Cristiano Ronaldo: Juventus forward charged by Uefa over celebration

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with improper conduct by Uefa for a goal celebration in the win over Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Ronaldo has scored 124 goals in the Champions League

The 34-year-old appeared to mimic Atletico boss Diego Simeone, who turned to fans and grabbed his crotch during his side’s 2-0 first-leg victory.

Ronaldo made the gesture after his third goal of his hat-trick in the return leg as Juventus won 3-0.

Uefa will rule on the case on 21 March.

Simeone was fined 20,000 euros (£17,000) for his celebration.

Juventus have been drawn to play Dutch side Ajax in the quarter-finals.

Unbelievable Mbappe more valuable than Messi and Ronaldo, says Mourinho

The manager believes the 20-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star deserves to be considered the most expensive player on the planet.

Jose Mourinho believes Kylian Mbappe’s age and “incredible” ability makes him more valuable than even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe has lifted the World Cup, won Ligue 1 twice, scored 55 top-flight goals and been voted fourth in the Ballon d’Or all before his 21st birthday.

And it is his youth that former Manchester United manager Mourinho views as the critical difference when comparing his worth in the transfer market to Barcelona captain Messi, 31, and Juventus talisman Ronaldo, 34.

The ex-ChelseaInter and Real Madrid head coach thinks the Franceinternational could command even a higher fee than the game’s current most expensive player, his PSG team-mate Neymar.

“For a player like Mbappe, when you speak about the future, you don’t need to say what he’s going to be like in five years’ time, in 10 years’ time,” Mourinho told beIN Sports.

“Just focus on now. He’s absolutely incredible.

“I think going by his age and [and considering] the age of Cristiano, of Messi, [both] over 30, Neymar is 27… when you go to the market level and age is also a factor, I think he’s the most valuable player in the world.

“In a hypothetical transfer, he’s the most expensive player in football now.

“In terms of his qualities, [he is] unbelievable. One word is enough. It means everything.”

Mbappe scored the opener in PSG’s 3-1 win over Marseille in Le Classique before linking up with the France squad for their opening Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Iceland.

Speaking at a media conference on Monday, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps endorsed the young forward’s maturity and ability to cope with close attention from opposition players.

“He has such abilities that he may face some tough challenges on the pitch. He’s ready to deal with that kind of thing,” Deschamps said.

“I cannot say that he had disproportionate reactions so far. He reacts because it’s never pleasant.

“He deals well with those situations though. He’s used to it. It’s something he has experienced since the beginning of his career and he will be subjected to this his entire career because of what he’s able to do on the pitch.”

Juventus omit Ronaldo and suffer first Serie A defeat of season

Juventus – minus Champions League hero Cristiano Ronaldo – fell to their first Serie A defeat of the season as they suffered a shock loss at Genoa.

Juve’s Paulo Dybala (centre) is comforted by former Juve player Stefano Sturaro (right)

Former Juve player Stefano Sturaro curled in the opener in the 72nd minute before Goran Pandev made sure of the win for the mid-table side with a powerful finish nine minutes from time.

“I expected a different Juventus,” said coach Massimiliano Allegri referring to the 1-1 draw earlier in the season.

“We did not put in a good performance.”

Juve had last lost in the top flight on 22 April 2018 and this season had dropped points on only three occasions prior to Sunday’s game.

The home side made a good start when Christian Kouame forced a good save from former Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin before they had penalty decision overturned by VAR. The video technology also overturned Juve striker Paulo Dybala’s goal for an offside in the build-up.

Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick in Juve’s 3-2 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid in midweek, was left out of the matchday squad.

Juventus remain 18 points clear of second-placed Napoli, who play Udinese at 17:00 GMT.

Messi edges closer to Ronaldo’s La Liga record as Barcelona beat Real Betis

The Argentine striker opened the scoring with a free-kick before notching twice more from close range.

Lionel Messi needs just one more hat-trick to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s La Ligarecord of 34 after scoring three times for Barcelona against Real Betis on Sunday.

The Catalan giants cruised to a 4-1 victory at Benito Villamarin Stadium, with Luis Suarez notching Barca’s other goal to equal Diego Forlan as the joint-highest Uruguayan in La Liga history.

