Reinier Jesus: Real Madrid signing cries during unveiling

Teenager Reinier Jesus said he was fulfilling “a childhood dream” as he cried during his unveiling as a Real Madrid player.

Reinier was the top scorer at the Dubai Under-16 World Cup in 2018

The 18-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder joined the La Liga club from Flamengo for £26m in January.

Reinier, who only made his senior debut on 31 July last year, was unveiled at the Bernabeu by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez on Tuesday.

“I want to be a part of the history of this great club,” Reinier said.

“Today is a very happy day for me as I get to fulfil a childhood dream.”

Reinier was part of the side that won the Brazilian league and the Copa Libertadores last season and was an unused substitute in December’s Club World Cup final against Liverpool.

He is the third Brazilian teenager to join Real in the past two years after Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

“It is our obsession to look for players who could be the big stars of tomorrow,” said Perez.

“Today we welcome a player who has just turned 18 but has already won the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo, one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Real are also in the process of renovating their Bernabeu stadium.

“As we aim to build the best stadium of the 21st Century, we are obliged to develop the talent of the future,” added Perez.

“It’s not easy to find unquestionable talent that can make you form part of Real Madrid’s legend.”

Atletico started beating Liverpool on the roundabout! – Simeone

A unique Wanda Metropolitano atmosphere inspired the Spanish side to take down last year’s winners, according to their coach.

Diego Simeone was in awe of the way the Atletico Madrid supporters welcomed the arrival of Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday and felt it proved key to their victory.

Supporters lined the streets outside the stadium, lit flares and chanted at great volume as the European and world champions’ bus arrived for the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.

Atleti had won just once in seven matches in all competitions heading into the game but Simeone’s side upset the odds, scoring early through Saul Niguez and holding on for a 1-0 lead to take to Anfield.

It was a match that saw Liverpool control possession for large stretched with Simeone regularly motioning to the crowd to get the Atletico supporters involved in the action.

And Simeone says that the fans played a massive part in the team’s result, starting from the pregame reception.

“We started winning on the roundabout next to the stadium,” Simeone told Movistar. “In eight years, I’ve never seen a reception like that.”

He added in his press conference: “[The atmosphere] was exciting, it makes you want to play. The team responded with great effort, as they did in Valencia.

“It was not [the best night] because we didn’t get a title, but there are nights you don’t forget and this was one of them.

“The best team in the world comes after a lot of wins and you beat them.”

Simeone had talked up the Wanda atmosphere prior to the match as he recognised the need to get a result before travelling to Anfield, where Liverpool have not lost in any competition since September 2018.

The Atletico boss’ counterpart, Jurgen Klopp, alluded to that fact by saying “Welcome to Anfield, it is not over yet”.

Anticipating a similar mood on Merseyside, the Atleti boss expects a tricky encounter when Atletico Madrid head to Liverpool on March 11 for the second leg of their Champions League encounter.

“We’re going to play with a lot of humility, because they are accustomed to playing massive games in their stadium,” he said.

Atletico Madrid will face VillarrealEspanyol and Sevilla in La Liga in the run-up to that match at Anfield.

Official: Dortmund history-maker Haaland is football’s next goalscoring superstar after upstaging Neymar

The likes of Neymar and Mbappe were put in the shade by the Norwegian sensation, who broke another record with his double in BVB’s 2-1 win over PSG.

If anyone still needed convincing as to the talents of Erling Haaland, the efforts of Tuesday evening should serve to silence any lingering doubts.

Borussia Dortmund‘s Norwegian prodigy – ably assisted by Jadon Sancho’s impossibly quick feet – put Paris Saint-Germain to the sword in a thrilling 2-1 victory in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at Signal Iduna Park and, in the process, even put the visitors’ stellar duo of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the shade.

Borussia Dortmund’s five Bundesliga clashes since returning from the winter break have yielded no less than 30 goals –  a figure identical to that posted by PSG in their corresponding six Ligue 1 outings so far in 2020. Whatever the outcome on Tuesday, the smart money was on a busy evening for Roman Burkl and Keylor Navas in their respective nets.

