Van Persie: I want to stay at Man United

Robin van Persie has insisted he wants to stay with Manchester United.

1200259-25077397-640-360

Recent speculation has linked the Dutch international with a move away from Old Trafford, suggesting he is unhappy.
However, Van Persie has refuted the rumours and claimed he would be happy to sign a new deal with the Barclays Premier League champions. His current contract runs until summer 2016.
He told United Review, the club’s official programme: ” I don’t mind if my performances get dissected and people criticise what I’ve done on the pitch. They can talk about my game 24/7 for all I care…and a lot of those opinions and criticisms may actually be right. So I don’t mind that.
“What I need to address are the situations when people are taking it upon themselves to think for me, make assumptions, or interpret things as if they are me.
“Last time I checked my head was still attached to my body, so I’m the only one who knows exactly what I’m feeling and that is not what I or the fans have been reading.
“The truth is I’m very happy here at this club. I signed for four years and I’d be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract.
“This is how I feel, although it’s not what has been suggested in the media.”

Benfica boss Jesus loses head after taking 3-1 lead at Spurs

It’s difficult to be diplomatic when talking about Jorge Jesus as a man.
‘Prickly’ is probably the most suitable term we could use to describe the Portuguese.
Jesus does not share his historical namesake’s patience; he is a bit of a hothead, and has a moody streak that Portuguese fans are well aware of.
He also is unlikely to be on Tim Sherwood’s Christmas card list after a provocative, disrespectful and entirely unnecessary three-fingered gesture after his Benfica side made it 3-1 in their Europa League last-16 first leg at White Hart Lane:

Benfica taught Spurs a thing or two about European football, but Jesus needs to learn a thing or two about manners.

Say what you like about Sherwood but he is a young, honest coach in his first senior management job.
Benfica – and Jesus – have won plenty of titles, and were beaten finalists in the same competition last year.
Jesus should know better and, presuming his gesture was made in the heat of the moment, should have apologised to Sherwood instead of continuing with a verbal tirade.
Indeed, Jesus’ own staff remonstrated with their boss after the incident, and he responded by shoving and bawling at them.
Coming face-to-face with Sherwood though, he turned away. Wonder why that is?
There was no love lost at the final whistle as both men pointedly ignored each other. Needless to say there was no handshake.

Ronaldo in astonishing gesture as he pays for the operation of 10-month old baby

Erik Ortiz Cruz suffers up to 30 epileptic fits a day and surgery is the only solution to his condition.
The boy’s family have been unable to meet massive hospital bills with each test carried out costing around £5,020 (6,000 euros) and surgery likely to run to £50,240 (60,000 euros).

So big-hearted Ronaldo, touched by the boy’s local community’s attempts to raise the money themselves, has stepped in to fund the life changing medical care.
The player was at first asked to donate boots and a shirt to a fund-raising auction but decided to go the extra mile and foot the bill.
Earlier in the year Ronaldo celebrated his Ballon D’Or win with children suffering from Leukaemia keeping a promise made on Spanish radio last year.
Ronaldo met the children on radio Cope show Partido de la 12 in November and said if he won he would celebrate with them.
Following the celebrations he spoke to one of the children – who will have an operation this month – and told the youngster: ‘Don’t worry I have not forgotten’.

Barcelona duo dash City’s UCL title dreams

Lionel Messi and Dani Alves both scored again as Barcelona claimed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Manchester City.

