Becamex Binh Duong lays one hand on V.League Championship trophy

Host Becamex Binh Duong defeated Thanh Hoa 5-2 to widen the distance as the two V.League leading clubs raced for the championship title Friday.

Văn Toàn (HAGL) ghi bàn thắng giúp đội nhà giành chiến thắng

Becamex Binh Duong’s Trong Hoang (R) vies for the ball against Thanh Hoa’s Tran Tan Dat.
With only three more rounds to go and eight points in the lead, Becamex Binh Duong only needs a draw to secure the crown even if Thanh Hoa wins all next three rounds.
Becamex Binh Duong fielded two foreign strikers, Cheikh Abass Dieng and Oloya Moses, who recovered from injury, while Thanh Hoa lost midfielder Sy Cuong due to a suspension penalty.
Both teams organized attacks right at the beginning of the match with Thai referee Mongkolchai Pechsri on the pitch.
Pechsri was one of the two foreign referees appointed for the first time this season, after the league was overshadowed by match-fixing allegations.
The other referee was Malaysian Mohd Nafeez Bin Abdul Wahab in the match between Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Dong Nai on the same day.
Anh Duc helped Becamex Binh Duong took an early lead in the 5th minute with a free kick to the far corner of Thanh Hoa’s goal.
Binh Duong continued to attack and Cong Vinh missed several shots.
In the 17th minute, Trong Hoang scored the second goal for Binh Duong after defeating goalkeeper To Vinh Loi with a shot from a narrow corner.
Binh Duong had the third goal in the 30th minute after Anh Duc had a good pass for Abass, who then defeated a confused To Vinh Loi.
Striker Pape Omar Faye shortened the distance for Thanh Hoa with a close shot in the 41st minute.
Heavy rain at Go Dau Stadium slowed down the match in the second half.
Moses scored the 4th goal for Binh Duong in the 59th minute from a fast counter attack.
The last two goals were shared between both teams in the extra time, one by Thanh Hoa’s striker Le Van Tan and the other by Binh Duong’s Tang Tuan.
In the bottom group, Hoang Anh Gia Lai had a precious 2-1 win over host Dong Nai to advance to 13th place with 20 points, while Dong Nai dropped to the bottom 14th position with 17 points.

Midfielder Kevin Nolan leaves West Ham

Nolan, who captained the Hammers when they won promotion to the top tier in 2012, asked to leave when he realised he wouldn’t be a key figure in new manager Slaven Bilic’s plans this term.

West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan has been allowed to quit the east London side in search of regular first team action, the Premier League club announced on Thursday (Aug 27).

Nolan, who captained the Hammers when they won promotion to the top tier in 2012, asked to leave when he realised he wouldn’t be a key figure in new manager Slaven Bilic’s plans this term.

The 33-year-old Liverpudlian, who moved to Upton Park from Newcastle in June 2011, insisted he had no complaints about the way his time at West Ham had come to an abrupt end.

“This has been a fantastic time for me since I walked in the door. I’ve had just over four fantastic years and I’d like to thank everyone who has made it so easy for me to settle down here with my family,” he said.

“My boy speaks like a Cockney now, so I don’t know if I’ll be moving back to Liverpool any time soon!”

Nolan made his final appearance for the club as captain in Saturday’s 4-3 home defeat by Bournemouth and Bilic, paying tribute to the midfielder, added: “In the end, it is good for both parties.

“We had a few chats with Kevin, now he’s leaving and I can only say a big thanks to him for the club because he was a great captain and a great professional.”

Champions League draw smiles on Barcelona, Manchester Utd

Reigning champions Barcelona and returning giants Manchester United were dealt favourable hands in the Champions League draw in Monaco on Thursday

champions-league-trophy

Barca’s quest to become the first team to retain the European crown began smoothly as Lionel Messi and company were paired with Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and BATE Borisov in Group E.

United grace the competition after a year’s absence and coach Louis van Gaal will be more than happy with the three-time winners’ Group B sparring partners PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho returns to FC Porto, the club he guided to the continental crown in 2004, with this duo joined by Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Group G.

There will have been groans emanating from north London with Arsenal pitted against five-time titleholders Bayern Munich – Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb completing Group F.

Bayern and Arsenal have met twice in the last-16 in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 with the German giants winning on both occasions.

Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain and their Qatari backers are desperate to add a European crown to their trophy sideboard.

But the quarter-finalists in the last three seasons have a tricky time ahead after being lumped in with ten-time continental kings Real Madrid.

Also in the Group A mix are Malmo – the birthplace of PSG talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the side who sent Celtic crashing out of the play-offs on Tuesday – and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Group C sees debutants Astana, one of three first-timers in the competition, rubbing shoulders with Atletico Madrid, Galatasaray and two-time winners Benfica.

Another newcomer, Borussia Moenchengladbach, are set for a Champions League baptism of fire against last season’s finalists Juventus, English Premier League champions Manchester City, and Europa League titleholders Sevilla in Group D.

Gent, the third team to be entering uncharted waters, can look forward to trips to Zenit St Petersburg, Valencia and Lyon in Group H.