Messi slammed home a 25th-minute free-kick to claim a 1-0 lead before firing in two clinical finishes from close range, including a delightful chip over Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez for his third, to round off a stunning performance and bag his 33rd hat-trick in the Spanish top flight.

And it is surely now only a matter of time before Messi draws level with his Portuguese rival in the La Liga hat-trick count after Ronaldo moved to Serie Achampions Juventus last summer.

Real Madrid have struggled considerably since his departure having already sacked two managers in Julen Lopitagui and Santiago Solari, crashed out of both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey and effectively conceded the La Liga title.

Barca now have a 10-point lead over Atletico Madrid and a 12-point lead over Real, and their talisman Messi has played a considerable role in their dominant title defence.

The Argentina international has now scored 27 league goals – more than anyone else in Europe’s top five leagues this term.

Remarkably, he has also scored more direct free-kick goals (four) and more goals from outside the box (seven) than any of his competitors those competitions.

But while Messi enjoyed a landmark night on Sunday evening, Barcelona did not have everything their own way despite the final score.

The league leaders only had 43.9 per cent of possession which is the lowest share of the ball they have had in any La Liga game since the 2004-05 campaign.

They also only registered three more shots than their opponents – 16 compared to Betis’ 13 – although only three of the home side’s efforts hit the target.

Barca next play Catalan rivals Espanyol after the international break and then face Villarreal before hosting Atletico on April 6.

Should Ernesto Valverde’s side win that game, it could effectively tie up the league title with seven games to spare.

HCMC football positive but worries still there

After the first 3 rounds of V.League 2019, both HCMC FC and Saigon FC showed a positive performance.

In the previous season, both two teams had to struggle hard to avoid relegation and just finished their goal at the last round of the season. Thus, when HCMC FC surprisingly got 3 continuous wins and stood on the first position of the ranking, and Saigon FC with a little less positive result as they won 2 and ranked on the 5th position, they made a large number of audiences amazed.

Although the impressive beginning of two Ho Chi Minh City-based football teams makes other clubs at V.League surprised, many people think it is just a phenomenon. Actually, losers of HCMC FC and Saigon FC in the previous two rounds are not very strong.

Even coach Nguyễn Thành Công of Saigon FC stated after the win over Hoang Anh Gia Lai right at Pleiku stadium: “The two continuous victories makes us so happy. However, the league is still long and Saigon FC is not a strong team, thus, without the best concentration and efforts, negative results will come to us”.

Meanwhile, HCMC FC’s players revealed: “Standing on the top position of the ranking is either a worry because other teams will pay more attention to us in the coming rounds, but at present we are enjoying our achievements first, challenges are a story of the future”.

Didier Drogba and Cafu play in unique match at Special Olympics to celebrate inclusion

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba and World Cup hero Cafu played against each another in a unique match at the Special Olympics World Games to celebrate inclusion.

Didier Drogba scored 164 goals in 381 games for Chelsea in all competitions

The game, which saw World Games athletes play alongside the football legends, was part of a series of Unified Sports Experiences in Abu Dhabi which are designed to promote inclusion and break down barriers.

Drogba, 41, was the first to join the game, and by the time Cafu, 48, arrived there were almost 250 international caps-worth of experience on the pitch.

Both players have won the Champions League – Drogba with Chelsea and Cafu with AC Milan – and both showed signs of their quality during the game.

At one point Drogba looked sure to spark a goal for his side, only for the double World Cup-winning Brazilian to make a tackle.

Former AC Milan defender Cafu won two World Cups with Brazil

This was only the second of many Unified Sports Experiences planned during the Games, which involves athletes with intellectual disabilities.

“The importance is to show these kids how important they are in front of all society,” Cafu said.

“I hope the inspiration will be for these kids who will have the opportunity to see me and Drogba together like this in the Special Olympics.

“I hope we can give great motivation to these kids.”

Drogba said: “Since I retired from football, this is the first time that I have played here in the UAE and it felt really good.

