Pogba snubbed Arsenal, Chelsea for Juve

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba claims he passed on opportunities to sign for Barclays Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea to join the Serie A champions.

Pogba, who began his professional career at Manchester United, was heavily courted towards the end of the 2011/12 season when it became increasingly apparent he was not going to extend his contract with the English giants.
Regarded as one of the brightest prospects in European football, the Frenchman eventually opted to sign for the Bianconeri and his decision proved to a be a wise one as he was part of the side that won the Scudetto last season.
However, the 20-year-old has since revealed there was plenty of interest in his services from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but insists he only ever thought about joining Juve.
“Sir Alex Ferguson tried to keep me at Manchester United, but he didn’t get very far,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“Other clubs were tracking me but I only had Juve in my mind.
“At the time, I heard from Chelsea, Arsenal and Milan, but nobody is like Juve.”
The all-action midfielder also claimed that part of his decision to join the Turin outfit was his desire to follow in the footsteps of several French greats who have plied their trade for the club, including the likes of Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps.
“Since childhood I’ve always like Juve and supported that team,” Pogba revealed.
“For the French this club means a great deal, as so many French champions played in Turin, so that’s why I liked them.
“I am happy to be here and I want to win many trophies with this jersey.”
Despite his tender years, Pogba has already established himself as an important member of coach Antonio Conte’s squad, despite having to fight with the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal for a spot in the Bianconeri engine room.

My future rests on success this season, says Arsenal boss Wenger as contract talks remain on hold

Arsene Wenger has said his future as Arsenal manager will be determined by the success or failure of a new team built around club record signing Mesut Ozil.

Wenger’s contract expires in June and, on the day he unveiled the £42.5million Germany midfielder, the Arsenal boss said his decision to extend his 17-year-old tenure will be based on whether there is a decent return on the club’s huge investment.

Asked on Thursday if he had opened talks over a new contract, the 63-year-old said: ‘We are in no hurry. We are in September and my contract finishes in June. There’s a long
way to go. There’s no need to plan.

‘I’ve said many times I want to do well with this club and, in the end, I will sit down and think how well have I done with the team I have had. That has to be sufficient for me to decide yes or no.

‘One of the main judgments you can have about a manager is how well he does with his team.’

Ozil believes he can end the club’s eight-season trophy drought and insists his new side can compete for the Barclays Premier League title this season.

After leaving Real Madrid, Ozil insists he does not view his move to north London as a step down.

‘I’m not disappointed. I’m at Arsenal now, which is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

‘Of course I had a very good time in Madrid. I have lots of friends there and (had) lots of very good moments. Now I’m in the strongest league in the world and have to prove myself here to continue developing here. This is why I am at the right club.’

Ozil has also accused Real of disrespecting him as he vowed to end Arsenal’s trophy drought.

Real’s decision to part with Ozil has been criticised in Spain. Large sections of the club’s fans have voiced their disapproval at his departure while many of his former team-mates, including Cristiano Ronaldo, have spoken publicly about their shock at the club’s decision.

Ozil’s father Mustafa said yesterday legal action against Real president Florentino Perez was under review after he questioned the midfielder’s professionalism.

Ozil said: ‘People who know me know how professional I am and I think, in the past years, you can see how many games I played — 159 games. If you’re not professional in your life then I don’t think you can play that many games.

‘All the rumours, I don’t care about them. I have a new task here. I’m just looking ahead. I am in London now. We have big goals here and we will work very hard to reach these goals.

‘I don’t want to say anything bad about Madrid because I had three wonderful years there. We achieved a lot.

‘Why did Madrid let me go? I talked about this in the past. I did not get the respect and trust, it was a bit difficult.

‘When I spoke to Arsene on the phone, he was full of respect and as a player I need that. I feel that here, that is why I came here

‘I want to look ahead. I will have wonderful years here, hopefully I will win many trophies and stay healthy and this is what I look forward to.’

Spurs defender Kyle Walker photographed using ‘hippy crack’

TOTTENHAM defender Kyle Walker has apologised after being photographed inhaling the potentially deadly ‘hippy crack’ party drug.

997908-kyle-walker

Walker, who is in Kiev with the England national team to prepare for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, woke to a photograph of himself in a Sunday newspaper sucking in the substance nitrous oxide on a recent night out in his native Sheffield.

In a statement issued to Sportsmail, Walker said he had let England down.

“I have now been made aware of the health risks associated with the practice and accept that my actions were of poor judgement,” Walker said in a statement issued by Spurs.

