Vietnam extends contract with women football coach

The contract of Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat with the Vietnamese national women’s football team will be extended by one year, the Vietnam Football Federation said Friday.

VFF

The male coach has been assigned the task of leading the women’s squad to win the gold medal at the SEA Games 27 in Myanmar next year.

His two-year contract with the team has expired after they clinched the 2012 Southeast Asian Women Football Championship by defeating Myanmar 4 – 3 in the penalty shootouts following a goalless draw on September 22.

The new salary for the coach has yet to be revealed, but sources said it will be increased from the current US$3,000 a month. The wage is only one eighth of the sum other foreign coaches of the men’s team received.

After the SEA Games, the women’s team will begin another tough journey to achieve a higher target: securing a ticket at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Vietnam has a golden chance to strike for the World Cup dream as FIFA has recently announced that Asia will be given five slots at the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada, instead of three tickets as usual.

Meanwhile, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), the second runner-up of the 2011 edition in Germany, will be banned from participation following a doping scandal at the event.

“It’s a tough target, but it is unnecessary to turn to a different high-level coach,” VFF chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said in a statement.

“We still trust coach Fat as he has been working well with the team,” he said.

Vietnam’s professional football crisis yet unresolved

The People’s Committee in Ho Chi Minh City has tasked the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to contact Navibank Saigon Club to resolve all existing problems relating to the ongoing controversies within the country’s professional football clubs.

The Committee was considering the plan submitted by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. However, until today, October 8, things still remained where they were.

HCM

A meeting of VPF.

The City-based Navibank Saigon Club is likely to withdraw from the V-League championship as it cannot afford the VND45 billion expenses necessary to keep the club going. Its major sponsor, Navibank, last week announced that it would stop funding the club because of its own internal financial troubles.

Navibank Saigon Club, a big sponsor for many sports stadiums and sporting events, is seeking permission to be transferred to the Hanoi Football Federation (HFF).

The club stands to be dissolved if HFF, or any other sponsor institution, rejects the transfer request.

The Hanoi FC is also reportedly set for dissolution after its owner, banking mogul Nguyen Duc Kien, was arrested in August over charges of committing economic wrongdoings.

Kien is also the owner of the Hanoi Juniors First Division, which is expected to cease operations amid the present scenario.

With several clubs ready to withdraw from the V-League championship, Vietnam Professional Football Club said it already has a contingency plan in case this happens.

“The V-League can still run with less than 14 clubs,” said the VPF statement, elaborating that the clubs from the First Division will replace after V-League withdrawal.

The new season of Vietnam’s professional football league has been scheduled to start in late January 2013, which means there are now only four months left for insiders to alleviate the internal crisis that has raged since the end of this year’s season.

The First Division 2013 will kick off on January 18, while the top-flight V-League will see its first competition round begin a day later, the leagues’ operator, the Vietnam Professional Football, announced at the concluding meeting of the 2012 season on Saturday.

VPF has received the registration of all 14 clubs to be competing at the V-League, but it is not sure if the new season will start with this number of participants.

VPF was set up last year to better manage the football leagues under the management of VFF, but has completed its maiden term with, sadly, an unhappy ending.

At the concluding meeting last week, the company was accused of using VND2 billion from the V-League’s budget to wiretap some club owners.

Nguyen Van De, chairman of Thanh Hoa FC and the person who made the accusation, said he has obtained fool-proof evidence against what Doan Nguyen Duc and Le Hung Dung called groundless allegation.

VPF has also been criticized for only summarizing the positive things it has done in the last season, while leaving out the negative side unaddressed.

Four Vietnamese players Kim Hong, Thi Huong, Minh Nguyet and Thanh Huong successfully shot the ball into the net of Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Myanmar failed at the fourth and fifth shots as Khin Moe Wei kicked the ball against the goalpost and Marlar Tun could not beat goalkeeper Kieu Trinh of Vietnam.

The Vietnam Football Federation and the Vietnam Export Import Bank have decided to award the Vietnamese team VND1 billion (US$48,000). Le Hung Dung, chairman of the bank, rewarded goalkeeper Kieu Trinh with VND50 million.

