Former Rangers midfielder Gattuso vows to ‘kill himself in front of everyone’ if he’s found guilty of match-fixing by Italian prosecutors

Former Rangers star Rino Gattuso put his life on the line against accusations of match fixing by declaring that he would kill himself in the street if found guilty.

Italian prosecutors named the World Cup-winning midfielder as part of a wide-ranging investigation on Tuesday, providing evidence that the ex-AC Milan star had been contacted by a go-between working on behalf of a match-rigging gang.
But the combative Gattuso came out fighting, declaring: ‘I am prepared to go into the town square and kill myself in front of everyone if I should be found guilty of such a crime.

‘After all, my life would be meaningless from that point on. I would not have the courage to look anyone in the eye. I say that from the heart.
‘In my life, I have never sat down with anyone to fix games, nor have I ever thought to, as I wouldn’t even know where to start.
‘I don’t even play five-a-side football with my friends because I can’t stand losing. This matter is absurd and unbelievable. I don’t know what they want from me. I don’t know what match-fixing is.
‘I am angry and offended. I do not want to have this stain on my career and my character.’

The two-time Champions League winner, who held talks with Rangers boss Ally McCoist and then-chief executive Charles Green about a spectacular return to Ibrox in the summer of 2012, was named in a prosecutor’s report released to the Italian media yesterday.
His home was raided as part of a widespread swoop by Operation Last Bet, including the arrest of four men — among them Francesco Bazzani. The report issued yesterday shows 13 texts from Bazzani to Gattuso, as well as a number to former Lazio player Cristian Brocchi.
Prosecutor Roberto di Martino said: ‘Gattuso and Brocchi were connected to the case by the use of phone taps. We’ve made four arrests and 16 searches. Some of these searches have produced a positive outcome. We found notes and notebooks whose contents were based on betting.’

But Gattuso hit back, declaring: ‘The phone records show Bazzani sent me 13 text messages. They will, therefore, also show I never replied to any of them.
This man knows half of Serie A, he came to the Milanello gates like many hundreds of others.
He was a bookmaker in Bologna, but I never talked about fixing games.

‘Match-fixing is just not part of who I am. I made some bets when it was still allowed, but as soon as it was barred for professionals, I stopped. No problem.
‘I am accused not of placing bets, but of fixing games, and I can’t understand how they can do that.
‘I was in Naples, so only found out about the raid from my wife, after police took me in to sign some papers. I hope the magistrate calls me in soon because I want to clarify my position.
‘I had also been dragged into this affair two years ago. I am convinced and fully aware of my innocence. I spent my entire career working hard. I have a foundation that allowed me to give away £1.25million to help children and then people suggest I fixed games to earn more? It just doesn’t make sense.’

Gattuso’s home was raided on Tuesday on the strength of phone calls and text messages that, according to the report of the investigating judge, cast some suspicion on the Italian international.
Excerpts from the report make special mention of calls and messages — the content of which remains unknown — between Gattuso and Bazzani, referred to as ‘Mr Y’ in an investigation that has so far seen widespread arrests in Italy, Singapore and South America.
The report, which focuses heavily on Milan’s title-winning season of 2010-11, reads: ‘There were contacts on the occasion of the match between Chievo and Milan on February 20, 2011.
‘These indicate a further element of particular importance, indicative of relations with the professional football world — contacts with the player of AC Milan, Gennaro Ivan Gattuso …
‘The analysis of telephone contacts of Bazzani, at the mentioned match, has revealed the singular coincidence of a contact (SMS outbound) with a user name to AC Millan footballer Gattuso.’

Cremona-based di Martino, who has worked alongside fellow prosecutors from Bari and Naples, said the latest arrests show that little has moved on since the ‘Calciopoli’ match-rigging scandal of 2006 which resulted in the demotion of champions Juventus to Serie B.
‘I’m not a commentator and I’m not here to pontificate,’ he said.
‘But we are faced with some clear facts that, despite the arrests and investigation, most of these people continue to do what they did before (Calciopoli).
‘There are 30 matches in Serie A in which there are contacts between Bazzani and the players or managers who are linked to the team playing the next day or two days later.
‘There clearly hasn’t been much reaction to what happened before, because things are carrying on just as usual for these people.’

The Vietnamese team after the game

U-23 Viet Nam has tried hard, however goal com too late. U-23 Viet Nam has controlled the game in 45 minutes of first half. Van Quyet, Van Thang, Manh Dung, Ha Minh Tuan and defenders Dinh Hoang, Manh Hung, Quang Hung, goal keeper Buu Ngoc played their best for the national pride.

However, it’s a thousand pities that Vietnamese players failed to realize chances into goals. Though we played well and created many attacks toward opponents, a number of shoots were missed by Van Thang or Ha Minh Tuan… It’s reasonable when we received losing.

U-23 Vietnam should take experience from Malaysia’s playing style counter attack. Our opponents can’t be asserted by 1-1 draw with U-23 Singapore. They accepted to leave the middle for U-23 Viet nam then locking all arrows to the goal.

