Brazil court freezes Neymar assets worth US$47m

A Brazilian court on Friday (Sep 25) froze US$47 million (S$67 million) in assets belonging to football superstar Neymar over tax evasion allegations surrounding the Barcelona striker.

Judge Carlos Muta wrote in a ruling that Neymar – who is facing fraud claims in a separate case in Spain – had been subjected to a “special fine” concerning alleged unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2013.

“I confirm that a special fine of 150 per cent was applied… requiring payment of 188,820,129,25 reals (US$47.3 million), of which 63,591,796 relate to income tax and the rest to fines and interest, with regard to events that took place in the calendar years from 2011 to 2013,” Muta wrote.

The court ruling is another bodyblow to the reputation of Neymar, the figurehead of Brazil’s national team.

The 23-year-old is already battling fraud allegations in Spain stemming from the financial arrangements surrounding his move from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.

In June, Spain’s National Court admitted a lawsuit alleging “corruption and swindling” by Neymar, his father and Santos. The case has been brought by a Brazilian investment fund, DIS, which owned part of the transfer rights for the player when he was at Santos.

Blatter, Platini risk suspension amid FIFA ethics probe

The future of embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter and his heir-apparent Michel Platini was in play on Sunday (Sep 27), as they faced scrutiny by the football world body’s ethics committee that could end with suspension.

Committee spokesman Andreas Bantel told AFP he could not comment on individual cases, and refused to confirm reports that the committee had opened a probe against the two most powerful men in football.

But he emphasised that “if there is an initial suspicion, the Investigatory Chamber of the Ethics Committee initiates a formal proceedings.” “These rules apply to all people in football regardless of their position or name,” he wrote in an email.

And there is plenty of suspicion to go around, with the ethics committee expected to meet in the coming days. In a dramatic escalation of the corruption scandal engulfing world football since May, Swiss investigators swept into FIFA’s headquarters on Friday as they turned their attention to Blatter and Platini.

Authorities said a criminal investigation had been opened against Blatter on suspicion of criminal mismanagement, while UEFA chief Platini, who was favourite to win an election to find a successor to Blatter, had come under scrutiny over a multi-million-dollar payment.

Swiss prosecutors said Friday that Blatter was being investigated over the 2005 sale of World Cup television rights to the Caribbean Football Union, then run by his former ally Jack Warner, a deal which had been “unfavourable for FIFA”.

Suspended within days?

Blatter, who has denied any wrongdoing, was also suspected of making a “disloyal payment” of US$2 million to Platini in February 2011 allegedly made for work the Frenchman carried out for FIFA between 1999 and 2002.

The UEFA chief defended the payment as compensation for work he conducted under contract with FIFA, but did not explain why it arrived nearly a decade after he completed the work.

Friday’s stunning development came after months of probes following raids in Zurich which led to the indictment of more than a dozen top officials. The FIFA ethics committee moved quicker back then, waiting barely 24 hours to suspend the officials snapped up in the May 27 dawn raid.

Media was awash on Sunday with speculation over how long 79-year-old Blatter could hold on, and if Platini, his 60-year-old former ally, still had a chance to take his place. “If Blatter does not step down himself, he will be suspended within days,” the Sonntags Zeitung weekly wrote, citing an inside source.

A former FIFA insider, who requested anonymity, however told AFP that a probe by the ethics committee did not necessarily mean Blatter would face suspension. “It is not automatic, neither for him, nor Platini,” he said.

If Platini is suspended he could be barred from standing in the February 26 election to succeed Blatter. If Blatter were to be suspended, meanwhile, he would likely be forced to step down before the February vote, bringing a rapid and ignomious end to his 17-year FIFA reign.

Interim chief needed

Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term at FIFA’s congress in May despite the erupting scandal, but then announced on Jun 4 that he would stand down in February. If Blatter leaves, Cameroonian FIFA vice president Issa Hayatou would temporarily take the reins.

But Mark Pieth, a former FIFA reform chief, told the Sonntags Blick weekly the 69-year-old who has headed African football since 1998 was not suitable. “He is also a member of System Blatter”, Pieth said, pointing out that the Cameroonian himself had been accused of corruption and conflict of interest in the past.

Instead, he called for a “transitional president who did not grow up within the system, and who has not profited from the system,” suggesting an interim leader should spend two years at the helm reforming FIFA before handing over the reins to a more long-term leader.