In the competition for the third place, Thailand won Laos at 14-1 to obtain the bronze medal.

Book traces a century in the rise of Vietnamese football

The HCM City Football Federation (HFF) has released a book titled “Landmarks in the 100-year History of Vietnamese Football,” the first ever of its kind.

The book is written by famous novelist Nguyen Quang Sang with assistance from HFF president Tran Duy Long and several sports journalists who collected materials.

The book traces the establishment and development of the game in Viet Nam.

It answers questions like “Since when football has existed in Viet Nam?” and “Where the country’s first football team was formed?”

It also covers the history of the national championships since the country’s unification in 1975, the champions, top scorers and other statistics. It attempts to chronicle Viet Nam’s achievements and has accounts by star players like Le Huynh Duc and Nguyen Hong Son.

But critics say the book has failed to portray a complete picture of football in the country, and has also missed out some famous names like Tran Cong Minh.

Edgar Davids in VN as street football ambassador

Retired Dutch footballer Edgar Davids Thursday arrived in Ho Chi Minh City to attend the Tiger Street Football tournament where he is the international ambassador.

EdgaDavid

Davids, who started his career at Ajax Amsterdam, was warmly welcomed by local fans when his flight landed at the city’s Tan Son Nhat Airport.

“I have quite many friends in Vietnam. I hope this will be a successful trip, and I’ll try to eat Vietnamese food,” he said, while delivering signatures and taking photos with the fans.

The Tiger Street Football tournament runs from September 27 to 28, at the 23-9 Park in District 1.

Davids has 74 caps for the Netherlands, scoring six goals, and represented his country once at the FIFA World Cup, and three times at the Euro.

“I came from street football in Amsterdam. The techniques of street football helped me to catch attention from the Ajax’s manhunter recruiters,” he told reporters. “Hence, street football always has a significant meaning to me.”

Street football is a good school to learn football techniques, and it has nourished many of the world’s top players, including Pele, he added.

Davids said he expects to be surprised by Vietnamese players.

“What’s important is you should prove your skills with the ball,” he said.

HCMC Football Federation chairman resigns

Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation (HFF) chairman Le Hung Dung submitted his resignation at the federation’s annual meeting held on  Wednesday.

Le-Hung-Dung-650x360
Three other people in the federation’s steering committee also asked to resign – General Secretary Duong Vu Lam, Vice Chairman Tran Le Nguyen and member Pham Huynh Tam Lang.

Dung, who is also Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (in charge of finances), said, “Vu Lam, Le Nguyen and IÂ are too busy with our own business, while Tam Lang is resigning because he is not physically fit.”

Dung was appointed HFF Chairman in 2008 to replace Tran Van Tao. During his term, there was no major uplift in the city’s football futures. In 2009, Ho Chi Minh City Club (formerly called Saigon Port Southern Steel) was relegated from the country’s top-tier V-League to the second-tier First Division.

The city fans thought the city would have no representatives in V-League last season, but Navibank bought the Fourth Military Zone team, making Navibank Saigon the city’s V-League team.

In the 2010 season, HCM City Club did not play well in the First Division while Navibank Saigon struggled in V-League matches. Dung said he would resign if the two teams were relegated, a fate that the clubs managed to avoid.

However, Dung  asked to resign before the federation’s annual meeting in 2010, but his request was refused.

The 2011 season looked brighter for the city’s football with Navibank Saigon finishing eighth position out of the 12 teams in V-League; and more importantly, winning the National Cup. Also, the Xuan Thanh Club managed to be promoted to V-League by finishing on top of the First Division, while HCMC Club managed to stay in the First Division.

Dung said he would still support and stand side by side with the city’s football and call for help from businesses if needed.

Tran Duy Long, HFF Vice Chairman, was appointed to take charge of the position of the chairman for the remaining part of the 2008-2012 term. Tran Dinh Huan was appointed General Secretary and Tran Anh Tu, Vice Chairman.