“I hope this will in no way influence or encourage others into putting their own health at risk.”

Later, Walker added on Twitter: “Apologies for not commenting sooner on a story about me today. I’ve been training and am focused on Tuesday’s game for England.”

Users of nitrous oxide say the latest craze on the party circuit, the supply of which is illegal though the use is not, produces feelings of euphoria that have been likened to heroin or crack cocaine.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s book could blow apart Wayne Rooney peace process

Manchester United are worried what might be revealed by their former manager – and they’ve every right to be.

The relationship between Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney at Manchester United collapsed last season. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian

A few years ago Manchester United introduced a new rule that stipulated any player writing a book had to run it by the club first. Roy Keane had been banned for a passage on Alfie Haaland’s right knee that read more like a scene from a Guy Ritchie film. Jaap Stam had embarrassed Sir Alex Ferguson with a number of claims, among them that the manager encouraged players to dive. Enough was enough and the message came down from the top of the club that it was time everyone reverted to a bit of reassuring blandness.

Since then, the books emanating from Old Trafford have been vapid, to say the least. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Moments has almost as many photographs as words, like a hardback version of Hello!, Paul Scholes’s autobiography never gets any more controversial than revealing he doesn’t like the team’s blue away kit. Ryan Giggs starts promisingly, with an anecdote about punching Martin Edwards’s son, but quickly settles into the usual formulaic stuff. It is all very different to the days when Stam described the Neville brothers as a pair of “busy cunts”.

Unfortunately for United, Ferguson likes to go by his own rules. His new autobiography, 14 years since the last one, is out on 24 October, with a press conference the previous day to launch it and a tour featuring theatre and music-hall dates in Manchester, Glasgow, London, Aberdeen and Dublin. He might be gone but you will be hearing an awful lot about Ferguson over the next couple of months and it is probably no surprise that at Old Trafford they are wondering whether a storm of locusts is about to head their way. Or that one question, more than any other, is being asked: is Ferguson about to blow apart the Wayne Rooney peace process?

He can hardly ignore what has happened, the breakdown of their relationship, the transfer request, the cow looking into the next field and all that, and when Ferguson makes it his business to get in the final word it is a potent pot of poison in which he dabs his quill. Just ask Gordon Strachan and Brian Kidd, among others, after the literary kicking they took in his 1999 book. Or consider its account of finding out an old Rangers man, Willie Allison, someone he had come to regard as a mortal enemy, had been diagnosed with cancer. “I know it is a terrible thing to say,” Ferguson writes, “but I did not have a crumb of pity for him.”

The less-read 6 Years at United is possibly even more caustic. This is the book, to give you a flavour, in which Ferguson reflects on Emlyn Hughes’s move into the media. “I don’t know anyone in the game who has any time for Emlyn Hughes,” he points out. “He is a disappointing character.” Ferguson talks about Frank Stapleton “bordering on the morose”. Tommy Docherty doesn’t get off lightly either. “We all know about the Doc. He is what he is, a bitter old man.”

It is probably fair to assume that Ferguson’s latest epic, earning him a reputed £2m advance, is going to take up an awful lot of headlines next month and that the list of people he chops down in print will be considerable.

Keane is just one of them, bearing in mind Ferguson has never been through what was said in that infamous, never-seen episode of MUTV’s “Play The Pundit” and the precise reasons he drummed him out of the club. The fall-out with Ruud van Nistelrooy needs an explanation, as does the time Ferguson split open David Beckham’s forehead with a flying boot.

Will Ferguson dare take on John Magnier and JP McManus over the Rock Of Gibraltar affair? It would be a surprise if he goes too far into it. But consider all the words that might have been reserved for, in no particular order, Luis Suárez, Gabriel Heinze, Peter Kenyon, Owen Hargreaves, the Football Association, Mark Bosnich, Manchester City, Martin Atkinson (his least favourite referee), Carlos Tevez, Kia Joorabchian, José Mourinho, Rafael Benítez and many others.

Ferguson has been putting together his memoirs over the past four years. Just don’t expect a forensic deconstruction of the Glazer family’s takeover and any late admission that the fans were right, after all. On the contrary, if he goes after anyone from that saga it will be the supporters who set up FC United of Manchester.

