As the proposal on delaying the game against Hougang United in Singapore was not approved, Công Phượng’s club may quit AFC Cup due to Covid-19 worries?

Due to worries about the recent acute respiratory infection caused by coronavirus happening complicatedly, HCMC FC has given a proposal to postpone the match against Hougang United in Singapore. VFF’s General Secretary Lê Hoài Anh revealed that ‘VFF has submitted a proposal of HCMC FC to postpone the game in Singapore to AFC. We understand the feeling of HCMC FC members and hope the representatives of Vietnam to play in AFC Cup with health and mental safety. As the two representing clubs of Vietnam have proposed to postpone matches at their home stadium, the games in areas with the presence of Covid-19 like Singapore should be considered to delay’.

Proposal not approved, Công Phượng’s club may quit AFC Cup due to Covid-19

Until 09h30 of February 19th, 81 case infected with Covid-19 had been reported in Singapore. The lion national island possesses the second highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world, just behind the outbreaking nation of Covid which is still the core of the disease – China. Recently, at workshop of a multinational company taken place in a building in Singapore, some persons who had already had the disease infected two sanitation workers of the building.

However, according to a recent report, AFC decided not to postpone the game between Hougang United and HCMC FC. The match will take place in Singapore on February 25th although AFC accepted two representating clubs of Vietnam to swap their fixtures.

Specifically, the HCMC FC-Yangon United (Myanmar) first leg would take place on February 11th in Yangon (Myanmar) instead of Thống Nhất stadium as planned, while the second leg will take place on April 29th at Thống Nhất stadium.

Meanwhile, the Than Quảng Ninh-Ceres Negros (Philippines) first leg would happen on February 25th at Rizal Memorial (Philippines) instead of Cẩm Phả stadium as set up, and the second leg will be hosted on May 13th at Cẩm Phả stadium due to coronavirus worries either.

Not being allowed to postponed the games, the possibility that HCMC FC will quit AFC Cup 2020 appears. This is not unreasonable because human health always receives the highest priority, especially in the situation when coach Chung Hae Seong is facing with force troubles. 3 over 4 foreign players, being Amido Balde, Viktor Prodell, and Matias Jadue, are getting their own problems with difference levels. Only centerback Pape Diakite is healthy. Or captain Đỗ Văn Thuận cannot play at the moment, who luckily does not have to go under surgery but needs a few more months to recover.

If some more players are suspected of contacting with those infected with Covid-19 will be quarantined in 14 days, or be hospitalized for treatment of it is worse. If so, their force will get weaker. Despite of this, HCMC FC declared to determinedly compete for V-League and National Cup titles, or to achieve further targets in AFC Cup, ASEAN Club Championship without negatively influencing the image of Vietnam football. This is proved through the busy recruitment of the club. Recently, they have tried in the negotiation to have the service of Lee Nguyễn.