“I’m inspired by joining and meeting the Special Olympic athletes. This is a life lesson for me and they have chosen us to be in their team.

“Sports is so powerful for bringing people together. I want to say to everyone that we should all support People of Determination today and promote togetherness and tolerance.”

NFL stars will give an American football clinic during the Games, while Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix is set to give a sprint clinic as part of the initiative.

Great Britain meanwhile claimed their first gold medals of the Games the day after the opening ceremony, with Ciaran Kelly and the relay team triumphant in Dubai.

Fifa Club World Cup: Revised tournament approved despite top European clubs saying they will boycott

Fifa has approved a revised 24-team Club World Cup starting in 2021 despite top European clubs saying they would boycott the tournament.

Real Madrid beat Al Ain to win the 2018 Club World Cup

The new competition is expected to include eight teams from Europe.

It will run every four years and take place from June to July in the slot currently used for the World Cup warm-up event, the Confederations Cup.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said he was “extremely happy” after the Fifa Council backed his plan on Friday.

“Now the world will see a real Club World Cup where fans will see the best teams in the world compete to be crowned the real world champions,” he said.

The Club World Cup is currently held every December and features seven teams from six confederations, but the competition is largely ignored by European fans.

As well as eight European clubs, the new tournament would see six teams from South America, three each from Africa, Asia and North and Central America and one from Oceania.

It has been suggested each club could earn £50m from taking part.

The European Club Association (ECA) says any new competitions should be part of an agreed framework for the international match calendar post-2024.

ECA board members, including Manchester United’s chief executive Ed Woodward, signed a letter expressing concerns, which was revealed earlier on Friday.

“[We are] firmly against any potential approval of a revised CWC – no ECA clubs would take part,” it said.

When asked if he was concerned about staging a new Club World Cup without any of Europe’s elite clubs, Infantino said: “We hope that all the best teams will participate and we’ve had some very positive discussions with Uefa.

“But it was our responsibility to take a decision because we have to deal with the organisational matters – it is only two years away.”

The Fifa Council also decided that it would be “feasible” to expand the Qatar 2022 World Cup from 32 to 48 teams.

World football’s governing body voted to expand the 2026 World Cup – which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States – to 48 teams in 2017.

The council will now discuss potential additional hosts to Qatar and a final decision will be made at a Fifa congress in Paris in June.

“If it happens, fantastic. If it doesn’t happen, fantastic also,” said Infantino.

The ECA’s letter was addressed to Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin, who has been asked to explain the position at the Fifa Council meeting, which is taking place in Miami.

The letter, obtained by BBC Sport, stated that there should be no changes to the current fixed international match calendar (IMC), which runs until 2024, and raised concerns about fixture congestion.

It said: “We wish to restate the position of ECA: (a) ECA is unwilling to consider any new or significantly revised competition prior to a holistic assessment of the IMC post-2024 being conducted and an agreement as to its underlying principles being reached; and (b) in any event, a Club World Cup in June 2021, as proposed by Fifa, is not acceptable in light of the existing competitions and the IMC, which is fixed until 2024.”

According to a Fifa document seen by Associated Press, it has been proposed the tournament would run from 17 June to 4 July, with 2022 World Cup qualifiers (31 May to 8 June) preceding it and the African Cup of Nations and Concacaf Gold Cup possibly taking place from 5 July to 31 July.

Fifa said it was aware of concerns of “serious interference with critical matches” but added that members of its own task force “felt that it was feasible to play the Club World Cup” during that period.

Champions League quarter-final draw: Man Utd face Barcelona, City tackle Tottenham & Liverpool land Porto

Red Devils must tackle Lionel Messi in the last eight, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus will be facing Dutch surprise package Ajax.

Manchester United will face Lionel Messi and Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League quarter-finals, while Tottenham take on Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have landed Porto in the last eight and Juventus will be looking for more magic from Cristiano Ronaldo against Ajax.

There was a good chance, with four sides still in the competition, that an all-English affair would be put in place.

ity and Spurs came out of the hat together and will need no introduction to one another as they prepare to lock horns in pursuit of European glory.

Pep Guardiola is looking to lead the Blues to a first Champions League crown, having previously claimed the trophy on two occasions with Barcelona.

