Kepa Arrizabalaga: Chelsea goalkeeper fined & apologises for Wembley incident

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been fined a week’s wages and apologised for refusing to be substituted during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.

Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for a club record £71m in August 2018

The Spaniard refused to be replaced by Willy Caballero at Wembley.

“Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation,” Kepa said in a Chelsea statement.

Manager Maurizio Sarri said he and Kepa had since had “a good conversation”.

Sarri, who reacted angrily when Kepa refused to leave the field towards the end of extra time, also said the incident had been “a misunderstanding”.

But he added: “Kepa realises he made a big mistake in the way he reacted.

“He has apologised to me, his team-mates and the club. It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for me this matter is now closed.

“The team performance as a whole was extremely positive and it is a shame to see how this incident has overshadowed our efforts in what was a very competitive cup final.”

Kepa, the club’s record £71m signing, defied Sarri’s attempt to substitute him for Caballero before Manchester City won on penalties. The Italian appeared furious and walked down the tunnel before quickly returning.

The 24-year-old former Athletic Bilbao player said: “I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my team-mates and to the club.

“I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans. I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate.”

The club will donate Kepa’s fine to the Chelsea Foundation.

A Real loner: How Bale has become a pariah in Madrid

The Welshman has failed to learn Spanish in almost six years and is increasingly isolated within the Merengue dressing room.

During his brief spell with Real Sociedad, former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland sharpshooter John Aldridge assured that he needed to learn just three words in Spanish in order to get by on the pitch. Once he had mastered the ubiquitous phrase hijo de puta (son of a bitch), Aldridge joked, he felt more than comfortable communicating with team-mates, referees and opponents alike.

Fast forward three decades and little seems to have changed for Brits abroad. The general consensus is that after almost six years in Madrid Gareth Bale still has severe difficulties in gelling with his multi-national dressing room companions.

Those issues, moreover, combined with a noticeable drop in performances on the pitch itself, now threaten to spell the end of the Welsh wizard’s time at the Bernabeu as he becomes ever more isolated.

According to those closest to Bale he rarely integrates with the rest of the squad away from games or training, preferring more solitary pursuits. “We call him The Golfer,” goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois revealed in a recent interview with HLN .

“I would say he has so much talent, but that it is such a shame that so often that talent is blocked from shining. I live like somebody who is born and bred in Madrid. I eat late, I go bed late… it is their way of life.

“The other night we had a dinner with the entire squad. But Bale and (Toni) Kroos did not turn up. They reckoned the dinner was too late at night.

“We had arranged to be in the restaurant at 9.30pm and we started out the meal around 10.15pm and by midnight we were having coffee. We go to bed at around 1am. We have to train every morning at 11am. I think that is a perfect time.

“But Bale had told us ‘I am not coming to join you, guys. I go to bed at 11’.”

Marcelo too has let slip his frustration at trying to communicate with Bale, who has taken Kiko Casilla’s place at his side in the dressing room. “[Kiko] sat next to me and we used to talk all day, now I have nobody to talk to,” he confided toEsporte Interativo .

“Bale is now on that side but we have to speak in English, we communicate via gestures and with three words, hi, hello and goodbye.” A Madrid insider was even more scathing of the team’s shrinking violet after netting against Atletico: “He has less blood (passion) than an eel”.

On the pitch, meanwhile, Bale has lost his privileged position as an undisputed member of the Madrid starting line-up. The Welshman has not completed 90 minutes for his team since December’s Club World Cup final win over Al-Ain and has started just twice in their last seven outings, as Santiago Solari continues to place his faith in the raw, electric talents of Vinicius Junior.

Although he scored a hugely controversial penalty off the bench on Sunday to win the three points at Levante, reports in Spain suggest that Bale used up his final credit in an ineffective cameo in the shock home defeat to Girona on February 17.

It is the much-maligned Karim Benzema who has stepped up to score the goals once netted in such startling quantities by Cristiano Ronaldo, with Bale’s 20 Liga appearances this term yielding a disappointing seven strikes.

Benzema is the old head Madrid want around the Bernabeu to continue supporting youngsters like Vinicius and Marco Asensio. Even at 18 the former Flamengo man is showing an easygoing, extroverted personality that has made him an instant hit with the dressing room, even appearing in Ronaldo’s place alongside compatriots Casemiro and Marcelo in the travel photo the Blancos take as a matter of superstition prior to Champions League away games.

