Man Utd bus ‘smashed up’ before West Ham game

Fans pelted Manchester United’s team bus with bottles and other missiles outside West Ham United’s ground on Tuesday (May 10) forcing a delay to their Premier League game.

Visiting captain Wayne Rooney said the vehicle was “smashed up”. Video footage circulating on social media showed the team bus being hit with cans and bottles thrown by fans as it arrived at West Ham’s Boleyn Ground in east London.

Police on horses and wearing helmets separated the black coach from the crowd, some wearing West Ham shirts, as onlookers recorded the scene on mobile phones.

Kick-off in West Ham’s final game at the landmark stadium was delayed by 45 minutes until 1930 GMT after the incidents. One image showed a gaping hole in a pane of protective glass.

Rooney told Sky Sports television: “We know it’s a big game for West Ham, a big night for them, leaving the stadium, but I’m sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done.” “It wasn’t nice,” he said.

A short video surfaced on Twitter that seemed to show Manchester United’s players lying on the floor of the bus as it came under attack.

Midfielder Jesse Lingard appeared to have filmed the video on his smartphone and could be seen pulling faces at the camera.

Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Adnan Januzaj, all wearing their club suits, could also be seen, squeezed together on the floor in the space between the two aisles of seats.

Police said that one officer and a member of the public were injured in the incident and said that all incidents of disorder would be investigated.

During the game, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea appeared to have bottles thrown at him after his team’s first goal.

The match, West Ham’s last at the Boleyn Ground, which has been the team’s home since 1904, ended in a 3-2 triumph over Manchester United after the hosts staged a thrilling comeback.

‘IT’S CRAZY’

The Football Association issued a statement criticising the events and vowing to work with police and the clubs involved to investigate.

“The FA strongly condemns the unsavoury incidents this evening involving both the Manchester United team coach outside West Ham United’s Boleyn Ground and objects thrown from a section of the home support during the game,” it said.

But West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan said the bus had not been damaged and blamed United for not arriving earlier.

“I don’t understand why United couldn’t get here at four o’clock,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They could have got here early. They knew it would be busy. It’s crazy.

“There was congestion in the street and they couldn’t get the coach in. There were people around the coach, but there was no attack on the coach. If you check the coach there won’t be any damage to it.”

Manchester United had also been delayed arriving for their game at Tottenham Hotspur, also in London, a month ago, when kick-off again had to be put back. On that occasion, traffic congestion was blamed.

But United manager Louis van Gaal echoed Rooney, saying: “What do I have to tell? The images tell everything. The way we have been received is not the proper way.”

Police said there were no arrests. “We are aware that a number of items were thrown towards Man Utd’s coach this evening,” the Metropolitan Police football unit wrote on Twitter. “Where criminal offences are committed we will seek to work with the clubs to bring those that break the law to court.”

West Ham are moving to the nearby Olympic Stadium at the end of season and a farewell ceremony followed Tuesday’s game.

Referee Chiến receives life ban for recent penalty call

The Việt Nam Football Federation’s Referee Committee has decided to ban referee Hà Anh Chiến for life because of his mistake in a recent V.League match.

Trọng tài Hà Anh Chiến tạm thời bị treo còi hết lượt đi.

Chiến gave a free penalty to host FLC Thanh Hóa during the last minutes of a match against Sông Lam Nghệ An on Sunday, which led to a draw result for Thanh Hóa.

He was previously banned until the end of the event’s first leg on June 25.

However, after reviewing the video tape and receiving reports from the match supervisor and the referee team, the committee decided it was a serious mistake that strongly affected the result of the game and the tournament’s ranking.

Head of the committee Nguyễn Văn Mùi said the Hanoian can still work at non-professional tournaments.

Chiến, 40, has been working as a referee for six years, but just joined the V.League two years ago

Chien also ordered Nghe An coach Ngo Quang Truong to leave the field for protesting the decision.
Nguyen Minh Ngoc, head of the V-League organizing committee, said he would seek reports from the match referees and supervisors as well as review the video.
Starting from the ninth round, a cooling break rule is in place allowing referees to grant three-minute breaks in the 30th and 75th minutes due to very hot weather.

Highlights of V-League 2016 Round 6

Hai Phong claiming their sixth win in a row; Saigon FC debuting on home field; and Hanoi T&T securing their first victory are among the five most notable points of the sixth round of the 2016 V-League.

Niềm vui chiến thắng của các cầu thủ Thanh Hóa

1. Hai Phong extend winning streak to six matches

Hai Phong continued to fly high in the 2016 V-League with a 1-0 win against Dong Thap last weekend. The sixth victory in a row kept the northern port city team dominantly atop the standings with 18 points. Hai Phong’s success stems from a simple but effective counterattack strategy, with Fagan and Stevens as spearheads in their offensive lines.

2.  Saigon FC debut at new home stadium

Hanoi FC was renamed as Saigon FC in the previous two rounds of play. However, it was not until the sixth round last weekend that the team, managed by Nguyen Duc Thang, had their first match on their new home field, Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City. Unfortunately, the Saigon players did not have the chance to celebrate a goal in their debut match ending up with a goalless draw against QNK Quang Nam.

3. Hanoi T&T taste flavour of victory for first time

Last year’s runners-up Hanoi T&T had their five-round thirst for victory quenched with a 5-2 away win over Long An on April 16. In addition, with three points bagged in the sixth round, the team, managed by Chu Dinh Nghiem, temporarily escaped from the bottom position as well as the pressure surrounding them. Currently, all 14 V-League participating teams have secured at least one win.