The city football federation’s steering committee now consists of 11 people: Tran Duy Long, Tran Dinh Huan, Nguyen Hong Pham, Vo Hoang Buu, Tran Quang Hung, Tran Anh Tu, Nguyen Trong Binh, Nguyen Huu Bai, Ho Nguyen, Tran Tuan Anh and Nguyen Vinh Tho.

Saigon XT win first National Cup, qualify for AFC Cup

HCMC –Saigon Xuan Thanh won their first ever National Cup after trouncing V-League runners-up Hanoi T&T 4-1 and qualifying for the AFC Cup for the first time at HCMC’s Thong Nhat Stadium on Wednesday.

Le-Hung-Dung-650x360

Saigon Xuan Thanh players celebrate after receiving the National Cup trophy at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCMC on Wednesday.

The scoreline was no surprise but the Saigon players, fans and officials will be wishing they could have had this very same result ten days ago when they drew a blank at home to Hanoi on the league’s final day, gifting the title to Danang who join them in the AFC Cup as V-League champions.

Saigon, who finished third in the V-League table and had home advantage, knew this was a great chance to make up for their league heartbreak and avoid ending the season empty-handed.

Hanoi started the game without goalkeeper Duong Hong Son, who failed to recover from injury in time to take his starting berth. Pham Ngoc Tu replaced Son and midfielder Bui Van Hieu came in for Vo Duy Nam.

Brazilian striker Antonio Carlos, Ugandan midfielder Moses Oloya, Cameroonian forward Christian Nsi Amougou and naturalized foreign players Huynh Kesley Avels, Nguyen Rogerio and Dang Van Robert, however, played from the start for the favorites Saigon.

The home side dominated possession and striker Huynh Kesley Alves made the breakthrough after just ten minutes with a fantastic 30 yard free kick.

Antonio Carlos doubled the lead in the 35th minute from Huynh Kesley Alves’ cross. Hanoi had Nguyen Ngoc Duy’s effort ruled out by referee Vo Quang Vinh for handball.

The home side continued to press heavily with their forwards wreaking havoc on the visiting side’s backline but Argentine striker Gonzalo Marronkle surprisingly pulled one back in the 52nd minute.

The visitors faced more difficulties when defender Nguyen Hong Tien was sent off with a second yellow card in the 74th minute. Defender Le Hai Anh netted for Saigon to make it 3-1 in the 76th minute.

Hanoi’s midfielder Nguyen Ngoc Duy also was sent off for his second booking as time was running out and Nguyen Rogerio grabbed his goal in injury time to rub it in.

Saigon lifted the trophy in front of their 5,000 noisy supporters and also pocketed VND350 million. Hanoi T&T netted VND200 million. Losing semi-finalists Song Lam Nghe An and SHB Danang received VND100 million each. The victory also meant the cup stayed in the city after Navibank Saigon’s win last season.

The National Cup attracted 25 teams from the V-League and the First Division, competing in a knock-out format.

The final marked the end of Vietnam’s 2011-2012 football season. The new season will begin in December with the Super Cup match between V-League champions SHB Danang and National Cup winners Saigon XT.

Italian futsal team come to VN

The HCM City international exhibition futsal championship kicks off today at the Tan Binh Gymnasium, Tan Binh District, with Uzbekistan taking on Kuwait and Viet Nam facing Italy.

Fleet-footed: Gabriel Lima will play at next month’s
FIFA Futsal World Cup in the colours of Italy.

The tournament will finish on October 27.

For Viet Nam and Uzbekistan, it is an opportunity to try new players and build a core of players for the future.

Italy and Kuwait, who are treating the tournament as training for the World Cup, will not play each other.

The Italian futsal team, ranked third in the world, has arrived in Viet Nam for the event. Playing in HCM City also enabled the Italians to acclimatise to Southeast Asia ahead of the Futsal World Cup to be played in Thailand next month.

“Futsal is not like football. But if you have a career in futsal, you have plenty of opportunities to do what you want,” Gabriel Lima, one of the best players in the team, said at a press conference yesterday.

“Playing futsal also gives me an opportunity to study at university after retirement. I will go to university and study marketing. I hope to work in sports marketing or other areas in the sport.