The mercurial talents of Messi helped him to those successes and the Argentine will be looking for the fifth triumph of his remarkable career in 2019.

That quest must go through Old Trafford after seeing Barca paired with United.

The Red Devils had initially been pencilled in to travel to Camp Nou for the first leg of a heavyweight contest, but that will now be staged in Manchester due to the need for a fixture swap .

With City also drawn second in their meeting with Spurs, two near neighbours cannot be at home on the same night or on back-to-back evenings.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will, therefore, welcome Messi and Co to Old Trafford before looking to finish the job and book a semi-final berth in Catalunya – with the former United striker returning to the scene of his 1999 Treble-winning exploits.

Liverpool will also be looking to reach that stage having suffered final heartache against Real Madrid last season.

The Reds overcame Bayern Munich in the last 16 and will be feeling confident heading into a two-legged tie with Porto.

Juventus, meanwhile, know that they can call upon the services of five-time winner Ronaldo in their ongoing pursuit of a first European Cup win since 1996.

Their opponents the last time they lifted an iconic piece of silverware were Ajax – who they defeated on penalties at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The Dutch giants have been something of a surprise package in this season’s competition, with the notable scalp of Real Madrid – fresh from three successive triumphs – claimed in the previous round.

While his former employers proved to be no match for the men from Amsterdam, Ronaldo will be seeking to add to the hat-tricks heroics which saw him single-handedly down Atletico Madrid when Juve are reunited with Eredivisie opponents.

If the Portuguese can inspire more progress for the Bianconeri, there will be no meeting for him with eternal rival Messi in the semi-finals.

The draw for that stage has already determined that the victors in Juve’s meeting with Ajax will take on Tottenham or Manchester City in the last four.

That leaves Manchester United or Barcelona to take on Liverpool or Porto in the second semi, with a place in a Madrid showpiece at Wanda Metropolitano on June 1 up for grabs.

Champions League quarter-final draw in full:

Ajax vs Juventus

Liverpool vs Porto

Tottenham vs Man City

The first legs of the quarter-final ties will take place on 9 and 10 April, with the return dates being held a week later.

Paul Scholes quits Oldham: ‘Sadness at what might have been’

When it was discovered towards the end of January that Paul Scholes was in talks to become Oldham’s new manager, the general reaction was a combination of obvious surprise and then acceptance that this would be an appointment that made sense.

Paul Scholes quit as Oldham manager after 31 days at the League Two club

Less than eight weeks later, the news of Scholes’ resignation is being digested.

In between there has been one victory, followed by three draws and three defeats.

There have also been arguments, broken promises and disenchantment that cut so deep that one source close to the former England and Manchester United midfielder said his position had become “untenable”.

And, as anyone who has watched Scholes’ withering condemnation of Manchester United and their managers over the past few years on TV knows, when he feels something is wrong, the 44-year-old does not hold back.

Wind back to Saturday, 16 February.

Scholes sat in what passes for a press room at Boundary Park. Space was tight. Four hours earlier, the same room had been used for a team meeting to discuss Oldham’s tactics for the day’s League Two match against Crewe.

Instructions had been delivered. To an extent they had been executed. On an awful pitch, Oldham had taken a 23rd-minute lead through Callum Lang. But they had been hanging on when George Ray scored an injury-time equaliser.

Scholes, as he had done for most of the game, tucked his chin into his top and accepted his fate with barely a shrug.

Asked afterwards if he had wondered, at any point, what on earth he was doing there; why he was putting himself through such stress when he clearly doesn’t need the money, Scholes responded in typically understated fashion. “Yep,” he said. “All week.”

He didn’t know it at the time but life was to get no better.

Paul Scholes took over with the Latics 14th in League Two and leaves with them in the same position

That same Saturday, Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam strolled around Boundary Park in a striking electric blue suit.

He was polite, courteous, happy to chat. But this did not appear to be a man who likes to take a back seat. There had been plenty of rumours before Scholes was appointed that Lemsagam was not afraid of getting heavily involved in team affairs.