The Welshman has become expendable, meanwhile, and could well be used as a make-weight this summer to facilitate the transfer of Eden Hazard, Christian Eriksen or another of Madrid’s expensive targets. Despite his many achievements, it is likely that few of the Bernabeu would mourn his departure with any great vehemence.

British players over the years have proved themselves extremely awkward travellers. With a few notable exceptions – the likes of David Platt and Gary Lineker in a different generation, and young bucks such as Jadon Sancho in the current day – they have found it difficult to adapt to foreign climes, holding a sense of being out of place that often has adverse consequences on the field.

Bale has doubtlessly overcome those obstacles to become one of the cornerstones of Madrid’s last four Champions League victories, a stunning feat by any measure.

But he has never been able to shed that feeling of failing to really belong to his adopted home, and truly integrating into an unfamiliar culture. And his current mood was clear to see on Sunday when he refused to celebrate his goal with Lucas Vazquez who had come over to embrace his team-mate.

With no Spanish to speak of, no friends and fewer and fewer minutes on the pitch, Bale’s reasons to stay at Madrid beyond the current season are fast fading away.

The portrait of HCMC Football Club – Hope to change their look

After 2 disappointing seasons, the fans of Ho Chi Minh City FC continue to expect to a more positive outlook at V.League 2019. Could coach Chung Hae Seong make the fans forget gloomy past and hope for a bright future?

Targeting a position in top 3 but coach Toshiya Miura and HCMC FC just finished 12th at V.League 2018, the same with where they were in the previous season when they first appeared at the highest league of Vietnam football. It should be remembered that in order to prepare for V.League 2018, HCMC FC made big spendings with VND-billion-worth signings such as Ngọc Thịnh, Phi Sơn, Văn Thuận, e.g. In addition, poor results together with boring playing styles were also explanations for the small number of audiences on stands. Consequently, coach Miura had to left although his contract was still 1 more year valid.

The previous two seasons at V.League are forgettable to HCMC FC, especially at V.League 2018. But with the love for the club, the small number of audiences are still keeping expectation to a more positive season. At V.League 2019, HCMC FC continues to invest in human resources on both the pitch and technical area, proving through their stars such as Ngọc Thịnh, Phi Sơn, Văn Thuận. Besides, the club also lured new faces like Hoàng Thịnh, Thanh Thắng, Tùng Quốc and foreign players such as Than Quảng Ninh’s former striker Joel Vinicius, SHB Đà Nẵng’s former mid defender Epassi Ewonde…on the side of present one Matis – their best strike in the second half of the previous season.

On the coaching bench, HCMC FC continue to lay their trust on foreign elements as the club has appointed not only coach Chung Hae Seong but also his assistants from Korea. Used to work in a V.League season, coach Chung knows well professionalism of Vietnamese players. For his familiarity, HCMC FC’s leaders expect that coach Chung will bring a new vitality to the team, through which gaining trust back and attracting a more crowded number of audiences.

It still needs more time for such expectation to be satisfied as the performance of coach Chung Hae Seong at Hoang Anh Gia Lai was not very corresponding to what is expected, and the Korean coach had not left a significant impression in the playing style of Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

But the fans should believe in coach Chung Hae Seong because at least he has more advantages at the owner of Thong Nhat stadium than at Hoang Anh Gia Lai. That is, HCMC FC possess a seasoned, experienced and quality force in all 3 lines. Thus, in the new environment, coach Chung Haesong is said to be able to help HCMC FC play in a sublimating way like his  countryman Park Hang Seo has made for national teams.

Hoping to Chung Hae Seong’s coaching talent

In 2018 season, Mr.Chung Hae Seong was appointed as the technical director of Hoang Anh Gia Lai. As an extension from the director’s rights, Mr.Chung was also entitled to give out professional determination despite of coach Duong Minh Ninh. With the appearance of Mr.Chung, Hoang Anh Gia Lai fearlessly targeted a position in top 5, but the team played boringly in the whole season. They were evenly pushed into the competition to escape from elimination group at the end of the season, and Mr.Chung was said to be one of the main reasons for this.

