening league fixtures with pre-season belief fully intact.
Chelsea’s team-sheet suggested that Diego Costa is not yet free of the hamstring problems that plagued him last season, with Loic Remy leading the line in the Spain striker’s absence and new signing Radamel Falcao on the bench.
Questions about the reaction that Cech would receive from the fans of his old club were answered quickly, a standing ovation greeting him as he jogged over to the goal at the Chelsea end prior to kick-off.
Not for the first time, Wenger is embarking on a season with a surfeit of midfielders and he unveiled a new shape here that saw Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla line up on either flank, allowing Aaron Ramsey to take up his favoured central role alongside Francis Coquelin.
With Mesut Ozil shadowing lone striker Theo Walcott, who signed a new four-year contract on Friday, Arsenal were able to cluster men around the ball both in and out of possession, swarming around Chelsea’s midfielders to win the ball back before zipping quick passes between each other.
After Walcott had worked Thibaut Courtois with a header, he created Arsenal’s opener in the 24th minute with a pass wide to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who cut inside Cesar Azpilicueta and lashed home left-footed.

Hazard squanders chance

It was Arsenal’s first goal against Chelsea in 506 minutes of football.
A quiet showing from Eden Hazard left it to Ramires to drive Chelsea forward, the Brazil international curling wide from distance and heading a cross from Remy over the bar.
But there was greater thrust to Arsenal’s attacks and Ramsey threatened to add a second when he slammed a shot into the side-netting.
Remy, caught offside four times in the first half, gave way for Falcao at half-time and Oscar entered the fray shortly after in place of his countryman Ramires.
The changes revived Chelsea and after Oscar had dragged wide, Cesc Fabregas gave Hazard a clear sight of goal with a slide-rule pass, only for the off-key Belgian to blaze wastefully over from eight yards.
Cech was finally tested in the 69th minute, springing to his right to palm a free-kick from Oscar behind, which drew an approving roar from Arsenal’s supporters.
Moments earlier Olivier Giroud, a replacement for Walcott, had slid a cross from Oxlade-Chamberlain over the bar and he was to spurn an even better chance, prodding Ramsey’s right-wing cut-back over the top.
Cech also had to field a header from Chelsea substitute Kurt Zouma, but the best late openings fell to Arsenal, only for Courtois to save alertly and impressively from first Cazorla and then Kieran Gibbs.

Platini’s FIFA candidacy fails to excite Africa

Michel Platini’s bid for the FIFA presidency has garnered no immediate enthusiasm from Africa despite France’s strong footballing ties with the continent.

UEFA President Michel Platini looks on before the preliminary draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Konstantin Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia July 25, 2015

A day after confirming he would stand to replace Sepp Blatter as leader of world football, the Frenchman has been criticized by one African association and given a lukewarm endorsement by one of his closest allies.
“Platini would not represent change, he has been a FIFA vice-president for eight years. He should not replace Sepp Blatter, it would be unacceptable,” said Liberian Football Association president Musa Bility in a BBC interview.
Bility had declared his own candidacy but is expected to find it difficult to obtain the nomination of at least five associations that he needs to get on the ballot for next February’s election.
Platini has also failed to get an endorsement from former Ivory Coast federation president Jacques Anouma, who served with him on the FIFA executive committee.
Anouma was expected to push for African support for Platini but says he would rather take his cue from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Few friends

“I do not deny the excellent relationship I have with Michel Platini as I have with many other leaders of world football,” he wrote on his website (www.jacquesanouma.ci).
“However I would like to advise that I will side with the decision of CAF to safeguard the interest of African football.”
CAF have not made any comment on the impending election.
But Platini’s recent criticism of Blatter has won him few friends in Africa, where the Swiss incumbent remains popular.
“His harsh words against Blatter were not right. He could have disagreed in another way,” said three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele, a former vice president of the Ghana Football Association.
Platini is also unlikely to benefit from a perception that some European countries want to curtail Africa’s power bloc, with CAF boasting 54 member associations, more than any other confederation.
“European associations are hostile to the principle of one country one vote in FIFA,” added Senegal Football Federation President Augustin Seghor in the French magazine Jeune Afrique.
“It’s quite ironic to hear them constantly complaining about the lack of democracy in Africa but when it suits them advocating a totally unequal system.”

