Madrid are suffering because Benzema is in agony

Zinedine Zidane’s men failed to reclaim top spot in La Liga from Barcelona after slumping to a 2-1 defeat at struggling Real Betis on Sunday night.

Barcelona coach Quique Setien said he wasn’t worried after losing last weekend’s Clasico because there would be many twists and turns left in the title race.

Real Madrid immediately proved him right as they stumbled 2-1 at Real Betis on Sunday, leaving the Catalans two points clear at the top of La Liga, with 11 games to go.

Karim Benzema ended his recent goal drought by converting from the penalty spot but the French forward erred badly for Betis’s late winner as he continued his run of bad form in 2020.

Benzema’s dip in form has coincided with his club’s. Post-Ronaldo Real don’t have many goals in them, so it has fallen on Benzema to carry their attacking threat. He did an admirable job of doing precisely that last year.

However, the goals have dried up since the turn of the year, with just two in his previous 14 outings before the game at the Benito Vilamarin.

Happily, he managed to get on the scoresheet against Betis but, in truth, he struggled again, as did Madrid.

The visitors came into this game on the back of a 2-0 win over Barca and were facing a Betis side that had gone seven games without winning, a dreadful run that had left them sitting just five points clear of the drop zone before kick-off, and with coach Rubi under intense pressure.

However, one thing they can do, one thing they always do, is score at home. Betis hadn’t failed to score in their own backyard since October 2018 and their opening goal felt like it was coming long before it arrived.

Indeed, Marc Bartra should have broken the deadlock but the former Barca defender headed over from just a few yards out.

Rubi could not believe it, imitating the defender’s header in astonishment on the sideline, illustrating how Bartra got underneath the ball.

Then, Thibaut Courtois made an excellent save to keep out a stinging drive from Nabil Fekir, which was bound for the top corner.

Eventually, the hosts got the goal they deserved and it arrived in emphatic fashion from the boot of Sidnei. As Betis appealed for a penalty for a foul on the electric Fekir, the ball broke for the defender in the box and he cracked it past Courtois, nearly breaking the net in the process.

Madrid levelled when Sidnei turned villain and took out Marcelo in the box, with Benzema stepping up to take the penalty instead of usual spot-kick executioner Ramos. Perhaps he thought getting a goal would turn his fortunes around.

He was wrong, though. Benzema may have dispatched the penalty neatly, perfectly in the bottom corner of Joel Robles’s net, but he remained on the fringes of the game until he gifted the hosts a winner.

After veteran midfielder Joaquin had missed a sitter for Betis, Benzema sold Ramos short with a pass inside his own half, allowing Andres Guardado to slip in Cristian Tello through on goal.

Unlike Barta, this former Barca man made no mistake, slotting the ball coolly past Courtois.

Benzema was understandably disgusted with his mistake. It was the first time he had made a mistake leading to a goal in 338 Liga appearances for Madrid, and it appeared to drain him of the little confidence he had gained from his goal.

Little stuck to him, even though build-up play is his forte, and he only managed a paltry two shots, the same as substitute Mariano Diaz, who had just 20 minutes on the pitch.

Benzema’s bad day at the office represented not only a blow to Madrid’s title hopes but also their chances of overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit in next week’s Champions League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad.

After losing at home, they need at least two away goals to go through and there is a huge onus on Benzema to provide them.

When he suffers, Madrid suffer too. And right now, the striker is in agony.

Công Phượng expected to shine on V-League return

After scoring in 3 continuous games, Công Phượng is expected to shine on V-League return day to bring HCMC FC 3 points in the away match in Quảng Nam on March 6th.

HCMC FC will have an away match at Tam Kỳ stadium against Quảng Nam in the opening game of V-League 2020. The target of coach Chung Hae Seong is not anything but 3 points.

HCMC have a very much better preparation than the opponents. The whole team have been preheated with AFC Cup matches, and the most recent is the National Super Cup 2020 game.

Công Phượng is expected to shine in the game

Công Phượng is considered as the main attention in the upcoming match between Quảng Nam and HCMC FC after a long time leaving V-League. The forward born in Nghệ An scored in 3 continuous games, including the 2-2 draw with Yangon United, the 3-2 win over Hougang United and the 1-2 loss against Hanoi FC.

All 3 goals of Công Phượng are done under different ways. This shows the diverse striking skills of the 25-year-old forward.

