Manchester United want to reunite Cesc Fabregas with his former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie

New boss Moyes know the midfield he’s inheriting needs work and Barcelona are prepared to sell for around £30million.

World Cup willies: Fabregas fears for his Spain place as he isn’t a Barcelona regular

David Moyes hopes to persuade Cesc Fabregas to reunite with his old Arsenal pal Robin van Persie at Manchester United in a sensational summer transfer.

Fabregas is unsettled at Barcelona, less than two years after re-joining his boyhood club from the Gunners, and is considering a move back to the Premier League.

Barca would be prepared to sell Fabregas for around £30million and that has alerted incoming new manager Moyes, who has always been a fan of the Spain midfielder and tried to bring Fabregas on loan to Everton when he was breaking through at Arsenal nearly a decade ago.

Moyes knows United’s midfield needs strengthening this summer in the wake of Paul Scholes’ retirement, and feels Fabregas is just the sort of player he requires.

United’s neighbours Manchester City have also been alerted to the situation, but Moyes has shown most interest so far.

The Scot’s biggest problem could be persuading Fabregas to snub a return to the Emirates.

Arsenal inserted a £25m buy-back clause in his Barca contract when they sold him for £35m in summer 2011.

It is believed the Londoners are highly unlikely to activate this clause, because of Fabregas’ acrimonious departure – he virtually forced the move through – but the 26-year-old maintains an affinity with the Arsenal fans and may not want to play against them for another Premier League club.

Moyes can cite Van Persie’s success in his first season since moving from the Gunners to Arsenal, which saw him win the Premier League and earn the Golden Boot.

Fabregas is frustrated that he has not been playing in Barca’s biggest games.

His Spain career has also stalled and he wants to be a first choice again somewhere with the World Cup finals just 12 months away.

Frank Lampard scores equaliser as England draw 1-1 with Republic of Ireland

Frank Lampard flicked home a first-half equaliser as England’s wait to beat the Republic of Ireland continued following a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

thuaquyet1

Ashley Cole captained England as a reward for winning his 100th cap earlier this year against Brazil, but it was Ireland who were celebrating when Shane Long headed the opener.

Evergreen midfielder Lampard timed his run to perfection midway through the first half to score, but David Forde produced a couple of smart late saves to leave England without a win over Ireland since 1985.

Ireland took the lead on 13 minutes with the first real chance of the game when Long took advantage of slack defending from Glen Johnson to glance a superb header beyond Joe Hart following Seamus Coleman’s cross from the right.

England took time to settle, but equalised 10 minutes later when loose defending from Ireland this time presented Daniel Sturridge with space on the left and his cross somehow found its way through for Lampard to flick home from close range.

Sturridge’s first start for England came to an early end just past the half-hour mark when he was stretchered off and replaced by Jermain Defoe.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shot straight at Forde after Manchester United team-mates Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney had combined well, while Coleman cleared Theo Walcott’s low ball into the six-yard box.

At the other end, Aiden McGeady was a dangerous outlet for Ireland and he was stopped in the penalty area by a perfectly-timed challenge from Gary Cahill after the winger had skipped past Johnson.

Just three minutes into the second half and Cole almost scored his first England goal, but he was denied by a combination of Coleman and Sean St Ledger after Rooney’s excellent pass had been fed back into the danger area by Walcott.

Cole was replaced by Leighton Baines on 54 minutes and, 11 minutes later, England launched a counter-attack through Defoe and he picked out Walcott, whose low shot from the right corner of the box was turned round the post by Forde.

Ireland substitute James McClean curled a free-kick over before Ben Foster, making his first England appearance since November 2010 after replacing Hart at half-time, had a lucky escape when the offside flag came to his rescue after he made a mess of a deflected cross.

In the final 10 minutes, England had two fine chances to snatch a winner, but Oxlade-Chamberlain shot straight at Forde and the winger’s Arsenal team-mate Walcott’s low shot was then kept out by the Ireland keeper’s legs.

Ancelotti wants Cannavaro as assistant

Fabio Cannavaro could return to Real Madrid if Carlo Ancelotti becomes the club’s new manager.

1369723441_extras_noticia_foton_7_1

The Italian coach has outlined the former Real centre-back – who played at the club four years ago – as one of his possible assistants. Ancelotti has been assessing who is best to become his right-hand man and Cannavaro fits the bill perfectly.

The Former Chelsea boss has had two assistants at Paris Saint-Germain – Paul Clement and Claude Makélélé. The Frenchman – who also used to play for ‘Los Blancos’ is another option the Italian is weighing up, along with Argentine Hernán Crespo. Ancelotti likes to have experienced and charismatic people in his coaching team and Cannavaro’s profile fits like a glove.

Ancelotti and Cannavaro have an excellent relationship. Cannavaro played under the manager at Parma for two seasons (1996-97 and 1997-98). Since then the pair share an understanding and football vision – they like their teams to be well organised, to fight together, to be well structured and competitive.

The former Real defender knows the club well, understands Spanish football, knows the club’s captains – Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos – and was a favourite with the fans.