Pieth said Theo Zwanziger, the 70-year-old former head of the German football association, would be the best man for the interim job since he had long been a powerful critic of the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar – a major element in corruption allegations engulfing FIFA.

Blatter’s former personal public relations advisor, Klaus Stoehlker, meanwhile told Schweiz am Sonntag that the FIFA president was unlikely to make a hasty exit.

“A premature withdrawal is not up for discussion … The president remains president,” Stoehlker told the paper, insisting that the allegations against Blatter were “groundless.” He suggested Blatter could even “stay on beyond Feb 26, so FIFA can function” if no appropriate successor was found.

Platini himself also appeared to be taking the commotion in his stride. A source close to the UEFA chief told AFP on Sunday he “is calm, he is serene. He has done nothing wrong.”

One-match ban for Gabriel

Arsenal defender Gabriel has been handed a one-match ban by the Football Association after admitting a charge of improper conduct.

w638_h359_at__82932
The charge stems from an incident in the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend when the Brazilian refused to leave the pitch initially after he was sent off by referee Mike Dean following an altercation with Diego Costa.
The FA subsequently rescinded Gabriel’s red card and three-game suspension upon appeal, but they have now meted out another punishment for the 24-year-old, which includes a £10,000 fine.
Costa, meanwhile, incurred a three-match ban after the striker was found guilty of violent conduct towards Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny, while both clubs were also charged with failing to control their players during the fiery London derby.

Guardiola denies ref favouritism

Bayern Munchen head coach Pep Guardiola has dismissed suggestions he receives favourable treatment from match officials in the Bundesliga.

w638_h359_at__82934

TSG Hoffenheim boss Markus Gisdol made the claim this week after being sent to the stands for remonstrating with the assistant referee during the 1-1 draw with BVB Dortmund, saying afterwards that Guardiola has never been reprimanded for similar incidents “10 times.”
But the Spaniard has professed his innocence, insisting he has nothing but respect for referees, while also moving to ease tensions with Gisdol.
“I’ve talked to Markus. All is well. I don’t think a Catalan coach has a bonus here,” Guardiola said.
“I’ve never in my life directed a bad word at a referee. I have the greatest respect.”

Valencia sneak past Granada

Valencia picked up their first home win of the new campaign with a 1-0 victory over Granada at the Mestalla on Friday night.

w638_h359_at__82942
The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, but neither of their early chances came to fruition.
Ruben Rochina sent in a free kick that was saved by the keeper, while Javier Marquez’ shot shortly after was just too high.
Isaac Success also could have put Granada in front, but while his first touch was superb and got him into position, his finish was less effective.
Valencia started playing themselves into the match, and after Alvaro Negredo nearly opened the scoring with a well struck shot, Zakaria Bakkali’s corner in the 26th minute did the trick, Shkodran Mustafi finding himself in the right position to head the ball home as the hosts took the lead.
Granada probably should have equalised within moments of that opening goal, but while Marquez’ lofted ball beat the keeper, it did not beat the woodwork.
Negredo thought he had scored Valencia’s second just after the break after finding himself in the box unmarked, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech protected his side’s lead with a fingertip save to deny Marquez, while Negredo continued to make his presence felt at the other end.
The final chance of the match fell to Thievy Bifoumi, and though his effort was blocked in injury time, Valencia had already done enough to secure all three points.

Shaw out for at least six months

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that he does not expect Luke Shaw to be back in action for at least six months.

w638_h359_at__82955

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that he does not expect Luke Shaw to be back in action for at least six months.
The full-back broke his leg in two places during United’s Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on 15 September and underwent two operations on the injured limb.
“He will be out at least six months. You can’t predict the development of the rehabilitation,” Van Gaal said.
“There is always more – and then he has to get fit.”
Van Gaal admitted that often in cases such as that of the 20-year-old it is the mental aspect of the injury rather than the physical that is toughest for players to deal with.
However, the Dutchman revealed that Shaw is in good spirits and is already thinking about his return.
“I said at the start of the season that Luke would be the one to watch because he came back from the summer much fitter and stronger,” he said.
“That was certainly the case in our first seven matches of the new season and even in the opening minutes against PSV Eindhoven.
“Seeing Luke in such distress was hard. However, I am pleased to say that he is really upbeat now and already talking about his recovery.
“Mental strength is very important when you suffer such an injury and I have every confidence that Luke will now be fully focused during his recuperation.
“We have a fantastic medical team here and we will ensure that he receives the best possible care.”