But it is Ferguson’s views on Rooney that threaten the most damage and it is easy to understand why, behind the scenes, United are worried about it undermining David Moyes and creating all sorts of new issues. Rooney, as if it needs recapping, has just spent the summer trying to get a move to Chelsea only for his current employers to make it clear he can think again. Now they are going through the process of trying to convince Rooney he can start enjoying life at Old Trafford again, working on his ego, trying to demonstrate they still value him highly.

The situation is delicate enough without Ferguson providing another round of damaging publicity – but that’s exactly what United expect. At the very least, he has to address the Rooney issue because the alternative is the book losing credibility. But, Fergie being Fergie, it is not a huge assumption to think there will be a warts-and-all version of why he thinks Rooney fell out of love with United and why, on his final day as manager, two men who have shared so many joys ended up looking like strangers on a bus. Paul Stretford, Rooney’s agent, might feature prominently, too, bearing in mind Ferguson has already described him as “not the most popular man” at Old Trafford. And it’s not difficult to imagine why there are people at Old Trafford dreading it. The timing, two months into Ferguson’s first season of retirement, could hardly be much worse. With all the politics that are involved, it is the last thing United – and Moyes – need.

The book promises to be tremendous and he has certainly appointed a superb writer in Paul Hayward to fall in line with the job Hugh McIlvanney completed in 1999. Whatever Ferguson reveals, bear in mind he is not always acknowledged as the most scrupulous truth-teller – Kidd’s response to his pummelling in Managing My Life memorably concluded that “Walt Disney is trying to buy the film rights as a sequel to Fantasia” – but it will be fascinating to know, among other things, whether he did regard Rooney as having fitness, attitude and weight issues, why he brought in Robin van Persie to take over as principal striker and what, in short, went wrong between manager and player.

All good fun for the readers. Not, perhaps, for the people involved. Could Ferguson maybe just have hung on a little bearing in mind Moyes is still feeling his way into the job? The book has certainly been rushed out with remarkable alacrity and Ferguson, lest it be forgotten, created a lot of the problems in the first place by going against everything he said he once stood for and announcing, live on television, that Rooney had been to see him for a private conversation and requested a transfer.

That has always been disputed and United now accept it is not quite how it went. But the damage was done and, all summer, Rooney’s camp have cited Ferguson as the main reason why their player wanted to go, and that he still suspects his former manager has great influence at the club in his new roles as a director and ambassador.

Rooney and Stretford, as this column has already noted, probably need their heads banging together, but they are entitled to wonder whether that television interview in May was Ferguson at his worst.

It is a mess Moyes could easily have been spared and it would certainly be strange, given Ferguson’s affinity to the club and everything he has said about supporting the new manager, if he is about to throw another can of petrol on the flames, then stand back, admiring his work.

Zidane: ‘Incredible’ Bale not worth €100m

The Frenchman has voiced concern at football’s “incomprehensible” transfer fees – including the €75m figure for which he joined Real Madrid in 2001.

312594_heroa

Zinedine Zidane has slammed the world-record fee that Real Madrid forked out for Gareth Bale, stating that no player is worth such a sum.

The Real Madrid assistant coach, who held the title of most expensive footballer on the planet when he moved from Juventus to los Blancos in 2001, believes the €100 million deal for the Wales international is simply one of many “incomprehensible” fees which clubs are willing to pay in the modern game.

“Ten years ago I was bought for €75m and I said I was not worth this,” the World Cup winner told Canal Plus.

“Even now I would think that a player is not worth this. It’s football, unfortunately. It is incomprehensible to pay so much.”

Despite holding reservations about the amount, Zidane is more than happy to have Bale at Santiago Bernabeu and the Frenchman is excited to have the opportunity to work with the former Tottenham star.

“My role will certainly be to explain that he has to play as he knows,” Zidane continued.

“This is a player who has incredible potential, which he has demonstrated over the past three years and he is certainly among the top three players.

“But he can still progress a lot. I think he can bring a lot to Madrid.”

Home comforts for German centurion Lahm

Germany’s Philipp Lahm is ready to relish winning his 100th international cap against Austria, especially as he will celebrate it in his own backyard.