4.The round of the most goals scored

The sixth round saw the most goals netted since the beginning of the 2016 V-League season. A total of 23 goals were scored, including nine by domestic players and 14 by foreigners. This figure stemmed from Hanoi T&T’s resounding 5-2 victory against Long An and three other matches ending up with the same score of 3-1: Binh Duong-Khanh Hoa; Quang Ninh Coal-Song Lam Nghe An; and Thanh Hoa-Da Nang.

5. Osmar continues scoring for Gia Lai

Osmar Moreira had Hoang Anh Gia Lai full of doubts. In the over one and a half year since his only goal for Japanese club Mito Hollyhock after 10 matches in late 2014, the Brazilian striker failed to score any others.

However, things have gradually become brighter for Osmar. After nailing a double against Hai Phong, the team with the most resilient defensive line, in the fifth round, Osmar went on to score a “golden” goal last weekend firing the Gia Lai team to a successful comeback against XSKT Can Tho on the home field.

FIFA’s Infantino suggests 40-team finals could come in 2026

Broadening the World Cup finals to include 40 teams could come about in 2026, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said during a tour of South America on Tuesday.

South America would get five places in a 40-team tournament, Infantino added at a news conference in the Uruguayan capital.

Infantino, elected present of world soccer’s governing body last month, reiterated his wish to increase the number of teams at the game’s four-yearly showpiece event.

“We must open (the finals) up to more… The idea would be from 2026,” Infantino said.

We’re going to talk about this with everyone: players, the (FIFA) council.”

“Not only do you give lots of teams the possibility of taking part, but also to many of dreaming of a place (in the finals).

The finals have had 32 teams since 1998 and the champions, who used to automatically qualify as holders, have had to go into the qualifying phase from the 2006 tournament. Infantino said he did not plan to change this policy under the new plans.

South America has four automatic berths and one in an intercontinental playoff for a 32-team tournament.

“My proposal for South America is five fixed (places) and maybe one more to play for on the pitch,” Infantino said.

He did not say how the eight new places would be distributed or played for.

The hosts for the 2026 finals have yet to be voted on while the 2018 tournament will be held in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

Infantino was at regional body CONMEBOL headquarters in Asuncion, Paraguay on Monday where he viewed favourably the idea of the centenary 2030 tournament being staged jointly by Uruguay and Argentina who played the first final in 1930.

The neighbouring countries have won the trophy twice each.

Janssen, Narsingh bring England back to earth

Substitute Luciano Narsingh’s contested 77th-minute winner brought England back down to earth as the Netherlands came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory in Tuesday’s friendly at Wembley.

uk-football

England were looking to build on Saturday’s fine 3-2 victory over world champions Germany and went ahead late in the first half when Jamie Vardy completed a neat move to score his second goal in two games.

But Vincent Janssen equalised from the spot in the 50th minute and then teed up Narsingh for what proved to be the winner, despite appearing to barge England substitute Phil Jagielka to the ground in the process.

It was England’s final game before manager Roy Hodgson names his squad for Euro 2016 on May 12 and although he named a much-changed side, the defeat will dampen some of the euphoria sparked by the win in Berlin.

Danny Blind’s Netherlands have not qualified for the Euros, but their second-half display saw them extend their unbeaten run against England to seven matches.

England’s stirring win over Germany had fired their fans’ imaginations, but a team showing eight changes made a ponderous start on a cold, drizzly evening in west London.

Visiting right-back Joel Veltman might have won an early penalty following a late challenge by Danny Rose, while England goalkeeper Fraser Forster was tested by Ibrahim Afellay and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Holland’s players were sporting the number 14 on their chests in memory of late Dutch great Johan Cruyff, in a nod to his iconic shirt number, and the stadium rose to applaud in unison when the former Ajax and Barcelona star’s face was shown on the big screens in the 14th minute.

The mood otherwise was somnolent, but as the half progressed England – for whom Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater made his debut – began to land cuffing blows.

STONES SLIPS

Vardy slashed over following a one-two with Rose, while Daniel Sturridge, making his first start in 18 months, and John Stones had shots blocked and Ross Barkley drilled narrowly wide from 20 yards.

After Holland’s Quincy Promes had limped off, to be replaced by Narsingh, England went ahead in stylish fashion, Adam Lallana feeding Kyle Walker to cross for Vardy to knock in his second international goal.

Sturridge and Lallana both threatened early in the second half – the former testing Jeroen Zoet at his near post, the latter curling wide – but within five minutes of the restart, the visitors were level.

Stones’s calamitous slip let in Janssen and although Forster produced a one-handed save to thwart him, the AZ Alkmaar striker prevailed at the second attempt with a penalty after Narsingh’s cross from the right struck Rose’s dangling right hand.

England looked to reassert their advantage, Zoet acrobatically repelling Vardy’s long-range strike and Theo Walcott, a replacement for Sturridge, seeing a shot blocked by Daley Blind before driving over the bar.

Further attacking reinforcement arrived in the shape of Harry Kane, who replaced Lallana, but it was the Netherlands who struck again.

Jagielka looked to have been fouled by Janssen as the pair contested a ball inside the England box, but referee Antonio Miguel Mateu allowed play to continue and the Dutch number nine crossed for Narsingh to slam home.

The stadium was silenced and the closest England came to raising the volume was a left-foot effort from Kane that flashed a fraction wide