The great performance of Công Phượng mainly comes from captain Trần Phi Sơn’s impression. With his performance, Phi Sơn is voted as one of five best players of AFC Cup 2019. The harmony of the countrymen duo is a non-skippable highlight in the playing style of the hosts of Thống Nhất stadium. Both of them are expected to shine again in the away match of HCMC in Quảng Nam.

Phi Sơn is the detonator that helps Công Phượng shine

However, stamina of players is a worry of coach Chung Hae Seong. This is one of the main reasons leading to their National Super Cup 2020 defeat. “In the match with Hanoi FC, my players’ fitness seemed to yet recover after AFC Cup. In the first half, we played well, but our stamina went down in the second half. This is a problem that I must consider so as to have the best strategies for the opening game of V-League 2020”, coach Chung Hae Seong revealed after the match.

To Quảng Nam, they have let a range of key players go away, in which the most noticeable case is Hoàng Vũ Samson – the key striker who helped them avoid relegation and rise to the 9th standing in the previou season. Replacement for the Nigeria-originated experienced player is Trịnh Duy Long, a newcomer from Phố Hiến FC. This player used to be the top scorer of National First League 2015.

Comparing present force and performance, it is hard for Quảng Nam to be equal to HCMC FC. Besides, Tam Kỳ stadium is also banned from audiences due to Covid-19. This will be a non-little disadvantage for the hosts. Gaining 1 point from the runners-up of V-League 2019 HCMC FC may be considered as a success of Quảng Nam in the upcoming match.

‘I don’t care what anyone says’ – Ighalo confident after Man Utd double in FA Cup win

The Nigerian attacker has continued to build on his dream move to Old Trafford as he silences those that doubted his potential.

Odion Ighalo has declared he doesn’t care what anyone says, willing he has the belief of his team-mates, manager and fans after scoring a brace in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Derby County in the FA Cup fifth round.

After Luke Shaw opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, Ighalo fired home his side’s second in the 41st minute before wrapping up the victory with another goal in the 70th minute.

The 30-year-old, who only joined the Red Devils on deadline day from Shanghai Shenhua, has now scored three goals across his first six appearances for a club he grew up supporting.

While some initially questioned United’s decision to sign Ighalo, he’s quickly proven his worth and declared he couldn’t care less what pundits may be saying about him.

“I am happy. I want to congratulate the team for a hard fought game,” Ighalo told BT Sport post-match.

“As long as my team-mates believe in me, the boss believes in me and the fans believe in me, I just have to keep going. I don’t care what anyone says.”

Ighalo’s arrival at Old Trafford has coincided with a good run of form for the Red Devils with the club yet to lose when the Nigerian’s been involved and winning both of their games when he’s started.

It’s the stuff of fairytales for Ighalo, who is determined not be overawed by his situation as he looks to pay back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him.

“I am happy to be around this game team, great lads and great manager, I am happy and we are working hard,” Ighalo told BBC Sport.

“We know we need to win the game to go through to do important things this season and end the season well. The start was not the best we can do but after 20-25 minutes we got into the game.

“I used my strength and I am happy the ball went in. For the second, they blocked it then there is nothing I can do apart from shoot.

“I had another shot but did not connect well but the most important thing is that we won. We want to keep the momentum going and make sure we do great this season.”

Manchester United will now face Norwich City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 21 but next host Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 2002 World Cup winner arrived into the country on Wednesday for a charity event, where officials then came to his hotel suite near the capital of Asuncion and allegedly found the documents.

Ronaldinho and his brother were allowed to stay at the hotel but remain under custody by authorities and must report to the attorney general’s office on Thursday morning. Another man who accompained the brothers was arrested.

“[Ronaldinho and his brother] are not being detained, they are still under judicial investigation and they have to testify. Then it will be decided whether they will be arrested or not,” Paraguay’s interior minister Euclides Acevedo told ESPN Brasil.

Acevedo added that Ronaldinho and his brother are cooperating in the investigation and that they “were tricked” by the man arrested.

Ronaldinho’s storied club career included stints at Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Milan.

FA Cup draw: Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea learn quarter-final fates

As the competition approaches the final eight, a draw has already been held to decide the fixtures.

The FA Cup quarter-final draw was held on Wednesday night with the highest-profile match up seeing Chelsea travel to Leicester City later this month.

In the other confirmed fixtures so far, Sheffield United will host Arsenal and Newcastle United welcome current FA Cup holders Manchester City up north.

