Ancelotti ‘evaluating’ Modric and Kroos partnership

The Italian says he will persist playing the pair together but may experiment with several of the other midfielders at his disposal if he feels the need to do so

2

Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he is “evaluating” the midfield partnership between Luka Modric and Real Madrid new-boy Toni Kroos following the club’s poor start to the season.

Madrid spent €20 million on bringing Kroos to the Santiago Bernabeu from Bayern Munich over the summer, while sanctioning the exit of Xabi Alonso in the opposite direction later in the transfer window.

That decision was greeted with widespread surprise and so far the partnership between Modric and the Germany star has failed to spark into life as the club have stumbled to two defeats in their opening three La Liga games.

“I do not think we need to change anything right now, but we are evaluating this,” Ancelotti told reporters on Friday.

“We have many games until October 5 and we will rotate with both. There are players like Medran, who was with us in pre-season or Marcos Llorente, but the midfield is covered with (Asier) Illarramendi, Isco and Sami Khedira, who will return.”

The former of that trio, Illarramendi, was signed from Real Sociedad last summer and seen as the eventual successor to Alonso’s deep-lying midfield role, only to struggle for playing time under Ancelotti, despite the Italian insisting he remains a big fan of the Spaniard.

“I have confidence in him and I think he will improve as the season continues as he did last season.”

Chicharito reveals Ronaldo bond

The Mexico striker says the Portugal captain has been a big help in his first few weeks at the Santiago Bernabeu

1

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo has helped him to settle at Real Madrid in his early weeks since joining the club.

The Mexico striker arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United and instantly struck up a rapport with the Portugal star as he finds his feet in Spain.

“Cristiano has treated me very well,” Hernandez told AS.

“We can discuss many things that we have in common, but believe me, as in Manchester, every player in the squad is supportive and makes you feel welcome.

“The great thing about the best teams in the world is that every player is aware he is surrounded by the world’s best players and so we all pull together.”

Hernandez found himself surplus to requirements under David Moyes at Man United last season and couldn’t force his way into Louis van Gaal’s plans this term either, though he insists he is upbeat over his future.

“My future is uncertain, but look where I am. I’m playing with the best squad in Europe and I have a fantastic opportunity. I will work and give my best for this club. I’m very content.”

North Korea took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game, even though Vietnam staged a ‘heavy defensive’ formation.
Midfielder Kim Yun Mi broke into the Vietnamese box and opened the scoring after a devilish shot from close range.
Five minutes later, the midfielder doubled the lead with another close-range goal.
Striker Kim Un Ha headed the ball to set up Kim Yun Mi in a favorable position in the box and she did not miss the chance to convert for her second goal of the match.
In the 21st minute, North Korea were awarded a penalty shot, and striker Kin Un Ju brought the score to 3-0.
Four minutes before the break, Ri Yeg Yong netted the fourth goal following a pass by Ra Un Sim.
In the second half, the North Korean side intentionally slowed down the tempo of the match and scored only one more goal, in the 88th minute, from a penalty kick by Jong Yuri.
Vietnam conceded a total of three penalty shots during the game, but the attempt by Kim Un Ju in the 27th minute was blocked by Vietnamese goalkeeper Kieu Trinh.
Despite the loss, the Vietnamese women still have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals if they beat Hong Kong on September 23. Group C has only three teams.
A total of 11 teams in three groups are taking part in the women’s football competition at the 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014.

Iran boss impressed by Vietnam spirit in Asian Games defeat

Iran coach Nelo Vingada was disappointed by his team’s 1-4 defeat against Vietnam during their men’s football (soccer) opener at the 17th Asian Games on Monday, but was impressed by their rivals’ spirit in the game.

Iran coach Nelo Vingada speaks during a press conference after their men’s football (soccer) opener against Vietnam at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon on September 15, 2014.

Iran coach Nelo Vingada speaks during a press conference after their men’s football (soccer) opener against Vietnam at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon on September 15, 2014.

