- Mission Beckham: Tom Cruise promises to make him a film idol15:57 | 05/06/2013
IT might sound like Mission Impossible. But Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise is said to have made his friend David Beckham a solemn pledge to help him secure a role on the big screen.
The three-times Oscar- nominated star, still one of the biggest draws in Tinseltown, has become good friends with the former England football captain.
And after recently announcing his retirement from football, Beckham, 38, is understood to be keen to take on a new challenge.
A source said: “David has always wanted to be an action film star, and Tom promised him a long time ago he can make those dreams come true.
“David still loves soccer but feels that now is a great time to make a transition into film while he’s still young enough to land top-notch roles.”
The Beckham and Cruise families both attended an ice hockey game together on Tuesday where they were pictured happily smiling.
As they saw the Los Angeles Kings take on the San Jose Sharks during the NHL playoffs at the Staples Center in LA, their faces were splashed up on the big screen, much to the glee of the thousands of sports fans.
When the camera focused on the former Manchester United star, he quickly pointed it out to his 22-month-old daughter Harper, who shared a kiss with him for the arena’s “Kiss Cam”.
The little girl, spotting herself on the big screen with her famous father, broke into a broad smile.
One onlooker said: “They looked like a very happy family. There were a lot of smiles and the crowd loved it.”
Beckham and Harper were joined by the football star’s wife Victoria and their three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz as they watched the game.
Cruise, 50, and his son Connor sat in the row in front.
The actor has become close friends with the Beckhams.
In 2007, along with his then wife Katie Holmes, he welcomed David and Victoria to Los Angeles at a star-studded party.
After ending his footballing career with Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham flew out to join his family in Los Angeles earlier this week.
His name was immortalised on the big screen once before, when Bend It Like Beckham was a box office hit back in 2002. However, he did not actually appear in the film, other than in some archive footage.
Beckham is enjoying time off after hanging up his boots, but continues to have close links in the US following his five-year stint with LA Galaxy.
In addition to having an interest in acting, he has not ruled out starting up a new team in the US, based in Miami.
American Major League Soccer chief Don Garber is a fan of the idea. He said: “David Beckham helped to put this league on the map and really believed in the MLS.”
