Davide Zappacosta close to joining Roma on loan from Chelsea

Davide Zappacosta is close to joining Roma on a season-long loan from Chelsea, according to Sky in Italy.

Davide Zappacosta is set to join Roma on loan from Chelsea

The right-back has not featured for Chelsea this season under new head coach Frank Lampard and is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Zappacosta will undergo a medical later this week ahead of completing a move to the Stadio Olimpico.

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Torino in 2017 under the management of Antonio Conte and went on to feature 35 times during his debut season in England.

Zappacosta has won the FA Cup and Europa League during his time with Chelsea

He was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in May 2018, but was an unused substitute during the 1-0 final victory over Manchester United at Wembley.

Zappacosta made only four Premier League appearances last season under Maurizio Sarri, with the majority of his performances coming in Chelsea’s successful run to the Europa League title.

Does this leave Chelsea short at right-back?

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta remains Chelsea’s first-choice right-back, despite a shaky start to the new season in the 4-0 defeat away at Manchester United.

Lampard is keen to give youth a chance this campaign given the club’s transfer ban and has already handed starts to Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham.

Reece James impressed on loan at Wigan last season and there are high hopes he can become the long-term successor to Azpilicueta.

Pogba suffers racist abuse on social media after Man Utd penalty miss

The France international midfielder saw a spot-kick saved in a Premier League clash with Wolves and was subjected to vile comments after the game.

Getty

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has, after his penalty miss in a Premier League clash with Wolves, become the latest player to be subjected to racist abuse online.

The France international spurned the opportunity to earn the Red Devils all three points during a trip to Molineux.

He was given the chance to fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in front from the spot on Monday, but saw an effort from 12 yards saved by Rui Patricio.

The game in the West Midlands ended 1-1, with Ruben Neves cancelling out Anthony Martial’s opener.

Pogba stepping up for penalty duty was questioned by plenty on the night, but some criticism on social media took the argument too far.

In what is becoming an alarmingly common occurrence, the World Cup winner found himself the target of vile comments from trolls.

He is the third player in the space of a week to have faced such insults.

On Sunday, Reading striker Yakou Meite called out his abusers after seeing a penalty saved in an outing for the Championship side against Cardiff.

He had stepped off the bench for the Royals before missing a 91st-minute effort.

Prior to that, Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham also suffered racist abuse after failing from the spot.

The England international missed the decisive penalty in the Blues’ UEFA Super Cup meeting with domestic rivals Liverpool.

Frank Lampard condemned the abuse his frontman faced, with the Chelsea manager left “disgusted” by the actions of some so-called fans.

The Blues also spoke out as a collective in a statement which slammed the “abhorrent posts”.

Lampard has called for social media companies such as Twitter to do more when it comes to policing the comments that appear on their platforms.

Many of those which appeared on Monday in relation to Pogba have since been deleted, while a number of accounts have been taken down.

United have spoken out on the incidents, though, saying in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse aimed at Paul Pogba last night and we utterly condemn it.

“The individuals who expressed these views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the vast majority of our fans condemn this on social media also.

“Manchester United has zero tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our #AllRedAllEqual initiative.

“We will work to identify the few involved in these incidents and take the strongest course of action available to us. We also encourage social media companies to take action in these cases.”

Twitter’s terms and conditions claim that action will be taken “against behaviour that targets individuals with hateful conduct”.

The general consensus is, however, that much more needs to be done in an effort to rid football and wider society of racism and other forms of prejudice.

Anti-racism charity Kick It Out revealed in a report made public in July that reports of racist abuse increased during the 2018-19 campaign by 43 per cent from 192 cases to 274.

Brilliant Dani Alves lights up Sao Paulo as debut strike shows Europe’s elite what they’re missing

Reinvented in his native Brazil as a playmaker, the former Barca and Juventus star still has talent to spare as he marked his debut with a goal.

A brave new era at the Estadio Morumbi began on Sunday. Two blockbuster signings were cleared to take the pitch for Sao Paulo in their Brasileirao showdown with Ceara, a duo that between them boast some of football’s biggest prizes.

On the right-hand side of defence lined up the grizzled figure of Juanfran, the Atletico Madrid legend who has opted to spend his final playing years thousands of kilometres away from the Spanish capital. On any other day the 34-year-old would have been the biggest attraction as he made his Tricolor bow.

