Inter chairman Zhang fined after calling Serie A chief ‘clown’ for handling of coronavirus

The Chinese businessman was punished for an Instagram rant regarding the decision to play a vital match against Juventus in March.

Inter chairman Steven Zhang has been handed a fine by the Italian football federation for his criticism of Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino over his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Zhang was highly critical of Serie A’s decision to continue matches in March, calling out Dal Pino specifically for disregarding public health.

At the time, the league had announced that Inter’s clash with Juventus, a potential title-decider, would be played on March 8 in what turned out to be the last round of fixtures before the league temporarily shut down due to the coronavirus.

Zhang wrote on his Instagram story: “Playing around the calendar and always putting the public health as secondary consideration.

“You are probably the biggest and darkest clown I have ever seen. 24 hours? 48 hours? 7 days? And what else? What’s your next step?

“And now you speak about sportsmanship and fair competition?

“How about we don’t protect our players or coaches and ask them to play for you 24/7 non-stop?

“Yes, I’m speaking to you. Our Lega President Paolo Dal Pino. Shame on you. It’s time to stand up and take your responsibility! This is what we do in 2020!

“Everybody around the world, doesn’t matter if you are Inter fan or Juve fan or no fan at all. Please be safe!

“This is the most important thing for you, your family, and our society.”

Inter went on to lose the match 2-0, with Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala firing the eventual champions to victory, moving them one step closer to the title.

And, in addition to the defeat on the day, Zhang and Inter have now been hit with sanctions for the chairman’s pre-game rant.

Zhang has been ordered to pay an €8,000(£7,400/$9,400) fine while the club will also be required to pay a fine of  €5,000 (£4,600/$5,900).

The 28-year-old businessman became the youngest ever chairman of Inter in 2018, having been instrumental in Suning Holdings Group’s acquisition of Inter in 2016.

Suning Holdings Group owns 68.55 per cent of the Nerazzurri.

Inter finished last season second in Serie A and will begin play this weekend against Fiorentina.

‘He had no chance’ – Haaland enjoys penalty mind games in Dortmund win

The young Norwegian star struck twice in his first Bundesliga game of the season and is as confident as ever.

Erling Haaland has picked up where he left off last season as he scored twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach and showed his mental strength from the spot.

In Dortmund’s first Bundesliga game of the season,  Giovanni Reyna opened the scoring in the 35th minute before winning a penalty early in the second half.

After VAR intervention to award the spot-kick, Haaland stepped up and made no mistake with a low effort to the bottom left.

The Norway star then wrapped up the victory in the 77th minute as he chipped over Yann Sommer after being sent through on goal by Jadon Sancho.

Speaking after the match, Haaland joked about Sommer’s failed attempt to put him off from the spot and expressed his joy at playing in front of fans again.

“It was a nice penalty and it was very nice to score against Sommer,” Haaland told Bundesliga. “He tried to get into my mind but he had no chance…it was a nice minute there!

“It’s a good result for us. I’m happy that it’s all underway again, especially with 10,000 fans in the stadium. It felt unbelievable to have them back there. They supported us, and we needed that today.

“They gave us an extra boost, and it was obviously fantastic to score a goal in front of them.”

Reyna, dubbed ‘The American Dream’ by Haaland, scored his first Bundesliga goal in the match and is still just 17.

Alongside Haaland, Sancho and Jude Bellingham, Reyna makes up a lethal, youthful quartet looking to fire Dortmund to silverware this season.

“It was a very good start to the season. We have a lot of young players, it’s really enjoyable,” Reyna said post-match.

“We all have so much energy, but we need to keep working, we need to improve even more. We were so happy to see that some of our fans could be there again. That’s very important for us as players.”

Dortmund manager Lucien Favre is also savouring the prospect of using the club’s talented youngsters this season.

“I like working with young players, but of course I like working with experienced ones too,” Favre said.

“The variety is really good, that was there to see in our 3-0 win today. Mats plays the ball forward, and Jadon and Erling sprint the length of the pitch. It was a brilliant goal at the end.

“The variety gives us a great feeling. We’re going to need all of our players over this long season. Now we have to analyse the match before picking things up next week.”

Over to you, Ed! Man Utd’s pitiful Palace defeat proves Solskjaer needs new signings ASAP

The fans’ frustration over a lack of activity in the transfer market has now turned to fury after a dismal 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

“Our approach will be about fine-tuning what we can do better this season,” Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wrote in his programmes notes ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. “And we know what areas we’re looking to improve upon.”

Going by their performance in a chastening 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford, he’ll be looking for improvement all over the pitch.

There are mitigating circumstances, of course. Participation in the Europa League knockout tournament in Germany deprived United of a proper pre-season, meaning Solskjaer didn’t have much time to work with his players.