Vingada was dazzled by the style of play and strong spirit of the under-23 Vietnamese players, the Iran boss said at the post-match press conference.
The Portuguese coach added that he was not shocked by the under-23 Iranian men’s loss, as he had predicted prior to the game that they could lose.
The Vietnamese players outplayed their Iranian rivals, Vingada admitted.
Vietnam, considered the underdogs in the clash with the gold medal favorites, took a 2-0 lead in the first half and scored two more goals in the second to seal a victory that was unexpected to Vietnamese fans and the press.
Iran managed to reduce the lead to 1-2 in the 63rd minute after a penalty shot, but failed to manage a comeback win.
Vingada said that at certain points his men could have done more to win from behind after the penalty goal by captain Mosalman Mohsen.
But the Vietnamese players had such a strong spirit that they played even better after that goal, he added.
Substitute Phi Son lifted the score to 3-1 with a well-taken goal 23 minutes after the break, and Hoang Thinh sealed it 4-1 for Vietnam in the 82nd minute after his free kick struck an Iranian defender and rebounded into the goal frame.
The Iran coach admitted that his players lost their temper toward the end of the match because “they are too young.”
Vingada also praised goalkeeper Buu Ngoc, striker Mac Hong Quan and the Vietnamese defenders. These players totally outperformed his men when it came to fighting for the ball, the Portuguese coach said.
Vietnam’s coach, Toshiya Miura, said he was also astonished by his players’ performance.
The Japanese-born coach said he did believe the team would win, but was stunned to see his men adapt to a new formation so quickly.
Many South Korean reporters also expressed their amazement at Vietnam’s triumph over Iran at the press conference after the match.
They questioned coach Miura as to what he had done to the Vietnamese men, to which he replied that it was speed and stamina training that mattered.
Without stamina and fitness, Vietnam would have seen Iran equalize the match in the second half, the coach said.
The Vietnamese will play their last Group H game against Kyrgyzstan on September 22, while Iran will take on that same team on September 18.
The two teams with the most points in the three-team group will advance to the round of 16, scheduled to begin on September 25.
Twenty-nine teams are playing in the men’s football event. Group A to Group E have four teams each, while Group F, G and H each consists of three teams.

Vietnam are considered the underdogs in their opening Group H match against Iran at the 2014 Asian Games on Monday, according to Toshiya Miura, coach of the Vietnamese side.

Under-23 players will clash against one another in this match at 3:00 pm (Vietnam time) at the Games, being held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4.
“I don’t know much about the Iranian team, but they are a force in Asia and I believe they are stronger than Vietnam,” Miura said.
The Vietnamese men will try their best in the encounter with Iran, he added. The clash will be a chance to assess the ability and strength of the Vietnamese side, the Japanese-born coach said.
Vietnam beat Bangladesh 4-2 in a friendly game last Wednesday in South Korea.
In the meantime, Portuguese coach Nelo Vingada, who leads the Iran squad, said he has learned a lot about his rivals.
Vietnamese footballers are swift and fast, but it seems that they do not have the advantage in fitness and strength, Vingada remarked.
The team that can best use their advantage will win in the upcoming confrontation, he added.
Miura’s men, however, possess another advantage, which is their Japanese coach, Vingada said, further explaining that any Japanese coach is a dangerous rival in tactics and in preserving morale during a game.

At the 2010 Asian Games in China, the Vietnamese under-23 football team lost to Iran 0-1 in the group stage.
Besides Vietnam and Iran, Kyrgyzstan fills out Group H in the draw.
Vietnam has sent a delegation of 199 athletes and 99 officials to the 2014 Asian Games. The athletes will compete in 21 sports.
The 17th edition of the Asian Games is the largest sporting competition in Asia, featuring 439 events in 36 sports.

Vietnam’s U-19 team fans damage national football office

The national football governing body only announced publicly yesterday that they had run out of tickets for the final game, even though large crowd had been in front of the VFF office since the previous night.

A fan reacts outside the Vietnam Football Federation office after he knew that tickets to watch the Nutifood Cup’s final game are sold out

The VFF had neither publicly announced the sellout on local media, nor posted a notice in front of the office.

Instead, VFF staff members simply went out in person and told fans that they had run out of tickets, said Ngo Phuc, who queued up at 10:00pm right after the semifinal game on Sept.11.

Newcomers kept arriving, swelling the crowd into the thousands, without knowing that there were no more tickets left.

In the mean time, tickets are still available on the black market, with prices increased by up to 30 times their normal price.

The most expensive ticket distributed by the VFF is VND100,000 (US$4.8), but these were going for VND3 million ($144) on the black market.

Some fans reported that guards at My Dinh received VND200,000 – 500,000 (US$9.6 – 24) to let fans who didn’t have tickets enter the stadium on the day of the semifinal match between Vietnam and Myanmar.

VFF chairman Le Hung Dung admitted that the issue has caused a headache.

“The stadium has only 40,000 seats, but the number of fans who are willing to pay to enter is many times higher.”

Recently, local fans have put all their faith in the national U-19 team, most of whom are trainees of the Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG football academy, since the national football squad has been marred by match fixing and violence.