The final quarter-final will then see Norwich play the winner of Derby County and Manchester United – with that duo to face off in the final last-16 match on Thursday night.

With the Foxes and Blues sitting third and fourth respectively in the Premier League, their quarter-final clash looms as the most enticing with the duo playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the league in February.

Sheffield, meanwhile, will back themselves to edge past the Gunners at home having beaten them at Bramall Lane 1-0 in October last year before drawing 1-1 at the Emirates in January.

Newcastle face the toughest quarter-final test in having to welcome Pep Guardiola’s side to St. James’ Park with City still chasing a treble despite their hopes of a third straight Premier League title being all but over.

Man City beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final in early March and have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Real Madrid 2-1 away from home in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

“The important thing is that we are there. We want to be in the draw. We are in the draw,” Guardiola said after City beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in their FA Cup last-16 clash.

“It is the FA Cup. The league we cannot win. We have two titles, FA Cup and Champions League. We prepare for it and and the end we have success.”

Norwich booked their spot in the quarter-finals after a dramatic victory against Spurs at home on Wednesday. After the match ended 1-1 following extra time, the Canaries held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out with Tottenham failing to convert three of their five spot-kicks.

They will welcome the winner of the FA Cup’s final last-16 clash with Derby hosting the Red Devils at Pride Park on Thursday.

That match will see Rams captain Wayne Rooney face off against United for the first time, with the 34-year-old bagging three goals and contributing two assists since returning to English football with Derby.

UEFA Nations League 2020-21 – format and changes

A number of changes have been made to the 2020-21 edition of the Nations League, both in structure and the ramifications of results.

Each group in the top three divisions has been expanded to four teams each, meaning each division now comprises 16 teams.

This means these teams will no longer have to play international friendlies on Nations League dates, as had previously been the case with an odd number of teams in each group.

Eliminating ‘meaningless’ international friendlies was one of the key driving forces behind the creation of the tournament.

However, the bottom tier will contain seven teams, meaning some friendlies will still be played.

The Nations League also won’t guarantee any places for the 2022 World Cup. In the first edition, four teams qualified directly for Euro 2020.

Now, two of 12 World Cup qualifying play-off places for three spots at the finals in Qatar will be earned through the Nations League.

The best two Nations League group winners who don’t qualify for either the World Cup finals or qualifying play-offs will then go into the play-offs – due to be played in March 2022.

RB Leipzig sorry for ejecting Japanese guests over coronavirus fears

RB Leipzig have apologised to a group of Japanese guests who were asked to leave Sunday’s home match against Bayer Leverkusen amid coronavirus concerns.

Leipzig drew 1-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday

Stewards at the game were told to conduct “increased checks on groups of persons from potential risk areas”.

Germany’s DPA news agency reported that a group of about 20 visitors were told to leave 10 minutes after kick-off.

“We would like to and must apologise for this mistake at this point,” said the Bundesliga club.

“Unfortunately, in this specific case, due to the great uncertainty that currently exists in our country about this topic, a mistake was made in the interpretation of the recommendations to our Japanese guests.”

Germany has reported 150 cases of the virus.

The club have since met with the group – part of a delegation attending a course on sports business in Leipzig – and invited them to attend another game.

In a statement, the delegation said: “We were aware at all times that this incident occurred due to the concern associated with coronavirus, and not due to anything else.”

It said there had been a “constructive exchange” between all parties involved.

Fourth division Saarbrucken create history, join Bayern in cup semi-finals

Holders Bayern Munich laboured into the German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win at Schalke 04 after Saarbrucken became the first fourth division side to reach the last four with a penalty shootout win over Fortuna Duesseldorf on Tuesday.

Bayern, who are aiming for a milestone 20th cup title, were made to work hard by Schalke as the home team missed several chances either side of Joshua Kimmich‘s 40th-minute winner.

Schalke striker Guido Burgstaller hit the crossbar and then had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside before Kimmich volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area.

The home team’s forward Rabbi Matondo missed a sitter with a feeble close-range shot in the 64th minute after a fast break and Bayern were forced to hang on in the closing stages as Schalke piled on the pressure.

Saarbrucken knocked out top-tier opponents Fortuna in the day’s opening fixture as they won the penalty shootout 7-6, with the absorbing contest ending 1-1 after normal and extra time.

Goalkeeper Daniel Batz was Saarbrucken’s hero as he saved five penalties, one in normal time and four in the shootout, to send his side through and spark wild celebrations among the jubilant home fans.