Against Ceara, however, all eyes were on another man. Dani Alves, fresh from inspiring Brazil to Copa America glory, took the pitch wearing Sao Paulo’s No. 10 shirt, fulfilling a long-held dream of his to represent the club at a time when some of Europe’s biggest sides were still chasing his signature. That love is mutual: 40,000 fans turned out at his official presentation, and the Morumbi was packed on Sunday to welcome him back officially to Brazil’s top flight 17 years after leaving Bahia for Sevilla.

But this is indeed a new beginning. Alves lined up in the middle of midfield in the host’s starting formation, far from his post on the right side of defence where he made his name. Following in the footsteps of Rai, Kaka and other Sao Paulo legends, he is the Tricolor’s No. 10 in every possible sense.

That is not to say that at 36, the former BarcelonaJuventus and PSG star is looking to close out his career in a flurry of Harlem Globetrotters-esque tricks and exuberant showboating. Sunday’s first half saw him play primarily with his back to goal and with one or two touches, always looking to bring his team-mates into the game in the face of aggressive Ceara pressing.

It was nevertheless far from a stroll for the star. After testing Ceara’s Diogo Silva in the first minute with an effort from outside the area Alves toiled under the close attention of the visitors’ markers, struggling to make much of an impact in a crowded midfield. On more than one occasion he was guilty of dawdling on the ball and losing possession in an opening 40 minutes that offered few thrills. All he needed, though, was one opportunity.

Just as Ceara were looking forward to entering the break on level terms, Alves turned up in the area to break the deadlock. His goal owed much to Juanfran, who steamed down the right flank and crossed low into the danger zone; Ceara failed to clear their lines and Alves had no problem in bursting through after taking Raniel’s short pass and finishing with class.

The goal sent a previously dormant Morumbi into raptures as almost every member of the Sao Paulo side shared in the celebrations. His last act of the first half saw him send a free-kick into the side netting before the referee’s whistle sounded, and he marched off down the tunnel with an ovation from the home stands ringing in his ears. His dream move was enjoying a dream start.

Ceara were the team that pushed hardest after the break, and probably should have had a penalty when the spritely Felippe Cardoso was poleaxed by Sao Paulo goalkeeper Thiago Volpi with the net gaping. But Alves remained a danger, and almost added an assist to his goal in repaying the favour for Raniel before play was brought back for a marginal offside. With no further movement on the scoresheet Sao Paulo settled for a 1-0 win, far from a vintage performance but a more than satisfactory end to this historic day for the Paulista giants.

Bigger challenges than Ceara will follow. Qualification for next year’s Copa Libertadores is the overriding goal for Sao Paulo this season, giving Alves the chance to add a win in South America’s biggest club competition to his three Champions League triumphs and thus enter an exclusive club of stars who have succeeded in both, a group that includes Ronaldinho, Carlos Tevez and Kaka.

A top-six finish in this year’s Serie A would assure a place in the Copa, though there is no reason why the Tricolor, now five points back from leaders Santos with a game in hand and with four wins in their last four outings, cannot challenge for the title with less than half of the current campaign played to date. It is clear that the arrivals of Juanfran and especially Alves can only help in that quest.

On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, meanwhile, more than a few teams may be looking at events in the Morumbi with no little regret. Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham were linked with Alves’ services this summer, while reports in Spain claimed he contacted Barcelona over a possible return only to see the Catalans turn down the opportunity.

What is clear from Sunday is that, even at 36, in his first competitive match since the Copa America and with precious little time to prepare with his new team-mates, the right-back-turned-playmaker remains a priceless talent. His departure from Europe’s elite is a loss for his most recent suitors but without a shadow of a doubt a coup for Sao Paulo – and Brazilian football as a whole.

Round 21 of V-League – Saigon FC celebrate victory, HCMC FC nourish the hope to win the title

Saigon FC were in danger before this round as the team at the ranking’s bottom Khánh Hòa were close to them with 3 points less. Playing at Hàng Đẫy stadium, Saigon FC were surely evaluated to be inferior to hosts Viettel. Meanwhile, HCMC FC had an important win to catch up with Hanoi FC.

Both Viettel and Saigon FC played slowly in the first minutes of the match. Until the 8th minute, the guesses suddenly opened up the score by a goal of Vũ Tín after a poor handling of goalkeeper Quàng Thế Tài.

The rests of the first half were boring as both teams could not create clear opportunities, and they end the first 45 minutes by a 1-0 win for the guesses Saigon FC. One more noticeable thing was that Viettel’s Trọng Hoàng got a sudden injury and had to leave the pitch in the first half.