However, the Korean coach should not be completely blamed as he had left a certain impression in the team’s strategies. There are several reasons for the arrival of Mr.Chung at HCMC FC, and the main reason rumored is that Hoang Anh Gia Lai could no longer satisfy his USD20.000/month salary. Coach Chung Hae Seong is expected to help HCMC FC complete the unfinished goals of the former coach Miura, and we have to wait until the ball is kicked off.

Claude Puel: Leicester City ‘part company’ with manager after 16 months in charge

Leicester City have “parted company” with manager Claude Puel.

City lost 4-1 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday in what proved to be Puel’s final game after 16 months in charge.

Puel, 57, leaves the club 12th in the Premier League having lost five of their last six league games.

The Frenchman guided Leicester to a ninth-place finish in the Premier League in his first season but the club are now looking for their fourth permanent manager in 23 months.

Saturday’s defeat meant Leicester have lost four consecutive home Premier League games for the first time since January 2000 and conceded the first goal in 19 Premier League matches this season – more than any other side.

Puel was appointed on a three-year deal in October 2017, succeeding Craig Shakespeare who in turn followed 2015-16 Premier League winning manager Claudio Ranieri in managing the club.

The former Lyon boss had been dismissed by Southampton in June 2017 and arrived at Leicester four months later with the club third from bottom of the league.

He led them to ninth in the table, just their second top-10 finish in the Premier League since 2000.

Real Madrid know Neymar isn’t for sale, says PSG president Al-Khelaifi

Speculation surrounding a move back to La Liga continues to circulate, but the French side will not allow their Brazilian star to leave any time soon.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi says there is no point in Real Madrid making an offer for Neymar this summer because he is not for sale.

The Brazilian attacker has been constantly linked to a return to Spain since forcing his way out of Barcelona to make a world-record transfer to the French champions in 2017.

Madrid, having tried to sign him from Santos before he headed for Camp Nou, are said to be still eyeing Neymar, while Barca are reportedly interested in taking him back.

The 27-year-old has been in sensational form since his arrival, scoring a total of 48 goals in 53 games in all competitions for PSG and president Al-Khelaifi says Madrid have already been warned that he will not be allowed to leave this year.

“Neither Real Madrid, nor any other club in the world, needs to call us about Neymar or any other player,” he told Marca.

“Real Madrid know perfectly well that Neymar is not for sale and that the player won’t leave PSG this summer. We have a fantastic relationship with Neymar and his father and it is built to last a long time.”

Neymar has been out of action since January with a foot injury and could be missing for at least another month. Asked how his recovery is going, Al-Khelaifi replied: “Very good. He’s an extraordinary player and person. He shows a great ability to sacrifice and great character to overcome this new injury.

“He has been recovering in Paris, also in Barcelona and now in Brazil. It’s what was expected since the start by the club’s doctors.”

Neymar is not the only world famous attacker playing for Thomas Tuchel’s Ligue 1 leaders, with Kylian Mbappe continuing to make headlines. The 20-year-old France star has scored 22 times in just 20 Ligue 1 games this season and the president believes he has alread sealed his place as a PSG icon.

“Kylian is already a club legend. What he has done at just 20 years of age, having won a World Cup and become one of the five best players in the world alongside Neymar, is exceptional,” he said. “In Paris, everyone loves him, he is at home and he knows that he has everything he could want to make history at PSG. He has the ability to make the Parc des Princes dream and all of the young people who love sport. The relationship between PSG and Mbappe is long-term because there is a very strong mutual trust.”

‘You don’t want to give anyone an excuse’ – Solskjaer applauds Pogba’s social media restraint

The caretaker manager has no doubt of his star man’s efforts, but thinks it is good that the midfielder has taken steps to shield himself from critics.

Paul Pogba’s apparent decrease in social media use has pleased caretaker Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as it means the midfielder has opened himself less to criticism.

The midfielder has been criticised by media in the past for a variety of off-the-field issues, including his social media use, as a sign he is not serious enough about the game.

It is a situation that has become less of an issue in recent weeks as United have not lost in the league since Jose Mourinho was sacked, with Pogba leading the Red Devils resurgence.

Pogba has scored nine goals and added six assists under Solskjaer and ahead of the club’s match against Liverpool, Solskjaer is happy to see Pogba and his team-mates not opening themselves up for criticism by appearing to not focus on the upcoming contest.