There’s no evidence of match-fixing in Vietnam’s top league: football chairman

No evidence has ever been found to confirm any match-rigging in the 2015 season of the top-flight V-League 1, according to Le Hung Dung, chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

tK40jOD0

Dung sat down for an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper after the top league of the nation ended on September 20 amid rumors and allegations from spectators that many games in the last rounds were fixed.

“In football, a stronger team does not always win over a weaker side,” Dung said.

“In Vietnam, if a stronger team loses to a weaker squad, rumors and allegations will automatically arise and spectators will attribute it to ‘match-rigging’ or clubs ‘donating points’ to each other to maintain ‘underground’ relations.”

Last season, police found sufficient evidence to prove several players of Dong Nai had manipulated the result of their game with Quang Ninh and the players later admitted to the manipulation, the VFF chairman said.

“This season, police officers kept a close watch on the V-League 1 games and have confirmed that nothing unusual had happened,” he added.

Asked about the disagreement between Dung and his deputy Doan Nguyen Duc in recruiting Toshiya Miura as the head coach of the Vietnamese men’s national football team, the VFF boss said there is nothing out of the ordinary when two people have differing points of view.

But VFF officials will attend a meeting to discuss ways to do everything better for the development of Vietnamese football, he promised.

Liverpool survive League Cup scare, Newcastle out

Liverpool survived an almighty scare in the League Cup by edging fourth-tier Carlisle United on penalties on Wednesday (Sep 23), while Sheffield Wednesday dumped Newcastle United out of the tournament.
liverpool-9
Carlisle, the lowest-ranked team in the competition, took Liverpool to penalties at Anfield after the game finished 1-1 following extra time, Derek Asamoah having cancelled out Danny Ings’ 23rd-minute opener.

Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho both saw penalties saved by Mark Gillespie, but reserve goalkeeper Adam Bogdan parried the decisive kick from Carlisle’s French forward Bastien Hery to earn Liverpool a 3-2 shootout win and spare manager Brendan Rodgers a humiliating exit.

Liverpool followed Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in going through and will host Bournemouth in round four.

But while they avoided a defeat that would have recalled their elimination on penalties by Northampton Town at the same stage of the competition five years ago, it was not a result that will enhance Rodgers’s position amid speculation about his future at the club.

Liverpool’s inefficiency was demonstrated by a shot count that read 47-5 in their favour, while centre-back Dejan Lovren had to be stretchered off after injuring his ankle in extra time.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren is another manager feeling the heat after his side, who have won none of their first five Premier League games, lost 1-0 at home to Wednesday.

Lewis McGugan scored the game’s only goal, beating Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul with a low shot from outside the box in the 76th minute to send Wednesday into round four for the first time since they reached the semi-finals in 2002.

Wednesday’s reward was a home tie with Arsenal, who overcame Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the north London derby thanks to a brace from unlikely match-winner Mathieu Flamini.

Bidding to avoid three consecutive defeats for the first time since April 2010, Arsenal, who made 10 changes to Spurs’ eight, took a 26th-minute lead when French holding midfielder Flamini followed in to score after Michel Vorm parried a long-range shot by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Martial on target again

Spurs were rewarded for a spell of sustained pressure when Calum Chambers poked Nacer Chadli’s cross into his own net in the 55th minute, only for Flamini to give Arsenal victory 12 minutes from time with a superb low volley from just outside the box.

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea continued their recent revival by winning 4-1 at third-tier Walsall to record a third consecutive victory.

Missing Diego Costa, who began a three-game ban for striking Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny at the weekend, but with captain John Terry back in the team, Chelsea went 2-0 up when Ramires headed home before teeing up Loic Remy to score.

James O’Connor squeezed a shot past Asmir Begovic to bring Walsall back into the game on the stroke of half-time, but second-half goals from full debutant Kenedy and Pedro Rodriguez completed victory for the visitors. Chelsea will visit Stoke City in the fourth round.

Anthony Martial’s assured start to life at Manchester United continued as the French striker scored his fourth goal in three games in a 3-0 victory against second-tier Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring and 19-year-old Brazilian Andreas Pereira crowned his full debut with a stylish free-kick before substitute Martial found the net in stoppage time with a classy finish into the bottom-right corner. Next up for Louis van Gaal’s United is a home game with second-tier Middlesbrough.