Ron will stay here for years-Real president blocks Cris exit

REAL MADRID insist Cristiano Ronaldo will not be sold this summer — because they want to build the team around him for years to come.

ronaldo-1369760593_500x0
The Portugal superstar, 28, has been linked with a return to Manchester United while Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.
Ronaldo last year claimed he was “sad” at the Bernabeu, sparking speculation he wanted to quit the club.
But Real president Florentino Perez hopes he will stay and believes he should be their main man for years.
Perez said: “He told me in the summer he was sad and I told him we would do everything possible for him to be content.
“I don’t know if he has an offer from PSG. I think Cristiano is the best player in the world.
“We want to build the Madrid of the future around him and I would like Cristiano to be the best paid player in the world.”
Real lost out to on the signing of Brazilian ace Neymar to Barcelona at the weekend.
And Perez added: “If we had been able to sign Neymar without altering the eco-system of the club we would have but there were too many conditions attached.
“It would have cost us £130million. I don’t know how much it cost Barcelona.”
Perez wants Zinedine Zidane to lead the club into a new era when Jose Mourinho leaves at the end of the season.
The former France star played for Real between 2001 and 2006 and was named World Player of the Year three times.
His is currently Real’s director of football but Perez believes one day he will take over as manager.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti is the favourite to replace Mourinho, who is returning to Chelsea.
And Perez said: “We don’t know who will be the new coach.
“But we want this new sporting project to be lead by Zidane. I hope one day he will be coach.
“When we choose the coach, the new person and him will analyse the team so we can take a qualitative step forward.”
Real have been linked with a £60million move for Tottenham forward Gareth Bale.
When asked about signings, Perez added: “We have a magnificent team. All I can say is that we will improve by signing the best.
“I have thought about two players and some more from the youth team. We will see what the coach and Zidane say.”

Frank Lampard says Ashley Cole fully deserves the honour of captaining England

Frank Lampard says his Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole fully deserves the honour of captaining England in the friendly international against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Wednesday.

Ashley-Cole-England-100-caps_2896661

Left-back Cole will be making his 102nd appearance for his country and has been handed the captaincy in recognition of reaching his century of caps.

Lampard, who would normally have been captain in the absence of Steven Gerrard, said: “The way Ashley has performed over those 100 caps, he is the most consistent left-back probably in world football over such a long period of time.

“It’s the perfect gesture and very much deserved from England.

“I have been lucky enough to play with him for both club and country and with the competition he has had – you talk about Leighton Baines in the last few years, what performances he has put in – and Ashley still remains very much the first person on the sheet when he is fit.

“So fair play to him for that. There are not many players who get to the 100 and do that.”

Both Cole and Lampard enjoyed a strong end to the season as Chelsea beat Benfica in the Europa League final and finished third in the Premier League and Lampard is hoping to continue his fine form.

The midfielder, who became Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer earlier this month, said: “It’s nice to come in on a run of confidence personally and as a team, to finish how I did and for us as a club to win the Europa League brings a few players into the squad on a confident run.

“So if we can bring that into the squad, around the place and on the pitch, then it is going to be a bonus.”

Lampard is expecting a tough test from the Republic of Ireland in their first meeting for 18 years.

He said: “The type of players that they have, a lot of them play in the Premier League so that adds to the competitiveness of the game.

“I have a lot of respect for the Republic of Ireland. Every game I see them play, the organisation, their desire to get results and they are very proud to play for their country. We have to show the same and try and trust in our ability to come out on top.”

Confusion

Roy Hodgson had initially appeared to reveal that Lampard would be skipper for the game, with Cole leading the team out at Wembley, only for the matter to be clarified later with the left-back confirmed as captain.

The England manager told a press conference: “Frank has always been the captain in Steve’s absence.

“I appointed him vice-captain. But in actual fact tomorrow I have discussed this and Frank is happy for Ashley to lead the team onto the field in celebration of his 100th cap which he’ll receive tomorrow.

“It’s actually his 102nd appearance but he’ll receive the cap tomorrow; so Frank and I are happy that he will lead the team out there. But Frank still remains captain of the team – I’m afraid that’s a bit more complicated than you maybe would have liked it to be, but that’s the way it is.”

Hodgson then said that Cole would in fact “wear the armband” in the friendly against Giovanni Trapattoni’s side – a sign, of course, he would be captain.

“After speaking to Frank and sounding out the other members of the squad… everyone thought it was would be nice if he (Cole) had the armband on and led the team out,” Hodgson added.

“Frank was happy to hand over that honour because we all believe he deserves it; he’s been a fantastic servant not only to Chelsea and Arsenal but England too.”

What Hodgson appears to have tried to say is that Cole will in fact be captain against the Irish, but that Lampard spoke to the media because the Chelsea defender does not enjoy the attention that comes with speaking to the media on the day before the game – a responsibility usually shouldered by the skipper.

“Perhaps he (Cole) is reluctant to stand in front of the media and play the captain’s role,” Hodgson said

Champions League Final: Can Bayern Munich now forge an era of dominance?