“Paul has always been a larger-than-life character. He has a fantastic family, but you don’t do yourself any favours,” Solskjaer told media.

“You don’t want to give anyone an excuse really so, of course, you don’t go to the Brit awards this week.

“We know leading up to the other game against Liverpool there were stories about players not being focused. It is not about that. We know they are focused, we know they are doing their best, but he does help himself by toning it down a bit and that is just Paul being Paul.”

Pogba did not feature in that first Liverpool match, which was a 3-1 defeat at Anfield that saw Mourinho sacked following the contest.

Not getting off the bench was the culmination of the midfielder finding himself on the outside looking in on Mourinho’s final lineups in the Premier League, but Solskjaer suggested there may have been other reasons for him featuring less.

“Knowing him he wants to win, he wants to be the best,” Solksjaer said. “You would be surprised by the number of minutes he’s played. Apart from David [de Gea] and maybe Nemanja [Matic] he has played the most minutes for us in the league.

“There was a perception that Jose left him out all the time. Maybe he does not have the energy to do it. Who knows?”

Pogba has also been slammed in the past for focus on his appearance, with the accusations again coming down that he does not put the same effort into his football.

But Solskjaer takes a different stance on the matter, believing those things make Pogba happy, which in turn makes him more productive.

“He is a leader in training, he is a leader in the dressing room,” Solskjaer said.

“Players are allowed to be themselves. He spends a lot of energy being a leader on and off the pitch. If you want the nice car, different haircut.

“I can’t do anything about my grey hair, but it is not a problem that have whatever haircut you want. It has never been a problem with Paul.

“I remember when he was 16 he wanted to feel good. If you feel good you will play well.”

Javier Hernandez’s goal sparks controversy in West Ham win over Fulham

Fulham fell deeper into relegation trouble with a 3-1 Premier League defeat by West Ham United at London Stadium on Friday.

Claudio Ranieri’s 19th-placed side made the ideal start, grabbing the lead in the third minute with former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel scoring from close range after he had earlier missed a golden chance.

There was controversy about West Ham’s equaliser when Mexican striker Javier Hernandez stooped to head in from close range but replays suggested the ball went in off his arm.

Issa Diop‘s first Premier League goal, with a header five minutes before the break, put West Ham in charge and while Fulham produced some decent football after the break, they rarely threatened.

Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini made their returns for West Ham as substitutes.

But it was not until stoppage time that the Hammers made sure of the win as Michail Antonio powerfully headed home a cross from Arnautovic.

Hernandez, who hadn’t scored since Dec. 8, is the first Mexican player to score 50 goals in the Premier League, reaching that mark in 150 games.

Not surprisingly, Ranieri was upset about West Ham’s equaliser.

“We created very good chances and it was a pity that the referee didn’t see the handball. VAR is very important for next season,” said the Italian.

“But we never give up. We concentrate now for the next match. It’s important to recover very soon the energy and psychologically as well.

“I change so many times, five at the back, four, to try to find a solution. But when the other teams have more quality and more experience it’s very tough. We continue to try to find the solution,” he said.

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted that Hernandez’s goal should have been ruled out.

“From my position I couldn’t see the handball, I have seen it since and it is handball. Nobody saw it very clearly at the time, there was not too many complaints. I don’t think that the goal decided the game,” he said.

“It was a big pity with the goal, the referee was covered,” Pellegrini added . “I hope with the VAR next season it will be better. I didn’t see but I watched it on the screen. Maybe also the other players didn’t see it, and maybe of the West Ham players only Chicharito knew the truth.

“Now football is so fast and you have so many players in the box, for the referee it’s very difficult to watch everything, so VAR could be better. It’s important in England to have VAR to help the referee.”

Former West Ham defender Matthew Upson told BBC Radio that Hernandez used his arm on purpose.

“It’s an intentional handball, Hernandez knew what he was doing,” Upson said.

It was Hernandez’s fifth league goal of the season. He scored 37 Premier League goals for Manchester United from 2010-2014 before a loan to Real Madrid for a season. After two seasons in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, Hernandez returned to England with West Ham in 2017.

Inter ‘very close’ to sealing Godin switch, confirms Marotta

The Serie A side look set to secure the services of the Uruguay international and prise him away from La Liga at the end of the season.

