- There’s no evidence of match-fixing in Vietnam’s top league: football chairman17:03 | 25/09/2015
No evidence has ever been found to confirm any match-rigging in the 2015 season of the top-flight V-League 1, according to Le Hung Dung, chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
Dung sat down for an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper after the top league of the nation ended on September 20 amid rumors and allegations from spectators that many games in the last rounds were fixed.
“In football, a stronger team does not always win over a weaker side,” Dung said.
“In Vietnam, if a stronger team loses to a weaker squad, rumors and allegations will automatically arise and spectators will attribute it to ‘match-rigging’ or clubs ‘donating points’ to each other to maintain ‘underground’ relations.”
Last season, police found sufficient evidence to prove several players of Dong Nai had manipulated the result of their game with Quang Ninh and the players later admitted to the manipulation, the VFF chairman said.
“This season, police officers kept a close watch on the V-League 1 games and have confirmed that nothing unusual had happened,” he added.
Asked about the disagreement between Dung and his deputy Doan Nguyen Duc in recruiting Toshiya Miura as the head coach of the Vietnamese men’s national football team, the VFF boss said there is nothing out of the ordinary when two people have differing points of view.
But VFF officials will attend a meeting to discuss ways to do everything better for the development of Vietnamese football, he promised.
