Arsenal release Andrey Arshavin, Denílson and Sébastien Squillaci

Andrey Arshavin’s unhappy spell at Arsenal has come to an end after the Premier League club announced the Russia captain will be one of three players to leave when their contracts expire on 30 June.

The Brazilian midfielder Denílson and the former France defender Sébastien Squillaci will also be released by Arsenal as the manager, Arsène Wenger, rebuilds his squad ahead of the new season.

Arshavin failed to deliver on his potential following his move to the Emirates Stadium for a reported £15m from Zenit St Petersburg in 2009 and barely featured last season.

Berlusconi wants Kaká back

Silvio Berlusconi has always had a weakness for Kaká and it seems the Italian is prepared to do whatever it takes to bring the Brazilian back to Milan this summer, according to ‘Corriere dello Sport’ sports newspaper.

Berlusconi has allegedly told Galliani to begin negotiations to re-sign the midfielder.

Real Madrid made it clear one year ago that the club was not prepared to let the player go out on loan, meaning that Milan will have to splash the cash for the Brazilian’s transfer.

Michael Ballack: a nearly man or an undisputed midfield genius?

The former Chelsea and Germany midfielder says farewell to football in Leipzig on Wednesday – but what will his legacy be?

Michael Ballack

On Wednesday night, in Leipzig, a former international will say goodbye to football. He won four Bundesliga titles and three German Cups. He won the Premier League title with Chelsea and three FA Cups. He represented Germany 98 times and was their captain for several years. Yet, somehow, Michael Ballack will perhaps always be seen as a loser.

There was an arrogance about Ballack that – as he missed out on one major title after another – led to a lack of sympathy. The 2002 Champions League final, with Bayer Leverkusen, was lost to Real Madrid. A month later, Ballack almost singlehandedly took Germany to the World Cup final but, suspended, had to watch from the stands as Brazil won 2-0. Four years later, Germany lost to Italy after extra-time in the World Cup semi-final and in 2008 he was part of the Chelsea team that missed out on the Champions League final to Manchester United on penalties.

In Germany, he has been described as an unvollendeter, an unfulfilled person. It seems harsh. As Udo Muras wrote so brilliantly for Die Welt this week, Ballack was “the lone shining light in a leaden era”. He was never, wrote Muras, allowed to play a quick one-two with Mario Götze or Marco Reus. Instead he had Torsten Frings and Carsten Jancker as team-mates for the nationalmannschaft.

Can he really be castigated for not having won the Champions League with players such as Paolo Rink and Fabian Ernst, and is it really his fault that John Terry slipped on the turf that night in Moscow and missed his penalty? Of course not.

Ballack was born in Görlitz in GDR in 1976. By the time the Berlin Wall fell he was playing for Chemnitzer FC and was still with the eastern German club when he was picked for the Germany Under-21 team in 1996. Two years later, Otto Rehhagel handpicked him to join the newly promoted Kaiserslautern side, which went on to stun the country by winning the title on their return to the Bundesliga.

Three amazing years at Bayer Leverkusen followed, but the team was dubbed “Neverkusen” after, in 2002, finishing second to Dortmund in the Bundesliga, losing the German Cup final to Schalke and then the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Ballack moved on, joining Bayern Munich, where he stayed for four years. He has said that that last season in Bavaria, in 2005-06, he was at his absolute best, feeling unstoppable in every game.

After that season, he arrived in London. He stayed with Chelsea for four years and has only fond memories of his time there. “Looking back it was a really successful and cool time,” he told the German football magazine 11Freunde in January. “London is a brilliant city. I was accepted by my team-mates, even though I had to work hard in the beginning.

“I was looking forward to going to training and I got to know some great people. The lost Champions League final is just one moment that is hiding behind a lot of happy memories.”

Ballack remembers having to sing the German song “Du entschuldige I kenn di” at his Chelsea initiation. “It wasn’t too embarrassing, they didn’t understand a word I was singing after all. And I only needed to sing the first verse as I was so poor that they started throwing napkins at me.

“Still, Sheva had it a lot worse. He did We Are The Champions, which they all understood. He’d hardly started before the napkins came flying.”

At Chelsea, Ballack played for José Mourinho – who is reportedly going to be at the game on Wednesday to pay tribute to Ballack while also trying to tie up a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s André Schürrle with the German club’s sporting director, Rudi Völler – but it was also while at Chelsea that he suffered the injury that was the beginning of the end of his career.

A horrible tackle by Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng in the FA Cup final in 2010 destroyed Ballack’s ankle and ruled him out of that summer’s World Cup. Germany went to South Africa without their “Capitano” – and played brilliantly on their way to the semi-finals. Maybe he should have seen the end coming after he was slapped by his team-mate Lukas Podolski in a game against Wales the year before.

In 2010, Ballack returned to Leverkusen but back at the club where he shot to fame, he struggled. “As you know I had worked with a lot of great managers and have got on really well with them,” he told 11Freunde. “They gave me the feeling they were building a team around me. And that is why I was surprised that this was no longer the case at Leverkusen [with Jupp Heynckes and Robin Dutt].