Inter are “very close” to confirming a deal for Atletico Madrid defender and captain Diego Godin, according to Nerazzurri CEO Giuseppe Marotta.

Uruguay international Godin has been linked consistently with a move from La Liga to the San Siro in recent months, with the switch apparently now all but confirmed by the former Juventus official.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna, Marotta revealed that it is only a matter of time before the 33-year-old arrives at the club.

“We are very close to closing the deal,” the 61-year-old stated. “Soon, an official announcement will come.”

Godin starred on Wednesday night for Atletico as he notched the second of two late goals to hand his side a vital Champions League advantage against Juventus with a 2-0 win against the Scudetto holders.

His heroics against Inter’s domestic rivals did not go unnoticed in Italy either, with fans turning up for Thursday’s game sporting the centre-back’s name on their shirts.

Initially arriving in Europe in 2007 with fellow Spanish side Villarreal, Godin has played his entire domestic career since in the country, having made the switch to Wanda Metropolitano in 2010.

Under Diego Simeone, he has helped transform Atletico into one of La Liga’s heavyweight sides, enjoying success both at home and abroad, with a domestic title and two Europa League winners’ medals to his name.

Neil Lennon recalls signing Virgil van Dijk for 2m euro at Celtic

Neil Lennon explains the story behind how he managed to sign Virgil van Dijk for just 2m euro when manager of Celtic.

Celtic signed Virgil van Dijk for 2m euro in 2013

Van Dijk was snapped up as a 21-year-old for the fee back in 2013 when Lennon was impressed with his performance for FC Groningen against Ajax.

The Dutchman’s career has gone from strength-to-strength, moving from Celtic to Southampton and then to Liverpool for £75m in 2017 – a world-record fee for a defender.

Van Dijk is set to spearhead Liverpool’s defence when they take on Manchester United, live on Sky Sports on Sunday.

Lennon hasn’t been surprised about the direction the defender’s career has taken.

“He was outstanding,” he told Soccer AM.

“When the recruitment team showed me videos of him, I thought ‘he’s going to be next the Rio Ferdinand’ – but watching him, I was thinking there must be something wrong with him as I went over to watch him play against Ajax and I was looking around thinking: ‘why are there no scouts here?’.

“I knew we had to get the deal done quickly. We ended up getting him for 2m euro. From the first day in training he was unbelievable. He had everything.

“I said to him on the first day: ‘enjoy yourself here, son, you won’t be here long’.

“It amazed me he was in Scotland for so long. Southampton were smart to get him but it amazed me none of the other big clubs came in as he could have played for Real Madrid or Barcelona.”

PSG president: Wenger will not be new sporting director

The former Arsenal boss has been heavily linked with a move to the French capital, but those rumours have been played down.

Arsene Wenger will not become Paris Saint-Germain‘s new sporting director, according to the club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Wenger has been without a job since stepping down as Arsenal boss at the end of last season after 22 years in charge of the Premier League side.

The 68-year-old has stated that he has no plans to retire and his been linked with a number of roles.

Reports earlier this week suggested Wenger had met with PSG chief Al-Khelaifi to discuss a possible move to the Parc Des Princes.

Wenger has been touted as a possible replacement for Antero Henrique, who has been the Ligue 1 side’s sporting director since 2017.

Henrique has often had a difficult relationship with head coach Thomas Tuchel, with the German openly critical of the club’s transfer activity during the January window.

That led to speculation Henrique could be replaced, with Wenger in contention.

However, Al-Khelaifi insists reports of an imminent move for the Frenchman are wide of the mark.

“I have very good relations with Arsene,” he told Le Parisien.

“I’m close to him and I’ve known him for a long time. He is a wonderful manager and coach. He has a very sharp and very complete knowledge of football.

“But we have a sports director, Antero Henrique, in whom I have great confidence.

“I hear the media constantly say that Arsene will come to take this job. It’s too much. Let us work, please.

“Antero does a very good job. He will continue with us. He stays there.”

Wenger was recognised at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco this week with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Paris Saint-Germain will go in search of a fifth successive victory in all competitions when they take on Nimes in Ligue 1 this weekend.

Tuchel’s side are 14 points clear at the top of the table and already look on course to secure a sixth successive domestic title.

They also look set to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after an impressive 2-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in their last 16 first leg earlier this month.