The first round gets underway on September 15 and concludes next May at Milan’s San Siro which last held the final in 2001, with Bayern Munich beating Valencia on penalties.

Kurzawa signs five-year PSG deal

Monaco defender Layvin Kurzawa has signed a five-year deal with French champions Paris Saint-Germain, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Thursday (Aug 27).

layvin-kurzawa

Kurzawa, 22, will replace Lucas Digne who on Wednesday completed a loan move to AS Roma, with the French international serving as a back-up for first-team Brazilian left-back Maxwell. “I’m very happy to join such an ambitious club as Paris Saint-Germain,” Kurzawa told PSG’s website.

The amount of the deal was not revealed by PSG but French media reported it was worth in the region of €24 million (US$27 million)

“I’m going to continue my apprenticeship at the highest level beside players who are among the best in the world,” said Kurzawa who has two caps for France. “Signing for the capital club represents a new milestone in my career.

“I can’t wait to play my first match at the Parc des Princes, a legendary forum for me and to give Paris Saint-Germain fans all the trophies that we covet this season.”

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi said the club were delighted to attract “one of the rising stars of European football”.

“His (Kurzawa) status as a French international confirms that this player is very promising and ready to evolve at the highest level. This fourth summer signing confirms once again to our fans our very big ambitions for the season which has just started.”

The reigning three-time French champions are the only Ligue 1 team with a maximum nine points after three games, having already recruited German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt, French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli (Tottenham) and Argentine striker Angel Di Maria (Manchester United).

Rooney treble sinks Brugge

Manchester made short work of Club Brugge in Belgium on Wednesday night to advance to the group stage of the Champions League 7-1 on aggregate.

Brugge 0 Man Utd 4
Rooney nets hat-trick
Herrera adds fourth
United looked unstoppable
Red Devils advance 7-1 on aggregate
Match Summary
Wayne Rooney had his shooting boots on, on a mild evening in Bruges and opened the scoring with a neat chip over Sinan Bolat in the 20th minute.
The United striker added his second and third in the 49th and 57th minutes, first with a tap in from an unselfish square-ball from Ander Herrera before latching on to a superb Juan Mata through-ball to complete his hat-trick.
Herrera finished the rout in the 63rd minute, after being put through by Bastian Schweinsteiger and the Spanish midfielder made no mistake against the Club Brugge keeper, finishing neatly in the right corner.
Full Report
Club Brugge began the game brightly and nearly took a surprise lead in the fifth minute, but Luke Shaw got across to block Tom de Sutter’s volley.
From then it was almost all the Red Devils as Rooney, Mata and Herrera linked up effectively and looked dangerous throughout.
The visitors took the lead, and cancelled out Brugge’s away goal, in the 20th minute as Memphis Depay cut inside and beat his man, feigning a shot before laying up Rooney, who chipped the ball delicately over Bolat.
United pushed hard for a second, but to no avail before the break.
The Red Devils were back at it again immediately after half time and didn’t have to wait long for their second.
A superb team goal began with Depay winning the ball back and laying it on for Herrera who had made a dangerous run.
The 26-year-old could have gone for goal himself, but instead chose to square the ball for Rooney who finished the simplest of tap-ins.
Rooney had his midfield to thank once again for his, and United’s, third. Schweinsteiger picked out Mata on the right flank and the Spaniard cut inside before finding his captain with a delicately weighed through-ball and the England international slid the ball through the keeper’s legs to make it 3-0.
Schweinsteiger was again involved in Manchester’s fourth as the German playmaker put Herrera through one-on-one with Bolat and he slotted home to secure the visitor’s passage into the group stage of the Champions League.

Toffees battle past Barnsley

Everton were made to work for their money in a cracking 4-3 win over Barnsley after extra time in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

w638_h359_at__73954
Everton should have been a goal up, and ended up ruing the missed chance, as early as the eight minute when Adam Davies could only palm Kevin Mirallas’ speculative long range effort in the path of Aiden McGeady, but the Irish winger couldn’t capitalise.
Barnsley grabbed the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute when Phil Jagielka failed to clear an ordinary ball floated into the Everton box.
The ball dropped kindly for Sam Winnall and the striker spun cleverly and slotted home in the bottom corner.
Things went from bad to worse for Everton in the 23rd minute when Mirallas had a penalty shout turned down and found themselves two down less than four minutes later.
Another tame cross in the Toffees danger area was headed back into the six-yard box and Marley Watkins fairly won the ball from goalkeeper Joel Robles and steered the ball home from close range to give the host a 2-0 advantage.
Everton fought back hard and were rewarded shortly after half-time as the ball dropped for Mirallas in the Barnsley box and the Belgian acrobatically finished in the top corner to make the score 2-1.
The Toffees were back on level terms in the 58th minute as Gerard Deulofeu went on a mazy run down the right flank before chipping a cross in for Romelu Lukaku.
The striker missed the ball, but thankfully Steven Naismith was on hand to head home the equaliser.
Less than a minute later some superb play down the right by Barnsley found Daniel Crowley in the box and the striker, on loan from Arsenal, slid the ball home expertly.
Everton nearly went level in the 61st minute but Reece Wabara was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
The visitors were level in the 77th minute however, as Lukaku found some space in the box and met a Deulofeu cross to turn it into the corner to force the game into extra time.
Smelling blood, Everton went for the jugular, creating chance after chance before finding the decisive break through in the fourth minute of extra time.
Deulofeu, once again, had a hand in the goal as the Spanish winger broke down the right before putting in a good cross for Lukaku and Marc Roberts could only divert the ball into his own net.
The craziness was not over, however, Conor Hourihane was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a fine effort from 30 yards out and he forced a sharp save out of Joel five minutes later.
The Toffees weathered the storm and ended the tie in the 114th minute when Ross Barkley broke up-field and fed the ball to Lukaku, who fired home to make the score 5-3 in an incredible game.