At Leverkusen, Ballack’s career died a slow and painful death. With Germany, he also struggled to adapt as Philipp Lahm was made captain. Ballack later fell out with Joachim Löw and suddenly the midfielder was a leader with no team to lead. It is perhaps symptomatic of Ballack’s career that when Germany offered him a farewell game against Brazil and the chance to reach 100 caps, he labelled it “a farce”.

“The style and content of [Löw’s] statement are unfortunately exactly the way he has treated me since my serious injury last summer,” Ballack said. “To call a friendly match that was arranged long ago a farewell match is a farce in my opinion. I know I owe my fans this match but I cannot accept the offer.”

Ballack played on with Leverkusen until the end of the 2011-12 season and toyed with the idea of playing in the United States or even Australia, but eventually announced his retirement in October last year.

“Titles are sometimes overrated,” he said after retiring. “Of course Lothar Matthäus is always going to be associated with the 1990 World Cup. But does everyone immediately remember what titles Günter Netzer, Johan Cruyff or Luís Figo won? Or do they also think about how those players played their football and how they led their teams? I hope that people will remember me as a special footballer.”

And in the future, with a little more hindsight, we may be able to focus a bit more on Ballack the player rather than all those near-misses. He probably deserves it.

U23 team battle to deserved draw

Viet Nam’s under-23 team shared the spoils with Japan’s Kashima Antlers yesterday in the capital’s My Dinh Stadium, with their friendly match ending 2-2.

In the build-up, the game had been billed as an important step in Viet Nam’s preparations for approaching international tournaments, with many players being given a chance to impress new coach Hoang Van Phuc and stake their claim to a berth in the main national team.

However, it was the visitors who started the brighter, and the J-League giants dominated possession with their height and physical approach. They had the game’s first chance to open the scoring when Yasushi Endoh headed narrowly wide.

Vietnamese forward Mac Hong Quan responded minutes later, but his fierce shot flew over the crossbar.

Backed by the strong support of thousands of fans, the Vietnamese players slowly began to grow in confidence and get a foothold on proceedings. They started working possession down the channels and exploiting their width, but they still could not trouble the opposition’s goalkeeper Akihiro Sato.

Kashima Antlers also refused to be intimidated, and they were only denied the lead by some heroic goalkeeping from keeper Tran Buu Ngoc.

Five minutes after the break Vu Minh Tuan opened the scoring with a sensational free kick from 25m, sending the home crowd wild.

However their joy was short-lived, with Yuya Osaka grabbing an equaliser just one minute later thanks to a dazzling long run past Viet Nam’s stranded and static defence.

Five minutes later they made it 2-1 for when Osaka provided a perfect pass to Atsutaka Nakamura, who found himself with an abundance of time and space in which to beat Ngoc.

Phuc tried to add more of an attacking threat by bringing on strikers Ha Minh Tuan and Tran Phi Son. It proved an influential switch, with Son instantly causing problems for the Kashima Antlers’s defence.

The equaliser, when it came, was all too easy for the hosts. In the 79th minute, Sato and his defence suffered a major breakdown in communication and the ball was passed straight into the path of substitute Hoang Danh Ngoc, who gratefully accepted the gift and passed the ball into the empty net.

The Vietnamese players pushed for the winner, with Son coming close several times, but the visitors held out and the match ended in a well-fought draw.

Mission Beckham: Tom Cruise promises to make him a film idol

IT might sound like Mission Impossible. But Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise is said to have made his friend David Beckham a solemn pledge to help him secure a role on the big screen.

The three-times Oscar- nominated star, still one of the biggest draws in Tinseltown, has become good friends with the former England football captain.

And after recently announcing his retirement from football, Beckham, 38, is understood to be keen to take on a new challenge.

A source said: “David has always wanted to be an action film star, and Tom promised him a long time ago he can make those dreams come true.

“David still loves soccer but feels that now is a great time to make a transition into film while he’s still young enough to land top-notch roles.”

The Beckham and Cruise families both attended an ice hockey game together on Tuesday where they were pictured happily smiling.

As they saw the Los Angeles Kings take on the San Jose Sharks during the NHL playoffs at the Staples Center in LA, their faces were splashed up on the big screen, much to the glee of the thousands of sports fans.

When the camera focused on the former Manchester United star, he quickly pointed it out to his 22-month-old daughter Harper, who shared a kiss with him for the arena’s “Kiss Cam”.

The little girl, spotting herself on the big screen with her famous father, broke into a broad smile.

One onlooker said: “They looked like a very happy family. There were a lot of smiles and the crowd loved it.”

Beckham and Harper were joined by the football star’s wife Victoria and their three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz as they watched the game.

Cruise, 50, and his son Connor sat in the row in front.

The actor has become close friends with the Beckhams.

In 2007, along with his then wife Katie Holmes, he welcomed David and Victoria to Los Angeles at a star-studded party.

After ending his footballing career with Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham flew out to join his family in Los Angeles earlier this week.

His name was immortalised on the big screen once before, when Bend It Like Beckham was a box office hit back in 2002. However, he did not actually appear in the film, other than in some archive footage.

Beckham is enjoying time off after hanging up his boots, but continues to have close links in the US following his five-year stint with LA Galaxy.

In addition to having an interest in acting, he has not ruled out starting up a new team in the US, based in Miami.

American Major League Soccer chief Don Garber is a fan of the idea. He said: “David Beckham helped to put this league on the map and really believed in the MLS.”
