Everton look set to deny John Stones the chance to move to Chelsea, despite the defender handing in a transfer request.

The 21-year-old has been the subject of interest from the Blues for a number of weeks, and on Tuesday asked to leave the club.
However, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez insists that from a financial perspective the club do not need to sell a player that they see as being vital club and as a result the England international will remain at Goodison Park. Martinez also confirmed that the club would officially deny Stones’ transfer request on Thursday.
“Our fans know all we are doing is trying to become better and be as good as we can,” Martinez said after Wednesday’s 5-3 Capital One Cup victory over Barnsley.
“John is a massive part of that and we’ve got a clear idea that in life and in football money can sometimes not buy everything. This is about values and John is a vital part of our future.”
He added: “This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger.”
Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Stones has been ever-present for Everton this season, and once again started in the midweek cup tie. Martinez has lauded the youngster for his professional behaviour in a difficult situation, and the Spaniard was once again full of praise for Stones after his side’s win over the Tykes.
“John, for a young man under massive pressure, was terrific,” he said.
Stones joined Everton from Barnsley in February 2013 for a fee of £3m and has four years to run on his current contract, having penned a contract extension last August.
