Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that he does not expect Luke Shaw to be back in action for at least six months.
The full-back broke his leg in two places during United’s Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on 15 September and underwent two operations on the injured limb.
“He will be out at least six months. You can’t predict the development of the rehabilitation,” Van Gaal said.
“There is always more – and then he has to get fit.”
Van Gaal admitted that often in cases such as that of the 20-year-old it is the mental aspect of the injury rather than the physical that is toughest for players to deal with.
However, the Dutchman revealed that Shaw is in good spirits and is already thinking about his return.
“I said at the start of the season that Luke would be the one to watch because he came back from the summer much fitter and stronger,” he said.
“That was certainly the case in our first seven matches of the new season and even in the opening minutes against PSV Eindhoven.
“Seeing Luke in such distress was hard. However, I am pleased to say that he is really upbeat now and already talking about his recovery.
“Mental strength is very important when you suffer such an injury and I have every confidence that Luke will now be fully focused during his recuperation.
“We have a fantastic medical team here and we will ensure that he receives the best possible care.”