It was the hosts, though, that came out of the blocks fastest. With the imperious Sancho popping up across the field to pose a constant threat to the PSG backline, it was all Thomas Tuchel’s men could do to sit back, brace themselves against the storm and hope Navas proved up to the task.

Ultimately the Costa Rica No. 1 – a three-time winner of the Champions League trophy so dearly coveted in Paris – was forced to make just one save in the opening 45 minutes, a fine stop from Sancho when the teenage livewire fired in from the edge of the area.

That Navas was not forced into action more often owed more to a certain indecision from BVB’s young forwards in the final third, making a series of wrong turns when the net opened up, than from any particular merit shown by PSG.

At the other end, Dortmund’s notoriously leaky defence was made to look solid by their rivals’ sporadic, ineffectual incursions.

Neymar was drawn time and again into a battle he could not win, squaring up against the entire BVB backline against impossible odds, while Mbappe cut a forlorn figure far from the all-action goal scorer who has taken the football world by storm.

The second half began in much the same vein and, after going close with a couple of delightful pre-rehearsed set-piece routines that were only missing a stray boot to turn the ball home, the question seemed to be not if the Germans would open the scoring, but when.

The answer would come 20 minutes from the end, from an inevitable source.

Lucien Favre’s decision to double down and throw a third teenage striker on the pitch in the shape of Giovanni Reyna – moreover in a spell where PSG had found themselves in front – paid instant dividends when Dortmund finally broke the visitors’ resolve. Haaland found himself in the right place to poke home the rebound from Raphael Guerreiro’s deflected effort.

Neymar and PSG were not quite finished. A sparkling run from Mbappe – much-improved from the first half – left the Brazilian with a simple finish under the posts to level the score.

But Tuchel’s charges barely had time to catch their breath before the irrepressible Haaland was celebrating again, thumping home past Navas.

Not only did the Norwegian prodigy give BVB a perhaps priceless advantage on the night, but he also drew level with Robert Lewandowski as the Champions League’s top scorer in 2019-20, with an incredible 10 goals in seven outings so far, thus becoming the fastest man ever to reach double figures in the competition.

In Dortmund colours, overall, he already boasts 11 in just four starts – not a bad tally for a kid who on Tuesday marked the month’s anniversary of his debut in Germany.

With a completely objective eye, one could argue that Haaland fell shy of his best against PSG: at times he isolated himself from his team-mates, and kept his head down when a slightly cooler mind would have looked for assistance.

But his ability in front of goal at just 19 is nothing short of astonishing and, almost single-handed, he is turning around a Dortmund season that looked in danger of petering out into mediocrity as recently as one month ago.

Dortmund may have hoped for a slightly wider margin given the events of Tuesday, but a 2-1 lead to take to Paris is nevertheless a fine result.

And one thing is for certain: with Haaland on the prowl, it is hard to see BVB failing to cancel out that away goal in what is primed to be a sensational second leg.

Barcelona deny paying social media accounts to attack Messi and Guardiola

The Spanish champions have spoken out to address a report circulating which claims the club have attempted to damage the reputations of key figures.

Barcelona have denied that club president Josep Maria Bartomeu paid a social media company to criticise legendary Blaugrana figures and current players, including Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi.

Spanish radio station Cadena SER have alleged that Bartomeu hired ‘l3 Ventures’ to help improve his image and protect the reputation of his board.

Messi and Gerard Pique were reportedly among those targeted in a series of social media messages, along with former Barca superstars Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez.

Victor Font, who is set to be a candidate in the 2021 presidential elections at Camp Nou, was also among those reported to be a target of abusive posts.

It is understood Font is closely aligned with Xavi, who himself was heavily linked with a return to the club in a coaching capacity when Ernesto Valverde was sacked in January,

Bartomeu will not be seeking re-election , having been at the helm for the past six years, and Font is the only man to have stepped forward to succeed the 57-year-old ahead of next year’s vote.

Barcelona have released an official statement on Monday addressing the report, which reads: “With regards to information published today about the contracting of a company dedicated to creating opinion on social media with a view to damaging the image of third parties related directly or indirectly with the club, FC Barcelona roundly deny any relationship, and furthermore, the contracting of services linked to social media accounts that have broadcast negative or disparaging messages related to any person, entity or organisation that may be, or have been, related to the club.