Tempo of the match was not heightened after the second half began. Viettel was superior but they did not have so many clear chances. The most significant opportunity happened at the 67th minute Quế Ngọc Hải had a very nice high pass to Vũ Minh Tuấn, but it was a pity that his shoot could not defeat Saigon FC’s goalkeeper.

Saigon FC had a soon goal, thus, they played low to protect the score. And their efforts finally brought them success as after 90 minutes, Saigon FC had a precious minimum win 1-0 over hosts Viettel.

With this loss, Viettel have 27 points and temporarily rank 9th. Being close to the army club are Saigon FC. After 21 rounds, the players of Mr.Nguyễn Thành Công have 26 points and rise to the 10th ranking.

The last game of round 21 between HCMC and Than Quảng Ninh witnessed a rain of goals. The owners of Thống Nhất stadium had a 3-1 win by goals of Mansaray (2) and Vũ Quang Nam. Guesses Than Quảng Ninh’s goal was made by Nguyễn Xuân Hùng.

With this result, HCMC now have 38 points and continue to nourish the hope to catch up with the ranking leader Hanoi FC. To Than Quảng Ninh, with 31 points, the team of the land of mines consolidate their 3rd position, 2 points higher than the 4th standing Bình Dương.

Philippe Coutinho: Barcelona midfielder set for Bayern Munich loan move

Bayern Munich have agreed to sign attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

Philippe Coutinho has made 55 appearances for Brazil

The German champions said the 27-year-old Brazilian is expected to complete the move in the coming days.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “The name doesn’t matter, only the quality.”

The club are also set to sign 19-year-old midfielder Mickael Cuisance from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Coutinho, who was in the crowd for Barcelona’s La Liga defeat against Athletic Bilbao on Friday, joined from Liverpool in a £142m deal in January 2018.

Despite scoring 21 goals in 76 appearances for the Spanish giants, he has fallen short of expectations and had been linked with several clubs this summer.

It is believed he was included as part of a bid by Barcelona to re-sign Neymar from Paris St-Germain, the Spanish club reportedly willing to offer 100m euros (£92.4m) plus Coutinho for the forward.

Tottenham ended their interest in a loan deal for Coutinho earlier this month, while he was also linked with moves to Arsenal and back to Liverpool.

Neymar! Neymar! Neymar! Brazil star on Barca minds after disaster in Bilbao

The Catalain side crumbled in their first league match of the season, offering evidence that they may just need the Paris Saint-Germain star.

“Neymar! Neymar! Neymar!,” chanted gathered Barcelona fans at president Josep Maria Bartomeu as he arrived with the team to a Bilbao hotel before their opening La Liga clash on Friday.

And the Brazilian striker’s name was on the Catalan club’s mind at the end of the night too, after a painful 1-0 defeat by Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames, as Luis Suarez went off injured.

Evergreen 38-year-old Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz scored a sensational scissor-kick winner in the final stages, showing the cutting edge Barcelona lacked with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.

Barcelona desperately missed captain Lionel Messi and struggled to break down the impressive Basque side in a tight clash, despite summer signing Antoine Griezmann making his debut for the visitors.

The French forward showed the willingness to work defensively that made him such a favourite of Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, although he spent too much time in those areas for Barcelona’s liking.

Athletic were better for most of the game and Marc-Andre ter Stegen made some smart stops from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia, although Barcelona twice hit the woodwork.

Suarez struck the post after Unai Lopez’s haphazard pass-back found the Uruguayan alone in the Athletic area, but he was already limping by that point with a calf injury and was soon replaced by Rafinha.

The Brazilian, who may well leave Barcelona before the transfer window shuts, crashed an effort against the crossbar via the hand of Unai Simon.

Rafinha showed nice skill, invention and good link play after the break and, if Barcelona could guarantee that he will remain injury-free, would be a fine option to have in reserve for the attack.

Unfortunately, history has shown the Brazilian is eminently breakable and the Catalans cannot rely on him to stay fit.

Instead, they continue to push for his compatriot to return to Camp Nou, while pushing another out the door.

Barcelona director Guillermo Amor said before the game that the club had reached the basis of a deal with Bayern Munich for Philippe Coutinho to leave on loan, ending a painful year-and-a-half spell for the former Liverpool player in Spain.

Coutinho’s departure will clear a big chunk from the wage bill, creating space for Neymar’s potential return two years after leaving for PSG for a world-record fee.

