Serie A is set to become the latest league to use goal-line technology after announcing plans to implement it in games from the start of the 2015/16 season.

England’s Premier League adopted the modern approach at the start of the current campaign by introducing high speed cameras to monitor the ball as it crosses the line.

Italian football has witnessed several controversial incidents this season, including Davide Astori’s winner for Roma in their clash against Udinese recently.

But such events will now become a thing of the past after FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio unveiled plans on Thursday.

He said: “This morning’s meeting began a journey that will take us to the application of goal line technology in our country during the predicted time-frame. I am convinced that its use, starting from next season, will be unavoidable.”

There have also been calls in Italy to begin using video replays to help referees, but at present there are no plans in place to add further advancements beyond goal-line technology.