478205837

The pair, who both struck in the 2-0 first-leg win, were on target in the second half at the Nou Camp as Barca completed a 4-1 aggregate win.
City were briefly level at 1-1 after a late Vincent Kompany effort but it proved mere consolation for the visitors, who had Pablo Zabaleta sent off for two bookable offences.
History repeated itself in many ways. It was not only in the identity of the Barcelona goalscorers and the City’s reduction to that the game mirrored the first encounter.
Just as in Manchester, there were a number of controversial decisions by the referee.
Stephane Lannoy denied Barcelona a penalty and disallowed a goal for the hosts in the first half, while Edin Dzeko had strong spot-kick claims in the second period.
This time City manager Manuel Pellegrini would have to keep his frustration to himself having been handed a touchline ban for comments about the first-leg official.
City deviated from their regular 4-4-2 formation and bulked up midfield by bringing in James Milner.
But with David Silva operating behind lone striker Sergio Aguero, they acknowledged the need to attack.
An early goal would have brought them back into the tie and they started confidently.
Milner broke free down the left and pulled the ball across the box for Silva but the Spaniard declined to shoot and a chance was lost.
City made a better job of breaking up Barcelona’s possession than they did in the last meeting but it was still a tough task and they conceded a number of fouls.
Fernandinho, Aleksandar Kolarov and – critically – Zabaleta were all booked for bad challenges in the first period and all will now miss City’s next game in European competition.
Joleon Lescott, a replacement for the already suspended Martin Demichelis was perhaps lucky to escape a caution as well after bundling over Messi.
The England defender enjoyed even more fortune when he brought Messi down again inside the area after eight minutes.
French referee Lannoy let him off and there was a further reprieve for City when Neymar put the ball into the net only for Jordi Alba to harshly ruled offside.
City had another scare when Messi weaved his way into the area and beat Joe Hart but he moved wide and Kompany cleared.
City applied some pressure but Silva missed the target from the edge of the box.
They escaped again as Neymar deftly headed past Kolarov to open up a chance but his low shot hit the side-netting. Hart then parried a quickfire Xavi shot.
City created a clear-cut chance just before the interval when Silva cleverly flicked back Yaya Toure’s ball but Samir Nasri shot straight at Victor Valdes.
The half ended with Fernandinho heading off the line from Neymar after the Brazilian had been put through following more Messi trickery.
City’s coaching staff – making the decisions with Pellegrini confined to a watching brief – sent on Dzeko for the ineffective Aguero at half-time.
The Bosnian immediately added teeth to the attack and tested Valdes with a powerful strike.
But City were still vulnerable at the back and they again rode their luck when Messi seized possession and slid a fine shot past Hart but against the post.
City chanced their arm more and a well-placed looping header from Dzeko was superbly clawed out of the top corner by Valdes.
Zabaleta also found himself in space as Kolarov crossed but dragged his shot well wide.
Barca sensed the threat and simply upped their game. After firing wide Messi then made no mistake after 67 minutes as he pounced on Lescott’s failed attempt to clear a Cesc Fabregas pass and dinked the ball over Hart.
City tried to fight on but their task became even tougher when Zabaleta was dismissed.
Dzeko charged into the area and had strong claims for a penalty as he went down under a Gerard Pique challenge.
City’s players were furious nothing was given but Zabaleta took his protests too far and was given his marching orders with a second yellow card.
Kompany pulled one back after Dzeko won a header at a corner but it was too little too late and Alves again caught them on the break in the dying moments.

PSG book easy UCL quarter-final spot

Paris St Germain’s quest to win a first Champions League crown moved a step closer as they secured a quarter-final spot with a 6-1 aggregate mauling of Bayer Leverkusen.

478222597

Leading 4-0 from the first leg in Germany, it would have taken a huge upset for PSG not to progress and, despite having a couple of scares, the big-spending French champions did just that with a 2-1 second-leg triumph at the Parc des Princes.
The first scare for Laurent Blanc’s men came when Leverkusen took the lead after just six minutes through Sidney Sam, but the hosts quickly responded with Marquinhos heading them level just seven minutes later.
PSG nerves would have been tingling again just before the half-hour when battling Leverkusen won a penalty.
A goal then could have made things interesting, even though Leverkusen would still have had a massive mountain to climb – but Simon Rolfes saw his spot-kick saved by Salvatore Sirigu and PSG did not look back after that.
Ezequiel Lavezzi put them 2-1 ahead on the night at the start of the second half before Leverkusen lost Emre Can to a red card, ending any slim hopes of a possible upset.
History was against Leverkusen with only two clubs ever having won a tie in the competition after losing at home in the first leg, while Sami Hyypia’s men were also without a win in their previous six matches, losing five.
However, the 2002 Champions League finalists were determined not to go down without a fight and they stunned PSG when Sam gave them an early lead, the Germany international getting on the end of Giulio Donati’s cross to head home at the far post.
PSG, who are still in contention for three trophies in the next few months, did not take long to hit back though, with star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic almost inevitably involved.
He was unlucky not to net the equaliser himself, Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno deflecting his low shot behind with his leg, but from the resulting corner PSG did score with Marquinhos powerfully heading in Yohan Cabaye’s flag kick.
Ibrahimovic then came within inches of putting PSG ahead in the 18th minute when his dink over Leno came back off the crossbar.
PSG seemed to have recovered from that early setback, but they received further warning Leverkusen were not going to roll over as the visitors won a penalty in the 27th minute when Christophe Jallet tugged back Eren Derdiyok.
That was a great chance for Leverkusen to turn the pressure up on PSG, but Sirigu dived to his left to push away Rolfes’ spot-kick and the opportunity was lost.
PSG made sure the escape was not wasted.
Leno denied Edinson Cavani before the break but he was powerless to stop Lavezzi slotting in Lucas Digne’s cut-back in the 53rd minute, the ball going through a group of players on its way into the net to make it 2-1.
Still Leverkusen refused to concede the fight, and Sirigu needed to produce a brilliant save to keep out Gonzalo Castro’s shot two minutes later.
The visitors’ hopes of at least avoiding defeat on the night suffered a major blow in the 68th minute, though, when Can was shown a second yellow card for diving.
Both sides continued to create chances, Derdiyok and PSG duo Javier Pastore and Adrien Rabiot being denied by the respective keepers, but there was never any doubt who was going through.
