- Vietnam cruise to third win at 2016 AFC U-19 qualifiers10:41 | 05/10/2015
Vietnam came one step closer to securing a place in the 2016 AFC U-19 Championships finals after narrowly defeating Timor Leste with a score of 2-1 in their third Group G qualifying match at Thuwunna Stadium in Myanmar’s capital city of Yangon on October 4.
Vietnam exerted offensive pressure on Timor right from the first whistle seeking to bag full three points to consolidate their group domination.
Their overwhelming attacks proved effective with an early opener scored by Duc Chinh from the penalty area after only four minutes of play. Lam Thuan was fouled by a Timor defender in the box earning Vietnam a penalty and Chinh made no mistake with an accurate converter.
Inspired by the lead, Vietnam maintained their prevalence constantly keeping the ball on the Timor defensive field.
Following a number of opportunities missed, Vietnam finally secured a second goal thanks to Minh Di’s long-range strike in the 17th minute.
After the break, Vietnam continued to dominate ball possession with Minh Di, Duc Chinh and Trong Hoa driving consecutive shots towards Timor’s goal, which, however, were not cunning enough to be converted into goals.
The wastefulness of opportunities forced Vietnam almost to pay sharply as Timor Leste scored their solitary goal of the match in the last official minute of play thanks to a header from Agostino.
The 2-1 victory helped Vietnam to build on their top position of Group G with nine points after three matches.
Later the same day, Myanmar beat Hong Kong 2-0 climbing to second place with seven points.
Vietnam only need a draw to secure an official place in next year’s AFC U-19 Championships finals as they meet Myanmar in their last group match tomorrow.
