The Vietnam Football Federation has offered to co-host the 2016 ASEAN Football Federation Cup with Myanmar, after the Philippines withdrew from hosting the biennial event.
A VFF source told Thanh Nien that they have submitted an application to the AFF to host the event, scheduled from November 19 to December 17 this year.
On February 24 the AFF announced that the Philippines Football Federation (PFF) had to withdraw due to contractual problems.
“The AFF would like to clarify that despite the PFF’s best efforts, the PFF were unable to deliver the contract with the stadium which was to host the prestigious tournament. The PFF were given two extensions to try and negotiate with the stadium to secure the contract.
“Without the contract, the PFF had no option but to withdraw as hosts. The contract between the host Football Association and the stadium is one of the main criteria that is stipulated in the Hosting Obligations.”
A decision on a replacement will be made by the AFF Council at its next meeting on March 12 in Da Nang, Vietnam.
Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam have all expressed interest, FourFourTwo football newspaper reported.
Vietnam co-hosted the last edition of the AFF Cup with Singapore when they lost to Malaysia in the semifinal.
Thailand won the Cup beating Malaysia 4-3 in a two-legged final
