Vietnam’s Spanish coach Bruno Jose Garcia Formoso devised a strong defense with swift attacks when facing the more active Thai players at the Uzbekistan National Stadium.
Goalkeepers Y Hoa and his substitute Van Huy both played well to block Thailand’s attacks and a penalty by Jetsada in the first half.
Thailand scored the first goal in the 31st minute with a strong shot by Suphawut that defeated Van Huy.
Vietnam rushed to attack and Xuan Du leveled the score eight minutes later.
But Vietnam lost in the last minute when Suphawut scored two goals in just a short span of time to complete his hat trick.
Losing the top place in Group C, Vietnam will play against Japan while Thailand will face Australia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday (February 17).
In the two other quarterfinals on the same day, host Uzbekistan will face Iraq and Iran will play Kyrgyzstan.