However, the last few weeks have also been tinged with transfer frustration away from the training pitch, with No.1 target Jadon Sancho starting the season at Borussia Dortmund, and other possible solutions to United’s lack of depth signing for rival clubs.

That fan frustration is now certain to be replaced with fury, after a terribly flat display resulted in United losing their Premier League opener for the first time since 2014 – Louis van Gaal’s first game in charge.

United’s passing was sloppy, their movement slow and the defence all over the place.

When they came back after the restart, they attacked with a panache that struck fear into even the best defences in England but, on Saturday, they rarely troubled Roy Hodgson’s side.

A right-sided attacker remains Solskjaer priority before the transfer window closes on October 5 and the onlooking Ed Woodward was shown exactly why against Palace, as Daniel James was hauled off after 45 forgettable minutes.

The 22-year-old is deemed a good back-up option for Marcus Rashford down the left-hand side but he struggles on the opposite flank.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who started at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka only returning to training on Monday, linked up with James 12 times in the first half – more than any other partnership on the pitch.

However, the duo failed to create anything of note, so it was no surprise to see James replaced by Mason Greenwood for the second half.

Right wing isn’t the only position in which United want to strengthen, of course. Their obvious vulnerability in defence was laid bare just seven minutes into the game.

At almost the exact moment Tottenham announced the arrival of Sergio Reguilon – a player United had considered signing – Luke Shaw was beaten to a cross from Jeffrey Schlupp by Andros Townsend, who fired the visitors ahead with a back-post finish.

Victor Lindelof, who has been heavily criticised in his three seasons at the club, was also at fault in the build-up, as he allowed Schlupp to get by him far too easily.

Shaw and Lindelof weren’t the only poor performers, though. Paul Pogba, who was said to be fully fit and “raring to go”, was lax in possession, making unforced errors all over the pitch, while the usually imperious Bruno Fernandes was ineffective.

United improved somewhat after the break, thanks to the introduction of Greenwood, and they were certainly unfortunate with some of the VAR decisions that went against them.

By the letter of the law, the visitors were rightly awarded a penalty in the 74th minute, after Jordan Ayew’s shot bounced onto Lindelof’s arm, but it only further highlighted the harshness of the new rules.

The decision to order a retake of the subsequent penalty, which was saved by David de Gea, because the Spanish goalkeeper had stepped marginally off his line was plain farcical, with former United defender and current Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville left particularly incensed by both calls.

The net result, though, was Wilfried Zaha succeeding where Jordan Ayew had failed, leaving United were left with a mountain to climb.

Donny van de Beek gave the hosts a glimmer of hope, by coolly converting a loose ball in the area to make his debut with a goal, but Zaha sealed a deserved victory for Palace by easily brushing aside Lindelof before firing low into the bottom corner of De Goal’s net.

It was yet another reminder as to why United so desperately need to sign a top-class centre-half before deadline day.

The onus is certainly on Solskjaer to get more out of the players at his disposal but this dismal defeat hammered home the point that his employers need to act decisively and swiftly in the transfer market.

Time is already running out and this latest VAR controversy shouldn’t be allowed to distract from the fact that this United squad is in dire need of strengthening.

Over to you, Ed…

Bayern star Sane ‘a little sorry’ to thrash former side Schalke by eight goals

The former Man City man scored on a winning debut for his new side, which came at the expense of the club where he began his pro career.

Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane has admitted he was “a little sorry” to play a part in an  8-0 thrashing of former side Schalke on the opening day of the Bundesliga season.

The reigning champions were in scintillating form against a hapless Schalke on Friday, storming into a 3-0 lead by half-time thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka and a Robert Lewandowski penalty.

It got even better for Bayern after the interval as Gnabry completed a hat-trick before Thomas Muller, Sane and 17-year-old Jamal Musiala completed Schalke’s misery.

Sane – making his debut following his July move from Manchester City – felt he slotted in seamlessly with his new team-mates and was pleased with their appetite for goals.

“It felt very good to be on the pitch with the boys,” Sane said. “It was a very good day. I feel completely at ease and knew that it would work out well with the team. Everyone was hungry. Everyone just wanted to attack and give full throttle.”

Sane started his professional career at Schalke before his move to the Premier League in 2016 and he admitted to feeling sympathetic towards his former side after such a crushing defeat.

“Of course, I was at Schalke for a long time,” he added. “To get such a defeat at the start of the season and it goes so haywire is difficult. I’m of course a little sorry.”

Schalke have now failed to win in their last 17 Bundesliga games, with head coach David Wagner left to rue his side’s “naive” approach against the domestic and European champions.

“That was bad,” Wagner said. “We didn’t play well; Bayern were outstanding. We have to shake ourselves now, accept this bitter defeat and show the reaction against Werder Bremen that we expect of ourselves.

“It was naive that we wanted to continue going forward after the fourth or fifth goal.”

Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick said his side’s demolition of Schalke should serve as a benchmark for the rest of the campaign.

Liverpool to complete £45m signing of Diogo Jota from Wolves as Reds ramp up summer spending

The Portuguese international forward has agreed a five-year deal and will follow Thiago Alcantara in moving to the Premier League champions.

Liverpool are set to complete the £45million (€49m/$58m) signing of Diogo Jota from Wolves, Goal can confirm.

The Portuguese international forward has agreed a five-year deal at Anfield, and will become the second signing of a remarkable week for the Premier League champions.

On Friday, Liverpool confirmed the £27m (€30m/$35m) arrival of midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, the Spaniard putting pen-to-paper on a four-year contract as he takes over the No.6 jersey from the departed Dejan Lovren.

And the Reds will now follow up that capture by adding Jota, the 23-year-old who has made a big impact since moving to Wolves in 2017.

Able to play in a variety of positions across the front line, the former Atletico Madrid man is seen as the ideal signing to provide cover for Liverpool’s established front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Jota has scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for Wolves, and has impressed Klopp with his work-rate, determination and flexibility when the sides have met previously.

Liverpool have moved quickly to secure the deal having deemed another target, Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, too expensive.

The Reds were keen on a deal for the Senegal winger, who scored twice to condemn them to their first league defeat of last season back in February, but were reluctant to meet the Hornets’ £40m (€44m/$52m) asking price and thus decided to turn their attention to Jota.

Sources have told Goal that the deal will be worth a guaranteed £41m (€45m/$53m) but that, crucially, Wolves have agreed to flexible payment terms which will see Liverpool pay as little as 10 per cent of that figure over the next 12 months.

Much of that will be offset by the transfer of defender Ki-Jana Hoever, who is moving to Wolves from Liverpool. The 18-year-old is highly-rated at Anfield, but was keen to play first-team football and, with Neco Williams having moved ahead in the pecking order at right-back, the decision has been taken to let the Dutch youth international leave.

The deal, sources say, is worth a total of £13.5m (€15m/$17.5m), with £9m (€10m/$11.6m) guaranteed, and the rest in add-ons. Liverpool have also negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

Juventus and Atletico Madrid are understood to have enquired as to Hoever’s availability this summer, but Liverpool believe Wolves, with their 3-4-3 system under Nuno Espirito Santo, could provide the perfect fit, footballing-wise, for the former Ajax trainee.

He is unlikely to be the last departure, either. Liverpool are keen to offload goalkeeper Loris Karius and winger Harry Wilson, while both Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are interested in signing promising striker Rhian Brewster, 21, on a permanent deal.

Marko Grujic is another expected to leave, though Liverpool are reluctant to sanction another loan move for the Serbian international. Ben Woodburn and Kamil Grabara will depart on loan, and could be joined by the likes of Herbie Kane, Taiwo Awoniyi and Anderson Arroyo.

It is the incomings, though, which will excite supporters. The arrivals of Thiago and Jota, coupled with the capture of left-back Kostas Tsimikas earlier in the summer, mean the reigning champions have addressed key areas of their squad ahead of what will be an arduous campaign.

Their total transfer outlay is now in excess of £70m (€76m/$91m), though they will hope to recoup the bulk of that through sales.

Neymar banned for two games following PSG-Marseille brawl

Neymar has been banned for two games for his part in the brawl at the end of the Ligue 1 game between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille.

The Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille ended in a mass brawl

The Brazilian was one of five players sent off in a last-minute brawl at the Parc des Princes after striking Alvaro Gonzalez in the back of the head, having had several incidents with the Spanish defender previously in the game.

Neymar also has a third game under a suspended sentence, with Leandro Paredes given the same punishment.

PSG full-back Layvin Kurzawa will serve a six-game suspension after he kicked Jordan Amavi, who himself has been banned for three games with Marseille team-mate Dario Benedetto receiving a one-match ban.

Marseille’s Houssem Aouar has also received a one-match suspension.

For his part in the incident, Angel Di Maria will appear before a disciplinary committee on September 23.

Neymar was heard on pitchside microphones informing the fourth official he had heard a racist comment while walking off the pitch and later accused Gonzalez of racism on Twitter, urging the authorities to use VAR to clarify matters.

Gonzalez strenuously denied the allegations but has been placed under investigation by the LFP.

In a statement released on Monday, Neymar claimed he hit out at Gonzalez after realising match officials “would not do anything”.

“I am black, the son of a black man, the grandson and great-grandson of black men,” he said in an Instagram post. “I’m proud and do not see myself as different from anyone else.

“Yesterday, I wanted those in charge of the game (referees and assistants) to be impartial and understand there is no place for such prejudice.”

Thiago says leaving Bayern for Liverpool ‘most difficult decision’

Thiago Alcantara has bid an emotional farewell to Bayern Munich as he closes in on a move to Liverpool.