“I3 Ventures, a service provider to the club, has no relationship with the accounts mentioned and, if any relationship was to come to light, the club would immediately end their contractual agreement and bring about any necessary legal action to defend their interests.

“As such, FC Barcelona confirm that it has services contracted relating to the monitoring of social media with the aim of analysing both positive and negative messages about the organisation itself.

“With the contracting of these services, the club is attempting to look after and preserve its reputation as well those of people related to the club (sponsors, players, board members, members, supporters’ club members), as far as the protection of this reputation is a fundamental element and responsibility for those who work for the organisation.

“The club demands an immediate rectification of the information published and reserves the right to exercise legal action against those who continue to implicate the club in such practices.”

Barcelona have endured a turbulent start to 2020, with a public dispute between Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal making the headlines in the weeks after Valverde’s dismissal.

Quique Setien was the man who inherited the managerial reigns from Valverde, but the Blaugrana have since surrendered the initiative to Real Madrid in this season’s title race.

Barca will be back in La Liga action on Saturday at home to Eibar, three days before they take on Napoli in the Champions League knockout stages.

Chelsea enter no man’s land battle for Champions League place after Man Utd loss

Injuries to key men contributed to a dreadful night for Frank Lampard’s Blues, who conceded ground in the race for the top four.

Chelsea had until now avoided the chaos of no-man’s land, having been in the top four of the Premier League season since September. But now, after defeat at home to Manchester United, they face the realistic prospect of being sucked into a dogfight with mid-table teams that extends down to 10th-place Arsenal.

A prolonged malaise has led Chelsea to this position. They have suffered poor results since the end of November, a six-game winning run now only a distant memory. Two consecutive defeats to United this season have now become three.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men first delivered the goods in a low-quality game when Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s brilliant cross was wonderfully headed in by Anthony Martial.

It was a significant blow and Chelsea were furious having watched Harry Maguire seemingly kick out at Michy Batshuayi in an off-field tussle in Lampard’s technical area just moments earlier.

Maguire would kill the game later on, heading in from a Bruno Fernandes corner. Fernandes was a player that Lampard called world-class on transfer deadline day, having been told he would get no one in until the summer.

Still, there was further ill-fortune in the second half, with Kurt Zouma’s goal ruled out by VAR for a push by Cesar Azpilicueta. The captain may complain that he himself was pushed by Fred on the set-piece but that changed nothing in referee Anthony Taylor’s eyes.

Chelsea were indeed unlucky but they weren’t good enough to ensure victory regardless of refereeing decisions. They are now deserving of their spot among the mid-table clubs despite being 12 points clear of them in November.

VAR also ruled Olivier Giroud offside on a late goal which led to United fans chanting in favour of the technology. The travelling Reds acknowledged that they got on the right side of the fine margins.

Chelsea now find themselves among a weak United side, Arsenal and Tottenham – who both lost their managers this season – and Wolves and Sheffield United in a jostle for the European spot.

All these sides are further emboldened by UEFA’s decision to ban Manchester City for Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches but getting into Europe by default would hardly be a glorious commendation of Lampard’s work.

Chelsea’s task is made all the more difficult with an incredibly tough run of games to come. Tottenham can go above Chelsea with a win on Saturday afternoon to compound Lampard’s problems. Then the Blues face Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with Liverpool and Everton to follow back in the English top tier.

They will look hopefully to the treatment table for a boost, with all of Tammy Abraham, N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Andreas Christensen now injured. They tried to sign Ajax‘s Hakim Ziyech in January, but will only get hold of him in the summer instead.

They may bemoan their luck but the cold hard facts are that United have closed the gap to three points after a league double against Chelsea. Tottenham are just one point behind now with Chelsea on a four-game winless run.

A lifeline for Solskjaer is a hammer blow for Lampard. He now prepares for battle among a cluster of clubs in the final third of the season, with Bayern Munich and many selection headaches to come in the immediate future.