Elsewhere, Jay Rodriguez, Sadio Mane and Shane Long all scored twice as Southampton swept into round four with a 6-0 rout of second-tier Milton Keynes Dons, who conquered Manchester United in last season’s competition.

Dwight Gayle claimed a hat-trick, including two penalties, as Crystal Palace beat Charlton Athletic 4-1, while Norwich City beat top-flight rivals West Bromwich Albion 3-0 courtesy of goals from Matt Jarvis, Kyle Lafferty and a Sebastien Pocognoli own goal.

English League Cup third round results:

Crystal Palace 4 Charlton 1

Liverpool 1 Carlisle 1 (after extra time; Liverpool win 3-2 on penalties)

Manchester Utd 3 Ipswich 0

MK Dons 0 Southampton 6

Newcastle 0 Sheffield Wed 1

Norwich 3 West Bromwich 0

Tottenham 1 Arsenal 2

Walsall 1 Chelsea 4

Barcelona thrashed 4-1 by Aspas-inspired Celta Vigo

Barcelona’s 100 per cent start to La Liga season was brought to a stunning end as Celta Vigo moved top of the table with a stunning 4-1 victory on Wednesday (Sep 23).

The side formerly managed by Barca boss Luis Enrique were deservedly given a 2-0 half-time lead by excellent finishes from Nolito and former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas. Barca’s first league defeat since February was sealed when Aspas struck again on the counter-attack early in the second period.

Neymar pulled a goal back for the visitors, but Celta rightly had the final word as John Guidetti rounded off a famous win with the Galicians’ fourth nine minutes from time.

It is the third time Barca have conceded four goals in just nine games this season having been thrashed 4-0 by Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup and beaten Sevilla 5-4 in the UEFA Super Cup.

Barca were back close to full strength for what Enrique warned would be one of their toughest tests of the season as Gerard Pique returned from suspension, whilst Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez were restored to the starting line-up after being rested for Sunday’s 4-1 win over Levante.

Despite Celta’s bright start it was the visitors who had the first two chances, but both Lionel Messi and Neymar placed efforts too close to Sergio Alvarez who repelled the ball to safety.

Celta took the lead on 25 minutes when Nolito found space inside the area and curled the ball perfectly high into the far corner to join Cristiano Ronaldo as the league’s top scorer with five goals.

Things got worse for the European champions just four minutes later when an error from Pique allowed Nolito to play in Aspas, who remained calm before expertly clipping the ball over the helpless Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Aspas had a great chance to put the game to bed five minutes into the second-half, but this time he pulled his shot just wide of the target.

The hosts then had to withstand a brief Barca onslaught as Messi struck the post from Iniesta’s cut-back. Pique then headed just over and Messi saw another powerful effort turned behind by Alvarez.

Yet, from the resulting corner, Celta’s lightning speed and accuracy shone through as Aspas hooked the ball over Dani Alves and sprinted half the length of the field before slotting home his second of the night.

Nolito should have made it 4-0 when he side-footed just wide as Celta broke dangerously again from another Barca corner. However, Celta were also grateful to Alvarez for keeping Barca at bay as he made a brilliant stop to prevent Neymar pulling a goal back.

The Brazilian did finally get Barca on the scoresheet as he controlled a fantastic pass from Messi before smashing the ball home.

Yet, Celta needed just two minutes to restore their three-goal lead when former Celtic and Manchester City striker Guidetti took advantage of more slack Barca marking to fire home his first goal in Spanish football.

LvG holding off on Wilson loan

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal anticipates academy graduate James Wilson to remain at the club until the mid-season transfer window at least.

w638_h359_at__82924
The 19-year-old striker was expected to leave Old Trafford on loan in the coming weeks following the arrival of Anthony Martial on transfer deadline day.
Wilson made 13 Premier League appearances for United in Van Gaal’s first season at the helm, but has yet to feature for the first team this term.
After initially feeling the teenager would be better served by continuing his footballing education elsewhere for a spell, Van Gaal has now decided he may have a role to play in the next two months.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Sunderland, Van Gaal said: “I think he needs to play but Manchester United’s interests are always higher than individual interests, so I have doubts to let him go.
“And maybe we have to wait until December that we know how it is with our club, (if) we are succeeding in the Champions League, the Capital One Cup, because maybe he shall receive minutes off me because I have to rotate.
“You have seen what I have done against Ipswich Town. It can be done also in the other matches, so I have talked with him and I think that we wait until December.”
