Solskjaer confirmed as new Cardiff City boss

Former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been named as manager of Premier League strugglers Cardiff City and told the fans one of his immediate aims was to finish higher than rivals Swansea City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The 40-year-old Norwegian, who earned a place in United’s history by scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, replaces Scot Malky Mackay who was fired last week.
And just as he did as a player, Solskjaer hit the target perfectly when he told a news conference: “I would like us to finish above Swansea, that must be an aim…that will be important for everyone here.”
Cardiff are fourth from bottom while Welsh rivals Swansea are four places higher in the table.
Solskjaer also discounted suggestions that former United manager Alex Ferguson had tried to dissuade him from taking the job.
“Absolute nonsense,” he said. “He has given me his advice and wished me all the best.
“It’s a fantastic challenge to be here, it is the right step for me now,” added Solskjaer.
“What Cardiff have shown in the last three or four years – being in the play-offs, being promoted and in a couple of cup finals, they are ready for the next step and hopefully I will be the one who can do that with my philosophy of football.

“One of the factors that intrigued me most about Cardiff is the passion of the fans and that they love the club – the support they give their heroes.
“If you want to manage a football club you really want that passion.”
Solskjaer said he had a “rolling contract” and was unconcerned about the controversy surrounding Cardiff owner Vincent Tan.
He added that the biggest decision he had to make was to uproot his family from their home in Kristiansund in Norway where he has lived while managing Molde for the last three seasons.
Caretaker David Kerslake has been running Cardiff since Mackay left and Solskjaer inherits a side one point above the relegation zone after losing 2-0 at leaders Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
The former Norway striker led Molde to the first league title in their 100-year history in 2011 and retained the crown a year later.
They also won the Norwegian Cup last year.
The task Solskjaer faces now will be focused on survival rather than titles as Cardiff battle to preserve their top-flight status, achieved last season under Mackay after an absence of 51 years.
Mackay was sacked after falling out with billionaire Malaysian owner Tan in a series of public squabbles and despite being acclaimed by fans as the best manager the club has had.
Solskjaer, who sat next to Tan at Arsenal on Wednesday, will be in charge for Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie at Newcastle United.
“It is great to be right back in the thick of it, back in the Premier League,” he said.
“What assurances have I had? I have had great chats with (chairman) Mehmet (Dalman), I met the owner again yesterday and they have convinced me they want me to be in charge and to take the club forward.
“I don’t really need any more confirmation than that.”

United dropped 25 points en route to last season’s title… Moyes’ men have now surrendered 26 at the halfway stage! Is it finally time to concede their crown?

Having stumbled through the first half of their campaign, David Moyes and Manchester United have now dropped more points than Sir Alex Ferguson’s champions did during the whole of last season.

For even if they were to celebrate victory in every remaining match between now and May 11, they would still fall one point short of the 89 amassed by Fergie’s title winners.
On current evidence, however, the chances of embarking on such a profitable streak appears remote. Is it, then, finally time to concede that their crown has slipped?

New year, old problems: Manchester United were beaten by Spurs on New Year's Day, a result which means they've lost more points this season than they did during the entirety of the last campaign

New year, old problems: Manchester United were beaten by Spurs on New Year’s Day, a result which means they’ve lost more points this season than they did during the entirety of the last campaign

Champion: Sir Alex Ferguson’s title winners dropped just 25 points en route to last season’s crown

Yes, there have been rumours of revival – namely four straight victories in December – but when United are presented with an adversary from the upper reaches of the table they have fallen short.
Indeed, a mini table collated of the matches contested between the top eight teams this term has Moyes’ boys rooted to the bottom.
They have won just once – at home to Arsenal in November – from eight games against those seven rivals.
There are trips to Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon and, were that ruinous record to persist, then Moyes’ return against the top teams – he failed to win a single away match at United, Liverpool, the Emirates and Stamford Bridge during 11 years with Everton – would again be thrust beneath the spotlight.

The devil is in the detail: The numbers do not make good reading for United boss David Moyes

The devil is in the detail: The numbers do not make good reading for United boss David Moyes

But it is their return at Old Trafford which will be of greatest concern to the club’s followers who had long since considered their residence something of a fortress.
‘Fergie’s feartress’, however, has faded. United have surrendered 16 points from 10 outings in their own back yard this season.
You would have to journey back through the final 32 matches of Ferguson’s home reign to equal that loss of points.
Their latest reverse came against Spurs on New Year’s Day, after which Moyes slammed the refereeing of Howard Webb.
Webb, though, was not responsible for the marking which allowed Emmanuel Adebayor to head the north Londoners into the lead, nor the 10 wayward shots which failed to locate the visiting target.

And had the whistler awarded a late penalty for Hugo Lloris’ challenge on Ashley Young – the point of Moyes’ angst – it would have merely salvaged a draw for the hosts, conversion permitting.
Even beyond the numbers, however, there is an obvious over-reliance on Adnan Januzaj to provide the final-third flair which is flickering all too fleetingly. Januzaj is 18 years old, his elders need to shoulder more of the attacking onus.
One of those seniors is Robin van Persie but, with the Dutchman sidelined through a combination of thigh and groin problems, his impact at present is nought and doubts remain over his fitness.