Spurs to switch focus to Son

Tottenham are believed to be readying a move for Leverkusen forward Son Heung-min after failing to land West Brom striker Saido Berahino.

w638_h359_at__73958
Spurs have had two bids for Berahino knocked back by the Baggies, and as a result they are set to switch their focus to South Korea international Son.
The deal for the 23-year-old is thought to be worth in the region of £18 to £22million.
Son joined Leverkusen from Hamburger SV in 2013 and has scored 21 goals in 62 Bundesliga appearances.
The forward was not part of Leverkusen’s matchday squad for Wednesday’s Champions League qualifying second leg tie against Lazio.

Everton won’t let Stones leave

Everton look set to deny John Stones the chance to move to Chelsea, despite the defender handing in a transfer request.

w638_h359_at__73959

The 21-year-old has been the subject of interest from the Blues for a number of weeks, and on Tuesday asked to leave the club.
However, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez insists that from a financial perspective the club do not need to sell a player that they see as being vital club and as a result the England international will remain at Goodison Park. Martinez also confirmed that the club would officially deny Stones’ transfer request on Thursday.
“Our fans know all we are doing is trying to become better and be as good as we can,” Martinez said after Wednesday’s 5-3 Capital One Cup victory over Barnsley.
“John is a massive part of that and we’ve got a clear idea that in life and in football money can sometimes not buy everything. This is about values and John is a vital part of our future.”
He added: “This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger.”
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Stones has been ever-present for Everton this season, and once again started in the midweek cup tie. Martinez has lauded the youngster for his professional behaviour in a difficult situation, and the Spaniard was once again full of praise for Stones after his side’s win over the Tykes.
“John, for a young man under massive pressure, was terrific,” he said.
Stones joined Everton from Barnsley in February 2013 for a fee of £3m and has four years to run on his current contract, having penned a contract extension last August.

Pedro leads Barcelona to Super Cup glory

Barcelona forward Pedro scored the game-winning goal in the dying minutes of extra time to see his side crowned UEFA Super Cup champions courtesy of a 5-4 win over Sevilla.

w638_h359_at__69594

The 28-year-old, who has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United, put the speculation regarding his future to one side to score the decisive goal in extra time after the scores had been level at 4-4 after 90 minutes.
Sevilla took the lead just three minutes into the match in Tbilisi, Georgia, when midfielder Ever Banega curled a free-kick into the left-hand corner to leave Barca stunned.
The Champions League winners had to wait just four minutes to nab equaliser, which arrived courtesy of a Lional Messi free-kick, with the Argentine’s left-footed effort curling into the top corner and out of the reach of the outstretched hand of Beto.
In what was becoming something of an exhibition of quality free-kicks, Messi made it 2-1 to Barcelona in 16th minute when he beat Beto once again with a sizzling free-kick from 30 yards out.
Barcelona extended their lead to 3-1 shortly before the half-time break when Suarez latched on the rebound after his shot was saved by Beto and squared to Rafinha, who swooped in and poked the ball home under heavy pressure.
Seven minutes after the restart, Barcelona scored again, with Suarez again involved. The Uruguayan slotted the ball into the bottom corner after being brilliantly set up by Sergio Busquets.
Sevilla responded just five minutes later and reduced the deficit when Jose Antonio Reyes latched on to Vitolo’s cross and fired it past Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Reyes’ goal marked the start of Sevilla’s sparkling comeback as Kevin Gameiro converted a penalty in the 72nd minute to make it 4-3 after Jeremy Mathieu brought down Vitolo.
Sevilla found their equaliser nine minutes later when midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka was on hand at the back corner to tap in Ciro Immobile’s low squared ball that had beaten the Barcelona defence and that outstretched hand of Ter Stegen.
With neither team able to find a winner at the end of 90 minutes, the game headed into extra time.
Barcelona broke the deadlock 25 minutes into extra time when Messi’s free-kick was deflected back off the wall. The Argentine fired off another shot from outside the box, but it was brilliantly saved by Beto. However, the Sevilla keeper could only push the ball in the direction of Pedro, who reacted fastest and smashed the ball into the roof of the goal to seal the victory.
