• Vietnam 1 Arsenal 7: Giroud scores first half hat-trick as Gunners reach seventh heaven in Hanoi
    13:58 | 18/07/2013

In the grand scheme of things, thrashing a Vietnam XI probably doesn’t mean much.
But Arsene Wenger left the My Dinh Stadium here in Hanoi today with the answers to a few questions.

Firstly, if he fails to sign the world class striker he so desperately wants before the opening day clash against Aston Villa, then Olivier Giroud will be a more than adequate deputy – as he took his pre-season tally to five in two matches with a stunning hat-trick.

Secondly, he can rely on Bacary Sagna to play as an emergency centre-back should he fail in his attempts to land Swansea’s Ashley Williams to ease his defensive problems after the right-back put in a promising performance in the heart of Arsenal’s back-four.

And thirdly, probably most important of all, Jack Wilshere is almost certain to be fit for the start of the season as he played his first football since undergoing minor ankle surgery in May.

In addition to Giroud’s three goals, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chuba Akpom (2) and Ignasi Miquel all got on the scoresheet as the Gunners followed up the 7-0 win over an Indonesian Dream Team with a 7-1 victory.
Interestingly, Sagna started as a makeshift central defender alongside Laurent Koscielny.
And Giroud aside, the France international was arguably Arsenal’s best player on the night, making some crucially interventions in an accomplished display.
Giroud hit his first five minutes in, hammering home Tomas Rosicky’s pass.

Arsenal should have increased their lead soon after – Lukas Podolski twice missing good chances and Serge Gnabry also going close before Giroud notched his third of the tour with a beautiful left-footed effort after some clumsy Vietnamese defending.
And the Frenchman completed his hat-trick on the stroke of half-time with a neat finish after Rosicky’s pass.
Wenger made eight substitutions at half-time, Theo Walcott, Per Mertesacker and Aaron Ramsey among those coming on.

But the replacements did not affect Arsenal’s flow as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored Arsenal’s fourth with a brilliant clipped effort from 20-yards.
Teenager Chuba Akpom scored a quickfire brace to take his tally to three in two games since their arrival in Asia before Ignasi Miquel scored their seventh.
Wilshere was introduced in place of Chamberlain with 25 minutes left on the clock and the midfielder showed no ill effects of May’s operation despite the fact he was heavily breathing not long after coming on.
The England midfielder now looks on course to be fit for the clash against Villa next month.
Tran Manh Dung sent the home crowd into rapturous with a late consolation before a torrential downpour meant the game ended in farcical conditions as the Gunners left for Japan with another victory under their belts.