No team in the modern era has defended the European Cup. That is the Germans’ challenge.

04-bayern1-rt

It was around 1am in the morning that the Bayern Munich chief executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, addressed the 1,800 guests at the club’s post-match party at the Grosvenor House hotel, and according to the club’s official account, proclaimed their Champions League final victory “the sporting comeback of the year”.

It was a not a comeback in the traditional sense, against overwhelming adversity and with the odds stacked against them, because Bayern are about as establishment as it gets when it comes to European football. They sit fourth in the Deloitte world money league, they have a gleaming new stadium and they buy other clubs’ best players. Instead this was about the kind of comeback that only the big boys can embark upon.

There are some great sides who never win the big trophies – it is just the way it works out. It looked that way for Chelsea over the last decade until they finally landed the European Cup last year, beating Bayern in Munich, and once they had done so, the curse seemed to have passed on to Bayern who were in their third final in four years on Saturday and fearing the worst as the game headed to extra time.

“I remember it well, the final a year ago where we’d all had such high hopes,” Rummenigge said, “and when we met at the Postpalast [a venue in Munich] I passed a tide of fans leaving the screening of the game at the Olympic Stadium. I looked in their faces, and I thought to myself: ‘Mamma mia! What’s this? What kind of shock has this club suffered? And how will we get over it?’

“I think many people expected us to fall apart after 19 May, that we’d freeze from shock and give up. I don’t think that would have been very Bayern-like. I think we’ve done what we had to do. We got down to work, especially this team, and this coach. I think it was a wonderful final against magnificent opponents, but – and this is the most important thing – we deservedly won.”

There was much other stuff of note in the speech, including a reminder to guests to heed Bastian Schweinsteiger’s advice and “drink plenty”. There was a tribute to Jupp Heynckes, who Rummenigge said rang him “on the stroke of 10am” every morning last summer to discuss what the team needed to move on to the next level. “I think this team has unbelievable character,” Rummenigge said. “They’re first-class on the field and first-class off it. They’re not arrogant. They win, and they keep going.”

There is no doubting that this Bayern team occupy the top perch in terms of elite European football and the decisions they have made, most of them taken well before the end of the season. Pep Guardiola in as coach, Mario Götze signed from their beaten opponents Borussia Dortmund and Robert Lewandowski on his way too, if Heynckes’ post-match hint is to be taken at face value.

No one, not even Barcelona, has won the Champions League title in two consecutive years since the competition was changed to the new format. That has to be the achievement that Bayern aspire to and they are capable of doing so in a way that recent winners like Internazionale and Chelsea were just not geared up to do. They were coming to the end of their cycle with a particular team, while Bayern are yet to peak.

Their captain Philipp Lahm, only 29 himself, said that the current Bayern team, or a version of it, was capable of more. “The pressure was enormous at the beginning,” he said. “I’ve always said that, if you want to be a golden generation, then you have to win an international title. We have finally succeeded. The team is at the right age and still has rosy times ahead.”

Yet life never stands still when it comes to the very best. As Bayern’s players paraded their trophy at Wembley, Barcelona were preparing to make the official announcement that they had signed Brazil’s latest prodigy Neymar, from Santos. In the next couple of weeks, Jose Mourinho will arrive at Chelsea and life will get interesting.

Never before has there been such unprecedented managerial change in the English game. The summer of 2013 feels like a crossroads in many respects, just as a decade earlier life changed immeasurably when Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, and, with less of an immediate impact, Manchester United bought Cristiano Ronaldo while David Beckham left for Real Madrid.

As well as new managers at Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea there will be change at Bayern, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. There could scarcely be a more intriguing start to it all than the European Super Cup final on 30 August in Prague between what will surely be Mourinho’s Chelsea and Guardiola’s Bayern. The trophy, essentially a Uefa junket, has never felt so relevant.

What the hell does Guardiola do with a team that is on the brink of the Treble under Heynckes – the Bundesliga, the Champions League and potentially the German Cup on Saturday? Win it better, like Brian Clough infamously promised to do with the Leeds United team he inherited from Don Revie in 1974? Rather, he is there to win it again and again in a fashion that has never been achieved in the modern era.

If you look at Bayern’s history they have had just one era of sustained success, that hat-trick of European Cup titles between 1974 and 1976. That is one more era of dominance than all but a handful of clubs have ever achieved but for any club wishing to break new ground in a modern era largely dominated by Barça, the next frontier is to win the trophy over consecutive years. It is a formidable task.

Arjen Robben’s very neatly taken winner – just three touches of the ball required of those nimble feet – said a lot about Bayern’s performance. They are not as exquisite in their execution as Barça are at their best but, in the likes of Robben, they have a number of the world’s best players who compete at such tempo and with such determination that they tend to overwhelm even the best opposition.

“What a club! What quality! What pride we can all have in this Bayern Munich!” Rummenigge said in his speech. There is no disputing that. Enough quality to win it next year too? That has to be the challenge.