Midfielder Tobias Janicke fired Saarbrucken ahead in the 31st minute with a neat finish before Mathias Jorgensen levelled with a late header to force extra time after Batz had kept out a Rouwen Hennings penalty.

Fortuna missed two chances to win the shootout as Batz denied Kevin Stoger and Matthias Zimmermann and then saved Jorgensen’s spot-kick after Janicke had drilled in Saarbrucken’s final penalty.

In the other two quarter-finals, Bayer Leverkusen entertain Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt are at home to Werder Bremen on Wednesday.

Billy Gilmour produces timely midfield masterclass amid Chelsea injury crisis

Chelsea are suffering something of a crisis in the midfield due to injuries and suspensions and the young Scotsman delivered when it mattered.

It feels almost inconceivable that an 18-year-old could pull the strings at the heart of midfield against the European champions but that’s exactly what Stamford Bridge witnessed in the performance of Billy Gilmour during the FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Tuesday.

Gilmour’s presence on the teamsheet ahead of kick-off will have surprised those who haven’t been watching his development closely, but Frank Lampard justified it ahead of his side’s 2-0 win.

“Billy is playing because he deserves to play,” Lampard said as his headline team news was questioned by the BBC. Gilmour was promoted to Lampard’s squad during the winter break after getting the chance to train in front of the legendary midfielder-cum-coach.

The Scotland youngster stole the show to get his side to the last eight of the FA Cup. It was one of those games that will signpost his talent to the watching football world, producing the goods on the big stage against the team recently crowned the best on the planet.

Lampard knows talent when he sees it but the real credit for Gilmour’s emergence should go to Neil Bath, his scouts and those who did the deal to bring this generational talent down to England.

At 15 years old, Gilmour was already known to BarcelonaBayern Munich and Manchester United as the best young player for Rangers and Scotland.

Chelsea made sure he came to the Cobham Training Academy and he has had a rapid ascension at the club, earning senior appearances in the league and cup.

However, even after starting against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, this was his toughest test yet. That game gave him confidence – now this one gives him even more.

“It was a good match, I’ve been training very hard to get this chance,” Gilmour told the BBC after. “Today I stepped up and took my opportunity. Great game, great victory.”

“I need to keep pushing on, keep doing what I’m doing.”

Fabinho, Adam Lallana and Curtis Jones fought against him in midfield but Gilmour not only held his own, he won the battle.

They witnessed up close his incredible passing range, ability to move around the pitch and his defensive abilities. The latter shouldn’t be underestimated despite his small frame, which rarely limits his ability to mix it physically.

Gilmour regained possession more than any of his team-mates on the night and his late intervention in the first half – tracking back to dispossess Sadio Mane in the box – was vital, with Willian having earlier given the Blues the lead.

His performance in midfield was all the more important as Mateo Kovacic came off with a foot injury late in the first half after a collision with Mane.

The Croatia international has been Chelsea’s player of the season so far, and his loss would be hard felt at any time. Particularly now, as Lampard will sweat over his fitness having lost N’Golo Kante to injury along with Jorginho to suspension for three games in his midfield.

That injury saw Gilmour shift to the left of the midfield three from the middle and he handled the in-game change with ease.

Chelsea won their midfield battle and were worth their win on the night. Barkley’s display was almost as timely as Gilmour’s, with the pair now set to start all of their side’s next few games as injuries continue to pile up.

“Today he was brilliant, but it’s not a surprise to me [given] the way he trains every day,” Barkley told the BBC. “I saw him last season and he was quality in training. He showed that with the little chances he had this season, and today it was a top performance. Long may it continue.”

A left-footed, cross-field ball towards Pedro earned Barkley early applause and it only served to encourage the ex-Everton man. It was an important performance, with his manager having criticised him for being caught in two off-field incidents that were sold to major English newspapers.

He has also been inconsistent on the field, his showing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week seeing him complete only one pass in the opening 30 minutes.

Perhaps partly fuelled by the Merseyside rivalry through his Everton connection, he looked the player that everyone expected he would be when he broke through at Goodison Park. His goal, after a powerful run through midfield, capped off a fine display.

After that heavy defeat at home to the German champions, the FA Cup is likely Chelsea’s only chance of silverware this season and they weren’t favourites going into this match either.

Lampard’s season could still end with some glory and his squad are responding well to a deepening injury crisis. He now needs more of the same for the next three games against Everton, Aston Villa and Bayern.