Moreover, In the last 10 minutes of game, Malaysian players have knocked out Viet nam with 2 consecutive goals in 81st minute, and 90th minute. Hong Quan’s goal in 90+4th minute was just a pride goal for Viet Nam to back home.

Moyes: Modern-day clubs too hasty to sack managers

Following Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal at Tottenham, the Manchester United manager – who has struggled since his summer appointment – feels stability is key to a successful side.

Manchester United boss David Moyes is counting his blessings he has not been a victim of football’s sacking culture so far in his career.

Andre Villas-Boas, who was also sacked by Chelsea in 2012, became the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season when Tottenham showed him the door on Monday following 17 months in charge.

Moyes spent four years at Preston North End then joined Everton in 2002, spending 11 years at Goodison Park before succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford – and the Scot feels clubs are to hasty in modern-day football.

“It makes me realise how lucky I have been at the clubs I have been at,” Moyes told reporters.

“I worked for great people at Preston, great people at Everton and my short experience at Manchester United tells me I am working for really good people here.

“Maybe some of the other managers haven’t been as fortunate as I have.”

Moyes’ position has been called into question during a disappointing start to his United career, but he points to his predecessor, Sir Alex, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger as examples to prove loyalty can pay off.

“I am a great advocate of managers, I want managers to be given opportunities,” he added. “I am involved with the LMA [League Managers’ Association]. We are saying the best clubs have had stability.

“Look at Arsene Wenger, the stability he has given Arsenal. Sir Alex at United and even what happened to myself at Everton.

“Obviously the owners and chairman have their own reasons but the clubs who have given the managers that period of time have benefited.

“It is getting less and less to see that in football. The more we see it, it might help clubs gain a bit more control and stability. In turn it might mean they are not hiring and firing managers quite so often.”

Cantona: I don’t envy Deschamps

The Frenchman revealed that he would be unlikely to consider coaching a national side, but could be tempted to return to football as an assistant coach

287755_heroa

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona says he does not envy France coach Didier Deschamps’ job of attempting to bring together a group of players capable of winning the World Cup.

Deschamps has six months to prepare his side for the tournament in Brazil, having qualified via a play-off at the expense of Ukraine in November, and has been pitted alongside Ecuador, Honduras and Switzerland in Group E.

However, Cantona, who has turned his hand to acting since retiring in 1997 from the game, believes the job is made all the more difficult, given the little time coaches have together with their players.

“Leading a national team? No thank you,” Cantona is quoted as saying by Le Figaro.

“It is difficult to lead players who are together just one week every two months and do not play with each other the rest of the time.

“This is the strength of the team of Spain: it has eight Barcelona players who train together all year.”

However, the former France international did not rule out the possibility of coaching in the future, he said: “If I had to recommit myself to football, I would rather it be at a club where I could lead the team on a daily basis.

“Perhaps I’d consider committing myself to Saint-Etienne or Lens, the only clubs in France that resemble the English clubs.”

Tevez resigned to World Cup snub with Argentina

The Juventus striker feels his goals are not enough to convince national coach Alejandro Sabella to take him to next year’s tournament in Brazil

351195_heroa (1)

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has given up hope of going to the World Cup with Argentina despite his impressive club form.

The 29-year-old, who has yet to feature for the Albiceleste under national coach Alejandro Sabella, has 11 goals in all competitions for Serie A champions Juventus, including a hat-trick in their 4-0 win over Sassuolo on Sunday.

Despite being the league’s second-highest goalscorer behind Fiorentina’s Giuseppe Rossi, Tevez does not expect to make a return to international football, where his last and 62nd appearance for his country came against Uruguay in the Copa America quarter-finals, while Sergio Batista was still in charge in 2011.

“I don’t think my goals can convince Sabella to take me to the World Cup,” he told Tuttosport.

Tevez is determined to help Juventus secure a third straight title and win the top goalscorer award in his first season in Italy.

“I want to win the Scudetto with Juve, so I would also like to win the Capocannoniere crown,” he added.

“I look to just do my best – sometimes I am able to do that, others I am not.

“The season is not over and we’ll look to win every trophy available to us.”

Wilshere charged by FA over offensive gesture in Manchester City clash

The midfielder faces a possible ban after appearing to raise his middle finger to the home support during Arsenal’s 6-3 defeat, with the incident caught on video.

351744_heroa

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been charged by the Football Association for making an offensive gesture in the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City.

The incident was not seen by match officials at the time, though video evidence has led to a potential retrospective ban and has been deemed a “sending-off offence”.

Wilshere has until 18.00GMT on December 18 to respond to the charge before facing a possible ban, which will include the Emirates Stadium clash with title rivals Chelsea on December 23.

A statement on the FA’s official website reads: “Wilshere has been charged retrospectively by The FA under a new pilot project for potential ‘not seen’ incidents in Premier League matches.

“Under the new process, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel will be asked by The FA to review it and advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.

“For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence. In this instance, the panel were unanimous.”

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez received a one-match ban in December 2011 following an offensive gesture he made to Fulham fans during a Premier League match at Craven Cottage.