Germany v Greece - UEFA EURO 2012 Quarter Final

The Bayern Munich defender will lead Germany out at the Allianz Arena, which is home to the Bundesliga side he has represented since 2003.
The 29-year-old made his Germany debut on February 18, 2004 – in a 2-1 victory over Croatia in Split -and he is ready to mark a century of caps in familiar surroundings.
“It really has come together incredibly well,” Lahm told fcbayern.telekom.de.
“It’s a special match, and I’m privileged to be playing it in my own backyard, as it were, which is fantastic.”
“My family will be there, lots of my friends are coming, and plenty of acquaintances.
“When I look back to the past and see how many outstanding players didn’t make it to 100 caps, Gerd Muller or Uwe Seeler for example, you realise it’s definitely special when you make it there yourself.”
Germany manager Joachim Low hailed Lahm’s achievements ahead of the landmark.
“For almost 10 years now, Philipp Lahm has epitomised consistency, reliability and the highest standards in the national team,” Low said.
“He has natural authority, he accepts responsibility, he communicates well, and despite our flat hierarchy in the national team, he’s an undisputed leader.
“It’s very special for him to be winning his 100th cap right here in his home city of Munich.”
Germany top Group C with 16 points, with Austria, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland all locked on 11 points and battling it out for the runners-up spot.
Kazakhstan and the Faroe Islands are unable to progress with one and zero points respectively.
Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland face Sweden in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, with the Italian’s assistant Marco Tardelli admitting he is “scared” of the threat that striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic poses.
However, Trapattoni’s number two insists there will be no special strategy to deal with Ibrahimovic, simply because it is impossible to predict the unpredictable.
Tardelli said: “The back four must control him at all times because he is their best player.
“There isn’t a special plan because he is a very strong player. It’s like trying to prepare something for (Cristiano) Ronaldo – Ronaldo decides what he wants to do.
“Focus on the match, focus on Ibrahimovic, it’s okay. But when he decides to do something, it’s impossible to control him.”
Elsewhere, Kazakhstan play the Faroe Islands in Astana as both sides bid to avoid the wooden spoon.

Mourinho happy with balanced Chelsea squad

Jose Mourinho is satisfied Chelsea now have the right balance to make a sustained assault on the Barclays Premier League and Europe this season.

Bayern Muenchen v Chelsea - UEFA Super Cup

The Blues brought in Anzhi Makhachkala duo Willian and Samuel Eto’o as well as Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle ahead of the transfer window deadline, but also allowed Romelu Lukaku to join Everton on loan.

Mourinho feels such strength in depth will serve Chelsea well when they look to continue their promising start to the new season after the international break.

Speaking to Chelsea TV, he said: “We have that (balance in the squad). We have two players per position, with three strikers and an extra midfield player.
“Every position is covered and we are very happy with what we have.”
Mourinho did not sanction Demba Ba’s proposed move to Arsenal following their club-record signing of Mesut Ozil, a player whose talents he knows well from Real Madrid.
However, in Brazilian Willian and veteran forward Eto’o, the Blues manager is confident the club have brought in significant reinforcements.
“Samuel is a very experienced striker as everybody knows and a winner,” Mourinho said.
“He is a guy who in spite of winning everything, he never lost his desire to win.
“Samuel comes to England with the same objective with which I went to Spain – he wants to be the first one to win the Spanish, the Italian and the English league as a player. He always wanted to play in the Premier League so he comes with big motivation.
“He is different from (Fernando) Torres; Torres is different from (Demba) Ba and Ba is different from Eto’o, so we have in these three strikers experience and different qualities. Hopefully it goes well.”
Willian could also have signed for Tottenham before Chelsea’s late move.
Mourinho is in no doubt the player will bring something different to his line-up.
The Blues boss added: “Willian is a creative player and for his qualities, I think he needs a bit of time to express himself.
“He is very creative, fast and dynamic and can play in all three positions behind the striker.
“Again he is a kid that wanted very much to play for Chelsea and he was too many years in Ukraine and in Russia and now he has his first chance to be in a big championship.”
Chelsea have just half-a-dozen English players in the 25-man squad lists for the Premier League and the Champions League which were confirmed today, with Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry no longer at the start of their careers.
Mourinho, who returned to the Stamford Bridge club this summer, sees no reason why Chelsea cannot continue to bring their own talent through the Academy.
“I like that. Of course you can without English players, but I like to have at least a little core of English players,” Mourinho said in an interview with the official Chelsea Magazine.
“If possible – and we have to work for it – I would like to have a little core of English players made in Chelsea Football Club, starting here since young boys. I think a club needs that culture as well.
“The other guys in the Academy, I am starting to know them now. I watch them train; I trained with them and I watched them play.
“So I start knowing these guys and as I said before, it’s not just important to have English players, but also to have players made in this club who learn what it means to be Chelsea.
“They are in our plans and the club is making an investment in them.”