Guti: Almeria manager denies attending party with players

Almeria manager Jose Maria Gutierrez has denied rumours he attended a party with his players in a nightclub in the Andalusian city and said he would resign if images were found.

Guti played more than 500 games for Real Madrid as a player

The former Real Madrid midfielder, 43, was speaking after the Spanish second division club suffered their third defeat in four games.

Known as Guti in his playing days, he spent 24 years at the Bernabeu.

“It has been hard days for my family and for me,” the Spaniard said.

Gutierrez, who was appointed in November, told the club’s radio station UDA Radio: “If someone finds an image of me, with the players or alone, in a nightclub in Almeria, I submit my resignation and, not only that, but all the money that Almeria has paid me I return it.

“It is very painful that just because someone says that it is a rumour, it already goes viral throughout Spain and goes out everywhere.

“It’s the burden that I have been being Guti, but life has made me strong. I lead an orderly life, focused only on my work as a coach of Almeria and my family.”

Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Huesca left Almeria in third, six points behind leaders Cadiz.

Gutierrez, who was sent to the stands at the end of the match, won five La Liga titles and the Champions League three times at Real, playing 542 games for the club. He was also capped 13 times by Spain.

Porto striker Marega storms off pitch in protest following alleged racist chanting

The Mali forward was clearly upset and angry in response to abuse from the crowd.

A furious Moussa Marega had to be restrained by his Porto team-mates as he tried to leave the pitch in protest over alleged racial abuse from Vitoria de Guimaraes supporters during their Primeira Liga clash on Sunday.

The 28-year-old demanded he was substituted in the 69th minute of the game in reaction to chanting towards from the stands, which he had endured since the warm-up.

A clearly distraught Marega made his way towards the touchline, gesturing with two thumbs down towards the Vitoria fans.

Moments earlier the Mali striker had celebrated putting Porto 2-1 in front by pointing towards his skin, with a chair thrown from the stands in his direction as he hugged his teammates by the touchline.

With the abuse seemingly continuing, Marega decided he had endured enough and attempted to make his way off the field.

Teammates, Vitoria players and coach Porto coach Sergio Conceicao appeared to try and convince an emotional Marega not walk off the pitch.

The incident went on for more than three minutes before Marega was eventually allowed to come off and be replaced by Wilson Manafa.

The striker continued to angrily gesture towards the Vitoria fans as he headed down the tunnel flanked by members of Porto’s backroom team.

Marega is a former Vitoria player, having scored 14 goals in 31 appearances during a loan spell at the club during the 2016-17 season.

Writing on Instagram after the game, he said said: “I would just like to tell these idiots who come to the stadium to make racist chants, go f*** yourself.

“And I also thank the referees for not defending me and for giving me a yellow card because I defend my skin colour. I hope I never see you on a football field again. You are a disgrace!”

Porto also made their feelings clear after the game by posting an anti-racism message on its Twitter account, with coach Conceicao saying everyone at the club was fully behind Marega.

“We are a family regardless of nationality, skin colour, hair colour. We are human, we deserve respect. What happened here is unfortunate,” he said.

“We are completely indignant with what happened. I know the passion that exists for Vitoria and I think that most of the fans do not see themselves (as having the same) attitude of some people who insulted Moussa since the warm-up”

Guardiola to stay at Man City despite Champions League ban

UEFA announced a two-year ban against the Premier League champions but the club remains confident appeal will succeed.

Pep Guardiola is set to see out his Manchester City contract with the Premier League champions confident that their two-year expulsion from the Champions League will be overturned.

UEFA handed down the punishment, which includes a €30 million fine (£25m/$33m), to City on Friday for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

City criticised the ruling and immediately confirmed they will appeal the decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The club remains confident that the appeal will succeed and said in a statement that they have “irrefutable evidence” to support their denial of any wrongdoing.

City’s ban is set come into force at the start of next season but with an appeal set to take several months it could throw into difficulty the club’s plans for the summer.

Guardiola and director of football Txiki Begiristain were set to bring in a number of new signings as they bid to cut the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool, who have moved 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

News of the ban sent shockwaves through the first team but the club sought to reassure players at a team meeting on Saturday that they remain confident that they will be playing Champions League football next season.