The Spain international will have his medical on Merseyside on Friday and the PA news agency understands he will complete the formalities on a four-year deal, for an initial £20million fee, later in the day.

“I have made the most difficult decision of my sports career,” said the midfielder in a video posted on Twitter.

“I will close this chapter on this wonderful club where I have grown as a player for seven years. Triumphs, joy and also hard times.

“But what I am most proud of is that I arrived in Munich as a young man filled with dreams and now I will leave completely fulfilled with a club, a history and a culture.

“Here I learned to love a tradition that I am now saying goodbye to, but which I will never forget.

“I have experienced fantastic moments: in this city….with my Bavarian family who treated me so well and loved me every second.

“My decision is purely of a sporting nature. As a soccer player I want new challenges to develop myself further.

“Bavaria will always be my home. Thank you FC Bayern.”

‘Greenwood’s an 18-year-old kid who needs managing’ – Solskjaer slams England & Southgate

The Manchester United boss was unhappy that the teenager was called up for Three Lions duty after a long season with barely any break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has criticised Gareth Southgate and the Football Association for calling up Mason Greenwood to the England squad after Manchester United asked for him to be rested.

Greenwood earned his first senior call up for the Nations League fixtures earlier this month and came off the bench for his debut in the win against Iceland.

The 18-year-old then landed himself in hot water after breaking Covid-19 rules by meeting two girls, with Phil Foden, in the team hotel, resulting in both players being sent home from the camp early.

United criticised Greenwood’s behaviour in a statement after the event – with the forward also apologising himself – although Solskjaer believes his player should never have been put in a position where that could have happened.

The Red Devils boss told reporters: “The kid had a fantastic season, he’s just come through, we’ve worked really hard to give Mason enough time on the pitch, exposure in the media.

“Then you come to the end of the season and we’ve had less than two weeks off an he’s called up. I tried my best to give him a rest over the summer.

“We asked specifically that he should have had a rest, he needs it mentally and physically and first thing that happens he’s called up and he’s right there in the press. We’ve done what we can to protect him, I’ve done what I can to help him, when he comes back into the daily routine he’ll be fine.”

The teenager was required to train alone when he returned to the club’s Carrington training base due to Covid restrictions but has been back in full training and is in contention to play against Crystal Palace.

“This is where he feels at home, not comfortable, we challenge him, he’s got people looking after him. had a plan with him throughout the season and it worked really well,” Solskjaer added.

“He needed a rest. I looked at the interview (Greenwood’s England press conference) and he’s talking about maybe looking back at this season when it’s over. And that’s actually on the first day of his new season. We have to understand he’s an 18-year-old kid who needs managing.”

‘Real Madrid is my dream’ – Pochettino clarifies Barcelona stance as he discusses his future

The former Spurs manager has revealed he never saw himself coaching the Catalans while their current president remains in charge.

Mauricio Pochettino said he did not receive an offer to coach La Liga giants Barcelona, while the former Tottenham boss insisted leading Real Madrid is his dream.

Pochettino was linked with Barca following Quique Setien’s sacking before the embattled Spanish powerhouse opted for Ronald Koeman after a trophy-less 2019-20 campaign.

Argentine manager Pochettino, who departed Tottenham in November last year, was asked about the Barca speculation.

“They didn’t offer me to coach Barca,” he told  Marca . “I didn’t see myself with [president Josep Maria] Bartomeu.

“I did eat with Ramon Planes because we have a friendship for many years, since 2009 when he signed for Espanyol.”

Pochettino had opened the door to potentially coaching Barca , having previously suggested he would not take charge at Camp Nou due to his links with rivals Espanyol.

“I was ironic then,” Pochettino reflected. “It was my first news conference at Tottenham and they asked me about the Barca rumours. Then I answered with my irony and I think I went too far, I said what I said.

“It sounds very nice for the radical Espanyol fan but I did not want to speak for that radical fan. Nor do I have to justify any statement because no one can question my love for Espanyol.”

Pochettino has also been linked with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-GermainSerie A champions Juventus and Inter heading into the 2020-21 season.

Thomas Tuchel remains in charge of PSG, Juve turned to Andrea Pirlo and Inter have opted to continue with Antonio Conte.

“Neither PSG, nor Juventus, nor Inter Milan [made offers in the off-season],” Pochettino added. “I did have a call from Benfica and Monaco. I have no need to lie.”

Pochettino shunned Madrid in 2018, deciding to honour his contract with Premier League side Tottenham at the time.

Madrid attempted to hire Pochettino as Zinedine Zidane’s successor and asked about Los Blancos again, the 48-year-old said: “I don’t know if I’ll ever coach Madrid, but of course it’s my dream.

“If it’s not the best it’s one of the best clubs in the world. I’m no different, everyone has it on their dream list.”