On that score, Moyes has admitted that Wayne Rooney is playing through the pain barrier with a groin injury but he cannot afford to give his star striker a recovery period..
So while a new year had promised much given their festive flurry, the arrival of 2014 has presented some old problems – home defeats and injury woe chief among them.
They are 11 points adrift of top spot and four shy of a Europa League berth.
That being the case, the quest to regain their crown has almost certainly met its expiry date.

Swansea City 2-3 Manchester City: Kolarov seals seventh straight win for Pellegrini’s pacesetters

Wilfried Bony scored near the end of each half but goals from Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and the left-back were enough to secure a New Year’s Day win for the visitors.

355288hp2

Goals from Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov secured the three points for Manuel Pellegrini’s side to give them their first win at the Liberty Stadium.

Wilfried Bony grabbed two for the hosts but it was in vain as the visitors recorded another impressive victory.

The win took Manchester City back to the top of the table, ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Cardiff City later on Wednesday, while the Swans remain in mid-table but will be nervously looking over their shoulder at the bottom three.

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup was able to recall Angel Rangel and Wayne Routledge to his starting line-up, while the visitors made five changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace.

The hosts created the first chance as Bony collected a pass from Jonathan De Guzman on the edge of the penalty area but his low shot clipped the post on its way to going wide.

The visitors made the Ivorian pay for that miss almost immediately, as they opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Fernandinho. Swansea failed to clear a right-wing corner and the loose ball dropped to the Brazil international, who fired through a crowd and into the back of the net.

Laudrup’s side went close to an equaliser in the 25th minute when a flowing move involving Bony and substitute Roland Lamah – on for the injured Pablo Hernandez – released De Guzman in behind the Manchester City defence but the Dutch midfielder could not get the ball out of his feet and his scuffed shot was easily held by Joe Hart.

Both sides had chances to get the game’s second goal before the break and it was Bony who produced a leveller for the hosts. The forward got ahead of Pablo Zabaleta in the 44th minute to meet De Guzman’s cross and head past Hart – although the 25-year-old appeared to be in an offside position when the ball was delivered.

Pellegrini’s side restored their lead in the 58th minute, however, thanks to Toure’s 10th league goal of the season. The midfielder created room for himself room inside the penalty area before his shot wrong-footed Gerhard Tremmel thanks to a deflection off Ashley Williams.

Kolarov then added the third goal eight minutes later with a great solo effort. The Serbian won the ball from Routledge inside his own half and ran unopposed to the Swansea penalty area, where he cut onto his right foot and fired past Tremmel – although the goalkeeper should have done better.

As Swansea continued to show endeavour, Bony missed a chance to reduce the deficit in the 72nd minute but he did net his second with a long-range strike in the second minute of injury time as the hosts gained some reward.

Liverpool 2-0 Southampton: Agger & Suarez get Reds back to winning ways

The Uruguayan netted his 20th goal of the season and 14th in six matches at Anfield with a superb 25-yard curling free-kick after Daniel Agger had headed the Reds in front.

355340hp2

The Merseyside outfit had slipped to fifth in the table with losses at title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, but returned to winning ways by avenging their 3-1 loss to Steve Bruce’s men in the reverse fixture last month.

Liverpool created the better openings of the first half and moved ahead on 36 minutes when Philippe Coutinho’s corner was met by the head of stand-in captain Daniel Agger.

Suarez doubled the lead on 50 minutes to notch his 20th Premier League goal of the season with an unstoppable bending free-kick, joining Fernando Torres as only the second Liverpool player to score in eight consecutive Premier League home games.

Brendan Rodgers’ side pushed for a third as the game neared its conclusion, but the scoreline remained at 2-0 as the hosts climbed to fourth, while Hull stay 10th.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard returned to the bench after a four match lay-off with a hamstring problem, while Iago Aspas and Aly Cissokho replaced injured duo Joe Allen and Mamadou Sakho.

Hull brought in Alex Bruce and David Meyler for Liam Rosenior and George Boyd.

In a lacklustre opening, the two sides exchanged speculative efforts with Yannick Sagbo’s half-volley and Suarez’s inventive chip.

Suarez thought he had put the hosts ahead on 19 minutes when he headed home Coutinho’s free-kick, but the Uruguayan was denied by the linesman’s offside flag.

Raheem Sterling then had a great chance to break the deadlock for the hosts when he broke clear of the Hull defence on the left only to shoot straight at Allan McGregor.

Liverpool’s pressure told with nine minutes remaining in the half, though, as Agger leapt highest to head home Coutinho’s corner.

Rodgers’ team then spurned two great opportunities to extend their lead before half-time.

First, Jordan Henderson side-footed wide from the edge of the box following a superb passage of play, before Coutinho placed an effort wide of the near post after collecting Henderson’s intelligent pass.

Shortly after the break the home side did add a second. Suarez was fouled by James Chester and picked himself up to curl home a sublime free-kick from 25 yards, becoming the first Liverpool player to reach the 20-goal landmark in consecutive league campaigns since Robbie Fowler in 1994-95 and 1995-96 in the process.

Gerrard entered play shortly after the hour mark to a standing ovation and dragged an effort wide with 15 minutes remaining, while Coutinho twice went close from distance.

In the closing stages Suarez had another goal disallowed when he side-footed home from Kolo Toure’s centre, but the ball had gone out of play before the defender crossed.

Coutinho then almost had the final say in injury time as he forced McGregor into a stop from close range after a brilliant solo run, but Liverpool were made to settle for a two-goal winning margin.