City sources insist the club will operate as normal with Guardiola making plans for the final 12 months of his contract. The punishment increased speculation that the Catalan could curtail his time at the club amid interest from Italian giants Juventus. But sources say that he has no plans to end his time at the Etihad Stadium prematurely.

Guardiola has won two Premier League titles during his four years at the club but is determined to deliver a maiden Champions League success and his first since leaving Barcelona. However, should the ban be upheld, this season’s competition would represent his last chance.

City face 13-times winners Real Madrid in the round of 16 later this month. The club’s fans have always a difficult relationship with UEFA after several controversial punishments and regularly boo the Champions League anthem before kick-off so the second leg, at the Etihad on March 17th, is expected to be played in a hostile atmosphere.

Saigon FC get a new outlooking

Saigon FC have been transferred to a new owner, but it may be too soon to expect to a professional outbreak in V-League 2020 because there has been no strong change in their force.

Moving to HCMC and changing its name from Hanoi to Saigon FC, the club actually chose Thống Nhất as its home stadium because they could not pay all of their spending. However, from 2020 season, Saigon FC can feel secure about financial issue as they have been transferred to a new owner.

It is also the transfer that makes Saigon FC be expected to have a strong transformation and to no longer follow the target to avoid relegation since moving to HCMC. But this is the story of the future. In the upcoming season, the hosts of Thống Nhất stadium maybe find it hard to make a professional outbreak to be one of the strongest teams in the title race.  This evaluation comes from human resource activities of Saigon FC for V-League 2020. Comparing to the football club of the same city HCMC FC, coach Hoàng Văn Phúc does not possess such big contracts.

The new players of Saigon FC are just in potential form, including midfielder Huỳnh Tấn Tài from Long An who has not promotes his professional performance as expected despite of being called up for national U23 team; goalkeeper Tùng Lâm from Hà Tĩnh who is just evaluated acceptable through an international friendly competition. The highlight of Saigon FC, if possible, can be the recruitment of Ahn Byung Keon. The South Korean centerback is high evaluated during the ongoing preparation, but it is necessary to have practical tests through competitive games in official competitions.

Saigon FC is expected to have a solidary, unendureable and highly odd playing style like what they performed in previous season/Photo by Đức Cường

There are not several noticeable players, Saigon GC maybe expect to stability of their force like the previous seasons. Quốc Long, Văn Triền, Đức Lợi, etc are still the expected ones who form a solidary, unendureable and highly odd playing style like what they performed under coach Nguyễn Đức Thắng or Nguyễn Thành Công. Their new manager Nguyễn Văn Phúc also possesses a tactical vision like the two former ones, that is building a short pass playing style which promises to promote the advantages of Saigon FC.

It can be said that the necessary thing that Mr.Phúc brings Saigon FC is stability, avoiding erratic performance, some time playing well and some time falling near by the relegation group like in the last season. It may be hard to finish high in the league as qualification of their force is not very good, but Saigon FC can completely believe that they can finish much higher from the relegation group if they have stability.

Odion Ighalo kept away from Man Utd training ground

Manchester United’s new signing Odion Ighalo is training away from the club this week as a precautionary measure following his arrival from China.

Odion Ighalo last played for parent club Shanghai Shenhua on 6 December in the Chinese Cup final

United have decided on the policy because of the risk – albeit extremely slight – posed by coronavirus.

They decided against taking the striker on their winter break training camp in Spain because of concerns he may have difficulty getting back into the UK.

Ighalo, 30, is expected to travel with the squad for Monday’s game at Chelsea.

BBC Sport understands Ighalo has been training with support from the club using a personalised fitness programme to get him ready for the Chelsea Premier League game.

This has been done at the National Taekwondo Centre, close to the Etihad Stadium and where he has been staying since his arrival in England 11 days ago.

Ighalo joined United on loan for the rest of the season from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua.

The death toll in China from the virus is now more than 1,350, with almost 60,000 infections in total.

Numerous sporting events have been cancelled in China and the Far East, including the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix.