It is not hard to work out, in his damning statement confirming he was quitting, what Scholes meant when he said: “Unfortunately it became clear that I would not be able to operate as intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role.”

Lemsagam is said to have been hurt and upset by the statement. Scholes had told his boss of his intention to quit on Wednesday evening. After that, he refused to accept calls.

The crux of the matter, BBC Sport has been told, was Lemsagam’s interaction with Oldham’s first-team squad.

Scholes felt strongly this was his domain.

Owning a professional lower league club is not a lucrative experience. Understandably, the owner micro-manages. He also likes to chat. He chats to the office staff. He chats to the cleaners. He chats to everyone. This includes players, coaches, physios. Without truly knowing it, Lemsagam was regularly crossing a line.

His previous managers – specifically Richie Wellens and Frankie Bunn – did not like it but largely kept their thoughts to themselves.

Scholes, blunt, experienced and financially secure, did not need to adopt the same stance.

It is understood harsh words were exchanged on more than one occasion. A relationship that needed to be strong gradually worsened.

Players were given contracts Scholes knew nothing about. The pitch was in such a state there was no chance of playing the kind of passing football he would instinctively want to implement.

For Scholes, what had seemed like the dream of managing his hometown club had turned into a nightmare.

Abdallah Lemsagam said Scholes “will have my backing 100%” when the ex-England midfielder was appointed

On Tuesday, Scholes, feeling distinctly under the weather, took his place on the touchline for an away game at Lincoln.

The temperature was freezing. Someone present said Scholes looked like an Eskimo on the touchline. As had been the case against Crewe five games earlier, he barely made a gesture as his team slipped to an expected defeat to the league leaders.

For Scholes, in many ways, it was a grim night.

Fans from both sides went on social media to suggest Scholes was unable to adjust to managing players at a level far below the one he was used to.

This assessment is unfair. Scholes quit long before a worthwhile judgement on his abilities could be made.

Throughout his illustrious club career, Scholes played for one man, Sir Alex Ferguson, whose control over the dressing room was unquestioned. At Oldham, this proved an illusion.

As positions became entrenched and the arguments with his owner became worse, Scholes concluded the hassle was just not worth it.

On Wednesday, having reflected on the futility of it all, Scholes tendered his resignation and severed communication.

Lemsagam fretted. He knew such a sudden end to an appointment made so recently, amid so much fanfare, would reflect badly on him and his club. He wanted the chance to talk Scholes round.

As each hour passed, his hope diminished. Just before 17:00 GMT on Thursday, it came to an end with a searing statement as Scholes explained it was “with great regret” he had not been able to “at least” see out the full 18 months of his contract as manager of “the club I have supported all my life”.

All that is left now is sadness and thoughts of what might have been.

Maurizio Sarri says Olivier Giroud ‘very important’ for Chelsea after striker’s hat-trick

Maurizio Sarri said Olivier Giroud remains a “very important” player for Chelsea after his hat-trick against Dynamo Kiev.

Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick against Dynamo Kiev

Giroud’s triple took him top of the overall goalscoring charts for this year’s competition, as Chelsea raced into the quarter-finals with a 5-0 win in Ukraine and an 8-0 aggregate scoreline.

The striker has found himself on the fringes of the Blues’ first team in the Premier League since the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain on loan in January, but Sarri told reporters after the game he remains an important figure in his plans.

He said: “In the last period, every time he has been on the pitch, he was able to play really very well. He has scored nine goals in this competition.

Sarri’s Chelsea will find out their Europa League quarter-final opponents on Friday

“Olivier is, for us, a very important player. I am really very happy for him and for the hat-trick, and I am really very happy with him.”

Sarri was equally delighted with the performance of his side, who did not let their 3-0 lead coming into the match deter them from equalling their biggest European away win since the 1970s, scoring five on the night in Ukraine without reply.

He said: “We started very well, I think, and we wanted to start in this way because it was really very important to score after the result at Stamford Bridge.

“We were able to score after five minutes. So, for the opponents, it was really a very difficult situation. I think that we played a very, very good first half. In the second half, we managed the result. But I think [it was] a wonderful performance for 90 minutes.”