Sterling nets twice as Man City thump Vietnam 8-1

Raheem Sterling scored twice in 12 minutes to lead Manchester City to an 8-1 rout of Vietnam on Monday, stretching an impressive pre-season run after his recent high-profile move from Liverpool.

Manchester City’s Jose Pozo (R) scores past Vietnam’s goal keeper Nguyen Thanh Diep during a friendly soccer match at My Dinh stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, July 27, 2015.

The Englishman, who left Anfield in a 49 million-pound ($76 million) deal, clinched his brace inside 31 minutes amid a flurry of forays into the box that shook Vietnam and left the hosts struggling to stem the onslaught.
Aleksandar Kolarov and David Silva both scored a goal in each half for a City side testing out youngsters in a lop-sided match before near-sellout Hanoi crowd.
The victory was City’s third in four pre-season games on the road after wins in Australia over Melbourne City and Roma and a 4-1 defeat by Real Madrid. City play VfB Stuttgart in Germany on Saturday.
Kolarov put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, floating a 25-yard free kick into the corner with the keeper rooted to the ground.
Sterling opened his account after 19 minutes with a superb curling shot from an angle after being teed up by Silva. Silva prodded a loose ball home from close range just moments later, after his header was pushed on to the crossbar by Vietnamese keeper To Vinh Loi.
City made it four when Sterling darted into the area and blasted low into the corner after a one-two with Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho.
Vietnam defended desperately, and clumsily, but stepped up a gear at four down when they started playing for pride, with good moves from Le Cong Vinh and Nguyen Van Quyet bringing to life a deflated crowd.
But the fightback was short-lived, with Kolarov converting a spot-kick six minutes after the break and Silver adding his second from close range.
Marcos Lopes slotted under the keeper after 73 minutes and Jose Angel Pozo made it eight with 12 minutes left.
Vietnam salvaged a consolation goal in the dying seconds when Quyet lobbed the ball over substitute keeper Willy Caballero.
City Manager Manuel Pellegrini said Sterling had shown why he was on city’s radar.
“You watched the way he played today, he has a lot of speed,” Pellegrini told reporters.
“Raheem is a very good player, that’s why we brought him to our team. He has a lot of things we didn’t have in our squad.”

Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling scores a goal during the friendly match with Vietnam in Hanoi on July 27, 2015.

The hosts managed to net a consolation goal in the last minute of the game after Manchester City raided the Vietnamese goal frame with eight goals.
The atmosphere of the match was like a party, where fans ‘feasted on’ fantastic football from players of both sides.
Around 40,000 fans filled the stands of My Dinh National Stadium in the capital city an hour before the ‘football show’ started at 8:00 pm.
But only 200 faithful fans of Manchester City came to root for their team with banners and slogans, while the Vietnamese team had 50 ‘regular’ fans sitting in their familiar D stand.
That means the remaining fans were there to celebrate the nice looking football displayed by both sides.
Just 11 minutes into the game, City defender Aleksandar Kolarov opened the scoring with a trademark left-footed free kick, sending the ball narrowly into the right corner of the Vietnam frame.
Vietnamese Keeper To Vinh Loi could only stand still and watch it.
In the 20th minute, midfielder Raheem Sterling doubled the lead for The Citizens with a talented cushion from a distance of 24 meters, driving the ball high into the far corner, while keeper Loi could only stand still again.
Six other goals followed as a result of the elite performance of the world-class players.
A fan named Nguyen Trung Dung said he felt happy even though his national team lost the match, for he could watch elite football.
The biggest round of applause from fans was saved for Van Quyet in the 90th minute of the game, when he scored the only goal for the Vietnamese side.
The big hand was not a consolation, but an appreciation from fans for the efforts and the sportsmanship of their beloved players.