It is important for Barcelona not to overreact. This loss is just the first match of 38 and, of course, the team is not fully up to speed yet, especially not without talisman and star player Messi.

After all, the last time Barcelona lost the first game of the season was under Pep Guardiola in 2008, a 1-0 defeat by Numancia at the start of a campaign that saw them win an historic treble.

And yet, when Carles Perez came on for Sergi Roberto for the final 15 minutes, it did exemplify why Barcelona are battling to bring Neymar ‘home’.

It was impossible not to recall the Brazilian and his box of tricks in his first era at Barcelona while watching Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele struggle to beat Athletic defenders.

Some fans have been confused by the club’s determination to re-sign Neymar, but this performance may start to change minds.

Messi out of Barcelona’s La Liga opener with injury

The captain missed Barca’s US tour and the two friendlies against Napoli last week as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.

Lionel Messi will miss Barcelona‘s La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao on Friday after head coach Ernesto Valverde declared he would not take any risks with the star attacker.

The Argentine trained separately from his team-mates on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a calf injury suffered in training last week.

Messi’s participation in the Copa America meant he wasn’t cited to return to training until early August, but his pre-season preparations were quickly scuppered.

The captain missed Barca’s US tour and the two friendlies against Napoli last week, and the club have confirmed he is not in the squad for their match Friday against Valverde’s old club.

At an earlier news conference, Valverde declared he is not prepared to take any chances with his talisman as the team begin their defence of the La Liga title they won in May.

Valverde said they would wait until training to decide, but declared it unlikely at the time that Messi would be available.

“We won’t take any risk with any player, much less if he is Messi,” said Barca head coach. “We will see how he arrives to the training session but he hasn’t worked or played with the team.

“Doing an individual recovery is not the same as playing a game, his recovery process is good but we must wait until the training session.”

Valverde’s Barca open the season having captured back-to-back La Liga crowns since the coach took over after departing Athletic two years ago.

However, Champions League failures in both seasons, during which Barca surrendered three-goal first leg advantages to Roma and Liverpool respectively, has seen Valverde come in for criticism.

Responding to questions over his style of play, Valverde pointed to his overall results and domestic silverware to show Barca are doing more right than wrong under his leadership.

“Everybody has this target, we want the best we can,” Valverde said. “In the big games you want to raise your level but you’re always thinking about playing better.

“The question is how. Do you want me to look like George Clooney? That’s difficult. The most beautiful football is difficult too, but we try to be the best team with the best football and we are steadily improving.

“We had some excellent games last season, some not so good, but if I look back over my two years we’ve lost four league games, I think, mostly when we’ve already won the title, so I think we’re doing a lot of things right.”

‘Super club’ approach for Sancho knocked back by Dortmund

Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of the Bundesliga giants, has admitted to rebuffing efforts from a European heavyweight to land the England international.

Borussia Dortmund knocked back the advances of one of Europe’s “super clubs” when questions were asked of Jadon Sancho, claims club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

The 19-year-old winger continued his meteoric rise during the 2018-19 campaign.

Senior international recognition came his way with England, while helping Dortmund to challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.

His efforts did not go unnoticed, with it suggested that the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid were monitoring the exciting former Manchester Citywinger.

Watzke has now revealed that questions were asked of the teenager’s future, telling Ruhr Nachrichten: “A chief of one of the super clubs asked me back in spring if there was a chance [to sign Sancho] but I told him straight away he should forget about it and he never contacted me again.

“He knew I meant what I said.”

Dortmund have stated at regular intervals that they have no intention of parting with Sancho any time soon.

They have him tied to a long-term contract and intend to be the ones of benefit from his immediate development.

There is an acceptance that keeping Sancho from the clutches of the biggest-spending sides in world football will be almost impossible in the long run, but for now he remains a vital part of Dortmund’s plans.

Watzke added: “There aren’t many 19-year-olds with such a potential.

“He is also not a player from the region or one who would have any connection to it.

“When you have a player like Jadon Sancho, you must reassess the situation every single year. Everything else would not be honest.

“If a foreign player is not convinced that the club is right for him at the exact time, it just does not make any sense.”

Sancho was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Year in 2018-19, as he recorded 12 goals and 17 assists in the German top-flight.

He has already been back among the goals in this season’s DFL-Supercup and will be hoping to help Dortmund end their wait for title glory in the current campaign.

Those efforts are due to start on Saturday when Lucien Favre’s side open their season with a home date against Augsburg.
